Fans may be excited for the April 19 return of 9-1-1 (8/7c) and 9-1-1: Lone Star (9/8c), but after watching Fox’s just-released teasers for each show, you might not be so eager for their stories to progress.

First up, 9-1-1‘s teaser offers us our first look at the arrival of Maddie and Chimney’s baby, as the mother-to-be is rushed from her desk to the hospital. (“It’s all happening so fast!”)

We also get a heartbreaking glimpse of baby Nia being taken from Hen and Karen (“They’re tearing our family apart!”), as well as a fed-up Athena reacting to multiple casualties caused by a drunk driver.

Check that out below:

Over on Lone Star, we pick up with the aftermath of Judd and Grace’s car crash, with Marjan asking the question on every viewer’s mind: “What the hell happened?!” And the fact that Owen says they were in the water “too long” is doing nothing to sway our concerns for the couple.

As showrunner Tim Minear previously told us, “The premiere will pick up 18 years ago, not right where we left off. It actually is kind of [a ‘begins’ episode] for Judd and Grace. It’s the story of how they met, how they fell in love and what they mean to each other. We’ll also tell you what happened when they went off the bridge, and who — if anyone — survives.”

Watch that teaser below:

Superman & Lois Spring Finale Drops Another Captain Luthor Bombshell https://briefnews.eu/superman-lois-spring-finale-drops-another-captain-luthor-bombshell/ https://briefnews.eu/superman-lois-spring-finale-drops-another-captain-luthor-bombshell/#respond Wed, 24 Mar 2021 04:35:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/superman-lois-spring-finale-drops-another-captain-luthor-bombshell/

An annual tradition celebrating “the best of Smallville” turned into a festival of frights on Superman & Lois‘ spring finale, which ended with another jaw-dropping detail about Captain Luthor’s backstory.

The super-couple’s troubles began when Sharon Powell’s son Derek mysteriously returned home, conveniently unaware of any voicemail he supposedly sent to his mother. Lois and Chrissy could tell that something wasn’t adding up about his story, but Sharon insisted that there was nothing further to investigate… which is literally the worst way to get a journalist off your tail. So when a fire suddenly broke out at the community center (spoiler alert: Derek lost control of his newly acquired laser vision!), The Smallville Gazette‘s best/only reporting team sprang into action.

But while she was busy keeping tabs on Morgan Edge’s newest X-Kryptonite soldier, Lois was unaware that another interested party was hot on her trail — Captain Luthor! (I know he’s the “bad guy” or whatever, but I was honestly just glad to see him back.) Posing as a LuthorCorp employee-turned-Reuters technology reporter, he approached Lois with an offer to throw more dirt on her Morgan Edge pile, one she met with her usual mix of intrigue and suspicion.

Meanwhile, Chrissy caught Derek doing business (and I do mean biz-nass) with Leslie Larr outside of a shady Edge-owned facility. Following her personal mantra (WWLD, aka “What Would Lois Do?”), Chrissy followed them into the building just in time to see her put him into a mystery machine — and not the fun Scooby-Doo kind. That’s when Superman finally RSVP’d to the party, chasing a re-energized Derek over various cornfields until they were both shot out of the sky by Captain Luthor.

“He resurrected me, Kal-El!” Derek told Supes. “You’re not alone anymore!” But before he had a chance to tell Clark what that meant, Derek announced, “I’m already dead!” and then blew up. (RIP!) By the time Captain Luthor caught up to the wreckage, his target had flown the coop.

As always, this week’s episode also gave us a healthy dose of teen drama, from Jordan and Sarah going on their first (and last?) date to Jonathan getting dumped (over the phone, no less!) by Eliza. In his grief, Jonathan transformed into a drunken tornado of misery, first by telling his dad that he wants to move back to Metropolis (“This town is my Kryptonite!”), then by crashing Jordan’s date and harassing Sarah. She wasn’t thrilled that Jordan immediately took his brother’s side over hers, but she agreed to still be his friend — so there’s a silver lining for ya.

Clark’s conflict with Jonathan inspired flashbacks to his own final days in Smallville, when he apparently had similar clashes with his mother. (“I wasn’t sent here to be Martha Kent’s son!” he once said when she tried to keep him from taking to the streets as a masked vigilante.) Clark admitted that he regrets leaving home the way he did, so he offered Jonathan a one-time-only “get out of jail free” card in exchange for his son agreeing to give Smallville another chance.

But before we had time to fully process Clark’s questionable parenting, we learned another twisted truth about Captain Luthor. When his computer reminded him that the Lois of this world is nothing like the Lois of his own, he angrily replied, “Everything about her is the same. Everything except that she married someone else!” That’s right, C.L. and L.L. are man and wife in his world. Jaw, meet floor.

