In the latest TV ratings, NBC’s special preview of Cannonball (which officially premieres July 9 on USA Network) drew 2.8 million total viewers and a 0.6 rating, placing second for the night in the demo. Opening NBC’s Monday lineup, Titan Games (3.9 mil/0.7) and The Wall (4 mil/0.7) tied for the nightly demo win, with the latter hitting a season high in total audience and topping the night in that measure. Elsewhere…. ABC | #BachelorGOAT: JoJo Edition (2.1 mil/0.4) matched last week’s numbers. THE CW | Whose Line (1.07 mil/0.2) and Penn & Teller: Fool Us (991K/0.2) were both steady. The Live+Same Day numbers reported in our daily-ish ratings column do not reflect a show’s overall performance, given the increases in delayed playback via DVR and streaming platforms. These Live+Same Day numbers instead are used to illustrate any trends or high/low superlatives. Happy Fun Ball may stick to certain types of skin. Want scoop on any of the above shows? Email InsideLine@tvline.com and your question may be answered via Matt’s Inside Line.

Welcome to Edition 1.28 of the Rocket Report! Lots of news this week, and much of it good, with Stratolaunch reaching an important test, Firefly winning a sweet contract from NASA, and the H3 getting its first commercial flight. All in all, a nice week in launch.
As always, we welcome reader submissions, and if you don’t want to miss an issue, please subscribe using the box below (the form will not appear on AMP-enabled versions of the site). Each report will include information on small-, medium-, and heavy-lift rockets as well as a quick look ahead at the next three launches on the calendar.

Branson says Virgin will reach space before Christmas. The entrepreneur behind Virgin Galactic told CNN Business at the end of November that he is “pretty confident” his space tourism venture can achieve its milestone by the end of the year. “I obviously would love to prove our critics wrong, and I’m reasonably confident that before Christmas, we will do so,” Richard Branson said. The VSS Unity spacecraft has previously flown to an altitude of 32 miles.

]]>Minister for Racing Martin Pakula has promised an extra $ 33 million, a pledge which prompted Racing Victoria to commit a further $ 7 million to the industry at Wednesday night’s Stella Artois Caulfield Cup launch.
The extra funding would allow Victoria to reclaim the mantle from NSW as Australian racing’s prizemoney leader – and confirm its status as racing’s home.
Victoria currently offers $ 228.5 million annually, across 550 meetings.
NSW offers $ 260 million, across an estimated 700 meetings.
RV intends spreading the increases across all level of the sport, with an emphasis on grassroots competition.
The package, which would be implemented from January 1 2019, would ensure minimum prizemoney for every category of Victorian race would be at least the equal of anywhere in the nation.
The breakdown includes:
* $ 35,000 minimum prizemoney per race at over 170 country race meetings, up from $ 25,000-$ 30,000.
* $ 50,000 minimum prizemoney per race for midweek metropolitan race meetings, up from 30,000-$ 40,000.
* $ 135,000 minimum prizemoney per race for Saturday metropolitan races for three-year-olds and races over 2000m or further, up from $ 125,000.
* $ 125,000 minimum prizemoney per race for Saturday metropolitan meetings, up from $ 100,000.
The promised increases follow a $ 12.4 million boost at the start of the current season, allowing officials to offer more prizemoney for the $ 7.3 million Melbourne Cup, $ 5 million Caulfield Cup and $ 5 million Cox Plate.
RV Chairman Brian Kruger said: “We welcome this strong commitment from the Andrews Labor Government to strengthen their support of Victorian thoroughbred racing and importantly the 92,000 people that actively participate within our industry.
“Victoria has long been regarded as the premier racing state in Australia and like the Andrews Labor Government we are committed to maintaining that position of primacy.
“A vibrant and successful thoroughbred racing industry is great for Victoria. Enhancing returns to our owners, trainers, jockeys and breeders, particularly at the grassroots, is crucial to that.
“80% of our racing is conducted outside metropolitan Melbourne and this package would see minimum prizemoney increases at all country TAB meetings.
“This continues the support for grassroots racing with increases already implemented this season for country non-TAB meetings.
