Toepick! Now that we’ve got your attention, let’s talk about Netflix’s new figure skating drama Spinning Out, which makes The Cutting Edge look like a quaint children’s story. Set in the resort town of Sun Valley, Idaho, the series stars Kaya Scodelario (Skins, the Maze Runner movies) as Kat Baker, a talented 21-year-old skater whose promising future has been halted by an injury. Kat fell during a jump in competition and hit her head on the ice, splitting it open. The trauma of it has paralyzed her to the point where she keeps popping a simple jump. As a result, she fails her seniors test to become a coach, which means she has to give up skating completely. Kat is so upset that she rushes into the ladies’ changing room and bites her own arm until she draws blood. But there’s another prospect out there for Kat: Justin (Arrow‘s Evan Roderick), the rich, playboy pairs skater whose father (JAG‘s David James Elliott) owns the hotel where Kat works as a waitress with pal Marcus (All American‘s Mitchell Edwards). Justin’s in need of a new partner, and his coach Dasha (The Americans‘ Svetlana Efremova) has her eye on Kat. She recognizes what a beautiful skater Kat is and believes that she can fix her issues on the ice. Dasha asks Kat to give her two years, and in return, she will give Kat nationals. But even though Kat “wanted to be remembered” in the sport, she tells Dasha that she’s not a pairs skater. “We’re the same,” Carol says to Kat. “Always tripping at the finish line.” Kat exclaims that she’ll never be like Carol, because she’ll never be a terrible mother who can’t hold down a job and only picks losers. Carol counters that Kat can’t stand to let Serena have a turn in the spotlight. It’s all very nasty and ends with Kat packing up her stuff and throwing her skates out the car window. In the morning, however, she has a change of heart and drives back to dig her skates out of the snow. But does she still have a chance at teaming up with Justin? As the episode ends, he discovers that the girl he flirted with the previous night is his new partner Leah (Shadowhunters‘ Kaitlyn Leeb). I wish I could tell you that the show/Baker family drama becomes less melodramatic as the season progresses, but on the bright side, Justin becomes a far more interesting character than the premiere would lead you to believe he is. And his coach Dasha and stepmother Mandy (Parks and Recreation‘s Sarah Wright Olsen) have some lovely storylines. What did you think of the debut of Spinning Out? Things aren’t much easier at home with Kat’s snotty half-sister Serena (The Hunger Games‘ Willow Shields), who is a promising soon-to-be seniors skater, and the girls’ bipolar mom Carol (Mad Men‘s January Jones). One minute, Serena is calling Kat for help after Carol goes off her meds and has an episode, and the next, she’s telling Kat that she’s just as messed up and bipolar as Carol. An upset Kat claims that she manages her illness, but the argument is enough to convince her that she should move to London with her college boyfriend.
Jenn (Amanda Zhou), a fellow skater nursing a possibly career-ending hip injury, takes her BFF Kat out to a swanky club to get their minds off their crummy days. She, too, urges Kat not to give up on her talent and pass up an opportunity. Outside the club, Justin — who paid for the bottle service so that Jenn would talk to Kat — runs into his would-be partner. He tells her that, despite what everyone thinks, he really does care about skating and thinks they would work well together. Kat is having none of it and goes home, only to be met with an upset Carol. Word got back to her that Kat threatened Serena’s fancy new coach Mitch (Reign‘s Will Kemp) at the club. Kat explains that she doesn’t trust the way Mitch acts around Serena, which leads to a blowout fight.

The original Surface Studio was one of the strangest, most eye-catching, and enjoyable-to-look-at machines we’ve used: a giant 28-inch touchscreen with a computer in its base. Today, Microsoft announced Surface Studio 2: the same concept, an even more beautiful screen, and a healthy improvement to the computer specs.
The first-generation Surface Studio has a 4500×3000 28-inch display. The new one retains those specs, but with big improvements to brightness (38 percent increased) and contrast (22 percent increased). To do this, Microsoft has changed the way it makes the screen by using technology first found in the mobile Surface devices. The new screen has smaller transistors controlling each pixel, meaning that more light can pass through; the new pixels also block more light when turned off. The result is that the best-looking screen in computing now looks even better. It’s a rich, luscious display that will ruin you for every other screen you look at.
Driving the screen is either an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB of dedicated GDDR5 or a GTX 1070 with 8GB. This is a substantial upgrade to GTX 965M or 980M found in the first generation, with Microsoft claiming them to be 50 percent faster. Microsoft is continuing to use mobile parts in the Surface Studio, so in a sense these are “current-generation” chips; while Nvidia’s desktop RTX 2080s have just hit the market their corresponding mobile chips aren’t out yet.

