Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Welcome to your weekend! The theme today is looking back, whether it’s to mid-90s HTML, some of our highlight stories from the last week or quirky retro toys.

Of course it is.Speak & Spell is B-A-C-K

Basic Fun is introducing a revived $ 25 Speak & Spell that includes all the familiar games, that simple segmented display (albeit one based on modern LCDs) and, of course, that signature orange-and-yellow design. There’s one other big difference: It’s using recorded dialog processed to sound like it’s synthesized, instead of generating sounds on the spot.

One last pic.Kepler beams back final image from its almost decade-long journey

Check out the space telescope’s last-ever snapshot before it ran out of fuel.

Well, almost.Elon Musk: Model 3 price now starts at $ 35,000

Tesla has lowered the Model 3’s price across all versions by $ 1,100, so you can now get the mid-range battery option for $ 42,900 before incentives. Meanwhile, the car’s long-range version now costs $ 49,900, while the performance option will set you back $ 60,900. Elon Musk said that means the Model 3 now has a starting price of $ 35,000, though that’s after you apply tax credits and fuel savings — you’ll have to wait a bit more for the long-promised Tesla car with a $ 35,000 base price.

Fire up the ColdFusion, Geocities is back. The ‘Captain Marvel’ site revisits classic 90s web design

If you remember web browsing in the days of 28.8 dial-up and web rings then the official Captain Marvel site will be an unexpected treat. The movie is set in 1995, and appropriately its official website looks like something made for viewing via Netscape Navigator (even if its code is a little too hefty to access without a modern broadband connection).

Google’s new feature takes a page from Firefox Monitor.Chrome can tell you if your passwords have been compromised

Once installed, Google’s Password Checkup extension will simply sit in your Chrome browser and alert you if you enter a username / password combination that it “knows to be unsafe.” The company says it has a database of 4 billion credentials that have been compromised in various data breaches that it can check against.

When the extension detects an insecure password, it’ll prompt you with a big red dialog box to immediately update your info. It’s handy, but users might wonder exactly what Google can see — to that end, Google says the extension “never reveal[s] this personal information.”

But wait, there’s more…

The middle Belcher child receives an offer he can absolutely refuse in this exclusive sneak peek from Sunday’s Bob’s Burgers (Fox, 8:30/7:30c) when Courtney’s dad requests that he fill in for her partner at an upcoming roller dance pairs competition.

What happens next is an act of betrayal that no one will see coming. Well, no one except for those who read the official synopsis for the episode. Spoilers ahead:

Gene is livid when his best friend Alex (guest-voice Thomas Middleditch) ditches him to be Courtney’s (guest-voice David Wain) roller dancing partner. Comment about ‘public hanging’ spells trouble for Mississippi senator https://briefnews.eu/comment-about-public-hanging-spells-trouble-for-mississippi-senator/ https://briefnews.eu/comment-about-public-hanging-spells-trouble-for-mississippi-senator/#respond Tue, 13 Nov 2018 00:17:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/comment-about-public-hanging-spells-trouble-for-mississippi-senator/

Mississippi Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith, who is facing a runoff Senate election against an African-American Democrat, has found herself in hot water after joking that she would sit in “the front row” at a public hanging.

A video tweeted by journalist Lamar White Jr. of the Bayou Brief shows Hyde-Smith standing alongside a supporter at a campaign event in Tupelo, where she was speaking to a small gathering of people. Referring to the supporter, the Republican senator says that if he “invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row.”

Jokes about public hangings don’t tend to go down very well in Mississippi, though, given its grim history. There were 654 racially-motivated lynchings in the southern state between 1877 to 1950 — more than in any other US state.

The comment was arguably more problematic given that Hyde-Smith’s opponent Mike Espy is the first African-American to win a Mississippi seat in the US House of Representatives since Reconstruction — and would be the first black person to represent the state in the US Senate, if he beats Hyde-Smith.

Many on social media immediately seized upon the comment as “racist” and insensitive “dog whistle” politics. Espy’s campaign called the remark “reprehensible” and said it indicated that she “lacks the understanding and judgement” necessary to represent the state.

Explaining her remark, Hyde-Smith said it was simply “an exaggerated expression of regard” for her supporter and that “any attempt to turn this into a negative connotation is ridiculous.”

Other Twitter users pointed out that Hyde-Smith’s home town of Brookhaven was the scene of multiple lynchings throughout its history and suggested that invitations to public hangings were “probably” something that the senator’s grandparents were “familiar” with.

Derrick Johnson, the head of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) who is from Mississippi himself, said that the senator’s decision to joke about public hangings “in a state known for its violent and terroristic history” toward African-Americans was “sick” and “shameful.”

On Twitter, Johnson later said that Hyde-Smith’s response to the controversy was “tone deaf and demonstrates disregard” for the state’s history.