“Victoria is the home of the stayer, hosting 40% of the nation’s staying races including its most famous cups.
“Through this prizemoney package we want to ensure that Victoria remains the destination to race a stayer or a three-year-old.”
Sky Sports News reported earlier this month that the Portuguese was on the verge of signing the deal.
Mourinho won the EFL Cup and Europa League in his first season at Old Trafford and, this season, has United second in the Premier League and through to the Champions League last-16, where they will face Sevilla.
“I am really honoured and proud to be Manchester United manager. I would like to say a big thank you to the owners and to Mr Woodward for the recognition of my hard work and dedication,” Mourinho said.
“I am delighted they feel and trust that I am the right manager for this great club for the foreseeable future. We have set very high standards – winning three trophies in one season – but those are the standards I expect my teams to aim for.
“We are creating the conditions for a brilliant and successful future for Manchester United.”
Ed Woodward, who has been in talks with Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes since last October, said: “Jose has already achieved a great deal as Manchester United manager and I am delighted that he has agreed to extend his commitment until at least 2020.
“His work rate and professionalism are exceptional and he has embraced the club’s desire to promote top quality young players to the first team.
“He has brought an energy and a sense of purpose to everything that he does and I am sure that will continue to bring results for the fans and the club.”
SAINTS ANNOUNCE CARRILLO CAPTURE
Southampton have come to an agreement with Monaco for the transfer of striker Guido Carrillo, Sky Sports reports.
The two clubs have settled on a £19.1m (AU$ 33m) fee which will see Carrillo make the switch to the Premier League.
Southampton have made clear their desire to add a forward during the January transfer window and manager Mauricio Pellegrino earmarked Carrillo as his primary striking target.
As reported by Sky Sports, Saints had a £17.6m offer for the 26-year-old rejected by Monaco earlier in the week.
However, the reigning French champions are now willing to sanction the deal.
Pellegrino previously worked with Carrillo in his native Argentina and rates the forward highly.
Carrillo has made 22 appearances this season but just two of them have been starts in Ligue 1. He has scored 20 goals in over 50 appearances for Monaco since signing from Estudiantes in 2015.
Saints have money to spend following the £75m (AU$ 131m) sale of centre-back Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool, although the fee is to be paid in instalments over the period of his contract.
TUANZEBE LOANED TO VILLA
Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe has joined Championship side Aston Villa on loan until the end of the season.
Tuanzebe, 20, joins Steve Bruce’s side for the rest of the season after the two parties finalised a deal on Thursday.
The defender, who has represented England once at under-21 level, has made five senior appearances for United since signing professional terms in 2015.
Tuanzebe told the Aston Villa’s official website: “I am delighted to be here.
“It’s an exciting time at this football club and everyone is pushing for promotion – that’s the big aim, you can feel that here.
“I am determined to help this club achieve its goal.”
United manager Jose Mourinho has said he would allow Tuanzebe to leave Old Trafford on loan in order for him to gain first-team experience, with Leeds also reported to have been interested in a deal.
Tuanzebe last played for United in their 2-1 victory over CSKA Moscow in the Champions League at Old Trafford in December.
Aston Villa face Sheffield United in the Sky Bet Championship on January 30 with Tuanzebe now available to bolster their defence.
EX-CHELSEA STAR JOINS NEW CLUB
Former Chelsea and France winger Florent Malouda has joined FC Differdange of the Luxembourg National Division.
The 37-year-old has been training with the club since October and has now signed a deal until the end of the season.
Club president Fabrizio Bei said: “He was looking for a club where he could train and we reached an agreement so he could give us a hand until the end of the season.
“We have been top three for ten years and we have played in the European Cup. We want to play in it again this year and Malouda can help us.”
Malouda spent six years at Chelsea after joining from Lyon in 2007 and won the Premier League and Champions League during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Carey Price couldn’t imagine wearing anything but a Canadiens uniform, while Patrick Marleau agonized about trading in his Sharks jersey for a Maple Leafs one.
