Here’s some alright news: ABC’s Tuesday comedy block isn’t splitting up anytime soon. The Alphabet Network has given full-season orders to freshman sitcom The Kids Are Alright, as well as sophomore series Splitting Up Together, TVLine has learned. We hear that nine additional episodes of Kids have been ordered, along with five more episodes of Splitting.
Inspired by executive producer Tim Doyle’s childhood, The Kids Are Alright follows a large Irish Catholic family navigating the trials and tribulations of life in 1970s Los Angeles. The show stars Michael Cudlitz (The Walking Dead) and Mary McCormack (In Plain Sight), as well as Sam Straley, Caleb Foote, Sawyer Barth, Christopher Paul Richards, Jack Gore, Andy Walken and Santino Barnard.
Meanwhile, Splitting Up Together stars Jenna Fischer (The Office) and Oliver Hudson (Scream Queens) as newly divorced parents attempting to cohabitate for the good of their three children. Additional cast members include Bobby Lee, Diane Farr, Lindsay Price, Olivia Keville, Van Crosby and Sander Thomas. The show is executive-produced by Ellen DeGeneres, Emily Kapnek (Suburgatory), Jeff Kleeman (Little Big Shots) and Dean Holland (Parks and Recreation).
TVLine’s 2019 Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect both series’ full-season extensions. These two join previously announced full-season orders for freshman comedy Single Parents, Nathan Fillion’s The Rookie, tearjerker A Million Little Things and Grey’s Anatomy spinoff Station 19.

Amazon is reportedly planning to split its second headquarters, HQ2, between two locations: Long Island City in New York and the Crystal City area of Arlington, Virginia, according to The New York Times.
Some people are speculating as to whether Amazon will be able to double up on some of the proposed financial incentives if it is split between two headquarters.
At least one expert says it’s not yet clear what will happen on that front, as the process has largely been conducted in secret.
On Monday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon is planning to split its second headquarters between two locations rather than picking one city.
Almost instantly, people began to speculate on social media whether this news would mean that Amazon will be able to double up on the tax breaks and financial incentives offered by many of the 20 finalists.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

The pair is no longer in love and planning to divorce. But because they owe more on their mortgage than their home is worth, and because divvying up parental duties is hard enough without adding new locations into the mix, Martin and Lena have decided to continue living together — though pursuing separate lives — while co-parenting their children.
Consider it conscious uncoupling for the somewhat financially strapped set.

Men and women getting divorced at a rate of 8.9 per 1,000 married people
There were 106,959 divorces of opposite-sex couples in 2016, an increase of 5.8 per cent compared with 2015, with men and women getting divorced at a rate of 8.9 per 1,000 married people – up 4.7 per cent.
And the average age of divorce has reached an all-time high at 46 years and one month for men and 43 years and eight months for women, shows latest data from the Office for National Statistics.
While the number of divorces has increased by 6,000 to 107,000 in total, the biggest rise was registered amongst those aged 55 and over.
This is the age group closest to retirement and yesterday (WED) pension experts warned warring couples that their old age savings are likely to be their biggest asset.

A typical couple could have about £120,000 in combined private pension assets if they were to divorce in their 50s, assuming they married when aged 30.
Alistair McQueen, head of savings & retirement at Aviva, said: “With the average age of divorce at an all-time high, it is fair to assume levels of wealth at a time of divorce may also be at an all-time high.
“Those in their 50s today will typically have married in the late 1990s, when aged about 30. Sadly, about one-in-three of those marriages have since ended in divorce.
“Many in their fifties may have combined private pension assets worth more than £120,000.

The average duration of marriages ending in divorce reached 12 years last year – the second highest figure on record. The last, and only other time, this figure was 12 years or longer was in 1972.

This was the second year that the divorce statistics include those for gay couples
Divorce rates among opposite-sex couples in 2016 were highest among men aged 45 to 49 and among women in their thirties (ages 30 to 39). This reflects the fact that women generally marry men older than themselves.
There were also 112 divorces last year among same-sex couples, predominantly women, up from 22 in 2015.
This was the second year that the divorce statistics include those for gay couples, after the introduction of same-sex marriage in 2014.
The last time there was an increase in divorce rate was between 2009 and 2010 and in historical terms the latest figures are well below the peak of divorce in the early 1990s.

Today’s newlyweds are doing better than any couples who married since the early 1970s
Nicola Haines, of the vital statistics outputs branch of the Office for National Statistics said: “Although the number of divorces of opposite-sex couples in England and Wales increased by 5.8 per cent in 2016 compared with 2015, the number remains 30 per cent lower than the most recent peak in 2003; divorce rates for men and women have seen similar changes.
Harry Benson, research director at the Marriage Foundation, said: “The headline rise in divorces during 2016 conceals the reality that the long term trend in divorce continues to head downwards.
“The most recent couples to complete five years of marriage – who got married in 2011 – have experienced 42 per cent fewer divorces than their counterparts who married twenty years earlier in 1991.
“So today’s newlyweds are doing better than any couples who married since the early 1970s.”

