Let’s get to it:

ON NETFLIX

Triple Frontier: This Netflix original from director J.C. Chandor (Margin Call, A Most Violent Year) is a slick, muscular piece of work that merges the military interests of original writer Mark Boal (it was originally a project for his frequent collaborator Kathryn Bigelow) with Chandor’s fasciation with the interpersonal dynamics of corruption. Freely fusing elements of Three Kings, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and The Wages of Fear, Chandor follows a team of guns-for-hire on an off-the-books mission to rob a Colombian drug kingpin. Performances vary (I wish casting directors would just accept that Charlie Hunnam is never going to nail the American dialect), but Oscar Isaac and Ben Affleck bring the necessary haggard gravitas.

ON HULU

The Party’s Just Beginning: Karen Gillan stars, writes, and directs (it’s her feature debut on the latter two fronts), but this isn’t some actor’s vanity project; it heralds the arrival of a major filmmaker, with a genuine voice and a striking style. She stars as Lucy, an aimless young Scottish woman whose days and nights are a blur of monotony, yet becomes keenly aware of how her town’s overwhelming ennui is manifesting itself in inescapable suicides. It’s a refreshingly unpredictable movie — it really could go anywhere at any time, thanks not only to the wildness of her direction, but the cleverness of its cross-cutting — and Gillan’s insightful script finds the humor in some deeply dark material. And then, on top of all that, she crafts a tremendous performance, haunting yet present, dryly funny but casually tragic. There’s a real power to the filmmaking here; Gillan is, clearly, a force to be reckoned with.

ON HBO GO

The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley: A few years back, medical “disrupter” Elizabeth Holmes was showing up on magazine covers and at presidential forums, and her company Theranos was valued at nearly $ 10 billion. “Four years later, it was worth less than zero,” intones director/narrator Alex Gibney, whose documentary is a post-mortem of a fraud, conducted with surgical precision. He dives deep into the specifics of this company and its CEO/founder, detailing how she fooled investors and influencers, the jaw-dropping secrecy and paranoia that kept the ruse going, and breathtaking speed with which the entire house of cards collapsed. Gibney lays it all out with his usual investigative acumen, but doesn’t stop there; this is also a sly indictment of how big tech is reported on — and often valorized. And that problem isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse: No one on this earth was less convinced that we needed more damn Spider-Man movies (and this is not an exaggeration; I’ve said as much, in those words), and it took this animated knockout about 10 minutes to turn me around. The easiest explanation is found in the credits; though the directors are Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, Rothman’s co-writer on the script is Phil Lord of The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street — movies borne of bad ideas that knew they were borne of bad ideas, acknowledged that fact, and triumphed anyway. Spider-Verse is of that same ilk, cheerfully aware of the done-to-death nature of the Spidey story, and determined to not only find a new angle, but work on its own terms. Delightful from end to end, particularly as a reminder of the considerable comic gifts of Jake Johnson and John Mulaney. (Includes audio commentary, featurettes, lyric videos, and Spider-Ham mini-movie.)

ON BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD

On Her Shoulders: In August 2014, ISIS descended up on the Sinjar region of Iraq and commenced a gruesome massacre of the Yazidi, a Kurdish religious minority. Nadia Murad saw most of her family murdered; she was herself raped and enslaved, but managed to escape, and now travels around the globe, visiting refugee camps and giving speeches to raise awareness of the genocide in her homeland. She is, obviously, a tremendously inspirational and sympathetic figure, but On Her Shoulders isn’t just about that, to its benefit. Director Alexandria Bombach sees Murad at her most vulnerable and private, and the telling and retelling of this story is clearly traumatic for her. Bombach assembles a montage of the questions she’s asked, all pushing for the gory details of her ordeal, a barrage of inquisition, before cutting to Murad calmly, to camera, running down some of the questions she is not asked. This is not just a snapshot of a brave activist. It’s a savvy bit of media analysis, pointedly questioning the manner in which survivors are exploited and packaged — and how we can often dwell on misery rather than take action to reduce it. (Includes featurette and trailer.)