Honestly, I’m still so focused on that Lane-Luthor reveal, I have no bandwidth to worry about Tag attacking Jordan in the woods in the episode’s final moments. He’ll be fine.

Supergirl Finale Recap: Did Kara and Lena Make Nice? And Whose Fate Is in Limbo Until Spring 2021? https://briefnews.eu/supergirl-finale-recap-did-kara-and-lena-make-nice-and-whose-fate-is-in-limbo-until-spring-2021/ https://briefnews.eu/supergirl-finale-recap-did-kara-and-lena-make-nice-and-whose-fate-is-in-limbo-until-spring-2021/#respond Mon, 18 May 2020 04:13:47 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/supergirl-finale-recap-did-kara-and-lena-make-nice-and-whose-fate-is-in-limbo-until-spring-2021/

Supersuits were in great supply as Supergirl brought Season 5 to a close, one episode early and with the CW series not expected to return until, like, Spring 2021. Once the dust cleared, whose life was left in limbo for this super-long hiatus?

Knowing that Rama Khan and Gamemnae are planning their big move, Kara was ready to swing into action — with newly supersuited Alex among those at her side! — but she knew she’d need protection against the gods’ abundant stash of kryptonite. (Shhh, no one tell Luke Fox.) Lena offered to fashion her a protective suit (as she did in the pre-Crisis world), so as Kara sneaked over to Lena’s lab, J’onn and M’gann disguised themselves as the Girl of Steel to team with Nia and Alex and draw out/distract Rama Khan and the other immortals. As they did so, Nia repeatedly dreamed of Brainy being green and in jeopardy — but why?

Well, Lex had been afforded entry to the Leviathan spaceship hidden within the “casino,” outfitted with a pin that protects him from the powerful force field surrounding it. Later looped in on the ship’s location and aware that Lex plans to first kill Supergirl and all her friends before letting him deal with the gods, Brainy decided to sneak into the ship, to upload code that would shrink Rama Khan et al. But to do so required him standing at the console, not moving, for a full 10 minutes, all as the deadly force field attacked him. But with his female counterpart at his side, Brainy endeavored.

Kara and Lena meanwhile saved Eve during one showdown with the gods, and later leaned on her for intel on Lex’s plan. Admitting that her mother had been threatened, Eve detailed the scheme to draw billions of people into the Obsidian VR world for the Unity Festival… and then kill them all. Unable to power down the tech, Kara entered the virtual space herself to deliver one of her speeches. To help things along, Lena multiplied Kara so she could have one-on-ones with each user, speaking not of hope, actually, but about believing in people. Meanwhile in the real world, Lena talked down Andrea, who had been “activated” by Gemma, from killing Supergirl, saying that she believes in her. Just as Brainy’s female other nudged him along, saying she believed in him.

When all was said and done, Kara talked the users into exiting the VR world, Brainy shrunk the gods, and Lena stopped Andrea. Afterwards, Kara — who earlier had given Lena a tongue-lashing for overly punishing her for one understandable lie — officially accepted Lena’s apology, recognizing all that she had done this episode to save her. The two then shook hands and united to take down one last bad guy — Lena’s brother.

Speaking of….

Lex found a grim-looking Brainy on the Leviathan ship, gloating that he knew he would be betrayed in the end. So, Brainy in fact did just as Lex hoped, “bottling up” the shrunk gods. Lex then delivered said container to his mother, saying, “Let’s get to work, doc….”

Reddit user HouseHeisenb3rg explained: “My point is, the showrunners could have easily restored Eleven’s powers if they wanted to, but they are holding out because Eleven would have looked for Hopper if she could, spoiling the ‘mystery’.

Despite saying the fan-favourite is still alive, the user goes on to speculate that Hopper isn’t ‘The American’ referred to in the post-credit scene after the season 3 finale.

The user went on: “But here’s where things get interesting… Despite all the clues, despite all the glimmers of hope, the person in the Russian cell is not Jim Hopper. It is Dr. Brenner. By revealing Dr Brenner is alive and in Russia, they kill two birds with one stone.”

Stranger Things seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix.

Dreams, the first major PS4 exclusive from longtime PlayStation developer Media Molecule, is finally almost here. But if you think its protracted development cycle is anywhere near over, think again.

PlayStation Blog has the news today: starting “this Spring,” gamers will be able to buy the latest “play, create, share” title from the makers of LittleBigPlanet for $ 29.99 ($ 39.99CDN in Canada, €29.99 in Europe). But there’s a catch: this version of the game will be given a loud “early access” label, a rarity on the PlayStation Store.

