He works at the local processing plant, slaughtering humans — though, no one calls them that anymore. Since the government initiated "the Transition" after a sweeping virus made animal meat poisonous to humans, eating human meat — "special meat" — is legal, and having personal contact with the specimens is punishable by death.

"Lock Every Door" by Riley Sager

"Lock Every Door" by Riley Sager book cover.

Available at Amazon and Bookshop, from $ 12.22

Riley Sager has written four suspenseful novels, each one balanced between thriller, mystery, and horror, but this one leans the most towards "horror" of the bunch. Jules' new job as an apartment sitter in one of Manhattan's most private and mysterious buildings comes with three rules: No visitors, no nights away from the apartment, and no disturbing the other residents. But the building is not what it seems to be — a dark history is rising within, summoning a race to find the truth before someone else goes missing.

Jack Torrance is looking for a fresh start with his new job at the Overlook Hotel, where he can reconnect with his family and work on his writing in his free time. As winter sets in, Jack's days at the hotel get stranger and stranger, and the only one who notices is Danny, Jack's unique five-year-old son. Full of fleshed-out characters, this slower-paced book doesn't drag — it only builds up the fear to an unforgettable conclusion.

"Dracula" by Bram Stoker

"Dracula" by Bram Stoker book cover.

Available at Amazon and Bookshop, from $ 3.71

We all know the famous "Dracula" persona — the one we mimic every Halloween with plastic fangs and upturned coat collars. But it doesn't really capture the 1897 classic gothic horror story, which depicts Dracula's move to England as he attempts to find new blood, spreading his undead curse along the way. The story is far more horrifying and twisted than you might anticipate, and will definitely change how you view the more heroic portrayals of modern-day vampires.

"The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires" by Grady Hendrix

"The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires" by Grady Hendrix book cover.

Available at Amazon and Bookshop, from $ 13.73

Set in 1990s Charleston, this novel is centered around a book club and the strange happenings around a newcomer who was brought into the club after one of the members was horribly attacked on her way home. This book has all of the southern charm, '90s nostalgia, and savagery that you might expect from the title alone.

"The Other" by Thomas Tryon

"The Other" by Thomas Tryon book cover.

"Imaginary Friend" by Stephen Chbosky

"Imaginary Friend" by Stephen Chbosky book cover.

Available at Amazon and Bookshop, from $ 15.80

Best read with the lights on, "Imaginary Friend" is a haunting story where a young boy named Christopher goes missing in the town to which he and his mother just fled. Six days later, Christopher emerges from the woods with a voice in his head telling him to do one thing: Build a treehouse in the woods by Christmas, or his mother and everyone in the town will never be the same.

"The Hollow Places" by T. Kingfisher

"The Hollow Places" by T. Kingfisher book cover.

Available at Amazon and Bookshop, from $ 15.80

"The Hollow Places" is initially misleading. It starts off cute and funny, but quickly devolves into a terrifying novel with scenes so vibrantly written, they'll be sure to haunt readers long after they close the book. Kara finds a hole in the wall of her uncle's house that leads to a series of alternate realities, riddled with unsettling creatures that feed on fear. The world-building in this book is remarkable — Kingfisher creates something we couldn't previously fathom and yet something we so easily fear.

"The Only Good Indians" by Stephen Graham Jones

"The Only Good Indians" by Stephen Graham Jones book cover.

Available at Amazon and Bookshop, from $ 13.49

This follows four Indigenous men who are being tracked and haunted by an entity that lingers from a crime committed a decade prior. It's a horror story of revenge and identity as the men find they can't outrun the culture they left behind. This eerie story will continually shock you, yet ends so perfectly, you'll almost forgive the brutal scenes you endured to reach the end.

"Rosemary's Baby" by Ira Levin

"Rosemary's Baby" by Ira Levin book cover.

Available at Amazon, $ 24.37

In this classic horror story, Rosemary and Guy are a young couple settling into their New York apartment where it seems the neighbors are taking too keen of an interest in them, especially once Rosemary gets pregnant. The suspense in this novel is palpable, a waking nightmare that walks a thin line between unbelievable and yet completely real. This book is unnerving and sinister, one of the original horror novels that helped popularize the genre.

"The Burning Girls" by C. J. Tudor

"The Burning Girls" by C. J. Tudor book cover depicting a house on fire.

Available at Amazon and Bookshop, from $ 15.81

Reverend Jack Brooks arrives at Chapel Croft looking for a fresh start, yet is welcomed with an exorcism kit and a warning. Horrible things have happened at the church — protestant martyrs were burned centuries back, two teenage girls disappeared 30 years ago, and just a week prior, the vicar hung himself. This is a deeply woven and haunting ghost story, with strange and deadly mysteries throughout.