ON BLU-RAY

Far From Heaven: The central premise of Todd Haynes’ 2002 masterpiece remains ingenious: make a movie in the style of Douglas Sirk’s beloved and complicated 1950s melodramas, and set it in that period, but explore the adult subject matter with a frankness not allowed by the Production Code of the time. Which is not to say that Haynes goes for full-on raunch (it’s still only a PG-13), but he makes the subtext text regarding homosexuality and interracial romance, and does so in a way that makes not only for riveting drama, but for thoughtful and incisive film criticism. Julianne Moore is marvelous (as always), Dennis Haysbert finds all the right grace notes, and this may be the finest work of Dennis Quaid’s career. And Edward Lachman’s sumptuous cinematography has never looked better, thanks to KL Studio Classics’ gorgeous Blu-ray transfer. (Includes audio commentary, featurettes, and trailer.)

Wanda: The old line about punk is that there were only a dozen people at the Sex Pistols’ Manchester Gig but they all started bands, and it feels like something similar must’ve happened with this 1970 drama from writer/director/star Barbara Loden (a new addition to the Criterion Collection) — it barely made a blip when it was originally released, but you can see its footprints all over American independent film. Loden was something akin to Hollywood royalty (she was married to Elia Kazan, and appeared in several of his films and plays), but Wanda feels like it was made by a documentarian, most likely one from its rural Pennsylvania setting; she doesn’t just point her camera at these drab, depressing motel rooms, studio apartments, dive bars, and diners, but seems to live in them. And her performance is a marvel of quiet observation, full of flat yet compelling line readings, a character so passive, she becomes a criminal accomplice mostly by default. Loden’s only directorial effort, it’s the work of a major talent that the industry simply wasn’t ready to reckon with. (Includes featurette, archival interviews, trailer, and a Loden short film.)

Detour: There’s something almost unseemly about the crispness of Criterion’s new 4K restoration of Edgar G. Ulmer’s no-budget wonder from 1945, which has circulated in shabby public domain versions for so long now, its seedy ugliness seemed part of its aesthetic. But finally having a great-looking version available ultimately underscores the impressiveness of Ulmer’s achievement; though it was shot quickly and cheaply for a nowhere Poverty Row outfit, Detour is blessed with the kind of tough, nowhere nihilism that seldom made its way into studio pictures of the era. Tom Neal is properly dopey as the heel of the story, but Ann Savage is the star of the show, with a performance unmatched in sheer nastiness. (Includes documentary, featurette, new interview, and trailer.)

The Big Fix: The ‘70s were a rich period for private eye movies, both throwbacks and updates (why, there are even some good books about that subgenre), but this adaptation of Roger L. Simon’s novel was one of the most firmly rooted in the era — dealing, as it does, with a private eye who was once a Berkley radical, and must come to terms with the idealistic compromises he and his fellow travelers have made. Richard Dreyfuss is spot-on in the leading role, while F. Murray Abraham is an absolute scene-stealer as a former counterculture superstar. (Includes isolated score track and trailer.)

What is That ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Credits Scene All About? https://briefnews.eu/what-is-that-spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-credits-scene-all-about/ https://briefnews.eu/what-is-that-spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-credits-scene-all-about/#respond Sat, 15 Dec 2018 13:00:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/what-is-that-spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-credits-scene-all-about/ Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse Credits Scene

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a superhero movie, so it should come as no surprise that it has a post-credits scene that sets the stage for future installments of the animated Spider-Verse. However, if you’re only a casual Spider-Man fan, you might have been confused about how the scene unfolded and exactly what was going on. But don’t worry, we explain the Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse credits scene in detail below.

First of all, let’s set the stage as to how this post-credits comes to be within the narrative of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, especially if you’re choosing to read this story and haven’t seen the movie yet.

Into the Spider-Verse finds Kingpin (Liev Schreiber) trying to use a particle collider to tap into parallel dimensions in an effort to bring a different version of his wife and son into his own dimension so he can be reunited with them. Kingpin’s wife and son left him when they saw him fighting Spider-Man and realized that he wasn’t a good guy.

