  • Elon Musk‘s Ad Astra school and educational software developer ClassDojo are introducing a set of “Conundrums” for elementary and middle school students.
  • The Conundrums involve open-ended critical thinking and ethics challenges.
  • They address questions that children may not normally encounter in a standard curriculum.
  • ClassDojo shared a couple examples of the new Conundrums with Business Insider.

Elon Musk’s secretive LA private school, Ad Astra, has developed a new tool for teachers and students.

Educational software developer ClassDojo is partnering up with Ad Astra to develop a set of critical thinking puzzles called “Conundrums” that they’ll release to teachers and students this fall. The tools are meant to offer the type of critical thinking espoused by Ad Astra, although Ad Astra is not using this specific tool.

The Conundrums pose open-ended critical thinking or ethical problems for the students, who are then encouraged to discuss the issues among themselves and reason out a solution. They tend to pose somewhat more nuanced and complicated questions than most elementary or middle school curricula address.

Here are a couple examples of the Conundrums, provided to Business Insider by ClassDojo:

One of the conundrum exercises addresses issues of property rights. A group of cartoon characters discovers a dinosaur skeleton on a neighbor’s land.

ClassDojo & Ad Astra Conundrums

Students are reminded to stay open-minded and respectful to each other while discussing the conundrum.

The teacher’s version of the app shows advice for helping students evaluate the task.

But neither Naga nor Charlie made the slip-up: today it was BBC correspondent Ben Thompson, who was presenting the business segment.

The report concerned public services outsourcing firm Serco, who maintain the radar at RAF’s Fylingdale station.

The broadcaster made a huge gaffe when someone behind-the-scenes at the BBC misspelled the name of the base.

Instead of “Fylingdales”, the graphic on the screen read “Flyingdales”.

Those watching at home were not happy with the gaffe and took to Twitter to comment.

One said: “#bbcbreakfast where is RAF Flyingdales?????? Come on BBC.”

“@BBCBreakfast it’s RAF Fylingdales, not Flyingdales,” a fan corrected.

“@BBCBreakfast change your graphic – it’s RAF Fylingdales,” a third exclaimed.

Another wrote: “@BBCBreakfast It’s RAF Fylingdales not Flyingdales as your graphic during the business news segment just on. #oops.”

Fans weren’t happy with news programme yesterday either after another error was made.

A segment on the link between dementia and binge drinking was overshadowed when the voice over suggested that 39 per cent was equivalent to 1 in 4 as a fraction.

Many were quick to point out that this was factually inaccurate, as 1 in 4 would be 25 per cent, a far cry from what the broadcaster was suggesting.

“This morning a report on heavy drinking and dementia says 39% of below 65s… which is nearly 1 in 4? Really…?? What a mess… #bbcbreakfast,” one wrote.

While another raged: “@BBCBreakfast In your report about alchohol and dementia study in France … 39% is NOT nearly ‘1 in 4’. Please be sure to not have that reporter do any financial stories!”(sic)

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.

BBC weather: Matt Taylor’s forecast hit by spelling ERROR as temperatures plummet https://briefnews.eu/bbc-weather-matt-taylors-forecast-hit-by-spelling-error-as-temperatures-plummet/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-weather-matt-taylors-forecast-hit-by-spelling-error-as-temperatures-plummet/#respond Mon, 06 Nov 2017 07:46:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-weather-matt-taylors-forecast-hit-by-spelling-error-as-temperatures-plummet/

Delivering the morning forecast, Matt said viewers may be shocked when they step outside as temperatures have plummeted overnight.

But as he informed those watching BBC Breakfast of some local temperatures, there was an error as ‘Teesside’ was missing another letter ‘s’.

One fan said: “@BBCBreakfast come on Matt how are you spelling Teesside!? Two ‘s’ please!”

Matt said there is a frost to start the day and there is dense fog across the Midlands and southern England which will clear later in the day.

It will be dry for most of the UK but western parts will see some rain with eastern Scotland and Northern Ireland seeing heavy showers.

This evening, it will be particularly chilly in the south east of England and West Anglia.

Western parts of the UK will get a lot of wet weather but overnight, the heavy rain will push southwards and eastwards along with strong, gusty winds.

Tomorrow, there will be frost in the west to start the day and the morning commute will be very wet across Scotland, Wales and the south west of England.

BBC Breakfast continues weekdays at 6am on BBC One.

