The US government killed off its net neutrality rules in June of this year, but that doesn’t mean no one is monitoring whether carriers are blocking or throttling online services.

Northeastern University researchers led by computer science professor David Choffnes recently determined that Sprint was throttling Skype. Their finding was based on an analysis of user-initiated tests conducted with Wehe, an app for Android and iPhone that the researchers developed to detect throttling. About one-third of the tests detected Sprint’s throttling of Skype, Choffnes said.

If the findings are correct, Sprint would be violating a Federal Communications Commission rule requiring Internet providers to disclose throttling. Even though the FCC no longer bans throttling itself, the agency requires ISPs to publicly disclose any blocking, throttling, or paid prioritization.

Virtually every major US carrier offers one or more free services (however temporary) with at least one of its plans, so how is Sprint going to compete? By including more services, naturally. The carrier has launched an Unlimited Premium plan that, for $ 90 per month, adds Amazon Prime and Lookout Premium Plus security on top of the Hulu and Tidal services you get with the Unlimited Plus plan. You’re ostensibly saving about $ 480 per year versus subscribing to all those extras on your own. The wireless access itself has been upgraded, too.

It’s still not unlimited in the strictest sense of the word, but you do get more for your money. Premium gives you 50GB of LTE hotspot use at LTE speeds instead of the 15GB you get with Plus, and you won’t face a cap on LTE data when traveling to Canada or Mexico.

Sprint’s strategy is fairly clear: it’s hoping to both upsell you to a pricier plan and, crucially, give you a strong reason to stay with its service. Jump to another carrier and the costs of access to Prime, Hulu and Tidal shoot through the roof — you might stay simply because it’s too expensive to leave.

Even so, it’s potentially a better deal than at other networks if you’re looking for discounts on third-party services. Verizon (our parent company) only provides six months of ‘free’ Apple Music service and 500GB of its in-house cloud storage. AT&T focuses on bundling its live TV service and gives you a ‘perk’ that can include streaming music. T-Mobile, meanwhile, is sticking to free Netflix as its hook. So long as you don’t mind Sprint’s particular mix of services or its local network quality, it might be the better pick if you were going to subscribe to Prime no matter what.

There was no fluke about this effort as Jonker maintained his unbeaten record and careered away with the feature juvenile race way a widening four-and-a-quarter lengths.

The Newcastle youngster’s effort as so impressive he firmed from $ 9 to $ 3.50 favouritism with TAB Fixed Odds for the $ 2 million Magic Millions 2yo Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 13.

Unbeaten Jonker also firmed to $ 11 second favouritism behind Performer ($ 8) for the $ 3.5 million Golden Slipper (1200m) during the Sydney autumn carnival.

Trainer David Atkins confirmed Jonker will now go straight into the Magic Millions without another lead-up run.

“The three weeks to the Magic Millions is perfect,’’ said Atkins, the trainer of many top gallopers over the years including Impaler, Moss Rocket and Reckless Tradition. “The 1200m won’t worry him, either.”

Atkins said Jonker has shown above average ability from the moment the colt was tested at trackwork.

“His second jump-out was very sharp and I thought we might have something here,’’ Atkins said.

Jonker ($ 4), who gave jockey Aaron Bullock a career-best win, ran about a little in the straight but he proved far too good for Skyray ($ 21) with Bondi ($ 3.70) getting up for third, a half length further back.

Favourite Terminology ($ 3.60) was checked soon after the start, dropped out to last, circled the field mid-race and not surprisingly began to tire from the turn, holding on for a game fourth.

Jonker, who won the Max Lees Classic on debut earlier this month, settled second early behind speedy La Pomme De Pin but took control of the race on the final turn.

Bullock added further merit to Jonker’s win when he revealed the colt slipped coming out of the barriers, losing valuable ground.

Earlier, the Team Hawkes-trained Wild Heart created a big impression when he came from last to overhaul to Single Bullet in a thrilling finish to the $ 100,000 Wyong 3yo and 4yo Magic Millions (1200m).

It was an expert piece of placement from the Hawkes stable as they withdrew Wild Heart from an easier race at Canterbury last Friday night to concentrate on the Wyong race.

Hall of Fame trainer John Hawkes said no decision has been made on whether Wild Heart will go to the $ 2 million Magic Millions Guineas (1400m).

“We will see how Wild Heart pulls up first,’’ Hawkes said. “He’s an improving young horse and that was a good, strong win.’’

T-Mobile boasts more loyal customers than any of the other Big Four telecoms, according to BI Intelligence’s exclusive Digital Telecom Consumer survey. 

