Some say experience is the best teacher, and for Hugh Herr, that has definitely been the case. His experience with disability and subsequent need for prosthetics compelled him to develop what could be the world’s most advanced type of bionics.

Now, the researcher and bionics expert is the co-director of the Center for Extreme Bionics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) — a unique research lab that began with the idea of taking prosthetics to the next level.

Since its creation in 2014, the center’s goal has been to treat a wide spectrum of disabilities through the development of advanced bionics. Now, the center is working on a $ 100 million, five-year project that focuses on treating paralysis, depression, amputation, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s disease through the development of bionic technologies.

Disability-free world

The projects the researchers are pursuing are nothing short of cutting-edge.

While today’s prosthetics are useful and can give amputees a way to regain lost motor functions, Herr and his colleagues think they can improve upon these devices by combining them with advanced neural implants. This gives a person’s nerves and muscles a way to talk to a prosthetic, making it easier for the device to be controlled and function like a biological limb.

The MIT team sees neural implants being useful for far more prosthetics, though. The technology could also be used to alter brain functions to treat neurological or mental disorders.

Meanwhile, a digital nervous system (DNS) powered by optogenetics — a technique that uses light to control cells — could allow the researchers to treat paralysis and Parkinson’s disease by essentially replacing the biological nervous system. Eventually, the researchers think they many be able to engineer cells and tissues to grow organs that can repair or replace biological structures.

The World Health Organization estimates 40 to 80 cases of paralysis per million people, and that’s just one of the conditions being focused on at the Center for Extreme Bionics. If the center’s researchers are able to find ways to use technology to help all of those people, Herr’s dream of a world in which disability is no more may just come to fruition.

The British No.1 and sixth seed for the Championships, which start on Monday, will wait another 24 hours before making her decision after dramatically quitting the Aegon International at Eastbourne.

Konta was hurt after slipping and landing heavily on her shoulders and head on the grass court at match point in her quarter-final win over world No.1 Angelique Kerber on Thursday.

She needed 10 minutes of attention, wept tears of frustration and later complained that she was suffering from a sore head, but a medical check later showed she had suffered no concussion.

She said: “I didn’t sleep very well that night and now my back is sore and I must rest. I’m not thinking about anything other than the next 24 hours. I made my decision to withdraw regardless of what championship is coming up next. My health is important above anything else.”

Konta will need rest, ice treatment and elevation for what is basically a whiplash injury, normally treatable by an osteopath. But medical experts claim that she must ensure the back joints remain flexible and not stiffen up.

It seemed at the time that Konta had made a remarkable recovery; at one stage a stretcher was called for and a neckbrace.

However, she managed to play on and win and appeared to have suffered no long-term damage to her back or her head.

But overnight fresh problems arose and she said: “I felt it wasn’t quite right to play my semi-final against Karolina Pliskova. My priority is to look after myself, make sure I’m in a good place physically and health wise. It’s definitely not an ideal situation but I’m just making sure I recover.

“Our seasons are very long and I’d like to think I still have many years left in my career. So I must put myself first.”

Konta lost to the Czech at the same stage of the Championship last year. But now the pressure of being an outsider for the women’s singles crown at Wimbledon has been removed, with her odds lengthened from 9 to 14-1.

She said: “I can move my neck but the important thing is to rest as much as I can. So I’ve gone back to my house here, to just make sure I recover in the best possible way.”

And there was disappointment too for British No.3 Heather Watson, ranked 125 in the world and giving everything in her challenge to build another comeback.

This week she has put paid to the world No.9, 17 and 23 but said: “I’m feeling great about my game and I’m feeling ready for Wimbledon. I’ve had lots of court time but I paid for making a sluggish start and I was slow, felt heavy after the long day on Thursday and made too many mistakes.”

After splitting sets with Caroline Wozniaki, she broke the Danish former world No.1 to lead 2-l in the decider.

Then Watson was broken back to love double faulting twice and finally went out 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. “Disappointing,” she said. “But my body feels good and I’m up for it.”

Professionals have already started using its augmented reality tech to help out, from building engineers donning it to visualize structural blueprints or Duke surgeons testing it during brain operations. Those were preliminary applications, but augmented reality software company Scopis has released a platform for HoloLens specifically to aid in spinal surgeries.

The Holographic Navigation Platform, as Scopis calls it, projects a mixed-reality overlay on the patient through the HoloLens during a surgical procedure. Surgeons can use it to track pedicle screws and use gestures to adjust virtual displays like a customizable HUD, keeping important numbers in their field-of-view.

Obviously, improving accuracy with Scopis’ 3D-positioning tech would likely reduce surgery time and invasive depth. But using visual overlay technology would also cut down on the radiation exposure that comes with the current spine-envisioning method of fluoroscopy. As we noted in the Duke tests, wearing the wireless HoloLens headset is far less cumbersome than prior mixed reality setups. But a private company betting on Microsoft’s AR system is another step toward integrating the tech into professional use.