Moss code: Shipwrecked Russian sailor rescued after spelling out 'HELP' on rocks (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/moss-code-shipwrecked-russian-sailor-rescued-after-spelling-out-help-on-rocks-video/ https://briefnews.eu/moss-code-shipwrecked-russian-sailor-rescued-after-spelling-out-help-on-rocks-video/#respond Wed, 01 Nov 2017 00:57:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/moss-code-shipwrecked-russian-sailor-rescued-after-spelling-out-help-on-rocks-video/

A 30-year-old Russian citizen who attempted to sail solo from Sweden to Spain in a sailboat he bought in Stockholm has been rescued after a major search operation discovered a message written in moss.

The man, who has not yet been identified publicly, was reported missing Wednesday, after family and friends lost contact with him two days into his voyage, reports The Local Sweden. Sweden’s Coast Guard launched an immediate search and rescue operation involving boats and helicopters in coordination with the Maritime Administration, the Swedish Sea Rescue Society and a number of civilian volunteers.

Hopes of finding the stricken sailor dimmed Friday when search teams located the wrecked boat off the southeast coast of Sweden. They quickly established that the man had been stranded since Wednesday, reducing the likelihood that he would be found alive.

Before all hope was lost entirely, however, rescuers flying in a helicopter above the Östergötland archipelago spotted a man on a small island next to the word ‘Help’ written in large letters with moss he had collected. The sailor was quickly taken to hospital in Linköping and is reportedly in good condition.

BBC weather: Matt Taylor’s forecast hit by MAJOR spelling gaffe https://briefnews.eu/bbc-weather-matt-taylors-forecast-hit-by-major-spelling-gaffe/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-weather-matt-taylors-forecast-hit-by-major-spelling-gaffe/#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2017 07:06:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-weather-matt-taylors-forecast-hit-by-major-spelling-gaffe/

As the meteorologist delivered the forecast, a message on the screen read: “Wnd easing, Sunny spells.”

One eagle-eyed fan picked up on the error which missed an ‘i’ to spell ‘wind’ and joked it “all goes wrong” without usual weather presenter, Carol Kirkwood.

They wrote on Twitter: “@BBCBreakfast that word ‘Wnd’ need an ‘i’ in it! @carolkirkwood it all goes wrong in your absence.”

Matt told viewers it will be a lovely autumn day in southern and eastern areas whereas the north of the UK will see the odd shower.

This morning, there will be a lot of cloud in north western Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England which will bring about some wet weather.

Sunny spells and blue skies will be seen in the east and south of England along with the vast majority of Wales, but it will remain cool to start with as temperatures will be in single figures.

Later this afternoon, there will be more cloud scattered around with temperatures ranging between 13 to 17 degrees celsius.

Tonight, the south of England will have light winds while long spells of rain will hammer down on northern Scotland and the temperature will drop overnight.

Tomorrow, most of the UK will enjoy dry, sunny spells but for Northern Ireland, southern Scotland and northern England, it will be cloudy and blustery.

Countdown suffers VERY rude blunder over this DISASTROUSLY explicit spelling mistake https://briefnews.eu/countdown-suffers-very-rude-blunder-over-this-disastrously-explicit-spelling-mistake/ https://briefnews.eu/countdown-suffers-very-rude-blunder-over-this-disastrously-explicit-spelling-mistake/#respond Sat, 22 Jul 2017 11:22:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/countdown-suffers-very-rude-blunder-over-this-disastrously-explicit-spelling-mistake/

The Channel 4 gameshow was renamed using an explicit word on Sky TV’s programme guide, according to a viewer.

Instead of spelling out the word “Countdown”, the guide read instead: “C***down’.

The eagle-eyed Sky customer shared the shocking image on Twitter, tagging Channel 4 and Rachel Riley as they asked: “What happened here?”

However, a representative for Sky told Express.co.uk that had looked into the matter and were not able to identify the spelling error in their systems.

There is a chance that the picture could have been doctored to show the rude word.

Meanwhile, Countdown had a racy day on the show as well, with maths whizz Rachel, 31, struggling to contain her humour as a saucy word was spelled out on the board.

Performing her usual letters and numbers duties, the blonde beauty was instructed by a contestant to pick out a consonant followed by two vowels and another consonant.

Unfortunately, the letters spelled out “loin”, causing Rachel to stifle a smirk as she turned her face away from the camera, clearly amused by the word.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star and Countdown pin-up was left blushing during yesterday’s instalment of the show after one hopeful played the word “spank”.

A particularly tricky round saw both contestants find only five-letter words, with one playing the naughty offering before host Nick Hewer, 73, joked: “Any more spanking?”

Dictionary Corner favourite Susie Dent, 52, admitted that she hadn’t spotted that one, saying: “We didn’t have sank actually,” as Rachel appeared to blush as she rearranged the letters on the board.

Countdown airs weekdays at 2.10pm on Channel 4.

