Wadjet Eye Games’ ‘Unavowed’ Spins A Near-Perfect Urban Fantasy Yarn https://briefnews.eu/wadjet-eye-games-unavowed-spins-a-near-perfect-urban-fantasy-yarn/ https://briefnews.eu/wadjet-eye-games-unavowed-spins-a-near-perfect-urban-fantasy-yarn/#respond Mon, 13 Aug 2018 15:43:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wadjet-eye-games-unavowed-spins-a-near-perfect-urban-fantasy-yarn/ unavowed1.jpg
Dave Gilbert’s Blackwell games have been some of my favorite point & click adventures for years. Good stories, likeable protagonists, a distinct sense of place, and that trademark Wadjet Eye style had me anticipating each new episode like Christmas. I was certain that Gilbert’s games couldn’t get any better, that he had “found his voice” as a game developer, so to speak.

Well. I was wrong.

Unavowed switches the old amnesiac protagonist trope around. You know who you are – problem is that you’ve been possessed by a demon for the past year. And thanks to your “guest’s” murderous rampage across New York City, you’re now a wanted criminal. It’s a good thing, then, that your saviors, a group that calls itself the Unavowed, not only banish that demon, but also recruit you into their ranks to find out exactly what the demon wanted and why there have been so many supernatural occurrences lately.

This is urban fantasy in the vein of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files or the Hellblazer comics through and through, featuring all kinds of supernatural creatures in its short, episodic chapters. Each of those has you travelling to another part of NYC to uncover the source of, uh, something strange in the neighborhood. It is quite apparent that Dave Gilbert loves that city. Every locale feels distinct and more than just some backdrop. This is one of those games that make you want to seek out its places in the real world, so that you can compare them to their fictional counterparts.

Every episode, you’ll have to make a choice which of your fellow Unavowed to take with you. By the end of the game, there are four different party members, and the way to solve each problem depends heavily on your choice. Do you take the fire mage with you, or rather the acrobatic half-djinn who can tell truth from lies? Your choice affects the puzzles you’ll face, the dialogue options available to you, as well as the banter between your companions. I’ve played through the game once, but I am itching to replay it, just to see how things shape up when I take other people with me.

unavowed2.jpg

Compared to Unavowed, the Blackwell series feels positively quaint, like a master’s early work. Take, for instance, your way of interacting with the game world. In traditional adventure games, you click on something and your protagonist shares their thoughts on the matter. Unavowed saves you that click and lets you read a description of the item as soon as you mouse over it. Small change (which, it should be noted, Gilbert borrowed from Brotherhood Games’ Stasis), huge difference. The pacing of every scene subtly changes, letting you enjoy the story without clicky interruptions.

The game is polished to near-perfection, with Wadjet Eye Games regulars Ben Chandler and Thomas Regin reprising their roles as lead artist and composer, respectively. The saxophone-heavy soundtrack is a delight and the voice cast stellar. However, all of this wouldn’t mean a thing without good writing. Thankfully, Unavowed completely won me over with its characters, its pacing, and its plot, which resolved quite satisfyingly (and felt complete on its own while also leaving room for a sequel). I am gushing praise, but I cannot help it – the game really is that good.

You can purchase Unavowed from Wadjet Eye Games, GOG, and Steam. For more information, visit the game’s website or follow Dave Gilbert on Twitter.

TV Reboots: ‘Charmed,’ ‘Murphy Brown,’ and ‘Greatest American Hero’ All Get New, Modern Spins https://briefnews.eu/tv-reboots-charmed-murphy-brown-and-greatest-american-hero-all-get-new-modern-spins/ https://briefnews.eu/tv-reboots-charmed-murphy-brown-and-greatest-american-hero-all-get-new-modern-spins/#respond Mon, 29 Jan 2018 08:12:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tv-reboots-charmed-murphy-brown-and-greatest-american-hero-all-get-new-modern-spins/ tv reboots

No TV shows will ever die. They will be resuscitated by networks again and again, until they’re only empty husks of their former selves, all goodwill forgotten. But in the meanwhile, at least we get some feminist reboots of our favorite ’80s and ’90s shows!

Below, see some of the latest TV series to get a nostalgic reboot.

charmed

Charmed

On the heels of The CW’s sexy, shiny reboot of the primetime soap opera Dynasty, the teen-centric network is looking to bring back another beloved series. A drama pilot for a Charmed reboot based on a story by Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Urman has been ordered by The CW, according to Variety. Urman will executive produce while Jane the Virgin writers Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin are writing and executive producing.

