It’s been months since we’ve heard anything about the next-gen Bentley Continental Flying Spur. We know the four-door variant of the Bentley Continental GT is coming sometime soon, but all we’ve seen so far is one batch of spy shots of a car that doesn’t stray too far from the current model. This new batch of photos shows another familiar car lapping the Nürburgring.

Although this car is still heavily camouflaged (with some stickers that make it look like the current car), we can make some good assumptions based on the Continental GT. The car will have a larger grille, a new headlight design and oval taillights that mirror the exhaust tips. Under the hood, we expect the turbocharged W12 to carry over. Look for V8 and plug-in hybrid variants to arrive sometime down the line.

We don’t know when the car will go on sale, but don’t expect to wait too much longer. It’s been eight months since the Continental GT was revealed, and this is really nothing more than a platform variant. Look for a full reveal sometime this summer.

The looming threat from supercorporations like Amazon is helping spur a new wave of megadeals (AVGO, QCOM, ROK, EMR) https://briefnews.eu/the-looming-threat-from-supercorporations-like-amazon-is-helping-spur-a-new-wave-of-megadeals-avgo-qcom-rok-emr/ https://briefnews.eu/the-looming-threat-from-supercorporations-like-amazon-is-helping-spur-a-new-wave-of-megadeals-avgo-qcom-rok-emr/#respond Sat, 18 Nov 2017 17:47:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-looming-threat-from-supercorporations-like-amazon-is-helping-spur-a-new-wave-of-megadeals-avgo-qcom-rok-emr/ Jeff BezosDrew Angerer / Getty Images

  • Mergers-and-acquisitions transactions worth over $ 10 billion are surging back after a largely dormant first half of the year.
  • Wall Street bankers say an improving global economy and confidence in the regulatory environment are playing a role.
  • The looming threat of supercorporations like Amazon has many large companies evaluating whether they can be an endgame winner — and whether they need to strike a deal to get there.

On Thursday, Emerson Electric upped its takeover bid for Rockwell Automation to $ 29 billion — 5% higher than the $ 27.6 billion bid Rockwell rejected last month.

Only days before, Qualcomm rebuffed the $ 130 billion overture by Broadcom in what would be the largest tech tie-up in history.

And rumors that the asset manager Brookfield Property Partners was eyeing up the shopping-mall investor GGP also came to fruition this week in the form of a $ 27.9 billion bid, one of the largest real-estate deals of all time.

Is the megadeal back?

The year started off in a frigid climate for large mergers and acquisitions. Only five M&A transactions valued at north of $ 10 billion were announced in the first half of the year, with a combined transaction value of $ 84 billion, according to data compiled by Thomson Reuters.

But boardrooms of the US’s largest companies have worked up an appetite for megadeals in the back half of 2017. Eight deals or attempted deals valued at more than $ 10 billion apiece — and a combined value of $ 245 billion — were announced from July through early November, already dwarfing the front half of the year with seven weeks to go.

While megadeals are still well off the firecracker pace from recent years, the rebound of late is a sign of increasing confidence in global economic conditions and a favorable regulatory environment. But it also highlights the rapidly dawning realization that technological disruption poses an existential threat even to industry giants.

The specter of a global supercorporation like Amazon, Google, or Walmart entering a new industry at a whim has previously fearsome conglomerates with market capitalizations in the tens of billions feeling rather small and acknowledging that maintaining the status quo is now a risky bet.

“If you’re not acting proactively, aggressively, to evolve your business and change your business, you’re likely falling behind — and that realization is happening at a greater pace,” Chris Ventresca, the global cohead of M&A at JPMorgan, told Business Insider. “Therefore, people are more willing to consider deals that they may not have considered in years past.”

The cool-off

Why did mega-deal making cool off so much at the beginning of the year?

Small M&A activity — deals worth less than $ 10 billion — remained strong, with $ 490 billion across 6,900 transactions, according to Thomson Reuters. That eclipsed small-deal volume in the first half of 2015 and 2016.

