The sporting world produced magic moments aplenty in 2018; the biggest names delivered the goods, the underdogs caused shocks and feel-good moments that will be long remembered. Here, RT Sports counts down our Top 5 ‘Wow’ moments.

1. YAIR RODRIGUEZ STUNS ‘THE KOREAN ZOMBIE’

The UFC celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2018 with a special UFC Fight Night event in the city where it all began, Denver, Colorado.

And a fun night of fights came to a spectacular end with the main event bout between featherweight contenders Yair Rodriguez and Chan Sung Jung.

Chan, better known to his legion of fans worldwide as ‘The Korean Zombie’, looked to be on his way to a hard-fought decision victory in the fifth and final round, but Mexican sensation Rodriguez had other ideas.

With just seconds to go, the pair high-fived, then swung for the fences in a last-gasp bid to score a knockout victory. And as Chan walked forward looking to connect with one final big punch, Rodriguez threw an unorthodox elbow up from his side and connected flush, knocking out the South Korean star in the final second of the bout for the UFC’s knockout of the year.

2. ‘THE PHILLY SPECIAL’ WINS THE SUPER BOWL

When the Philadelphia Eagles met the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in February, they were considered by many to be huge underdogs.

With their star quarterback Carson Wentz missing from their lineup, the team had performed admirably to make it all the way to the showpiece finale of the NFL season with backup quarterback Nick Foles deputising for the Eagles’ injured star.

But against the Patriots, led by all-time great Tom Brady, they faced a team packed with stars who how to win American Football’s biggest game.

The Eagles needed something special, and they produced just that, with one play in particular giving them the confidence they needed to go on and win the game.

With the Eagles camped by the Patriots goal line on 4th and Goal, coach Doug Pederson and quarterback Foles had a quick conversation on the touchline, with Foles asking for “Philly Philly,” the code word for the trick play they’d rehearsed in the team hotel the night before.

Coach Pedersen hesitated for a split second, then nodded, and the rest, as they say, was history as Foles caught a touchdown pass from tight end Trey Burton for a crucial score as the Eagles went on to defeat the Patriots 41-33.

3. THE KHABIB-CONOR RIVALRY

It all started when Russian UFC star Khabib Nurmagomedov confronted fellow Russian – and Conor McGregor’s teammate – Artem Lobov in the UFC fighter hotel in Brooklyn over comments made in an interview.

Then all hell broke loose.

McGregor gathered a group of friends, jumped on a private jet from Dublin and gained entry to the loading bay of the Barclays Center where McGregor proceeded to attack a minibus containing Nurmagomedov and a host of other UFC fighters.

It left two male fighters injured, UFC women’s strawweight champion Rose Namajunas traumatized and Nurmagomedov begging the Irishman to “send me location” so they could settle their feud in person.

McGregor was arrested, charged and negotiated a plea deal to allow him to return to action – against Nurmagomedov – at UFC 229, where the Russian world champion would get his retribution.

Khabib manhandled McGregor for three rounds, even dropping him with a big right hand, before eventually forcing him to quit in the fourth. But it didn’t end there.

Both men are set to learn their punishments from the Nevada State Athletic Commission in the New Year, but what seems inevitable is their paths will cross in the octagon once again.

Nurmagomedov then jumped the cage to attack McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis, prompting a melee to break out at the T-Mobile Arena.

4. RUSSIA SHOCKS THE WORLD AT THE WORLD CUP

When Russia hosted the World Cup in 2018, hopes were high for an exciting tournament packed with entertaining, attacking football. But few could have expected the hosts to perform as well as they did in the tournament.

With some pundits rating Russia as one of the worst sides in the 2018 lineup, the host nation proceeded to shock the world as the not only acquitted themselves well, but progressed to the latter stages of the competition.

An opening-game double from Denis Cherychev helped fire Russia to a resounding 5-0 win against Saudi Arabia in the tournament’s opening game. And the followed up that impressive result with another, as they defeated Egypt 3-1 five days later as they sealed qualification to the knockout stages.

Russia then stunned World Cup holders Spain in the Round of 16 with victory on penalties as they reached the quarter-finals of the competition.

Their incredible run ended on penalties as they lost out to Croatia, but their performance had captured the imagination of the Russian public, and was one of the biggest surprise stories of the summer.

5. TIGER WINS AGAIN

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Tiger Woods at the top of the golfing world, but at the 2018 Tour Championship, he rediscovered his form during a thrilling weekend that saw one of the sport’s greats hit the top once again.

Woods hadn’t picked up a significant title for five years but at East Lake he produced a superb series of rounds to secure victory, with his walk up the final fairway one of the memorable moments of the year as he was joined by hundreds of fans, who accompanied him to the final green, where he put the seal on a win to remember.

