Game of Thrones season eight is released on HBO and Sky Atlantic next month and fans are keen to know what spoilers are in store. One theory put forward by Game of Thrones fans suggests the mythical Ice Spiders could be introduced in the new series. Here are all the clues as to whether or not the Ice Spiders will appear alongside the White Walkers and if they’ll play a major part in season eight of Game of Thrones.

Will there be Ice Spiders in Game of Thrones season 8?

Game of Thrones season eight will see the return of The Night King (played by Vladimir Furdik) and the White Walkers but there is no official word as to whether Ice Spiders will appear alongside them.

George R.R. Martin, the series creator did drop a major hint they could make an appearance, however.

Martin tweeted a picture of a 2020 calendar which depicted a White Walker riding on the back of one of the mythical creatures.

Alongside the photo, Martin wrote: “Here’s an official sneak peek of John Howe’s cover art of our 2020 SoI&F calendar featuring the legendary ice spiders which haunt old Nan’s creepiest bedtime stories.”

While this doesn’t necessarily guarantee their introduction, HBO and Sky Atlantic viewers may remember Jon Snow (Kit Harington) hinting at their arrival in a previous episode.

WHERE IS GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8 FILMED?

In Game of Thrones season five, Jon Snow and the wildlings gathered to discuss joining forces against the dead.

Jon Snow explained dragonglass can be used to kill the White Walkers, prompting a mixed reception among the wildlings.

Loboda (Zachary Baharov) remained unconvinced by Jon’s revelation, reminding everyone about the legend of Ice Spiders.

However, Karsi (Birgitte Hjort Sørensen) told her fellow free folk member stranger things had happened and Ice Spiders could well exist beyond the wall.

With the White Walkers progressing south in the new season, there’s no saying they won’t be accompanied by Ice Spiders.

Those suffering from Arachnophobia or who are just not fond of the eight-legged creatures should, for a while, stay clear of visiting Western Greece, where a 300-meter-long cobweb covered the coastal area in the town of Aitoliko.

The breathtaking scenery of clear blue Mediterranean Sea waters in Aitoliko has been spoiled by a massive spiderweb, which has sprung up next to a lagoon on the shores of the town. Footage of the phenomenon shows endless layers of mesh covering the trees, the ground and all the objects in the immediate vicinity of the beach.

Locals blame Tetragnatha spiders –and their quest to create large nests for mating– for spoiling the majestic scenery. Humidity and the spread of mosquitoes, providing excessive nutrition to the eight-legged creature population, may also have contributed to the unusual cobwebs smothering the plateau and its flora.

  • One benefit to having spiders in your home is their tendency to capture nuisance pests and disease-carrying insects such as mosquitoes.
  • Rather than killing any spiders you find, make an effort to release them outdoors.

I know it may be hard to convince you, but let me try: Don’t kill the next spider you see in your home.

Why? Because spiders are an important part of nature and our indoor ecosystem — as well as being fellow organisms in their own right.

Bernie Sanders and Barack Obama are among a select few political and environmental figures to have the unusual distinction of getting a newly discovered spider species named after them.

Researchers from the University of Vermont (UVM) identified 15 new species of “smiley-faced” spiders in the genus ‘Spintharus’ – and even issued them with names after well-known social justice advocates.

“We need to understand and protect biodiversity in its many forms, and we felt compelled to recognize leaders that understand this,” said Ingi Agnarsson, the UVM biology professor who led the project.

Michelle Obama, David Bowie, Leonardo diCaprio and David Attenborough are also among the recipients of an honorary spider species moniker.

Previously it was believed that these spiders, which have a pattern on their abdomens reminiscent of a smiling face, were a single widespread species. However, after examining them across a range of countries, the team determined that they are many endemic species.

Spiders from Jamaica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Lesser Antilles, Florida, South Carolina, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Colombia were analysed by the team with the assistance of the Caribbean Biogeography Project  and biologist Greta Binford from Lewis & Clark College.

Agnarsson explained that each UVM student involved in the research was tasked with naming a spider species.

Unsurprisingly, it was a group decision to designate one spider species ‘S. berniesandersi’ after US Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont).

“That spider species will be named after Bernie forever,” student researcher Ben Chomitz said.

Agnarsson said the discovery changed his views on conservation and biodiversity.