It was the large deals that lagged behind.

One explanation for the hesitancy was the nascent administration of President Donald Trump, who had made a habit after his election of tweet-shaming companies that made strategic moves likely to result in fewer jobs for Americans.

How would his regulators respond to large mergers that stood to benefit from synergies and cost cutting?

Such concerns began to ebb by summer. The president’s ability to smack stock prices with a single tweet quickly waned, and his social-media salvos shifted toward focusing on concerns such as the Russia investigation, the healthcare debate, and North Korea’s “Little Rocket Man.”

More important, big deals started to trickle through without arousing attention from the Department of Justice.

In April, the medical-devices company Becton Dickinson bought the surgical-supplies manufacturer C.R. Bard for $ 24.2 billion. In June, Amazon sent tremors through corporate boardrooms when it swooped in to buy Whole Foods for $ 13.6 billion. In July, Discovery Communications announced a $ 14.6 billion takeover of the fellow media company Scripps Networks Interactive.

The consolidations went uncontested, and more followed.

“Over the summer there was a number of big, strategic combinations, and they didn’t seem to meet with a lot of regulatory or political resistance,” Mark McMaster, the vice chairman of investment banking at Lazard, told Business Insider.

“It appears we’re in a regulatory environment where Washington is going to allow pure-play companies to continue to get larger,” he added.

The $ 85 billion merger between AT&T and Time Warner — announced in 2016 before Trump was elected — may be the exception, with regulators suggesting they’d file suit to block the deal. Reports have been mixed about whether the DOJ demanded the sale of Turner Broadcasting, the division that owns CNN.

By summer, CEOs also grew more confident that global economies were in sync and robust growth would continue.

With stock markets setting record highs and equity valuations soaring, this helped make the math on mergers more palatable.

Multiples may be elevated, but the premium is more justifiable with an upward-sloping global economy.

“Things that may have felt expensive suddenly feel less expensive when you model in an improving global economy,” said Ventresca of JPMorgan, noting that optimism on this front had improved from even six to nine months ago.

Deals also seem more palatable if a company can tap the low-interest debt markets or use its own inflated equity to finance a deal.

If companies swap shares in a deal, the fact that stock prices are inflated can be neutralized, McMaster noted.

The Amazon effect

Aside from giving investors and business leaders some confidence on the regulatory front, the Amazon takeover of Whole Foods more importantly served as a wake-up call.

Mark McMaster LazardLazard

Grocery stocks plummeted after the deal was announced, and pharmacy stocks took a hit as well.

Even companies with tens of billions of dollars in market capitalization began to confront the possibility that supercorporations like Amazon could wake up on a given day and upend their industry.

This forced firms to frankly assess their deficiencies and evaluate whether they had enough to be an endgame winner in their sector.

That’s why you’re seeing more megadeals that establish a firmer footing within an industry.

That may be why Disney — facing threats from Netflix and Amazon — isn’t certain it can win purely by growing within. The company was reportedly discussing a bid that could be in the neighborhood of $ 40 billion to acquire most of 21st Century Fox earlier this month, which would give the company a major leg up. And CVS Health’s reported $ 66 billion takeover plans for Aetna have everything to do with staying one step ahead of Amazon.

“Companies are feeling the pressure of creating endgame winners within their various sectors and are willing to take a longer-term view of whether they have the pieces of the puzzle to be that endgame winner,” Ventresca said. “And they’re acknowledging that if they don’t, they might not have the luxury of time and building it on an organic, greenfield basis.”

McCain blasts draft-dodging Trump for Vietnam ‘bone spur’ excuse https://briefnews.eu/mccain-blasts-draft-dodging-trump-for-vietnam-bone-spur-excuse/ https://briefnews.eu/mccain-blasts-draft-dodging-trump-for-vietnam-bone-spur-excuse/#respond Mon, 23 Oct 2017 15:01:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mccain-blasts-draft-dodging-trump-for-vietnam-bone-spur-excuse/

Arizona Senator John McCain appears to have taken a swipe at President Donald Trump for avoiding the army draft during the Vietnam War.