Curling sweeps back into the sporting landscape after quick summer escape https://briefnews.eu/curling-sweeps-back-into-the-sporting-landscape-after-quick-summer-escape/ https://briefnews.eu/curling-sweeps-back-into-the-sporting-landscape-after-quick-summer-escape/#respond Sat, 25 Aug 2018 07:14:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/curling-sweeps-back-into-the-sporting-landscape-after-quick-summer-escape/

Put away the shorts and bring out the brooms — curling is back for another season after a quick retreat during the summer months.

This winter CBC Sports is expanding its curling programming to include more international and domestic events, giving fans of the sport hours of coverage.

It begins this weekend as CBC Sports is live-streaming the World Curling Tour Baden Masters event in Switzerland to kick off the competitive international season. There are no Canadian teams competing in the event, but recognizable names are all over the scoreboards.

The biggest name at the Baden event is Nik Edin. The Swedish skip is coming off one of his best years to date, capped off by a world championship in Las Vegas this past April. Edin defeated Canada's Brad Gushue in the final in what was a rematch of the title game a year earlier. He also won the silver medal in PyeongChang after dropping the championship game to John Shuster's American squad.

Edin's team will be competing against 19 other foursomes all looking to set the tone for the season. Other noticeable teams competing include the Olympic bronze-medallists from Switzerland, led by skip Peter de Cruz. The upstart and youthful Bruce Mouat squad from Scotland is also competing.

After Canada's men and women failed to win a medal for the first time at the Olympics, many questioned whether or not the rest of the world had caught up to or even surpassed Canada in curling power. This despite Canada's gold medal in mixed doubles' debut at the Olympics by Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris.

But that conversation was muted in March after Jennifer Jones won the women's world championship in Thunder Bay and Gushue made it to the men's championship game in April.

Canada's depth of curling and level of competition prepares teams for the international tests, but the rest of the world's curling teams are spending more time at the big bonspiels and becoming more battled tested.

International talent

World Curling Tour events as well as the Grand Slam of Curling events are now ladened with international talent. Those teams are spending more time in North American playing meaningful curling games against Canada's top talent.

At the end of last year's curling season the athletes were certainly fatigued, compounded by the fact that it was an Olympic season. But that shouldn't take away from the fact that curling is as professional as it gets, minus the big payouts seen in other pro sports.

Curling is now played nine months out the year — many of the curlers also work jobs on the side. Securing sponsorship and winning events are the team's lifelines to being able to live on the road and play the sport.

And so let the roaring game begin in August when most people are still thinking about sitting on a beach rather than sitting in a cold arena watching rocks slide up and down the pebbled sheets.

The curlers are ready, hitting the hacks and back in the house.

'It was cowardly' – Frankfurt sporting director tears into Mesut Ozil over retirement https://briefnews.eu/it-was-cowardly-frankfurt-sporting-director-tears-into-mesut-ozil-over-retirement/ https://briefnews.eu/it-was-cowardly-frankfurt-sporting-director-tears-into-mesut-ozil-over-retirement/#respond Sun, 29 Jul 2018 17:53:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/it-was-cowardly-frankfurt-sporting-director-tears-into-mesut-ozil-over-retirement/ Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director Fredi Bobic has admonished Mesut Ozil as a “coward” for his German national team retirement following ‘racist’ abuse after a controversial meeting with Turkish leader Erdogan in May.

“I think that’s a bit cowardly,” Bobic told Bild am Sonntag. “Ozil’s criticism of social media, especially in the direction of the German Football Association (DFB), is unbearable.

“This blanket charge of racism simply does not correspond to reality. He could have given an interview somewhere, live on TV. For us footballers, the rule is ‘be a man and stand up.'”

Midfielder Ozil, who is of Turkish ancestry, had stated that he believed he was being unfairly singled out for Germany’s poor showing at the World Cup in Russia, in which they were eliminated at the group stages, when calling time on his international career.

The player, 29, said he believed he had been disrespected by the media, who were fickle regarding his stating: “I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose.”

Bobic continued: “I would allow that to a player who is 18 or 19 years old, but a player who has been in the business for so long, 29 years old and world champion, needs to know what this looks like.”

“If he does not know that, then he is either totally naive – I cannot imagine that – or it is calculating and he wanted to be provocative, or else he is alienated, of course, I understand the two hearts that beat in his chest, but nevertheless, you must know that you have a great responsibility.”

In contrast, upon joining up with club side Arsenal, Ozil thanked Gunners fans for their “love” at a pre-season friendly in Singapore.