In fact, almost a quarter of T-Mobile’s subscriber base said they wouldn’t switch mobile carriers for anything. Customer loyalty among the three other big US telecoms is low in comparison:

  • AT&T’s and Verizon’s customer bases aren’t nearly as loyal T-Mobile’s. Only 16% of AT&T subscribers said they wouldn’t switch on account of competing features. And an almost equal share of Verizon’s customers expressed the same sentiment — 15% said they wouldn’t switch.
  • Sprint ranked worst for customer loyalty among the Big Four. Only 7% of Sprint’s wireless subscribers said they wouldn’t switch carriers for anything.

The results are a huge win for T-Mobile — customer loyalty matters to US telecoms now more now than ever, for several reasons:

  • US smartphone penetration is approaching saturation, causing mobile carriers to fight over each other’s subscribers. About 95% of Americans own a cell phone and 77% own a smartphone, according to Pew Research, making new subscribers a rare commodity.
  • To win that fight, mobile carriers are engaging in a price war, which is compressing margins — and making customer volume more important than ever. Average revenue per user across the Big Four dropped to $ 45 in Q1 2017, from $ 49 in Q1 2014. To remain profitable, carriers need to maintain or grow their customer base.
  • The end of the two-year contract has made it easier for consumers to switch providers. Consumers have long been tethered to their carriers via contracts — being able to switch carriers quickly and without penalty makes loyal customers especially valuable for telecoms. 

But a more loyal customer base can only go so far in protecting T-Mobile from aggressive competition. Forty-two percent of T-Mobile subscribers said they’d switch to a provider that offered better coverage where they live. This is higher than both AT&T and Verizon. 

BI Intelligence’s Digital Telecom Consumer survey examines consumers’ preferences and ratings of the major US telecoms and the features they provide. It rates Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, and other mobile carriers on loyalty and user experience, and it looks at consumers’ real must-haves. Now that Sprint’s would-be merger with T-Mobile has been called off, how is it going to fend for itself? By getting a little help from its parent company. SoftBank has revealed plans to increase ts stake in Sprint, whether through stock deals or other means. It’s not saying when it will up the stake or by how much, but it doesn’t expect to boost its stock share to 85 percent or more. The Japanese tech company isn’t shy about why it’s making the move, at least: it’s about giving Sprint a long-term future.

Sprint is a “critical part” of SoftBank’s plan for the US, SoftBank chief Masayoshi Son said. His company wants to be ready for a world where connected devices are everywhere, and owning a “world class” wireless network is key to making that happen.

The increased stake answers a lingering question: if Sprint couldn’t count on the T-Mobile merger, was SoftBank willing to go the extra mile and make sure its American network was in good financial shape? Clearly, the answer is yes. In theory, this gives Sprint more breathing room as it gets its house in order and improves its network to compete with fast-moving rivals.

Just because Sprint was jilted at the altar doesn’t mean its weekend was all bad. The carrier has struck a deal that will turn Altice (the French company that bought CableVision) into an American wireless provider. Under the agreement, Altice USA will have “full” use of Sprint’s network for nationwide vocie and data service. In return, Altice will use its broadband network to help Sprint “densify” its coverage as it adds legions of small cell sites.

There was no mention of when Altice’s service will be available, and Sprint didn’t say how soon it would piggyback on Altice’s cables.

As with Comcast’s Verizon-based Xfinity Mobile, Altice isn’t likely hoping to become a major force in the American wireless industry. Rather, it’s a way of sweetening the pot for cable subscribers: you can get your internet, TV and cellphone service through one company (no doubt with a bundle discount). It shows how cellular is quickly becoming a must-have for companies that were once content to stick to landlines.

For Sprint, this deal is more urgent. Although its finances are improving, it’s still struggling to compete with T-Mobile and other big carriers — and network performance plays a role in that. If it can accelerate its coverage improvements, it may keep more customers and lure people frustrated with its competitors. This doesn’t mean that Sprint’s network will receive a dramatic speed boost, but you may see fewer overcrowded cell sites and coverage gaps.

Sprint has been filing patent lawsuits over VoIP for more than a decade now, and the company may have just scored its biggest payout yet. On Friday, a jury in Sprint’s home district of Kansas City said that Time Warner Cable, now part of Charter Communications, must pay $ 139.8 million (Verdict Form) for infringing several patents related to VoIP technology. The jury found that TWC’s infringement was willful, which means that the judge could increase the damage award up to three times its value.

“We are disappointed with the outcome and are considering our options,” a Charter spokesperson told Bloomberg News, which first reported the verdict. A Sprint spokesperson said the company was pleased with the verdict, which represented its “full damage demand.”

The VoIP space has seen more than its share of patent lawsuits. Sprint pounded an $ 80 million patent settlement out of Vonage following a 2007 jury verdict. In 2008, Sprint sued several smaller VoIP providers, compelling companies like Big River Telephone Co., based in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, to pay for a license to Sprint’s patents.