On Sunday, Price signed an $ 84 million US eight-year extension that means he’ll likely finish his career in Montreal, Marleau left San Jose to sign an $ 18.75 million, three-year deal with Toronto, and longtime running mate Joe Thornton re-signed with the Sharks for one year and $ 8 million.
Meanwhile, the back-to-back Presidents’ Trophy winning Washington Capitals continued re-tooling by signing centre Evgeny Kuznetsov for $ 62.4 million over eight years and trading forward Marcus Johansson to New Jersey for 2018 second- and third-round picks.
Marleau and Thornton were in contact throughout their respective free-agent processes but made different decisions. Toronto’s addition of Marleau gives rookie of the year Auston Matthews an experienced goal-scorer on his left wing.
The soon-to-be 38-year-old spent his first 19 seasons in San Jose and called it “extremely difficult” to pull the trigger and depart.
“I think I’ve worn out a few carpets pacing around the house trying to make this decision,” Marleau said. “The decision took me quite a while to come to, but I’ve made it and I’m happy with it.”
The Canadiens and Maple Leafs haven’t met in the playoffs since 1979. Moves made Sunday put them on a much more likely crash course in the next few years.
Price’s extension, which pays him $ 10.5 million a year from 2018-19 through 2025-26, solidifies the most important position in the sport long term in one of the league’s most fervent markets. Price won the Hart Trophy as MVP and Vezina Trophy as the top goalie in 2014-15 and has the third-best save percentage of any active goaltender since entering the league in 2007-08.
“I never thought about putting on another uniform,” Price said. “I just thought it’d be too weird, I guess.”
It was weird to ever imagine Marleau wearing another uniform other than the Sharks, but he decided to leave San Jose and take a deal with Toronto that counts $ 6.25 million against the cap through 2019-20 and includes a full no-movement clause.
“We won’t be able to do this in a year or so but we have the room and flexibility to do it and not interrupt the process that we have in place, understanding where our young players are and where they will be,” Maple Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello said
Once in the same youthful spot as the Maple Leafs, the Capitals are now in change mode after winning back-to-back Presidents’ Trophies and losing in the second round. They signed centre Evgeny Kuznetsov to a $ 62.4 million, eight-year deal and cleared space by trading forward Marcus Johansson to the Devils for 2018 second- and third-round picks.
With Kuznetsov counting $ 7.8 million, right winger T.J. Oshie $ 5.75 million and defenceman Dmitry Orlov $ 5.1 million and more restricted free agents left to sign, the Capitals needed to shed salary and cleared about $ 4.58 million by trading Johansson.
“There’s a salary cap,” Devils GM Ray Shero said. “If there wasn’t, I’m pretty sure Marcus would still be in Washington.”
The Sharks have to work under a salary cap, as well, but they gave Thornton a raise on a one-year deal that he was comfortable with. More than half the league reached out to Thornton.
“There was a lot of interest — I was kind of shocked,” Thornton said. “Ultimately I wanted to stay in San Jose.”
Price wants free agents Andrei Markov and Alexander Radulov back in Montreal, but that’s far from a guarantee.
“I spoke to both players and we made offers they chose not to take [in order to] to go on the free agent market,” Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said. “That’s their right, and I respect that. But at the end of the day, based on what they’re asking for, it would be impossible to bring back both of them.”
Jaromir Jagr, 45, and Jarome Iginla, 40, remain unsigned, while 40-year-olds Shane Doan and Matt Cullen are deciding whether to play another year.
The Florida Panthers already said they’re not bringing back Jagr. Ron Hextall on Sunday ruled out a Philadelphia reunion for the 45-year-old.
“That’s just not the direction we’re headed in right now,” Hextall said. “I’ve got a great deal of respect for his accomplishments and everything he’s done in the game, but it’s just not the direction we’re going in.”
The Vegas Golden Knights made another trade Sunday, acquiring centre Marcus Kruger from the Chicago Blackhawks for future considerations. Cap-strapped Chicago dumped Kruger’s salary of just over $ 3 million while giving up a useful player who contributed to winning the Stanley Cup twice.