In an interview aired on C-Span on Sunday, McCain criticized those who were able to avoid serving in the military by citing medical conditions in comments about draft deferment.

“One aspect of the conflict by the way that I will never ever countenance is that we drafted the lowest income level of America and the highest income level found a doctor that would say that they had a bone spur,” McCain said. “That is wrong. That is wrong. If we are going to ask every American to serve, every American should serve.”

McCain was speaking about the Vietnam War and its effects on American society. He said the “gradual escalation” of the conflict strengthened the enemy’s resolve and led to repercussions like, “the New Age, the use of drugs [and] demonstrations,” that split society in the US.

“It was a tumultuous time, and most of it was bred by the conflict,” McCain said, before going on to make the bone spur comment.

Trump received five separate deferments from the military draft during the almost-20-year war in Vietnam. The first four were education deferments and the fifth was for bone spurs, bone protrusions caused by a buildup of calcium.

Bone spurs can be treated through stretching, and sometimes surgery. Trump has been hazy on the details of his medical exemption when asked about it, and claimed to have forgotten which heel was affected by the bone spurs. He said his healed up over time.

He was granted a one-year medical deferment and then kept that status from 1968 to 1972. He was then granted 4-F status, meaning he was permanently disqualified from service.

“For years and years it was the lowest income Americans, which means a lot of minorities, that were forced to go and fight. To me, that’s a black mark on the history of our country, asking those with lowest income level to go and do the fighting for us while the wealthiest stay home,” McCain said.

Bill Clinton was saved from the draft by enrolling in a military officer training program that he didn’t join. Former Vice President Dick Cheney got five deferments, while George W Bush got a position in the National Guard, meaning he didn’t have to serve overseas.

McCain is a Vietnam war veteran who was held by the Viet Cong as a prisoner of war for five years. McCain is a vocal supporter of US interventions overseas, so much so that the neo-conservative think-tank the Cato Institute said he is a militant hawk, describing him as being “even worse than Bush.”

Trump and McCain have exchanged insults throughout Trump’s presidential run, with the president claiming McCain was not a war hero because he had been captured.

Hurricanes Irma and Harvey Spur the First Employment Decline in 7 Years https://briefnews.eu/hurricanes-irma-and-harvey-spur-the-first-employment-decline-in-7-years/ https://briefnews.eu/hurricanes-irma-and-harvey-spur-the-first-employment-decline-in-7-years/#respond Fri, 06 Oct 2017 15:17:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hurricanes-irma-and-harvey-spur-the-first-employment-decline-in-7-years/ On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the U.S. labor market shed 33,000 jobs in September—the first decline in the total number of paid positions in the economy in seven years. The unemployment rate, however, fell to 4.2 percent from 4.4 percent. (The unemployment rate doesn’t directly measure job loss, rather reflects the number of Americans who say that they are unemployed and actively seeking work.)

Economists had expected a small uptick in the jobs figure—around 80,000 added for the month. But instead the number fell, although only trivially, likely due to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which ravaged the Southeast and resulted in declining economic activity at restaurants, bars, and in the construction industry. Economists believe that the economy should recover from these acute crises. The BLS’s data do not cover Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, where damage has been even more significant.

Despite September’s losses, the labor market is still performing reasonably well, adding an average of 148,000 jobs per month since January. Even as the economy suffered losses due to hurricanes, other areas, including healthcare and transportation, experienced significant growth in September.

But there are still causes for concern: Labor force participation is stalled at 63.1 percent, and wage growth continues to be middling. In September, wages reached $ 26.55—a 0.45 percent increase from August and a 2.9 percent jump from this time last year. But that improvement could also be storm related, since many of the workers who lost jobs during the month were likely low-wage employees, leaving the remaining wages a pinch higher.