However, the particle collider ends up creating some complications and brings elements of the other dimensions into the New York City occupied by Miles Morales (Shameik Moore). That’s how the alternate version of Peter Parker as Spider-Man (Jake Johnson), Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), and Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage) come to be in the presence of Miles Morales. Complications from the dimensions merging partially result in the transferred Spider-People facing the prospect of disintegrating unless the rift in the dimension is closed by properly shutting down the collider once and for all.

While Into the Spider-Verse has a happy ending, sending all of the dislocated Spider-People back to their own universes, there’s one who only experiences this rift between dimensions from a distance, and that’s who we meet in the post-credits scene.

Spider-Man 2099

Spider-Man 2099 is Watching

After all the credits have rolled, a comic bubble appears saying “Meanwhile, in Nueva York…”

A scientist sort of woman appears on screen and she’s talking about the dimension-hopping that just unfolded in the movie, speaking to a character off-screen named Miguel. Suddenly, that character appears, and it’s another version of Spider-Man that the bigger webslinger fans will immediately recognize.

That’s Miguel O’Hara, better known as Spider-Man 2099, and in this post-credits scene, he’s voiced by Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Ex Machina). He’s wearing his traditional red and blue suit with a much more prominent and unique spider logo design and a face looking more like a luchador than the traditional Spidey mask.

This futuristic version of Spider-Man first debuted in 1992 as part of an overarching Marvel comic series that took place in the year 2099. Miguel was a geneticist working at the Alchemax Corporation, which just so happens to be the same company at the center of the particle collider project in Into the Spider-Verse. In the comics, he’s tricked into taking a highly addictive drug so that he won’t leave the company, so he tries to cure himself by rewriting his own genetic code. Unfortunately, a co-worker sabotages him, resulting in him receiving spider DNA and becoming the future’s new Spider-Man.

The presence of Spider-Man 2099 could be a big deal for the future of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse since it might allow for another Spider-Person to pop up in Miles’ version of New York City, especially since the barrier between dimensions is open enough to allow Gwen Stacy to pop her head into Miles’ bedroom at the very end of the movie. And with Spider-Man 2099’s origins being tied to Alchemax Corporation, there could be a sequel story making the future Spider-Man a key player.

But this post-credits scene isn’t concerned with that for now. Instead, they used Spider-Man 2099 for a funny gag.

Double Identity Spider-Man

Spider-Man Double Identity Crisis

If you’ve been on the internet at all, you know that there are several memes featuring the original 1967 animated series adaptation of Spider-Man. But perhaps the most famous is the image of two Spider-Men pointing at each other in a warehouse from an episode called “Double Identity.”

In the post-credits scene, Spider-Man 2099 says he’s going back to “the beginning” in order to partake in his own dimension-hopping story, and he makes a jump to Earth-67, where he becomes part of this famous scene. Spider-Man 2099 and the original animated Spider-Man point at each other and keep trying to convince they other that they’re the real Spider-Man.

It’s a hilarious gag that doesn’t really mean anything in the overall scheme of things, but the fact that Oscar Isaac is voicing the character likely means that Spider-Man 2099 won’t just be used for a quick joke after the credits. Plus, the reason Spider-Man 2099 is able to jump into another dimension like this is because he has a watch that allows him to pass through different dimensions. That technology could be used to allow other Spider-People to jump dimensions, and the possibilities are endless as to what the sequels to Into the Spider-Verse could do next.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is in theaters now, and a sequel is already in the works.

Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse reviews: What do critics say about Miles Morales movie? https://briefnews.eu/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-reviews-what-do-critics-say-about-miles-morales-movie/ https://briefnews.eu/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-reviews-what-do-critics-say-about-miles-morales-movie/#respond Fri, 14 Dec 2018 20:03:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-reviews-what-do-critics-say-about-miles-morales-movie/

Spider-Man has had many incarnations since his comic book inception in 1962. The Marvel character was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and writer-artist Steve Ditko. He has appeared in everything from the pages of comics to TV to screens to video games. Though Spider-Man is the superhero name of mild-mannered Peter Parker, an alternate universe exists in which another boy, Miles Morales, takes over the mantle…

What do critics have to say about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse?