But after the death of his wife Jean he found himself rattling around alone in the property’s 10 rooms.
So he decided to downsize – by carving it in half.
The enterprising 82-year-old said: “I converted the house into two, two-bedroom flats and I live in one and have let out the other.
“I am still among friends and neighbours I have known for years, though it was a complex procedure.
“I had to employ an architect, divide water, electricity and gas services, install new staircases, get planning permission and listed building consent and find and manage builders.”
A garage entrance was split so Mr Hill, formerly his local council’s press officer, now has a wide street entrance leading to a 45ft long garage space and upstairs, over a further two storeys, a large kitchen, sitting room, office and two bedrooms.
The other flat has a normal door next to his and has equally spacious accommodation, with two bedrooms, a large kitchen, living room and a rooftop patio overlooking the river.
He leases the second flat to two tenants who love it so much they are considering buying their half.
Mr Hill first fell in love with the riverside former feed mill in the historic old quarter of King’s Lynn, Norfolk, when he moved there from London in the Seventies.
The quirky three-storey building with a warehouse and former stables, in a line of period houses close to the quay, was derelict.
But Ken said: “I used to come from work and eat my sandwiches at lunchtime dreaming about what I would do with it.”
He bought the property, which dates back to the 1500s, for a bargain £5,300 in 1975 and after four years of alterations was able to move in with Jean and their two children. Now he plans never to leave it.
Mr Hill has always had a profitable eye for a bargain which has helped him fund work on the mill.
He said “The property’s needed money down the years, but in 1961 I had bought an old car for £135 and some 50 years later I sold it for £41,000… it was a Lagonda.”

https://briefnews.eu/splitting-up-with-apple-is-a-chipmakers-nightmare/
https://briefnews.eu/splitting-up-with-apple-is-a-chipmakers-nightmare/#respondThu, 04 May 2017 11:11:03 +0000http://briefnews.eu/splitting-up-with-apple-is-a-chipmakers-nightmare/
Apple is such a powerful company that, for third-party suppliers, it’s hard not to become reliant on the cash that it pays you. But when Apple says that it’s done, choosing to move whatever technology you provide in house, the results can be really painful.
Imagination Technologies is one such supplier, famously designing the iPhone’s PowerVR graphics as well as pushing MIPS, a rival to ARM. But back in March, Imagination publicly announced that Apple was ditching it in favor of its own graphics silicon.
Now, Imagination has revealed that it’s going to take Apple to dispute resolution, maintaining that the iPhone maker used Imagination’s IP without permission. It’s the second chipmaker in recent months who believes Apple isn’t playing fair, with Qualcommcounter-suing Apple in its own licensing dispute.
Secondly, Imagination is going to have to sell off MIPS and Ensigma, two parts of its business that aren’t as profitable as PowerVR. Gamers with long memories will remember that MIPS designed the CPUs that lurked inside the PlayStation, PS2 and Nintendo 64. Imagination bought the company in 2013 in an attempt to turn the company into a mobile chip rival to ARM.
But since ARM chips are now the world’s “most used consumer product,” MIPS never stood a chance of competing. As a consequence, the technology remained vital only in the embedded device markets such as set-top boxes, routers and automotive systems.
MIPS was also pushed to hobbyists under the Creator platform, which Imagination described as a “Raspberry Pi, on steroids.” When MIPS is sold, however, it’s possible that any attempts to sell MIPS to hobbyists will be put on ice.
Then there’s the fact that PowerVR’s graphics have been slowly ditched by other members of the mobile industry in favor of ARM’s Mali alternative. As a consequence, Imagination began pushing PowerVR to budget smartphone suppliers, like MediaTek.
The decision to go public with the news was extraordinary, since Apple’s partners are often subject to the same vows of corporate silence Apple itself observes. But it also heralded doom for a small British company that had been involved with Apple since the iPod and, for too long, relied on those licensing dollars for the bulk of its profit.
It’s likely then that, if Imagination survives, you’ll see PowerVR go from a premium brand to one attached to $ 50 and $ 100 devices. The company will also serve as a reminder that, if you get too deeply involved with Apple, there’s always the risk that the party will end.

The Office‘s Jenna Fischer is consciously coupling with ABC, signing on to star in the divorce-themed ABC comedy pilot Splitting Up Together.
From Suburgatory and Selfie creator Emily Kapnek, the potential series is based on a Danish series in which a couple’s marriage is recharged by their divorce. They still live in the same house, alternating weeks, with one living upstairs and doing the parenting while the other lives downstairs in the guest apartment.
Fischer will play the female half of the duo, the always-prepared Lena, who is struggling to navigate a new life after her divorce from ex-husband Martin.
Kapnek wrote the pilot script and will serve as an EP alongside Ellen DeGeneres.