“His work ethic, reliability and strength as a two-way player made him a valuable member of the organization,” GM Stan Bowman said. “We thank Marcus for his many contributions to our team.”
]]>For the third straight June, Flames general manager Brad Treliving swung a big deal at the draft, this time landing 26-year-old defenceman Travis Hamonic from the New York Islanders.
“He moves pucks. He’s a character kid. He’s got some bite to him. I think he’s going to fit good with us,” Treliving said of Hamonic, who came at the cost of one first round pick and two seconds.
One year earlier, Treliving sent two picks to St. Louis for Brian Elliott and a year before that, three picks to Boston for defenceman Dougie Hamilton.
Hamilton proved to be a big score, but Elliott fell flat as a potential No. 1 goaltender and was replaced earlier this month through another trade by Mike Smith, the long-time Coyotes netminder.
Pittsburgh Penguins’ Bryan Rust collides with New York Islanders’ Travis Hamonic during a game on March 24. Hamonic was acquired by the Calgary Flames in a trade with the Islanders on Saturday. (Gene J. Puskar/The Associated Press)
Hamonic, who hails from tiny St. Malo, Man., had a rough final season in New York. He battled injuries and struggled when he did take the ice. The Islanders were out-attempted 64-50 per-60 minutes when he was on the ice in five-on-five situations — the worst mark on the team and a far cry from earlier seasons.
His return to form would further stabilize the club’s top four on defence — surely on a second pair with T.J. Brodie with Hamilton and captain Mark Giordano at the top.
“We like it on paper,” Treliving said of that group, noting the “edge” Hamonic added. “At the end of the day, it’s like a lot of things — paper and reality are always two different things, but we like how we look.”
Also appealing to the Flames was Hamonic’s contract, which has three years left with a potentially reasonable US$ 3.86 million cap hit.
Beyond the usual dealing, the Flames used their top pick at the draft on Juuso Valimaki, a long six foot two defender who had 61 points in 60 games for the Tri-City Americans this past season.
Here’s a look at the other Canadian teams fared in Chicago:
Top pick: Elias Pettersson — 5th overall
The Canucks used their all-important top pick on Pettersson, a wiry Swedish centre who models his game after Washington Capitals ace Nicklas Backstrom. Vancouver wanted a play-making centre who might one day feed Brock Boeser, Jonathan Dahlen, Nikolay Goldobin and some of the club’s other top prospects — many of whom are wingers.
“He’s a guy that can get them the puck,” Canucks general manager Jim Benning said.
Benning lauded Pettersson’s ability to think the game and make others better and liked how quickly he fired his shot.
Pettersson is six foot one but weighs only 165 pounds. He joked that the Canucks hope he eats a lot in the coming years to fill out that long frame.
Top pick: C Ryan Poehling — 25th overall
The Habs used two of their first three picks at the draft on centres, landing on Poehling, an American attending St. Cloud State University, and Joni Ikonen, a Finn who totalled 41 points in 40 games in the Swedish junior league this past season.
“I think he’s got more skill than people would give him credit for with his stats last year in the NCAA,” Trevor Timmins, the Canadiens vice president of player personnel, said of Poehling, who had 13 points in 35 games. “We see a guy that has a chance to eventually play in a top-nine and help the Montreal Canadiens.”
With the 199th overall pick, Montreal picked Cayden Primeau, an American goaltender and son of former NHLer Keith Primeau.
The club did not end up dealing Alex Galchenyuk, but did land defenceman David Schlemko earlier in the week from Vegas.
“This time of year, everybody’s calling,” Habs GM Marc Bergevin said of trade talks involving Galchenyuk, a restricted free agent on July 1.
Top pick: W Kristian Vesalainen — 24th overall
The Jets would have had the 13th overall pick, but that pick went to the Knights to protect veteran Toby Enstrom from selection in the expansion draft. Winnipeg got back the 24th selection and used it on Vesalainen, a six-foot-four Finnish winger who was named MVP of the under-18 world championships.
Already loaded with interesting young players and prospects, the Jets added eight more to the fold in this year’s draft. Among them was 154-pound centre Skyler McKenzie, who tied for eighth in the WHL with 42 goals last year, and six-foot-four Swedish goaltender Arvid Holm.