“Thoughts about conservation change dramatically when you go from having a common, widespread species to an endemic on, say, Jamaica that has very specific conservation needs,” he said. “All the sudden we have fifteen-fold increase in diversity in this particular group – just because we did a detailed study.”  

“That tells us something about biodiversity in general. The more we look, the more we discover,” the professor added.

The research has been published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.

Sony has announced that Claire Foy has been officially cast as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Director Fede Alvarez offered this statement:

Earlier this year, Sony surprised many movie fans by confirming that they were working on a follow-up to David Fincher’s 2011 film The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. They also confirmed the rumors that Fincher and original stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara would not be returning. This was to be something of a reboot. To emphasize this, the studio even chose to skip the next two books in author Stieg Larsson’s series and instead adapt The Girl in the Spider’s Web, which was written by David Lagercrantz and published 11 years after Larsson’s death.

And now we know that Claire Foy, best known for starring in Netflix’s The Crown, is the current frontrunner for the role of antisocial hacker/crime solver Lisbeth Salander.

The scoop comes our way via The Hollywood Reporter, following rumors that big name stars like Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson were being considered for the part. At the time, it was suspected that a more well-known actress wouldn’t be interested in stepping into a role that originated with someone else and those suspicions now seem warranted.

But Lisbeth Salander doesn’t need to be played by a star. After all, Rooney Mara was not a household name when she took that gig. The character is popular enough to stand on her own. And then there’s the fact that Foy, who won a Golden Globe for her work as Queen Elizabeth in The Crown, is a fine actress and a fine choice for a movie like this. She’s a proven talent, but not so recognizable that she’ll overshadow the character. If done right, her portrayal could exist right alongside Mara’s.

While The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo wasn’t a bomb by any means, it was a very expensive movie that struggled to break even at the box office. Expect this new film, which is set to be helmed by Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez, to have a much smaller budget. After all, the $ 102 million made by the first movie is an amazing number for an R-rated, feel-bad, 158-minute mystery for adult audiences…but that movie also cost $ 90 million. Sony is certainly aware of this.

On some occasions spiders, such as the false widow, can be potentially harmful to humans because of their bites. 

But the best way to keep any spiders at bay is to keep a clean home. 

Chemicals and pesticides, a common method used by many to kill spiders, can often be dangerous for your family and pets, and are not environmentally-friendly. But Rentokil, which offers a professional spider service, has some simple tips on their removal. 

On its website it advises: “The most effective way to control spiders is to limi their food source. 

“This should include clearing away dead flies, woodlice, millipedes, centipedes and other crawling insects.” 

Five simple steps from Rentokil could keep your home arachnid-free. 

Vacuum regularly

Look to do this in particularly sheltered spots – beneath worktops, backs of cupboards or under and behind large furniture. 

Remove noticeable webs on a regular basis. 

Fill in gaps 

Look for gaps in walls, around pipework and under doors, and filling these in will deter entry. 

Remove sheltering sites 

Make sure you don’t have firewood piles, garden bags, compost piles and general clutter near your property. 

Deter all insects 

Use lightning in a way that is less attractive to the insects (flies) that spiders feed on. 

Clothes moths in your home are hard to notice, and you may not realise you have an infestation until fabric, fur or feathered items in your house become damaged. But there is a way of identifying the problem and some nifty tricks to get rid of them.

A new study has revealed that spiders eat an estimated twice as much as humans and even devour more than whales.

A team of researchers from Switzerland, Sweden and Germany used data from 65 previous studies to come to the conclusion that spiders rank among the world’s deadliest killers.

Spiders can devour between 400 and 800 million tons (metric) of prey each year. Combined, every species of spider in the world –  roughly 45,000 –  weighs about 25 million tons.

The study, published in The Science of Nature journal, revealed that the majority of the arachnids’ victims are insects but some of the more frightening creepy crawlies have been known to feast on vertebrates such as lizards, frogs, fish and small mammals.

Humans collectively consume an estimated 400 million tons of fish and meat per annum according to a 2014 study by United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, while whales chomp down between 280 to 500 million tons of seafood.

The world’s total seabird population get through a paltry 70 million tons of seafood compared to their eight-legged counterparts, according to the study.

“We hope that these estimates and their significant magnitude raise public awareness and increase the level of appreciation for the important global role of spiders in terrestrial food webs,” said study author Martin Nyffeler.

The research was carried out by a team made up from the University of Basel, Switzerland, Lund University, Sweden and the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg in Germany.