“If you participated in the [closed] beta and felt like Dreams wasn’t fully featured enough for you yet, or you wanted more Media Molecule game content, then Early Access might not be for you,” Media Molecule director Siobhan Reddy wrote on Wednesday. The sales pitch seems targeted at excited content creators who are ready to dive into the game, even without a full-fledged “campaign” mode or finalized UI and tutorials.

All Blacks spring surprise backline changes https://briefnews.eu/all-blacks-spring-surprise-backline-changes/ https://briefnews.eu/all-blacks-spring-surprise-backline-changes/#respond Wed, 22 Aug 2018 19:50:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/all-blacks-spring-surprise-backline-changes/ HURRICANES pair Jordie Barrett and Ngani Laumape have won surprise inclusions for the second Bledisloe Cup Test in Auckland, creating an All Blacks record in the process.

Coach Steve Hansen was forced into both changes following injuries to Rieko Ioane (hamstring) and inside centre Ryan Crotty (concussion) during the 38-13 hammering of Australia in Sydney.

Ioane was expected to make way for specialist winger Nehe Milner-Skudder but Hansen has restored the raw talent of 21-year-old Jordie Barrett at fullback, prompting a back three shuffle.

Ben Smith shifts to the right wing, pushing in form Highlanders teammate Waisake Naholo, 27, to the left, creating the oldest combined wing pairing in All Blacks Test history.

Smith, 32, is the oldest winger.

In contrast, the midfield is the least experienced — with eight combined caps — since Isaia Toeava and Sam Tuitupou combined against Argentina 12 years ago.

Anton Lienert-Brown is unfortunate to remain on the bench, having impressed for 68 minutes alongside rookie outside centre Jack Goodhue when replacing Crotty in Sydney.

It is a change of fortune for powerhouse ball runner Laumape, who makes his second Test start.

The first was a starring role in the 15-15 third Test draw last year against the British and Irish Lions.

He has struggled to nail down a Test berth since and missed selection in the initial Rugby Championship squad, with Hansen critical of his communication skills.

Rubbish! Blame Wallabies cattle, not the coach

99 Tests, 0 tries: All Black’s embarrassing world record

However, injuries to Sonny Bill Williams and Crotty have earned a reprieve for the former Warriors NRL back.

The only other change to Hansen’s squad is on the bench, where prop Ofa Tuungafasi returns from a rib injury to replace last week’s debutant Tim Perry.

It is the same pack which dominated the Wallabies, most glaringly in the set pieces.

Prop Owen Franks will become the ninth All Black to play 100 Tests and can mark the occasion by locking the Bledisloe Cup away for a 16th straight year.

Hansen said the Wallabies will fight desperately at an Eden Park venue that has become a graveyard for them since 1986.

They’ll also be stinging from a stumbling second half display in Sydney.

“We know that there’ll be a massive response from Australia following their performance last week,” Hansen said.

“Not only are we excited by this challenge, but we’re looking forward to responding ourselves with a better performance.”

ALL BLACKS (15-1): Jordie Barrett, Ben Smith, Jack Goodhue, Ngani Laumape, Waisake Naholo, Beauden Barrett, Aaron Smith, Kieran Read (c), Sam Cane, Liam Squire, Sam Whitelock, Brodie Retallick, Owen Franks, Codie Taylor, Joe Moody

Epsom Derby 2018: Queen Elizabeth wears spring lilac and floral dress for day at the races https://briefnews.eu/epsom-derby-2018-queen-elizabeth-wears-spring-lilac-and-floral-dress-for-day-at-the-races/ https://briefnews.eu/epsom-derby-2018-queen-elizabeth-wears-spring-lilac-and-floral-dress-for-day-at-the-races/#respond Sat, 02 Jun 2018 13:15:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/epsom-derby-2018-queen-elizabeth-wears-spring-lilac-and-floral-dress-for-day-at-the-races/

Epsom Derby enters its second day today, and one of the highlights of the weekend was the arrival of the Queen.

Her Majesty, 92, stood out in a lilac coat which she wore buttoned up.

A purple and diamond brooch was pinned to the coat, and a three strand pearl necklace could be seen underneath the collar.

The Queen matched a pair of simple pearl earrings to the necklace.

Underneath the coat, a purple, pink and green floral dress could be seen.

Completing the look, Queen Elizabeth wore a matching lilac hat which had two large flowers – the same as those on her dress – pinned on to it.

As always, she wore a pair of crisp white gloves and held a black patent handbag in her arm.

A pair of low-heeled black shoes were the finishing touch.

Complimenting the purple colour and bringing out the pink of the flowers in her hat, the Queen wore raspberry coloured lipstick.