“Guys that skate was definitely the theme for us,” said Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff.
Size too. The Jets picked three defencemen who were at least six foot three and more than 200 pounds.
Top pick: C Shane Bowers — 28th overall
Senators GM Pierre Dorion conceded that calls were coming in for Dion Phaneuf, but Ottawa ultimately held onto the 32-year-old defenceman at the draft.
The Sens, who lost defenceman Marc Methot to Vegas in the expansion draft, had only four picks in Chicago after mid-season deals for Mike Condon, Tommy Wingels and Viktor Stalberg.
A Halifax native and Sidney Crosby fan, Bowers is a six-foot-two centre who tied for 10th in USHL scoring last year and is headed for Boston University in the fall. The Sens also wanted to snatch a goaltender and used the 183rd overall pick on Jordan Hollett, a six-foot-four netminder from Port Moody, B.C.
Top pick: RW Kailer Yamamoto — 22nd overall
Edmonton had top 10 picks in each of the previous eight drafts, waiting until 22nd overall this time around following the first post-season berth since 2006. Their top pick (22nd overall) went to one of the smallest players in the draft: five-foot-eight, 146-pound right winger Kailer Yamamoto, the WHL’s sixth leading scorer last season.
“I think there’s a lot of role models in the league now — Johnny Gaudreau, Tyler Johnson, Mats Zuccarello — those guys that have paved the pathway for a smaller guy like me,” said Yamamoto, who current plays for his hometown Spokane Chiefs.
Edmonton made its biggest move of the weekend just before arrival in Chicago with Jordan Eberle dealt (finally) to New York for Ryan Strome. The club later signed Kris Russell for four years and $ 16 million.
Top pick: D Timothy Liljegren — 17th overall
A Swedish defender who tries to play like Erik Karlsson and Drew Doughty, Liljegren was once thought to be a top 10, maybe even top five pick at the 2017 draft. Then he got mono, missed a couple months, and had his season derailed. Ice time was inconsistent and he struggled to get settled with one team.
One of four defencemen taken by the Leafs, Liljegren thought he needed one more year of development in Sweden.
“Especially after this season being so up and down,” he said. “One more year in Sweden and then I want to play in the NHL.”
The Leafs added two of the largest players in the draft: six-foot-six, 214-pound Finnish defender Eemeli Rasanen and six-foot-six, 211-pound Russian Fedor Gordeev.
Toronto also selected six-foot-three, 169-pound Prince Albert goaltender Ian Scott.

Maybe it’s Michele Romanow’s youthful exuberance about tech — or her bubbly demeanor — but the 31-year-old sometimes seems an easy target on the set of the Canadian reality-TV show Dragons’ Den. During Romanow’s primetime debut, the angel investor endured relentless ribbing by her costar judges for asking the founders of the Vancouver-based Daily Delivery service more questions after almost everyone else had dismissed their pitch. “We haven’t got time,” the eldest dragon, Jim Treliving, hissed at Romanow. “It’s a one-hour show, for Christ’s sake!”
But the prairie kid turned “tech titan” fired back at the “franchise king,” burning Treliving for misusing the word crowdfunding (“It’s crowdsourcing!”) and noting that mobile phones weren’t even around when the septuagenarian got started. Then Romanow closed the deal with Daily Delivery, whose CEO says it has since more than doubled its monthly orders and tripled its staff. “Everyone got their chair a bit differently,” Romanow says, her smartwatch and iPhone flashing away in a Toronto café. “Jim made his money in an old-school, franchise business model and, for me, I’m interested in companies where I can help and leverage technologies so they can go from two users to 200,000 users to two million users in a year.”