'He's handed in a transfer request!': Sporting world pokes fun at Boris Johnson resignation https://briefnews.eu/hes-handed-in-a-transfer-request-sporting-world-pokes-fun-at-boris-johnson-resignation/ https://briefnews.eu/hes-handed-in-a-transfer-request-sporting-world-pokes-fun-at-boris-johnson-resignation/#respond Mon, 09 Jul 2018 15:35:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hes-handed-in-a-transfer-request-sporting-world-pokes-fun-at-boris-johnson-resignation/ Boris Johnson has resigned as British foreign secretary, and the sporting world has been quick to poke fun at the Conservative Party politician, especially after his derogatory remarks about the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Denis Balibouse

Downing Street confirmed the departure in a statement which read:“This afternoon, the prime minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as foreign secretary. His replacement will be announced shortly. The prime minister thanks Boris for his work.”

Johnson infamously compared Russia 2018 to the 1936 Berlin Olympics in Nazi Germany, which was largely used as a vehicle for Adolf Hitler’s regime. He also said England’s participation in the competition “would not go ahead as planned” should Russia not admit alleged involvement in the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal in Salisbury.

Following news of the cabinet split, former England international and 1986 World Cup Golden Boot winner Gary Lineker was among the first with a football jargon-laiden jibe comparing Johnson’s resignation to a “transfer request.”

Ex-Premier League star turned broadcaster Stan Collymore hinted that Johnson’s move was all an elaborate plan to allow him time off to travel to support England in their World Cup semi-final versus Croatia on Wednesday in Moscow.

Former England rugby union international Brian Moore was adament Johnson was running away from “delivering what he promised,” while prominent British journalist Krishnan Guru-Murthy unfavorably linked the departure with the England national football team’s success in Russia.

And of course, the Twitterati had their own meme and gif tributes to the shock exit, some supporting the opinions of Collymore that the incident is nothing more than an excuse for a good old jolly-up while watching the foootball.

The departure of former London Mayor Johnson represents yet another blow to the government of Theresa May, who is pushing for a soft Brexit plan that has angered many Conservatives.

Johnson’s quitting follows that of the Brexit secretary, David Davis, and his No 2 at the Department for Exiting the EU, Steve Baker. Rumors began swirling earlier on Monday that Johnson would be leaving his post, as he was holed up in his residence with his closest advisers, missing a scheduled appearance at the West Balkans summit. There were also reports that he missed a Cobra meeting about the Wiltshire Novichok poisoning.

2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door spied sporting flames https://briefnews.eu/2019-mercedes-amg-gt-4-door-spied-sporting-flames/ https://briefnews.eu/2019-mercedes-amg-gt-4-door-spied-sporting-flames/#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2018 16:30:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2019-mercedes-amg-gt-4-door-spied-sporting-flames/

We don’t have long to wait to see the fully revealed Mercedes-AMG GT four-door, since it will be shown in a few weeks at the Geneva Motor Show. As such, Mercedes has been pretty relaxed about people seeing prototypes, having released a few images itself of camouflaged examples. But the real sign that Mercedes doesn’t mind people checking out the car now is the car pictured above with wild fluorescent green flames.

Flame paint schemes usually only look good on classic hot rods, but somehow, this actually kind of works on the Mercedes. That or we’re so shocked to see such a flamboyant livery on a production Mercedes that we’re not thinking straight. Maybe a combination of the two. Either way, we now sort of hope Mercedes will offer a line of flamed GT four-doors.

The wild color scheme isn’t the only interesting thing about this prototype. We also spy what appears to be a fixed rear wing on the rear hatch. We know the GT will have a retractable spoiler thanks to some official wind tunnel photos, but this is taller and more aggressive. It’s also too wide to actually fit within the hatch. There’s a subtle lip spoiler just below the wing, too.

The rear fascia is slightly different from what we’ve seen on other prototypes. Instead of the simple round exhaust tips, the ones on this prototype are larger and shaped to fit the outlet in the bumper. The bumper has a faux diffuser design, too. The wing and more aggressive tail seem to suggest Mercedes will have at minimum a styling package for the car, and at most, a slightly hotter version of the AMG GT four-door similar to the difference between a normal AMG GT coupe and the AMG GT S coupe.

All these questions should be answered at the Geneva Motor Show. We’ll also finally learn what’s powering these sedans. We expect them to use the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8s from the GT coupe line.

Skeleton riders have a habit of sporting some intense helmets — here are the best ones from Pyeongchang 2018 https://briefnews.eu/skeleton-riders-have-a-habit-of-sporting-some-intense-helmets-here-are-the-best-ones-from-pyeongchang-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/skeleton-riders-have-a-habit-of-sporting-some-intense-helmets-here-are-the-best-ones-from-pyeongchang-2018/#respond Thu, 15 Feb 2018 04:31:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/skeleton-riders-have-a-habit-of-sporting-some-intense-helmets-here-are-the-best-ones-from-pyeongchang-2018/ Sungbin Yun of KoreaMatthias Hangst/Getty Images

Skeleton is one of the most high-octane events at the Winter Olympics.