Horseracing is one of the Queen’s favourite pastimes, and she rarely misses a big event such as Epsom.

Saxon Warrior is the odds-on favourite to win today’s Derby race.

The Queen has had a busy couple of weeks, hosting a Garden Party with Prince William at Buckingham Palace this week.

She wore a vibrant blue outfit for the occasion, although onlookers were more interested in her sunglasses – an unsual addition for the monarch, who is not often seen in them.

The parties have been held at Buckingham Palace since the 1860s as a way to recognise public service, and the event last week was the second of the year so far.

Previous to this, the Queen joined the rest of the Royal Family to celebrate Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle.

She chose a lime green ensemble created by Stewart Parvin for her grandson’s special day.

And she even co-ordinated with the bride on her wedding day via the jewellery she chose.

The Queen added the Richmond Diamond brooch with pearl drop.

The enormous piece belonged to Queen Mary, just like Meghan’s stunning tiara.

The Queen has worn the piece often, including at her 90th birthday.

Google Maps: This hot spring looks like its been Photoshopped – but can you swim in it? https://briefnews.eu/google-maps-this-hot-spring-looks-like-its-been-photoshopped-but-can-you-swim-in-it/ https://briefnews.eu/google-maps-this-hot-spring-looks-like-its-been-photoshopped-but-can-you-swim-in-it/#respond Thu, 31 May 2018 13:50:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-maps-this-hot-spring-looks-like-its-been-photoshopped-but-can-you-swim-in-it/

Seen from a bird’s eye view on Google Earth, the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA almost appears Photoshopped on first appearance.

The 370 foot-diameter spring boasts many colours of the rainbow.

Its mesmerising hue is vivid blue in the centre, becomes green towards the edge and then morphs into yellow and fiery orange.

The natural wonder has been attracting visitors for over a century after being discovered in the early 1800’s.

Its magical rings of colour are due to the varieties of pigmented bacteria and microbes that live in the mineral-rich waters surrounding the hot spring.

In fact, the colour of the spring can change with the seasons as the beings within live and die.

As tempting as it might seem to dive into the azure waters, it’s certainly not suitable for a dip.

At the centre of the pool, the water  – which boils up from a crack in the earth 121 feet beneath – is so hot it’s sterile.

This is responsible for the bold and clear blue of the spring.

The coolest zone is in the outermost ring of the pool where the temperature is 55 degrees Celsius.

This is home to the most diverse community of bacteria.

The natural wonder is one of the most photographed sights in Yellowstone National Park.

Needless to say it attracts crowds – but also fog on cooler days – so the best time to arrive at the spot is 10am.

The best overhead view can be seen from Fairy Falls overlook.

The area around the Grand Prismatic Spring is devoid of trees and shade so there’s no escaping the sun.

The spring is free to visit 24 hours a day between 20 April and 6 November.

It sits seven miles north of Old Faithful, a famous cone geyser that erupts every 35 to 120 minutes at a height ranging from 80 to 184 feet.

To access the park, you need to buy a seven-day park pass.

Around four million people visit Yellowstone each year.

As well as impressive geysers, you can also see incredible wildlife, waterfalls, lakes, mountains, rivers and more.

In the December 2017 System Guide, we discovered the unexpected. Given the bevy of pre-built computing devices now available, there’s a lot of debate and confusion about building one yourself these days. What’s the goal behind a custom PC build in 2018? What makes a certain hardware choice “right” to support that?

So rather than starting 2018 with a traditional guide—where Ars presents three build ideas and a set of specific hardware to accomplish each—we’re going to take a step back. This will be more of a meta-guide than an actual guide; we’re going to share the methods and mechanics behind putting together your favorite long-running PC building guide. So while this guide will build from a set of three major system design goals like always, this edition will go through each major PC hardware component one by one, focusing more on ideology than instruction, discussing how a specific part does (or doesn’t) contribute to a specific construction goal.

Standard system design goals

It’s not enough to say a system should be “fast” just like it’s not enough to sum up a sports car with its 0-60 time on a track. A gaming-focused system that impressively renders the most demanding scenes in Crysis can still be frustratingly slow to boot… and may handle the same gaming scenes abysmally if you forgot to (or didn’t want to) close your email client or your 30-tab Web browser first. A system with server intentions may effortlessly run five or 10 entire virtual machines but similarly stumble on a single demanding application. Meanwhile, a five-year-old system that doesn’t have very impressive specs might feel surprisingly fast. You know you’re not going to play the latest AAA games in 4K on it, and you don’t expect it to handle 200 tabs in Chrome, but somehow, despite how old it is, such a build can feel comfortable.