“Don’t call me sweetie!” My sister @jackieromanow says she’s making tshirts hahaha @cbcdragon#countdown#October7http://t.co/hgcezfXkf8
— Michele Romanow (@MicheleRomanow) October 6, 2015
Before this plucky new schooler became the youngest costar on Dragon’s Den in 2015, Romanow co-founded Buytopia, a daily deals site that gobbled up six rivals in 2013 alone and grew into one of Canada’s biggest players in this space. The company also spun off SnapSaves, a grocery-store coupon app Romanow co-founded and, less than a year later, was bought by Groupon for an undisclosed eight-figure deal. Ernst & Young has named her a finalist for entrepreneur of the year in Ontario, while Forbes mentioned her as the only Canuck among 20 female “Millennials on a Mission.” And next? Maybe this oft-tapped keynote speaker at corporate events and pitch competitions will follow the celebrity flight plan of Robert Herjavec and Kevin “Mr. Wonderful” O’Leary — former dragons who took off south of the 49th parallel to swim alongside Mark Cuban on ABC’s Shark Tank. “She’s been very successful [and] found a platform to hopefully inspire other women to follow in her footsteps as an entrepreneur, investor, adviser and mentor,” says Boris Wertz, the Vancouver-based investor behind Version One Ventures.
If Romanow breaks out as an investing star south of Saskatchewan, where she grew up the eldest of four kids, don’t be surprised to see the avid skier return to the Great White North. Clearbanc — a digital bank that last year named Romanow co-founder and the first of Y Combinator’s YC Fellowship companies to launch — started in San Francisco but has since relocated to Toronto. Romanow credits the “big recruiting advantage” among engineers and developers in Canada’s most populous town and from the neighboring cities of Kitchener and Waterloo — backyard to the once powerful BlackBerry, which shed many workers, but in the process seeded talent in promising new ventures. “Michele is a great example of a trend we’ve been seeing over the past few years in the Canadian startup ecosystem: successful repeat entrepreneurs with close ties to Silicon Valley who are choosing to start their new startups here in Canada,” says Stephen Lake, CEO and co-founder of Thalmic Labs, a Kitchener-based wearable-tech company.
Romanow knows the hustle-and-pivot dance, steps she picked up while chasing a civil engineering degree … and raising $ 100,000 to launch a sustainable, on-campus café.
Clearbanc provides financial services such as credit for an expanding pool of freelancers and nontraditionalists. Think pedal-pushers at Uber (where Romanow says “we closed a big deal”) and vacation-rental hosts like those on HomeAway or Airbnb, some of whom struggle to secure funds from Main Street banks but turn to Clearbanc to analyze their bookings data, predict future growth and offer moola in certain cases. While the company seems “very interesting,” Wertz says, he warns it risks being marginalized if Silicon Valley behemoths begin offering similar services themselves, “because if it’s an important service, they usually in-source it.” A larger incumbent could always copycat a startup, Romanow says, though she adds Clearbanc uses machine learning to improve its model over time. “I think we have a really unique data-driven approach,” she says.
Should the need arise, Romanow knows the hustle-and-pivot dance, steps she picked up while chasing a civil engineering degree at Queen’s University and raising $ 100,000 to launch a sustainable, on-campus café, The Tea Room, still serving students today. “I kind of thought I’d be better at building businesses than bridges,” she explains. While at Queen’s, where she also earned an MBA, Romanow met future business partners Anatoliy Melnichuk and Ryan Marien, who liked playing “What’s the next million-dollar idea?” The trio passed on producing biodegradable bottles, importing custom suits from China and growing exotic wood for pricey furniture and instead started a caviar business (which they closed following the 2008 U.S. stock market crash). They later reunited for Buytopia — raking in $ 10K at a trade show debut despite an unfinished website featuring a JPEG image of what it could look like — followed by SnapSaves. “We had found a rhythm,” says Romanow.
A rhythm whose beat started back west, amid farmers who woke up at dawn. Her Czechoslovakian immigrant mom learned English at 12, and her father didn’t have a bathroom at home until his teen years but became the CEO of a major oil and gas company. They may not have handed their daughter money to start in business, but Dad was essential in teaching Romanow about business early on through countless conversations and left her feeling like she had “some pretty big shoes to fill.” Clearbanc, should it succeed in its expansion in the U.S. while looking to offer financial services within Canada, could be the next giant step forward for this serial entrepreneur.