Sabrina’s Gavin Leatherwood Breaks Down Nick’s Spooky, Shirtless Journey in Part 3: ‘I Cavorted With Sex Demons’ https://briefnews.eu/sabrinas-gavin-leatherwood-breaks-down-nicks-spooky-shirtless-journey-in-part-3-i-cavorted-with-sex-demons/ https://briefnews.eu/sabrinas-gavin-leatherwood-breaks-down-nicks-spooky-shirtless-journey-in-part-3-i-cavorted-with-sex-demons/#respond Fri, 24 Jan 2020 15:27:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sabrinas-gavin-leatherwood-breaks-down-nicks-spooky-shirtless-journey-in-part-3-i-cavorted-with-sex-demons/ “I had no idea what was in store for me this season,” Gavin Leatherwood tells TVLine of Nick’s story in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 3. And neither will you.

The Netflix drama’s eight-episode third part, now available to stream in full, picks up with poor Nicholas Scratch still in Lilith’s custody. But as you’ll see, there aren’t any orange jumpsuits in hell. Lilith apparently prefers her prisoners to remain shirtless, which quickly becomes a running theme for Leatherwood in Part 3.

Sabrina Part 3“In the script, it would say ‘Nick comes in shirtless’ all the time, and everybody started making jokes that the script should actually say ‘Nick comes in wearing a shirt’ when he does, because it’s assumed that every other time will be shirtless,” he says. “As each script came out, it was a fun surprise to see what was coming. I’ve learned how to roll with the punches. And the real tough part about always being shirtless is that I have to eat right and work out all the time, because I never know if I’m going to have a shirt or not.”

It probably isn’t too big of a spoiler to reveal that Nick eventually makes his way out of hell, but even when he rejoins the land of the living, he can’t seem to shake the effects of his time in the underworld. His inability to cope with the (literally) hellish experience manifests itself in some pretty sketchy behavior, including — wait for it — partying with sex demons. Again, literally.

“Maybe I’ve done it in a past life, because it felt oddly familiar, but I’m fairly certain this was the first time in this life that I cavorted with sex demons,” Leatherwood says, adding that those particular scenes required a certain level of comfort with his fellow actors.

“When you’re comfortable with each other, you feel more free to explore certain things,” he explains. “I met [the actors playing the sex demons] once before we started shooting, and they were such lovely, warm, open people. There was always open communication, like, ‘Is it OK if I pull your hair here? … Is it OK if I lick your ear?’ You communicate those things so it makes it more technical technical. That way, you’re not in the moment being like, ‘Hey, get your finger out of my mouth!’”

This Spooky Florida Drive Will Mess With Your Mind https://briefnews.eu/this-spooky-florida-drive-will-mess-with-your-mind-2/ https://briefnews.eu/this-spooky-florida-drive-will-mess-with-your-mind-2/#respond Wed, 21 Nov 2018 12:50:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-spooky-florida-drive-will-mess-with-your-mind-2/ About 60 miles east of Tampa in the small town of Lake Wales, there’s a place called Spook Hill that is steeped in legend — it’s an unsettling experience with a tale to match. The gist: It looks and feels like you’re driving uphill when you’re in fact rolling slowly downhill. And if you believe the local lore, it’s all because of an ancient tussle between a man and a big bully of an alligator.

As the lore goes, a legendary Calusa Indian chief, Cufcowellax, who had settled on the nearby Lake Wailes, engaged in a deadly battle with a bull alligator that was harassing the town. Many years later, when pioneer settlers passed through the area — and, later, citrus workers, too — people started reporting that their horses and mules labored as if they were going uphill on what was, in fact, a downhill slope.

Zwspookhill10

On any given day you will find cars pulling to a stop in the middle of the road.

The tale was passed down over time, as curious folks came to test the effect for themselves. Today, a roadside sign marks the attraction, located a few blocks north of the lake, and on any given day you will find cars pulling to a stop in the middle of the road. “Is it the gator seeking revenge or the chief protecting his land?” a line on the sign inquires. As the legend goes, after the territorial alligator dragged another victim into the depths of Lake Wailes, Cufcowellax engaged in an epic fight with the beast, in which they both died, and is said to have turned the entire lake blood-red. And while not everyone knows about this local legend, nearly all residents in Lake Wales have heard of Spook Hill.

When city worker Alison (who declined to give her last name) did Spook Hill with her younger kids, they loved it and it seemed to work. She recalls, “But when I got older and tried it again, it didn’t seem to work anymore.” She describes the experience as feeling like you’re going uphill, when in reality you’re rolling a little bit downhill. “That’s the spectral aspect of it, I guess,” she adds.

In fact, the effect can be explained by an optical illusion that can make it appear like you’re rolling uphill when the opposite is true. But that’s hardly kept the lore of Spook Hill from leaving its mark on the town. In fact, Spook Hill Elementary School, right near the hill, proudly claims Casper (yes, the friendly ghost) as its school mascot.

Zwspookhill07
Zwspookhill08

The experience is enough of a phenomenon to bring people from everywhere to this remote part of Florida to try it for themselves. Tampa-area resident Lili Papia, 29, remembers the experience “being scary” when she tried out Spook Hill as a kid with her mom and a neighbor. “People even arrive here in buses some days,” says Allison. Sometimes people have experienced the effect, she says, while other times they report nothing out of the ordinary.