Hyde-Smith has held Mississippi’s junior senate seat since April, after she was appointed to replace Thad Cochran, who resigned due to illness. Both she and Espy received 41 percent of the vote in the midterm election last week, but since neither candidate reached the required 50 percent, they will now face each other in a runoff election, due to be held on November 27.

The public hanging comments came just days after a nurse (and former police officer) was fired after being photographed wearing a ‘Mississippi Justice’ t-shirt featuring a Confederate flag and a noose to his polling place.

Cornwall will see thousands of staycationers flock to its sandy beaches during the summer months of 2018.

As the UK’s most southwestern point, the region ends at Land’s End, with the iconic signpost pointing to a number of different destinations.

As staycation holidays look to continue in 2018, the weather forecast for British holidaymakers during the next bank holiday weekend may entice many to head to the coast this May.

The Met Office has predicted much warmer weather.

What is the weather forecast for Cornwall during May bank holiday weekend?

Despite being cooler than the summer months later in the year, the May bank holiday can see great weather nearer the coast.

Showers are to be predicted for the next week with “rain or showers”, although even these will be cut with sunny spells.

The Met Office that “temperatures are likely to be around normal, or perhaps warm at times” towards the weekend.

Leading into June, temperatures are likely to “be above normal” in the first week for the Cornish coast.

James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said: “Currently June looks like starting on quite a warm and sunny note.”

For Britons heading to Cornwall to chase the good weather this month, the region was voted as one of the happiest places to be in the UK.

A pub lunch in Cornwall was voted the happiest thing to do on holiday, according to The Serviced Apartment Company research.

The BBC weather forecast for the UK predicts there could be another heatwave as soon as next week, thanks to low pressure being pushed by warm west weather.

The average temperature in May is 16 degrees, although this year has been one of the hottest on record.

Last week, the bank holiday temperature exceeded 28 degrees, making it the hottest since the May bank holiday was invented in 1971.

It is also often the driest month with just 54mm of rainfall across the UK, compared to the summer months.

June and August can see over 60mm, despite the warmer weather.

Holidaymakers will have to first plunge through the chill predicted tonight as temperatures plummet.

Rain is expected this week with highs of just 16 degrees following the drop in the east.

Thunder is also expected as well as storms in the southwest of the country.

Medieval dodgeball is a pair of words I didn’t know I needed to come together until now. Strikers Edge puts together a fast-paced challenge of dodging attacks from opponents and whipping back your own in a single player campaign or against your friends and the masses in local or online multiplayer.

Take control of one of eight possible characters and start firing off unique abilities at your opponents, trying not to get hit until someone drops from a failure to dodge. As you progress through the game, you’ll find various arenas that each have their own obstacles to keep you from getting too comfortable with a certain strategy as well, making for more dangers than just simple dodging.

In the single player mode, players can explore the intricate backstories of these characters while finding their favorite playstyle, then take on the multiplayer side of the game with strategies learned in the campaign. Players can enjoy either 1v1 or 2v2 sessions to test their skills against others in an online or offline environment! So, challenge your friend or drag them into your fight against others in the ruthless weapon-filled dodgeball arena.

You can purchase Strikers Edge on Steam or PS4. You can also check out the developers on Twitter and Facebook!

Banks are making it harder to get a car loan — and it spells trouble for the auto industry https://briefnews.eu/banks-are-making-it-harder-to-get-a-car-loan-and-it-spells-trouble-for-the-auto-industry/ https://briefnews.eu/banks-are-making-it-harder-to-get-a-car-loan-and-it-spells-trouble-for-the-auto-industry/#respond Sun, 12 Nov 2017 12:35:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/banks-are-making-it-harder-to-get-a-car-loan-and-it-spells-trouble-for-the-auto-industry/ frozen car snowCarlo Allegri/Reuters

  • Banks are tightening their lending standards for prime and subprime auto loans.
  • Some of this tightening is already showing up in the data. For example, the average maturity of new-vehicle loans peaked in Q1 2017 at 67.4 months.
  • That banks are tightening their auto-lending standards ever so gradually is another headwind the auto industry is facing.

Banks have started to tighten lending standards for prime and subprime borrowers, and it shows.

Banks are further tightening their lending standards for prime and subprime auto loans. This process started in Q2 2016, when auto lending had reached the apogee of loosey-goosey underwriting that had boosted sales of new and used vehicles to record levels and had ballooned auto loan-balances outstanding to the $ 1-trillion mark. It also boosted risks for lenders. Inevitably, subprime auto loans started running into trouble in 2016, and it was time to not throw the last trace of prudence into the wind entirely.

