German Formula 3 driver Sophia Floersch reportedly suffered a broken spine in a horrific, high-speed crash at the Macau Grand Prix on Sunday.

In the video below, the 17-year-old is seen losing control of her Van Amersfoort Racing car in the Chinese territory and flying over her competitors before slamming into the track fence.

Initial reports stated Floersch was conscious and her vital signs were stable.

She later took to Twitter and thanked everyone for their support.

Japanese driver Sho Tsuboi was also involved in the crash and taken to hospital with pain in his lower back. Also injured were photographers Minami Hiroyuki  and Chan Weng Wang, who are said to be dealing with a concussion and lacerated liver, respectively, while race marshal Chan Cha is believed to have cuts and a broken bone in his face.

Floersch reportedly lost control in contact down a straightaway as she sped towards the right hand corner, launched off a curb, bounced off Tsuboi's car and sailed like a missile into the safety netting.

Floersch's then smashed into a photographers bunker and landed on its wheels. The race, delayed for over one hour to repair the barrier and tend to the injured, was eventually won by 19-year-old Dan Ticktum of London.

The most common cause of lower back pain is due to mechanical issues – the way the body moves – said nutritionist Dr Josh Axe.

Mechanical back pain could be treated through lower back exercises, he said.

Rehabilitative exercises, stretching and strengthening can drastically reduce the presence of lower back pain.

It’s important to build up slowly to lower back exercises, he said. Be mindful of any pain you experience, and never work through pain.

But, this exercise could help to relieve the condition.

“Almost any exercises can train your core and lower back muscles,” said Axe.

“The key is to perform each exercise with good posture and a tight core to reinforce good habits and increase the effectiveness of each movement.”

The Arch Hold exercise could help to reduce back pain.

Begin by lying flat on the floor, on your belly.

Stretch out your legs, and extend your arms overhead.

Lift your legs and chest slowly, to create a banana shape with your body.

While keeping in the same position, extend your biceps out to your ears.

“Squeeze your butt to create strength and tension along the back body,” said Axe.

“Hold this position for 30 seconds, rest and then repeat two to three more times.”

Back pain is very common, and improves within a few weeks or months, said the NHS.

In most cases, the pain isn’t anything to worry about, and isn’t caused by anything serious.

To reduce back pain, take anti-inflammatory painkillers.

Hot or cold compresses could relieve pain in the short-term. A hot water bottle or bag of frozen peas could provide similar relief.

Back pain: Best sleeping positions to prevent a painful spine https://briefnews.eu/back-pain-best-sleeping-positions-to-prevent-a-painful-spine-2/ https://briefnews.eu/back-pain-best-sleeping-positions-to-prevent-a-painful-spine-2/#respond Sat, 02 Dec 2017 05:37:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/back-pain-best-sleeping-positions-to-prevent-a-painful-spine-2/

Sleep is vital to maintaining good health, but not at the detriment of our backs, said the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).

Sleeping in awkward positions could put immense strain on the neck or back, resulting in pain when waking up.

Avoid sleeping on your stomach, the society advised. If it’s your default position, try sleeping without a pillow under your head, or put one under your lower abdomen, it added.

Back sleepers should put a pillow beneath their knees, to maintain the natural curvature of the lower back, it said.

The CSP’s spokesperson, and UPRIGHT GO expert, Sammy Margo, said: “Sleep is an important contributor to good health so it’s vital to get a good night’s rest.

“A mattress that’s more than eight years old will have deteriorated by 75 per cent and may cause you to have bad posture while you sleep, so if that’s the case I’d consider investing in a new one.

“If you sleep on your side, draw your legs up slightly toward your chest and place a pillow between your legs.

“Ensure that your neck is supported in the midline position.”

Back pain could be caused by everyday activities. We may not realise that some things are damaging our posture, including carrying a heavy handbag, or sitting in the car for too long, said Margo.

Another reason for bad back pain could be caused by slouching over a computer screen.

Leaning forward by just 30 degrees to get closer to the screen puts three to four times more pressure on the back, Margo added.

The body gets 30 per cent less oxygen when slouching, too.

It’s not always possible to identify what’s causing back pain, but altering your positioning could help to reduce pain.

In very rare cases, there may be something more serious or underlying that requires medical advice.

Contact a doctor if you find it difficult to pass urine, or have impaired sexual function, while also suffering from back pain.

Numbness or tingling in your genitals, loss of bladder control, or loss of power in the legs are also signs you should contact a GP, the CSP said.

‘Does he order his spine on Amazon Prime?’: Stephen Colbert torches Trump during Anthony Scaramucci interview https://briefnews.eu/does-he-order-his-spine-on-amazon-prime-stephen-colbert-torches-trump-during-anthony-scaramucci-interview/ https://briefnews.eu/does-he-order-his-spine-on-amazon-prime-stephen-colbert-torches-trump-during-anthony-scaramucci-interview/#respond Tue, 15 Aug 2017 05:56:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/does-he-order-his-spine-on-amazon-prime-stephen-colbert-torches-trump-during-anthony-scaramucci-interview/ Screen Shot 2017 08 14 at 9.59.16 PM@colbertlateshow/Twitter

In an interview with former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci, “The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert delivered a line on President Donald Trump that impressed Scaramucci himself.