Emmerdale: Viewers spot MAJOR spelling blunder as Bernice White reveals shock new job https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-viewers-spot-major-spelling-blunder-as-bernice-white-reveals-shock-new-job/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-viewers-spot-major-spelling-blunder-as-bernice-white-reveals-shock-new-job/#respond Tue, 04 Jul 2017 00:44:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-viewers-spot-major-spelling-blunder-as-bernice-white-reveals-shock-new-job/

Despite the ITV episode featuring huge developments in Rhona Goskirk’s (played by Zoe Heny) rape storyline and Emma Barton (Gillian Kearney) being rumbled by Laurel Potts (Charlotte Bellamy), fans flocked to social media to discuss Bernice’s (Samantha Giles) new career path.

She had excitedly revealed to Kerry Wyatt (Laura Norton) and Dan Spencer (Liam Fox) that she had trained as a couples counsellor and proudly showed off her certificate to them.

But the pair found her big news laughable and were less than impressed as Kerry asked her: “Who does that belong to?”

“Me, I’m now Bernice White DIP-C-C!” Bernice replied.

“Well I guess you know how not to do it husband wise, you’ve had old ones, gay ones…,” quipped Kerry.

But viewers couldn’t help but point out the very noticeable spelling mistake that featured on the new diploma which read “couples counsolling”, rather than “couples counselling”.

One person wrote on social media: “@emmerdale who spelt the word ‘counsolling’ on Bernice’s certificate? #counselling #emmerdale.”

“Bernice’s diploma is spelled wrong – it’s counselling not counsolling #emmerdale,” noted another, while a third commented: “@emmerdale Spell check on Counselling #Emmerdale.”

Others were simply too amused by Bernice’s new career and found the thougth of her giving advice to couples hilarious.

One fan wrote on Twitter: “Don’t counsel people you know Bernice – it’ll never work #Emmerdale.”

“Nicola’s reaction sums up everyone’s reaction to Bernice and her marriage guidance. #Emmerdale,” said another person.

Emmerdale continues tonight on ITV at 7pm.

These are the winning words from every National Spelling Bee since 1925 https://briefnews.eu/these-are-the-winning-words-from-every-national-spelling-bee-since-1925/ https://briefnews.eu/these-are-the-winning-words-from-every-national-spelling-bee-since-1925/#respond Thu, 01 Jun 2017 00:31:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/these-are-the-winning-words-from-every-national-spelling-bee-since-1925/ 1978 spelling beeAP

The 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee kicked off on Wednesday with nearly 300 of young spellers from around the country gunning for a $ 40,000 top prize.

The field of 291 children will be whittled down to one champion at Thursday’s final in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

Since the inaugural competition in 1925, the words featured in the bee have become increasingly more difficult and obscure, requiring participants to have a commanding knowledge of root words, etymology, and world languages.

Scripps’s list of “winning words” from previous competitions gives a glimpse at this evolution. Relatively simple words such as “knack,” “therapy,” and “initials” dominated earlier installments of the spelling bee, while modern-day champions have had to tackle humdingers like “feuilleton,” “nunatak,” and “gesellschaft.”

The shift in difficulty can be partly attributed to ESPN’s coverage of the bee, which has attracted more students to the competition, Scripps spokeswoman Valerie Miller said. This is the 24th year ESPN will air the spelling bee.

But the biggest reason is simply that the spellers have gotten better.

“Words are more difficult now because the skills of the students also have expanded,” Miller told Business Insider. “These are the best of the best spellers, and the words they get in the national finals should be the greatest challenge.”

Here are some of the championship-clinching words from previous spelling bees:

1925 — gladiolus

AP

The championship word from the inaugural National Spelling Bee in 1925 was “gladiolus,” a flowering plant in the iris family.

Eleven-year-old Frank Neuhauser of Kentucky correctly spelled it to take home the top prize — $ 500 in gold pieces and a trip to the White House.

When he returned to Louisville, crowds greeted him with a ticker-tape parade and bouquets of aptly chosen gladiolus flowers, according to The Washington Post’s obituary of Neuhauser, who died in 2011.

The New York Times called Neuhauser’s winning word “a cakewalk by modern standards” that “harks back to simpler times.”

In the above photo, sixth-place finisher Patrick Kelly poses with President Calvin Coolidge.

1936 — eczema

Illinois Daily Newspaper Collections

Jean Trowbridge of Iowa correctly spelled “eczema” — a skin condition — to clinch the 1936 spelling bee. She also had to correctly spell “predilection,” which another finalist had missed.

Three decades later, “eczema” would resurface as the winning word at the 1965 bee.

1960 — eudaemonic

AP

Henry Feldman of Tennessee correctly spelled “eudaemonic” to win the 1960 spelling bee. “Eudaemonic” means “producing happiness.”