The chart below — based on data from the Fed’s Senior Loan Officer Survey on bank lending practices for the third quarter — shows the net percentage of banks tightening lending standards. The negative percentages below the red line signify net easing. It shows how loan officers have gradually, in fits and starts, dialed back their easing before Q2 2016 and ratcheted up their tightening after Q2 2016:

US Loan officer survey_2017 Q3Wolf Street

During Q3 2017, 10% of the banks tightened underwriting conditions, compared to the prior quarter, but 0% loosened underwriting conditions. In other words, the tightening is proceeding gradually, on a bank-by-bank basis, and the easing has stopped entirely.

“Banks reportedly tightened most terms surveyed for auto loans,” the report says. Specifically, here are some of the terms the banks tightened in Q3, which adds to the banks that tightening in prior quarters:

  • 7% net tightened conditions on minimum required down payments.
  • 5% net tightened conditions on credit scores
  • 8% net tightened granting loans to customers that did not meet credit scoring thresholds

In a set of special questions, the October survey asked why banks were changing credit standards or terms for prime and subprime borrowers “this year.” The reasons were nearly the same for both prime and subprime borrowers, but subprime is clearly the bigger concern. Here is what banks said about their reasons for tightening lending standards for subprime borrowers:

  • Less favorable or more uncertain economic outlook: 50% somewhat important; 30% very important.
  • Deterioration or expected deterioration in the quality of your bank’s existing loan portfolio: 30% somewhat important; 40% very important.
  • Reduced tolerance for risk: 30% somewhat important; 50% very important.
  • Less favorable or more uncertain expectations regarding collateral values [used vehicle values]: 40% somewhat important; 40% very important.
  • Lower or more uncertain resale value for these loans in the secondary market: 33% very important; 0% somewhat important.

Some of this tightening is already showing up in the data. For example, the average maturity of new-vehicle loans peaked in Q1 2017 at 67.4 months, according to Federal Reserve data. The data for Q3 is not yet available, but by Q2 the average maturity dropped to 66.5 months, the first major drop since 2011.

Note on the left side of the chart how the average maturity plunged during the Financial Crisis as credit was freezing up and as auto sales collapsed, and it was hard to get anything financed:

US auto loan maturity 2017 Q2Wolf Street

But the tightening hasn’t yet shown up in total auto loan balances outstanding, which jumped by $ 19 billion during the third quarter, likely boosted by the first batch of replacement sales from the hurricanes.

What has shown up is a massive adjustment of the data going back to Q4 2015. Since I keep the old data, I overlaid the prior unadjusted data (red line) and the current adjusted data (blue columns) in the chart below. The adjustment retroactively wiped out $ 39 billion in auto loan balances in Q4 2015. By Q1 2017, the adjustment had wiped out $ 41 billion:

US auto loans 2017 Q3Wolf Street

Adjustment of data happens all the time. These are estimates that can be off, and occasionally, adjustments are made to try to put them back on track. But it does show that auto loans did not suddenly plunge in Q4 2015, as the chart based on the blue columns alone would have otherwise indicated.

That banks are tightening their auto-lending standards ever so gradually is another headwind the auto industry is facing. The hurricanes, by destroying or damaging a few hundred thousand vehicles, created some temporary replacement demand for new and used vehicles, some of it financed by insurance companies.

This replacement demand is now papering over the underlying problems of the industry that are constraining demand:

  • Too much auto debt
  • Too much “negative equity” in vehicles after years of loosey-goosey lending, which makes trading difficult
  • New vehicle prices that have moved out of reach
  • And incomes that have been stagnating for a large part of the population.

And these headwinds will still be there after the replacement demand from the hurricanes settles down.

Why that steamy ‘Game of Thrones’ finale scene spells trouble for Jon and Daenerys in season 8 https://briefnews.eu/why-that-steamy-game-of-thrones-finale-scene-spells-trouble-for-jon-and-daenerys-in-season-8/ https://briefnews.eu/why-that-steamy-game-of-thrones-finale-scene-spells-trouble-for-jon-and-daenerys-in-season-8/#respond Mon, 28 Aug 2017 05:17:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-that-steamy-game-of-thrones-finale-scene-spells-trouble-for-jon-and-daenerys-in-season-8/ Jon Snow Daenerys Targaryen Game of Thrones finale dragonpitHBO

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the “Game of Thrones” season seven finale.

Fire and ice finally merged, in more ways than one, on the “Game of Thrones” season seven finale. Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen made love on a boat as viewers at home were treated to Bran’s flashbacks revealing Jon’s true parentage.

Jon is definitively the son of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen (Daenerys’ oldest brother) and Lyanna Stark, making Daenerys Jon’s aunt. And new lover.

But Jon and Daenerys have no clue about their shared blood. Instead they have accidentally fallen in love with each other, and their relationship has now been consummated on the show.

Daenerys Targaryen bed game of thronesHBO

Showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff explained this bombshell in the post-episode featurette.