The original series, which ran for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006 on The WB, starred Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, and Shannon Doherty — later Rose McGowan — as three hip San Fransisco urbanite sisters who discover they are witches. The cheesy, soapy drama was focused just as much on the sisters’ mission to save the world as it was about their daily lives and romances, with a dose of ’90s rah-rah feminism that may make some cringe today. The reboot was originally planned to be set in the ’70s, but will now be set in the present day with a new “feminist” storyline. The network describes the reboot as:

“This fierce, funny, feminist reboot of the original series centers on three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches. Between vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy, and maintaining familial bonds, a witch’s work is never done.”

murphy brown

Murphy Brown

CBS has given a 13-episode series order to a revival of Murphy Brown, according to Deadline. The new season of the 1988 sitcom will see the return of creator Diane English, as well as star Candice Bergen as the titular investigative journalist and TV anchor. English will write and executive produce the CBS revival through her Bend in the Road Productions banner, with Bergen also executive producing. The revival will come on the 30th anniversary of the original series, which aired on CBS for 10 seasons, garnering critical acclaim and 18 Emmy wins.

The show returns at a politically tumultuous time, something that the original series was familiar with. Murphy Brown was famous for its political satire and commentary, even weaving in current events into its storylines, like when Vice President Dan Quayle famously attacked the series in a speech during the 1992 presidential campaign — spurring the series to write its own response into the show.

greatest-american-hero

The Greatest American Hero

The Greatest American Hero is getting a female-led reboot on ABC, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The outlet reports that the new series will be a single-camera, half-hour comedy “that follows Meera, a 30-year-old Indian-American woman from Cleveland, Ohio, whose talents include drinking tequila, singing karaoke and not much else.” The pilot was penned by Fresh Off the Boat writer-producer Rachna Fruchbom, who executive produces alongside FOTB showrunner/creator Nahnatchka Khan and Tawnia McKiernan.

The original Greatest American Hero was an hour-long drama that aired for four seasons on ABC from 1981-83. It starred William Katt as Ralph, a mild-mannered teacher who suddenly finds himself in possession of a super suit granted to him by aliens, which leads him to take up a career of fighting crime. The series once even dabbled with a female version of the hero in a season 3 episode “The Greatest American Heroine,” where Ralph attempts to find a successor for his suit.

Black Mirror Trailer: Jodie Foster Spins a Frightful Tale of Parental Guidance https://briefnews.eu/black-mirror-trailer-jodie-foster-spins-a-frightful-tale-of-parental-guidance/ https://briefnews.eu/black-mirror-trailer-jodie-foster-spins-a-frightful-tale-of-parental-guidance/#respond Sat, 25 Nov 2017 17:18:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/black-mirror-trailer-jodie-foster-spins-a-frightful-tale-of-parental-guidance/

How far would you go to protect your child? That’s the million-dollar question in the latest trailer for Black Mirror Season 4, which highlights the Jodie Foster-directed episode “Arkangel.”

The clip features Rosemarie Dewitt (Mad Men) as an overprotective mother who goes to extreme lengths to keep her daughter safe after a momentary scare at a park. This involves enrolling her kid in some cryptic “trial period.” What that entails is unclear, but there’s a procedure involving a giant needle (yikes!).

If that’s not enough to make your skin crawl, the look on the toddler’s face after her mom comes across some particularly disturbing drawings should do the trick.

In addition to the trailer, Netflix has also revealed a poster for the episode, including the tagline “Mother will protect you” (as seen below).

Netflix has not yet disclosed a premiere date for Season 4. Back in September, the streamer released an initial teaser, disclosing all six upcoming episode titles (which you can watch here.)

Stevens spins into silver for Australia https://briefnews.eu/stevens-spins-into-silver-for-australia/ https://briefnews.eu/stevens-spins-into-silver-for-australia/#respond Sun, 13 Aug 2017 20:07:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stevens-spins-into-silver-for-australia/

Athletics: Sally Pearson wins gold in the women’s 100m hurdles in London

Dani Stevens smashed her personal best to win silver in the Women’s Discus final during day ten of the 16th IAAF World Athletics Championships.

EIGHT years ago she was a 21-year-old rising star named Dani Samuels who stunned the world to win the world title.

At this year’s London world championships she was Dani Stevens, the consistent veteran who produced a career best throw to claim a silver medal.

The reigning Commonwealth champion has had the most consistent season of her career and it paid off with her second world championships medal.

Stevens set a new Australian record with her final throw in the competition of 69.64m, surpassing Daniela Costian’s record of 68.72m which had stood since the 1994 Auckland Commonwealth Games.

Her previous best was 67.99m which she threw in Germany in 2014.

Unfortunately for Stevens, who married former shot putter Joe Stevens after the Rio Olympics where she finished fourth, she is up against one of the greatest throwers in history.

Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic has won the past two Olympic titles and with a throw of 70.31m she secured her second world title.

Fittingly, Steven’s good friend Sally Pearson, who is Australia’s only other medallist at the championships, was in the crowd to celebrate her roommate’s big moment.

