Several top drivers have lost their primary sponsor in recent years or will lose them next season, including 7-time champion Jimmie Johnson, 2017 champion Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Larson, and Kasey Kahne, among others.

According to the Monterey Herald, and also reported by Autoweek, Laguna Seca is getting a new title sponsor and as a result, a new name. The track is currently known by the official name of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, a less-than-elegant name that goes away soon because Mazda is ending its sponsorship on March 31. The newspaper reports that the new sponsor is WeatherTech, and the new name, arriving on April 1, adds a word: WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca.

We’re not sure why it can’t simply be known as Laguna Seca, since that’s the name that sticks after the sponsors disappear. And we don’t know why adding a word is better. Why would you add syllables to say and letters to type (insert lazy writer joke here)?

It seems that those in charge of the track are happy with the deal, though. The Monterey Herald reports the deal is for five years of sponsorship at a cost of $ 5 million and that it’s about two-thirds of what Mazda was paying. But the newspaper also reports that the track won’t be providing the same track access that Mazda needed, and it may attract other automakers to the track when the track’s name isn’t partly that of a competitor.

THEY have the game, history and runs on the board and now coach Lisa Alexander says the Diamonds have the backing to become one of Australia’s best known sporting teams — male or female.

For the first time the Diamonds have taken aboard a naming right sponsor as they plot their defence of the Commonwealth Game crown in 2018 and world title a year later, showing the increasing power and recognition of women’s sport.

Samsung Australia has extended its relationship with one of Australia’s most powerful women’s sports — and most successful national teams — after teaming with the Diamonds in 2016 with the Rethink Role Models campaign.

The campaign featured five top players and was designed to show the positive impact sport and good role models can have on lives.

Experts will work with Netball Australia and the Diamonds High Performance team to develop tools to help the Diamonds train better and review their performances using new technology such as Samsung Gear 360.

Alexander said the Diamonds will benefit both from the technology of the company and its reach to global audiences.

“We have always said we wanted to be as well known as the All Blacks and that’s part of this partnership,” Alexander said.

“Getting the Diamonds known in India with its population, particularly in Asia where the shops are everywhere.

“We want to be the best known sporting team, not just women’s team.”

The Diamond are currently in camp in Canberra preparing for the Quad series in August and the Constellation Cup in October.

Delta Air Lines pulled its sponsorship from New York City’s Public Theater on Sunday because one of its plays depicts the assassination of a politician who looks like President Donald Trump.

The theater company’s production of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” features actors wearing modern dress and a blond, business suit-wearing title character. The character is stabbed to death in a bloody scene midway through the play.

“No matter what your political stance may be, the graphic staging of Julius Caesar at this summer’s Free Shakespeare in the Park does not reflect Delta Air Lines’ values,” Delta said in a statement. “Their artistic and creative direction crossed the line on the standards of good taste.”

The play is running through June 18 as part of the Public Theater’s popular “Shakespeare in the Park” series in Manhattan’s Central Park.

Hosts of the Fox News morning program “Fox and Friends” criticized the play earlier Sunday.

“A disgusting New York City play depicting the president brutally assassinated, all while being funded by your taxpayer dollars,” a Fox host said as she introduced a segment about the play.

Donald Trump Jr. chimed in as well, tweeting a Fox News article about the segment and asking “Serious question, when does ‘art’ become political speech & does that change things?”

Before pulling its sponsorship, Delta responded to the Fox News tweet with the statement, “We do not support this interpretation of Julius Caesar.”

A note on the play’s website, from director Oskar Eustis, addresses the provocative scene.

“‘Julius Caesar is about how fragile democracy is. The institutions that we have inherited from the struggle of many generations of our ancestors, can be swept away in no time at all,” it reads, in part.

“The difficulty in determining the protagonist of ‘Julius Caesar — there are at least four credible candidates — is not a formal weakness of the play, but rather essential to its structure. When history is happening, when the ground is slipping away from under us and all that is solid melts into air, leadership is as transitory and flawed as the times.”

Olympic sponsorship rights holders are looking to match their respective ad campaigns with athletes that can help showcase their brands.

Contrary to what many people believe, athletes in Canada don’t really hit the sponsorship windfall after an Olympic Games. It doesn’t matter if you win gold or break records because, once the Games are over, the money moves elsewhere.

Sponsorship dollars are only really allocated to Olympic athletes during and leading up to the Olympics. That means athletes’ only real earning power comes now — in the months before the Games.

Look for brands to capitalize on these classic marketing themes featuring some of Canada’s favourite Olympians:

The comeback

Everybody loves a good comeback story, and nobody fits that bill better than Mark McMorris. Look for the star snowboarder to be heavily featured as he makes the journey back from the devastating injuries he sustained in a backcountry crash this past winter.

Since he’s already been preliminarily named to the Olympic team, McMorris is a low-risk investment for sponsors and broadcasters alike.

If a company is willing to take a chance on an athlete who may not make the Games, the best story might be Denny Morrison. The speed skater is looking to book a ticket to his fourth Olympic Games, but making the 2018 Canadian team will be a tall order.

Morrison nearly died in a May 2015 motorcycle crash that left him with a broken femur, punctured lung, ACL tear, fractured bone in his spine, bruised liver and kidneys, and a concussion. As a further setback, just as Morrison was making progress on regaining his form, he suffered a stroke. If he can do the improbable and make the Canadian Olympic team, expect his story to get some major play.

Sophisticated Olympic sponsors understand the importance of Canada’s first medal of the Games. Global rights holders like Visa, P&G and Coca-Cola will activate their Olympic sponsorship programs in Canada by backing a few individuals as part of their larger global campaign, and those brands will look for athletes with medal potential — especially if they have a chance to be the first Canadian on the podium.

Based on the competition schedule in Pyeongchang, my money is on Erik Guay in the men’s downhill, the Dufour-Lapointe sisters in women’s moguls, or Mikael Kingsbury in men’s moguls.

Women power

On the heels of the success of Canada’s female athletes in Rio last summer, expect more women to be front and centre. Bobsledder Kaillie Humphries’ quest to three-peat, ski crosser Marielle Thompson’s attempt to defend her Olympic title, and the women’s hockey team (especially in the absence of NHL participation) should gain some serious marketing steam.   

Big-name stars

Ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are back at the top of their game and primed to be the face of the Games for Canadians. With strong social followings, commercial appeal and past success, it’s a no-brainer for brands to continue to align with this charismatic duo.

The new kids

Also look for brands to activate with some of the newer, more extreme Olympic sports. Alignment with Sebastien Toutant, Max Parrot (both snowboard big air and slopestyle) and Cassie Sharpe (ski halfpipe) provide a branded voice to a younger demographic with a heightened coolness factor

The Russian government has drafted a bill that, if passed, would oblige auditors to report any operations conducted by their clients that raise suspicion of money laundering or sponsorship of terrorism.

The draft was signed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev last week, but the text of the document was published on the government’s web-site this Tuesday. It orders that the Federal Law on Countering Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorist Organizations be amended, as well as the Law on Auditing Activities.

The proposed amendments make it obligatory for auditing companies and individual auditors to report all financial operations that could be part of suspicious deals to the authorities. Suspicious deals are defined as those that could be used for laundering criminal income or financing terrorism.

Explanations attached to the document note that it had been developed based on recommendations from the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering, of which Russia is a member.

Russia’s current anti-terrorist law, which was introduced in mid-2016, stipulates a sentence of up to 15 years behind bars for anyone found guilty of financing terrorist groups. Money laundering carries prison sentences of up to seven years, as well as large fines and bans on taking certain public posts.