Narcissists tend to be incapable of something called “object constancy.” This means they struggle to have positive feelings at the same time as negative ones.
For example, once they are fired up for a fight, they can be incredibly cruel, because all they can comprehend in the moment are feelings of resentment and anger.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Time for a good old-fashioned trailer round-up! We’ve compiled several recent trailers together in one convenient place, because we care about you. Below you’ll see new trailers for Netflix’s new anime B: The Beginning, the sci-fi thriller The Titan, Sophie Turner in Josie, Pierce Brosnan and Guy Pearce in Spinning Man, and the indie film Outside In.
I am not an anime fan. I’m not saying I dislike anime, I’m just saying I never got into it. But anime has a big following, and Netflix wants in on it. Their new anime B: The Beginning comes from co-director Kazuto Nakazawa, who created the anime sequence in Kill Bill Vol. 1. The show comes from Production I.G., who were also behind the Ghost in the Shell series. B: The Beginning premieres March 3, 2018 on Netflix.
In a world powered by advanced technology, crime and action unfold in the archipelagic nation of Cremona. Koku, the protagonist. Keith, the legendary investigator of the royal police force RIS. A mysterious criminal organization. A wide variety of characters race through the fortified city as it is beset by the serial killer, Killer B, and a chain of crimes in this suspense drama by director Kazuto Nakazawa and Production I.G.
What the hell is this? I don’t know, but it looks kind of incredible. Sam Worthington, of Avatar fame, is back on his bullshit again, turning himself over to government experiments that give him a whole new body. There’s a shot in here where Worthington is in a pool and then starts swimming like a dolphin. It’s wild, y’all. The Titan also stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Taylor Schilling and Tom Wilkinson. Look for it on April 13, 2018.
In the near future, a military family is relocated so it can participate in a groundbreaking experiment of man’s genetic evolution into space.
Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner adopts a shaky Southern accent and gets covered in tattoos in Josie. Turner’s character comes storming into a small town, and catches the eye of older man Dylan McDermott. Things get intense. Jack Kilmer, Daeg Faerch, Kurt Fuller, Robin Bartlett, Lombardo Boyar, and George Todd McLachlan also star. Josie opens March 16, 2018.
Everyone knows everyone in Huntsville. So when tattooed, sweet-talking Josie (Sophie Turner) struts into town, heads turn. Striking up relationships with young punk Gator and loner Hank (Dylan McDermott), she quickly becomes a hot topic of local gossip. But her true intentions for showing up in this small, southern community are far more sinister as her dark past comes to light.
Spinning Man is a bad title for a movie, but here we are. This murder mystery has Detective Pierce Brosnan investigating college professor Guy Pearce after a student goes missing. Pearce becomes the prime suspect, and things get intense. Then Clark Gregg shows up! Minnie Driver also stars in the film, and it actually looks pretty good despite its truly dreadful title. Spinning Man opens April 6, 2018.
Evan Birch (Guy Pearce) is a family man and esteemed professor at a distinguished college, where his charm and reputation have made his philosophy class very popular. When a female student named Joyce goes missing, Evan’s previous off-campus dalliances make his wife (Minnie Driver) question his alibi. Gruff police Detective Malloy (Pierce Brosnan) has even more reason to be suspicious when crucial evidence makes Evan the prime suspect in Joyce’s disappearance. Suddenly, the questions Evan faces aren’t merely academic – they’re a matter of life or death.
Outside In
Edie Falco, Jay Duplass, Kaitlyn Dever, and Ben Schwartz star in the indie drama Outside In. Duplass plays an ex-con who gets out of jail and finds himself bonding with his former teacher, played by Falco. Outside In probably won’t be a blockbuster, but it looks genuinely well-made and emotional. I will be seeing it for sure. Outside In opens March 30, 2018.
An ex-con adjusting to modern life forms an intense bond with his former teacher, who herself is struggling to connect with her daughter.