Colbert initially pressed Scaramucci on why Trump failed to unequivocally condemn the white supremacist groups that were connected to the deadly rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday. Trump initially blamed “many sides” for the violence, only to reverse course two days later after a massive bipartisan outcry.

“Let’s be fair to him today though,” Scaramucci said. “He did condemn the Nazis today.”

“Two days later,” Colbert exclaimed. “Does he order his spine on Amazon Prime? Why did it take so long for that?”

“That’s a good line,” Scaramucci said, amid applause from the audience. “And I said yesterday that he should’ve been tougher on it.”

“I said yesterday, and I maintain that he’s got to be tougher on that stuff if he wants his legislative agenda to pass,” Scaramucci said. “He’s got to move in a more moderate direction, he’s got to appeal to people that are independent and moderates that possibly voted for him to help him ascend to the presidency.”

Scaramucci appeared on “The Late Show” Monday night and discussed some of the inner workings of the White House that he experienced during his 10-day tenure in the Trump administration, including his public rift with Trump’s then-chief of staff, Reince Priebus.

The origins of the human spine might have just been found in a 3.3-million-year-old fossil https://briefnews.eu/the-origins-of-the-human-spine-might-have-just-been-found-in-a-3-3-million-year-old-fossil/ https://briefnews.eu/the-origins-of-the-human-spine-might-have-just-been-found-in-a-3-3-million-year-old-fossil/#respond Tue, 23 May 2017 14:36:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-origins-of-the-human-spine-might-have-just-been-found-in-a-3-3-million-year-old-fossil/ vertebrae of the Selam skeleton.Zeresenay Alemseged/University of Chicago

Recent analysis of a 3.3-million-year-old hominin fossil found back in 2000 has provided researchers with the most complete spinal column of any early human relative — and gives us a unique snapshot of a crucial transition point as our early ancestors evolved towards bipedalism.

According to the results of the analysis, key segments of the spinal structure that allowed us humans to walk upright emerged millions of years earlier than we thought, and it sheds new light on one of the “hallmarks” of human evolution.

The bones in question — called Selam — were discovered in Dikika, Ethiopia, by University of Chicago paleoanthropologist Zeresenay Alemseged on a research expedition.

Alemseged has studied these ancient remains ever since, which are notable not only for their completeness, but for Selam’s age of death — she was just 2.5 years old, making her the earliest and most complete juvenile human ancestor ever discovered.

And now, new research has identified these bones as the oldest evidence of when early humans began to walk on two feet.

“Continued and painstaking research on Selam shows that the general structure of the human spinal column emerged over 3.3 million years ago, shedding light on one of the hallmarks of human evolution,” says Alemseged.

“This type of preservation is unprecedented, particularly in a young individual whose vertebrae are not yet fully fused.”

Selam is a member of Australopithecus afarensis — the same early hominin species as Lucy, the famous fossil discovered in the 1970s.

In fact, Selam (which means “peace” in the Amharic language of Ethiopia) has often been nicknamed ‘Lucy’s baby’, although dating of the fossils suggests that Selam predates her ‘mother’ by some 120,000 years.

Since discovering Selam in 2000, Alemseged’s team has analysed the ancient bones, chipping away at the sandstone surrounding the skeleton, and for the latest study, using imaging technology at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in France to visualise missing parts of the bone structure.

“This technology provides the opportunity to virtually examine aspects of the vertebrae otherwise unattainable from the original specimen,” says one of the team, evolutionary anatomist Fred Spoor from University College London.

In doing so, the researchers found that Selam’s spinal structure occupies something of a halfway point between living humans and other ancient predecessors.

Like us, Selam had only 12 thoracic vertebrae and 12 pairs of ribs, whereas most apes have more of these. In contrast, humans have more vertebrae in the lower back, which help us to stand and walk upright.

But Selam’s spinal structure also exhibits a thoracic-to-lumbar joint transition that other early human ancestors had — the first time researchers have seen this in conjunction with the same vertebrae count of modern humans.

“For many years we have known of fragmentary remains of early fossil species that suggest that the shift from rib-bearing, or thoracic, vertebrae to lumbar, or lower back, vertebrae was positioned higher in the spinal column than in living humans,” says one of the team, Carol Ward from the University of Missouri.

“But we have not been able to determine how many vertebrae our early ancestors had. Selam has provided us the first glimpse into how our early ancestors’ spines were organised.”

Calling Selam’s spine an “unusual early human configuration”, the team says it’s an important piece of evidence that helps further explain how early primates developed towards the upright walking ability we all enjoy today.

“We are documenting for the first time in the fossil record the emergence of the number of the vertebrae in our history, when the transition happened from the rib-bearing vertebrae to lower back vertebrae, and when we started to extend the waist,” says Alemseged.

“This structure and its modification through time is one of the key events in the history of human evolution.”

The findings are reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