And that unknown factor of how you’ll react to Spook Hill might be the very thing that makes this batshit-crazy Florida attraction worth checking out with your own two eyes. “Some people are going to be like ‘It’s out of this world,’ and other people will be like ‘meh,’” says Allison. And if you’re hoping for the former? Well, “it probably will be,” she says.

Horror novelist Stephen King is having a cultural moment with various film and TV projects. The latest is Pet Sematary, coming next year from Paramount Pictures. This is the second film adaptation of the bestselling 1983 novel by Stephen King, and judging from the trailer, it could well prove to be the definitive one.

The story is well-known by now. A doctor named Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) moves his family from the big city (Chicago in the book, Boston in the 2019 film) to a charming small town in Maine. The new house is right by a busy highway on one side and bumps up against a forest in back. So many local pets meet their demise on the highway that the children have set up a “Pet Sematary” in the forest to bury their beloved animals.

Google Maps Street View: Very creepy figures spotted lurking in spooky cemetery https://briefnews.eu/google-maps-street-view-very-creepy-figures-spotted-lurking-in-spooky-cemetery/ https://briefnews.eu/google-maps-street-view-very-creepy-figures-spotted-lurking-in-spooky-cemetery/#respond Wed, 29 Aug 2018 21:28:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-maps-street-view-very-creepy-figures-spotted-lurking-in-spooky-cemetery/

Google Maps Street View has captured a very spooky image set in a graveyard in the US.

The shot is, at first glance, of a picturesque green, wooded area with late afternoon sunlight streaming through the trees.

It was taken at Martha Chapel Cemetery in Texas, USA, which in itself sets a foreboding tone to the image.

Moreover, when you look closer, at the tree directly in front of the camera, the photograph develops a sinister feel.

The face of a little girl can be seen peering out behind the tree trunk. But the girl appears to be oddly grey-faced making her seem all the more ghostly.

If that wasn’t enough to chill the viewer, a second figure lurks behind the little girl.

To the left of the ashen-faced girl and behind a row of trees, gravestones can be seen.

Among them, on close inspection, a hooded figure stands entirely dressed in black.

The figure stands behind a gravestone but the bad quality of the image prevents the user from seeing which direction they are facing. Could it be straight at the little girl?

A video of the image on Google has been viewed over 10,000 times with viewers offering their thoughts on what the eerie figures could mean.

One person commented: “The first looks like definitive proof of something.”

Another added: “Perhaps of a murder or simply could have died in an accident. Either way, its poor soul is out roaming this Earth.”

A third viewer said: “Creepy – gives me the chills!”

This is far from the first time creepy figures have been spotted on Google Maps Street View.

Google Maps has photographed a very normal-looking house on a corner of the street – but what can be seen through one of the top windows is like something out of a nightmare.

In the top left window, a highly sinister figure can be seen lurking, looking out across the street.

Its head can be seen in the top left pane, with two eyes staring intensely at the viewer.

Nothing else can be seen of the figure’s body as the bottom panes appear to be obscured.

The hairless, pale figure is made even more chilling due to its overly long fingers which are help up against the glass.

A person can be seen walking across the street towards the house leaving the viewer almost wishing they could warn them about the sinister figure inside.

In a new article published Monday, The Intercept has now revealed what it describes as secret AT&T facilities across several American cities that are “central to an NSA spying initiative.”

The piece builds on earlier reporting that the website did in November 2016 which focused on one such site in New York City.

The eight locations, which are in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, DC, are “peering” facilities that normally route other telecom companies’ data traffic onto their network as part of their regular Internet service.

‘Perceptions Of The Dead 2’ Tells Sometimes Cute, Sometimes Spooky Ghost Stories https://briefnews.eu/perceptions-of-the-dead-2-tells-sometimes-cute-sometimes-spooky-ghost-stories/ https://briefnews.eu/perceptions-of-the-dead-2-tells-sometimes-cute-sometimes-spooky-ghost-stories/#respond Sat, 23 Jun 2018 13:33:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/perceptions-of-the-dead-2-tells-sometimes-cute-sometimes-spooky-ghost-stories/ GVLbn4.jpg

After a live stream from a haunted hospital, Jill has found herself not just investigating hauntings, but dealing with the fact that ghosts are real. Some of them could even use her help, too, but when she tries to do something for a ghost who’s been following her, she starts to see some of the more unsettling sides of ghosts in visual novel Perceptions of the Dead 2.

Perceptions of the Dead 2 will have you working to find Jill’s missing friend, Tyrone, while also doing what they can to help out a spirit in need. Doing this will require a little help from Jill’s friends to get the job done, and you can get to know these charming, quirky people while you’re all working together. Just be careful of the decisions you make involving these people, as you can accidentally change the course of the story in some dangerous ways with some seemingly innocuous choices.

Perceptions of the Dead 2 is gorgeous to behold with some truly wonderful characters and connections between them, offering a narrative treat for those who like stories of friendship and scary things like living in the world of the dead. But with great pals, including some less-than-living ones, is it really all that scary any more?

Perceptions of the Dead 2 is available for $ 7.99 on Itch.io and Steam. For more information on the game and developer Ithaqua Labs, you can head to the developer’s site or follow them on YouTube and Twitter.