The viral video shows drone footage of a huge spinning ice disc spotted in the Liao River in China.
People can be seen jumping onto it as it slowly spins around by itself.
Even with as many as a dozen people, the disc continues to move with kids and animals also jumping on to it.
But what has caused it? Experts weigh in on the theory behind the mysterious circle.
Many experts hypothesised that the chunk of ice slowly carved itself into a circle whilst spinning.
In 1997, a paper in the Royal Meteorological Society theorised this was caused by a whirlpool freezing.
This has since been debunked by experts who have revealed what has caused the phenomenon.
A team of physicists from the University of Liege in Belgium analysed the theory in the journal Physical Review E.
They explained that it is due to the temperature of the water. As it rises, the water becomes denser.
The water around the disc then melts, which twists and creates a rising vortex.
The ice then spins and grinds itself into forming a circle, with the actions similar to how a plughole works.
The mysterious spinning ice occurs in other destinations such as the Arctic, Scandinavia and Canada.
They are often much smaller, without being able to have people on top but can grow up to 17m.
A similar one was spotted last year in northeastern Inner Mongolia, which was found in a frozen river in Hulun Buir City in November.
The much smaller disc, measuring four metres, went viral after a man film himself spinning on it.
According to National Geographic, one was also found in central Russia, near Omsk Oblast last August.

More often than not, you’re likely to find David Solomon at Goldman Sachs’ headquarters in Tribeca, helping run the most prestigious white-collar investment bank on Wall Street, where the COO has been a partner since 1999.
But you might also spy him at The Whales, an Asian-fusion night spot on New York’s bustling Lower East Side, donning a T-shirt and a white pair of headphones.
Or, Beautique in Midtown — dubbed a “millionaire playpen” by the New York Post.
But Solomon isn’t so much playing with fellow millionaires as he is playing for them — and countless others as well.
The investment banking stalwart has of late been moonlighting as a DJ on the Electronic Dance Music scene, sharing the stage with stars like Paul Oakenfold and, last month, even spinning vinyl at Willow Studios in Los Angeles for the Electronic Music Awards.

It’s an unorthodox hobby for a high-powered finance exec, a breed that more commonly spends its free time hitting the golf links, curating art, cavorting at charity galas, or jetting off to tony weekend homes in the Hamptons or Martha’s Vineyard.
But Solomon has been an audiophile his whole life, as he recently explained in an episode of the podcast “Exchanges at Goldman Sachs.”
“I always loved music,” Solomon said. “I was a very analog guy, when I was in college, I must have had over 1,000 LPs, vinyl albums.”
A lot has changed since Solomon’s college days in the early 1980s. The digitization of music over the past 15 years has facilitated easy access to artists and genres that might previously have remained muted or cordoned off to outsiders.
“I think this year I just saw a statistic that 63 percent of all music is being consumed in a streaming form now,” Solomon said. “The ability to kind of curate, study, listen to, try different things, expand your horizons, it just went up exponentially. “
That’s how you get a guy like Solomon, age 55 and ensconced in the world of high finance, manning the turntables at beach parties in the Bahamas overrun with bikini-clad millennials.

He appears to have been reeled in as much by the business angle and the platforms commanded by top DJs as the sound itself.
Here’s Solomon:
“And so as that happened I started getting more and more interested in different kinds of music. Music I really didn’t have a lot of experience with. And five, seven years ago, I started really kind of taking note of club and EDM music and what was happening with all the electronic music, and I said: This is really interesting. Big business. And started looking at it, and I said: You know, I like some of this music. And started playing around with it, started reading about these DJs that really had these incredible platforms, and I said: You know what? This looks interesting. And kind of stumbled into it as a hobby, and now I just do it for fun.”
He indulges his side hobby about once a month.
The Wall Street veteran says finding and exploring a passion is crucial to longevity in a career known for grinding people down and burning them out.
“If you can’t find a way to have passions and pursue those passions and mix them into your professional life and your personal life in some way, shape or form, it’s just harder to have the energy to keep on doing this, and to keep moving forward professionally,” Solomon said.