A personal best in the men’s 20km walk still wasn’t enough for Dane Bird-Smith to repeat his medal winning effort from Rio last year.

The Brisbane walker finished sixth in a career best 1hr19.28sec but he was 35 seconds behind world champion Colombia’s Eider Arevalo.

Bird-Smith, who won the bronze medal at last year’s Olympic Games, cramped over the final stages of the race.

“Mixed emotions here,” he said. “It’s a massive PB, it’s my best placing at a world champs, it just wasn’t the race I was expecting to have.

“I just couldn’t find the rhythm. I was a target in that pack. First lap and these guys were there to cut me off and keep me out the water stations, that kind of stuff.

“It’s tactics in a race and I had to hold my own but it definitely breaks up the rhythm of the race and breaks up how you race in your own tempo.

“I can’t be disappointed with sixth in a PB but it wasn’t the race I wanted to race and I am a bit disappointed in that.

“I had a lot more to give and I could have raced it better on my own, but I was influenced by what the other guys were doing around the track.”

In women’s 20km event Regan Lamble was the first Australian home in 21st from Beki Smith (38th) and Claire Tallent (43rd).

Merriam-Webster is letting Kellyanne Conway know that there’s no such thing as “alternative facts.” All she has to do is read the definition of the word “fact” to realize this.

According to Merriam-Webster, there was a recent spike in searches for the word “fact” on its online dictionary. A short post on Merriam-Webster’s “Trend Watch” page explains that Kellyanne Conway, Donald Trump’s counselor and former campaign manager, is to blame for the sudden interest in the word.

“Lookups for ‘fact’ spiked after Kellyanne Conway described false statements as ‘alternative facts.’”

As the Washington Post reports, Kellyanne Conway coined the contradictory term during a testy exchange with Meet the Press host Chuck Todd. Todd asked Conway to explain why White House press secretary Sean Spicer spent his first press briefing angrily reading a short statement about the crowd size at Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony. Spicer made a series of erroneous claims about the number of people in attendance, and he also offered false explanations for why photos made it appear that Trump’s inauguration wasn’t as packed as Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration.

“Why put him out there for the very first time, in front of that podium, to utter a provable falsehood?” Todd asked. “It’s a small thing, but the first time he confronts the public, it’s a falsehood?”

Kellyanne Conway tried to avoid answering the question by attacking the media instead, but Chuck Todd steered the conversation back to Sean Spicer’s press briefing. Conway responded by telling Todd that he was overreacting to Spicer’s “alternative facts.”

“Don’t be so overly dramatic about it, Chuck. You’re saying it’s a falsehood, and they’re giving — Sean Spicer, our press secretary, gave alternative facts to that.”

Conway made another attempt to change the subject, but Todd wasn’t going to let her get away with trying to downplay Sean Spicer’s comments by coming up with a quirky new term to describe the Trump administration’s lies.

“Alternative facts are not facts; they’re falsehoods,” Todd pointed out.

Merriam-Webster also attempted to help Kellyanne Conway understand that alternative facts can’t exist by defining the word “fact” for her. According to the dictionary, a fact is “a piece of information presented as having objective reality.” Conway can’t reject reality and substitute her own.

If Kellyanne doesn’t want to call Sean Spicer’s comments “lies” or “falsehoods,” she may want to check out Merriam-Webster’s list of synonyms for the words. She could go with “fabrications,” “prevarications,” “whoppers,” or “taradiddles.”

Politico opted to label Sean Spicer’s comments about Donald Trump’s inauguration numbers “untruths,” and the political website reports that he “told at least 5 untruths in 5 minutes.” One of Spicer’s biggest false assertions was that Trump can boast having “the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration — period — both in person and around the globe.”

According to Politifact, the estimated crowd size for Donald Trump’s inauguration was 250,000 to 600,000 people. An estimated 1.8 million people attended Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration, and around 1 million supporters packed the National Mall to watch him be sworn in for the second time. Trump’s TV ratings were also topped by inaugurations of Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, and Richard Nixon.

Sean Spicer’s falsehoods alarmed some members of the media.

“For months now, we’ve been wondering what covering a Trump White House might be like,” CNN’s Brian Stelter said Sunday on Reliable Sources. “I think (now) we’re wondering something else. Is this what every day is going to be like?”

Stelter could have used Merriam-Webster’s word of the year for 2016 to describe the situation: surreal.

Another situation that may seem surreal to some? Merriam-Webster trolling America’s future POTUS by trying to help Twitter users decipher one of his tweets. According to the Huffington Post, former presidential candidate Marco Rubio was the target of the February 26, 2016 Trump tweet in question. The POTUS wrote that Rubio was a “Leightweight chocker [sic]” and that it was a “Great honer! [sic]” that many polls had declared him the winner of a debate.

Merriam-Webster is clearly on a quest to make America’s grasp of the English language great again.