It is safe to say the film was universally adored, by fans and critics alike.

The movie holds a 98 per cent fresh rating on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

A.O Scott of The New York Times praised the animated Spider-Man adaptation.

He wrote: “This may be the first Spider-Man feature to qualify as a great New York movie, drawn from the life of the city rather than outdated stereotypes.”

Emily Yoshida of Vulture was likewise impressed, and wrote: “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse feels like the first major animated film in ages to actively try something stylistically new that didn’t involve proprietary Scandinavian building blocks.”

Ty Burr of the Boston Globe gave it an impressive four out of four stars.

Burr wrote: “A pop-art roller coaster ride with soul, it can dazzle even a sick-of-superheroes doubter with two hours of thoroughgoing delight.

“Take the kids. Better yet, take the kid in yourself.”

Molly Freeman of Screenrant said: “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse delivers a funny, heartwarming and fresh superhero origin story with gorgeously executed comic-style animation”

Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter called the movie a: “A free-wheeling, fast-and-loose, strikingly animated addition to one of the biggest library of films in the Marvel collection.”

Giving it a near perfect 3.5 out of four was Brian Truitt of USA Today.

Truitt said Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was “a slightly insane, hilariously daring and often touching mashup of everything that makes super-flicks so darn popular with the introduction of a Spider-Man who’s ready-made for today’s generation of kids.”

For IndieWire, David Ehrlich gave the movie a grade of B+ and wrote: “The film’s wild and contradictory aesthetic – elements of which clash against each other like some kind of dissonant cartoon jazz – dazzlingly explodes the outmoded idea that superhero movies have to look a certain way.”

Jesse Hassenger also gave Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse a B+.

Hassenger wrote: “This is the seventh Spider-Man feature film in 16 years, but this universe has rarely felt so fresh.”

Common Sense Media’s Sandie Angulo Chen called the movie a “rousingly entertaining superhero adventure.”

She added: “It is everything a great family movie should be: laugh-out-loud funny, filled with teachable moments, and appealing to parents and kids of all ages”

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is out in cinemas now.

Nearly every single film adaptation of a Marvel Comics property features a cameo by the recently departed comic creator Stan Lee. Even though Lee is no longer with us, his legacy lives on thanks to his work in comics, but he also his handful of appearances left to be revealed in upcoming Marvel movies, including this week’s new animated Spider-Man movie.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse already features multiple Spider-People, but in addition, eagle-eyed fans might notice multiple Stan Lee cameos popping up all around New York City. And that’s not a spoiler, because you’re going to have to pause the movie at home in order to catch all of the various Stan Lee appearances in the background of this vibrant animated movie.

Find out about these multiple Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse Stan Lee cameos below.

In an interview with Collider, co-directors Rodney Rothman and Bob Persichetti revealed that Stan Lee has more than the usual cameo in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. On top of the traditional appearance that fans won’t have trouble spotting, you’ll see him pop up elsewhere on several occasions:

Rodney Rothman: Stan Lee has more than one cameo in the movie.

Bob Persichetti: The easiest to spot, because you don’t have to stop the film, is when Peter and Miles are on the ground on the sidewalk, after they’d fallen from the train, there’s a dog who smells them with a guy who walks over them. That’s Stan again. On his way home from work. But then I will say, there are many, many train scenes. Subway shots. If you just pause, he’s in a lot of them. That guy is all over New York. He’s a busy man.

The background of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is full of fun visual touches like that. It’s the kind of movie where you’ll be noticing new things every time you rewatch it. In fact, fans of director Edgar Wright will be happy to see this alternate universe Easter egg that the filmmaker called our attention to on Instagram:

That’s right, in one of the parallel universes in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, there’s a sequel to Shaun of the Dead called From Dusk Till Shaun. At least it appears to be a sequel since Nick Frost’s character Ed is already a zombie, just as he was at the end of Shaun of the Dead. Then again, maybe From Dusk Til Shaun is just an alternate universe version of Shaun of the Dead. Either way, that’s a fun Easter egg, and there are plenty more of them in the movie. So keep an eye out this weekend.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hits theaters on December 14, 2018.