The cost of a beer at a Toronto Blue Jays game is among the highest in baseball. Take a 473-millilitre “tall” can that would retail for anywhere between $ 2.50 and $ 3.50 at your local Beer Store. The same beer at a Blue Jays game will cost you upward of $ 12, depending on the brand you choose. If you do the math, that represents about a 400 per cent markup from the retail price.
That kind of markup is common for concessions at sports stadiums and arenas. We all know a bag of peanuts is no bargain at $ 6 or $ 7. You don’t need to be a shrewd consumer to know that you could buy many hot dogs at the supermarket for the cost of a single one at a game.
So why do fans fork over hundreds of millions of dollars every year for overpriced concessions?
And how do teams find a sweet spot, where the inflated price they are charging is still palatable to their fans?
Put another way, how did the Blue Jays decide fans would pay more than $ 12 for a beer?
Scott Francis helps teams make these kinds of decisions. He’s a consultant at Florida-based Strategic Pricing Solutions.
“People in [a pro team’s] front office have theories about how far is too far, but they really don’t know until they introduce those prices and find out,” he says. “So teams will monitor a price over the course of a season, see how the sales go, and if they find they are selling as many or more than before, they may hike it again, typically a small increase like 50 cents or a dollar, always gauging what the reaction is.”
The Blue Jays declined to provide information on how they settled on their beer prices.
Vijay Setlur, a sports marketing instructor at York University’s Schulich School of Business, says consumers have grown accustomed to paying more for concessions in certain settings.
“If these kinds of prices were only in sports stadiums, it would really raise people’s ire, but they see it elsewhere, at concerts, at movies theatres.”
For some fans, a beer is such an integral part of enjoying a baseball game that the inflated cost is justified.
‘That’ll be $ 13, please.’ (Rob Carr/Getty Images)
“They know it’s a substantially higher price than they would pay in a liquor store or a grocery store,” Francis says. “The bigger thing is that they are at this venue for the experience of seeing the game, and a part of that experience is enjoying something to drink.”
That doesn’t mean fans will simply pay anything. Teams need to temper exorbitant concession prices by offering fans options.
In Toronto, fans are allowed to bring in food and water. For years, this wasn’t the case, and if fans wanted to eat they had to purchase their food inside the stadium. Today in Toronto, nobody is being forced to buy anything other than alcohol, Setlur points out.
“That’s why you haven’t seen that consumer backlash. As long as fans know they have a choice, they are fine.”
Still, in survey after survey, high concession prices top the list of fan grievances.
One NFL team is responding in a way that makes it unique on the modern sports landscape. In its new stadium, slated to open this season, the Atlanta Falcons will offer fans what they are calling “fan first” pricing. Hot dogs, pop and water will each cost $ 2. A 355-millilitre beer is $ 5. Fries and nachos are $ 3.
“We took the traditional food and beverage model and threw it out of the window,” Falcons owner Arthur Blank told reporters. “And I think what you will see is variety and value and pricing that will make it easy for a family of two or four or six to come to the stadium and have a great day and actually be able to eat here. And not have to plan to eat before or after because everything is so expensive.”
Sure, it’s likely the Falcons will make up for the lost revenue elsewhere, possibly through increases to parking, tickets or merchandise, but the approach is refreshing.
Just don’t expect an avalanche of teams to follow. For many, the concessions cash cow is simply too dependable a revenue stream to be tinkered with.
Instead, Setlur says, teams like the Blue Jays will continue to push and probe the limits of what fans will pay for food and drink.
“The breaking point is if a boycott begins, and that I don’t see happening any time soon,” Setlur says. “If there was a mass protest of beer prices, then they would know they have hit the ceiling.
“But at this point they could probably raise it even higher to test what that threshold is.”