“Just as we’re seeing these two people come together, we’re hearing the information that will inevitably (if not tear them apart) cause them real problems in their relationship,” Weiss said. “And she’s his aunt.”

“It complicates everything on a political level and on a personal level,” Benioff said. “And it just takes everything that could have been so neat and sort of perfect for Jon and Dany and it really muddies the waters.”

Fans are more torn than ever about their relationship

Though Targaryens have long practiced incest as part of their culture as a way to keep bloodlines pure, some fans are still not used to the idea.

But others were cheering, happy to finally see both Jon and Daenerys find love again after each losing a cherished partner.

Why this story can’t have a happy ending

This is “Game of Thrones,” so clearly Jon and Daenerys are not being set up to live happily ever after in Westeros. The first hiccup in their new relationship will likely be the revelation that Daenerys is Jon’s aunt. Though it probably wouldn’t bother Daenerys too much, Jon is far less likely to be unphased by the news.

Even though Jon’s blood has Targaryen in it, he was raised in the north by Ned Stark. The concept of intermarrying siblings, cousins, or aunts and nephews is likely to give him pause. And who knows, maybe Daenerys will hate it also.

But more importantly, the revelation of Jon’s true parentage means he is above Daenerys in the line of succession.

Daenerys has a very strong reliance on her claim to the Iron Throne. Sure, it’s not her entire reason for wanting to be Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, but it was the driving factor behind her initial sense of self. After her brother Viserys died, she truly believed that the Iron Throne was her birth right. How will she feel when she learns Jon Snow is really the next in line?

A possible Daenerys pregnancy on the horizon

The sixth episode of season seven, “Beyond the Wall,” was very heavy-handed with exposition about Daenerys not having a successor and being unable to bear children. When Jon tried to give Jorah his Valyrian sword, Jorah also mentioned the idea of Jon’s future children.

All of these moments combined might have been foreshadowing a possible Jon and Daenerys pregnancy.

Jon Daenerys Game of Thrones finale season sevenHBO

Daenerys believes she is infertile after the blood magic witch Mirri Maz Duur cursed her on the first season. You can read the full explanation of this “prophecy” and what it means for Daenerys here. Jon specifically called her out on this belief in the season seven finale.

What if that’s all in Daenerys’ head? What if she’s not infertile at all, and her and Jon start having sex more frequently? Could she possibly become pregnant? This is all speculation for now, but something to keep a pin in as we look ahead to the final season.

The Azor Ahai prophecy might doom one of them

Finally, their union might be destined to end in tragedy. The legendary Azor Ahai, also called the Prince That Was Promised, has been prophesied to return. All signs point to either Jon or Daenerys being this hero — or it might be their combined characteristics that can prevent the Long Night from falling once again.

However, in the original tale of Azor Ahai, the hero sacrifices his wife Nissa Nissa in order to create the one weapon that will defeat the coming darkness. We broke down this aspect of the prophecy in our Prince That Was Promised overview.

Daenerys Targaryen Game of Thrones season 7 finaleHBO

What if Jon or Daenerys has to kill the other? That could be the final marker of the prophecy, and confirm just Jon or Daenerys as our main hero. This would also fit in with George R.R. Martin’s idea of a bittersweet ending, and the fact that almost no true love has ever ended in happiness on the show.

We’ll have to wait until the eighth and final season to learn more. If you’re still confused about how Jon Snow fits into the Targaryen family tree, read our breakdown of his relationship to Daenerys here.

Bewitched: Chinese officials sacked for ‘casting spells’ https://briefnews.eu/bewitched-chinese-officials-sacked-for-casting-spells/ https://briefnews.eu/bewitched-chinese-officials-sacked-for-casting-spells/#respond Sat, 05 Aug 2017 21:03:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bewitched-chinese-officials-sacked-for-casting-spells/

Two Chinese officials have been sacked from the country’s ruling Communist Party for their involvement in “superstitious activities” which included casting magic spells in order to aid promotions.

Tang Yuansong and Huang Xiaowen were dismissed from their duties by officials who claimed the pair attended “fengshui” training courses under the guise of business trips and claimed expenses back from the party.

Yuansong attended the Hogwarts esque training session five times, at a total cost of 54,000 yuan ($ 8,000), which he was later reimbursed for according to state media outlet Xinhua.

After attending the magical sessions, the Gandalf loving official then went on to tutor other followers in the art for which authorities say he was paid 5,000 yuan a year.

Xiaowen drafted in others to assist in his wizardry antics. The disgraced official reportedly asked accomplices to arrange an altar to cast spells and paid the princely sum of 100,000 yuan in tribute each time, in the hope that he would be promoted.

Chinese Communist Party members are forbidden from following any religion in the officially atheist Asian country. The two men will now be investigated for “criminal activity” including “graft” and “embezzlement.”