Starting with a dead sprint and a dive, athletes rocket down the mountain at speeds up to 90 miles per hour just inches from the ice as they chase Olympic glory.

But in addition to being some of the most death-defying action you can find in the sporting world, skeleton also features some of the coolest fashion you’ll find this side of the figure skating rink.

Athletes adorn their helmets with jaw-dropping designs that celebrate their country, competitive spirit, and yes even their favorite movies, resulting in amazing images as they race towards the finish line.

Below you can take a look at some of the best helmets skeleton riders have brought to Pyeongchang 2018 thus far.

Akwasi Frimpong of Ghana

Akwasi Frimpong is the only athlete representing Ghana at the 2018 Winter Olympics. His helmet depicts a rabbit escaping the clutches of a lion — a metaphor he has used to describe his life.

Kevin Boyer of Canada

Matthias Hangst/Getty Images

Kevin Boyer is representing Canada in his first Olympics and has been attempting to raise funds to help support his Olympic journey through a crowd-funding campaign. He sports a helmet featuring a Haida-inspired beaver design.

Sungbin Yun of Korea

Sungbin Yun of South Korea is the favorite to win the men’s skeleton event and bring home gold for the host nation. He’s also a big fan of Iron Man — so much so that he’s turn himself into a Tony Stark of sorts as he shoots down the ice.

Hyundai bets big on crossovers sporting diesel, electric, hydrogen powertrains by 2020 https://briefnews.eu/hyundai-bets-big-on-crossovers-sporting-diesel-electric-hydrogen-powertrains-by-2020/ https://briefnews.eu/hyundai-bets-big-on-crossovers-sporting-diesel-electric-hydrogen-powertrains-by-2020/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 02:48:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hyundai-bets-big-on-crossovers-sporting-diesel-electric-hydrogen-powertrains-by-2020/

Hyundai announced a very aggressive crossover strategy for the next couple of years, with a total of eight vehicles launched between now and 2020. One of those is the already revealed sub-compact Hyundai Kona. The other seven crossovers range in size and fuel types, and Miles Johnson at Hyundai confirmed to us that all of them will be coming to the U.S.

The first to launch is the aforementioned Kona, coming in early 2018. Also coming early that year is an unnamed hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. This hydrogen crossover will likely be sized and styled similarly to the FE Fuel Cell Concept shown at this year’s Geneva show. A previous report about the production version stated that it would have a range of about 360 miles. Later that year will be two unnamed crossovers without any indication of size. They will also be joined by an electric crossover.

In 2019, Hyundai has three crossovers planned for release. Early in the year will be a diesel-powered crossover. Hyundai gives no indication of what segment it would compete in, but so far we’ve only seen diesels in compact crossovers such as the Chevy Equinox diesel and upcoming Mazda CX-5 diesel. Mid-year will welcome a midsize crossover, and the year will be capped off with an A-segment crossover. Johnson also confirmed that this A-segment crossover will be smaller than the Kona. It could be an outright replacement for the Hyundai Accent hatchback, which did not return to the U.S. with the new sedan.

Though we don’t have much information regarding the unnamed and unspecified crossovers in the plan, Johnson did confirm that some of the crossovers in this rollout will include redesigned versions of existing offerings. This may include a new Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport, or whatever the Santa Fe Sport will become. The company has previously stated that the Santa Fe Sport will be resized and probably renamed, and the regular Santa Fe would be larger the next time around. These changes would also make room for another small to midsize crossover.

A sporting chance: Could pole dancing & poker be in the Olympics? https://briefnews.eu/a-sporting-chance-could-pole-dancing-poker-be-in-the-olympics/ https://briefnews.eu/a-sporting-chance-could-pole-dancing-poker-be-in-the-olympics/#respond Mon, 23 Oct 2017 03:06:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-sporting-chance-could-pole-dancing-poker-be-in-the-olympics/

For the first time ever, pole dancing and poker have been provisionally recognized by an international sporting body, making them potential events for future Olympic Games.

Both activities have been given “observer status” by The Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), meaning they are both now provisionally regarded as sports.

Other sports in the list of GAISF “observers” include armwrestling, dodgeball, footgolf, kettlebell lifting and table soccer.

“Pole Sports is a performance sport combining dance and acrobatics on a vertical pole,” writes the GAISF on its website.

“Pole Sports requires great physical and mental exertion, strength and endurance are required to lift, hold and spin the body. A high degree of flexibility is needed to contort, pose, demonstrate lines and execute techniques.”

Observer status is the first step sporting federations need to achieve before becoming fully fledged GAISF members, and more importantly to be considered for Olympic participation.

The president of the International Pole Sports Federation (IPSF), Katie Coates, welcomed the “historic” decision.

“The IPSF is very proud to have taken this positive step towards official recognition and the GAISF Observer Status will give our sport the opportunity to develop further, on the national and on the international stage,” Coates said in a statement.