Regeneration goals: Everton FC's new home could spur £1billion boost to local economy https://briefnews.eu/regeneration-goals-everton-fcs-new-home-could-spur-1billion-boost-to-local-economy/ https://briefnews.eu/regeneration-goals-everton-fcs-new-home-could-spur-1billion-boost-to-local-economy/#respond Fri, 29 Sep 2017 09:44:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/regeneration-goals-everton-fcs-new-home-could-spur-1billion-boost-to-local-economy/

Although still at consultation stage, the Premier League club’s move from Goodison Park would speed up the £5.5billion regeneration of Peel Land and Property’s Liverpool Waters, which is expected to include a new creative district – Ten Streets – and a new cruise terminal to boost tourism in the city and beyond.

The Everton stadium has been heralded a “game-changer” for the city, bringing an estimated £900million Gross Value Added to the region’s economy through creating 12,000 jobs during the construction phase and channelling £255million through local supply chains and services.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Liverpool to embrace one of the most significant and unique regenerative investments the city has ever seen,” says Iain Jenkinson, senior director of planning and development at real estate and investment firm CBRE, which is working with Everton on the stadium project.

“The economic contribution to the city of Liverpool through Everton’s new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock, the catalytic effect it will have on surrounding neighbourhoods, and the equally important Goodison legacy project make this package of projects a game-changer for the city,” says Jenkinson.

“In addition, it will further enhance the city’s international reputation for delivering major transformational projects on such a large scale.”

This reputation has been built on the transformation of Liverpool’s 19th-century Albert Dock from dereliction in the early 1980s to a Unesco World Heritage site today.

Now full of shops, bars, restaurants and museums, along with neighbouring Pier Head, the Grade I listed waterfront has plans to build a new pavilion along Salthouse Quay to act as a more pedestrian-friendly gateway to the waterfront and connect up to Liverpool One shopping centre and the rest of the city.

In the past few years contemporary-styled new-build flats have been snapped up on the waterfront and older buildings renovated and transformed into residential property.

As Simon Macbryde, chairman and managing director of Macbryde Homes, says: “The changes that Liverpool city centre has gone through in recent years are phenomenal and there’s no doubting that Merseyside is an increasingly in-demand area among all purchasers.

“Now, more than ever, Liverpool is a desirable area for families, first-time buyers and downsizers alike to consider.”

Macbryde Homes has a new development of four-bedroom family homes at Kingswood Manor, a 10-minute drive from the city centre, in Woolton Village, which has independent shops, restaurants and pubs and easy access to transport links.

Just one house on the 10-house development remains for sale, the show home, which is on the market for £699,995 including curtains, carpets and landscaping (07885 875539; macbryde-homes.co.uk).

“Our Kingswood Manor development is on the doorstep of Liverpool’s exceptional local employment market and the area’s enviable transport connections,” adds Macbryde.

More family-sized new-build homes include Redrow’s nearby Woolton Fields, just around the corner from where John Lennon grew up, in Woolton.

Three and four-bedroom detached houses are for sale from £389,995 (0151 515 1846; redrow.co.uk).

On the outskirts, six miles from the city at Aintree near the Grand National racecourse, Persimmon Homes North West is building mews homes, detached and semi-detached houses at The Paddocks, where prices for three-bedroom detached houses start from £169,995 and four-bedroom detached houses from £221,995 (0151 541 2860; persimmonhomes. com).

With more homes due to be built in the old docklands area, what is the betting that Liverpool is odds-on favourite to become the North West’s most exciting city?

In the rarified air above mainstream luxury-brand flagships from Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW exist the ultra-exclusive, hand-built sedans from Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin, and Bentley, each offering 12-cylinder power, the choicest material furnishings, and indubitable pedigrees. Given these cars’ unapologetic price tags, a normal person might expect them to surpass any off-the-rack Audi A8, S-class Benz, or 7-series Bimmer in every respect. Or at least most respects. Or at least in terms of the luxury features, right? READ MORE ››
