]]>As advances in autonomous technology have placed a huge number of self-driving machines on our roads and sidewalks, a side hustle has materialized in recent years: robot-babysitting. In Phoenix,
The unusual nature of the job lends it some cachet, despite the mundane nature of the work itself. (Job requirements posted by the driverless-car start-up Cruise Automation include: “Able to drive or spend time sitting in a car for six to eight hours a day.”) “I’ll tell my grandkids someday!” Reeves told me. The pay is good, too. Starship Technologies starts its robot handlers at $ 15 an hour, and Cruise pays $ 23 an hour, more than double California’s minimum wage of $ 11. Still, many of these above-minimum-wage jobs aren’t likely to be around for too much longer.
Broadly speaking, robot-babysitting jobs fall under the umbrella of careers in automation, which include maintenance, engineering, and programming. The demand for people with this skill set is considerable, with an expected 20 million to 50 million new jobs expected in this category by 2030, according to the McKinsey Global Institute. In the year that ended in June 2018, the number of postings on Indeed.com’s recruitment boards advertising positions in automation had almost tripled since the year ending in June 2016.
Automation workers include computer scientists, IT workers, and administrators. “Those people are in scarcity, and there’s an extreme demand,” Mike Ramsey, a research director at Gartner, said. But they also include less skilled workers—college students, like Reeves, or others without a degree. As autonomous technology gets more sophisticated, Ramsey expects to see a bifurcation of demand for these robot-keepers. Even as demand increases more technical roles—AI analysts, systems testers, and vehicle technicians—advances in tech and loosening legislation will lessen the need for blue-collar robot roles, like Reeves’ job with Starship Technologies. “We are in this squishy period where the human has to be heavily involved in testing, and that is likely to end,” Ramsey said.
What interacting with robots might reveal about human nature
In some cases, companies have already managed to get rid of their robot babysitters. Over the last year, a 34-year-old entrepreneur named David Rodriguez spent hundreds of hours following a machine called the KiwiBot around UC Berkeley’s campus while it delivered Soylent, Chipotle, and Red Bull to students.
Created in 2017 by a group of Colombian entrepreneurs at Launch, an accelerator program based at Berkeley, the KiwiBot exhibits Pixar-like sensibilities. To retrieve orders, the app prompts students to give the robot a thumbs-up or a wave; the bot’s digital eyes will wink or roll depending on its mood. Rodriguez, who heads business development for the start-up, was tasked, early on, with monitoring the KiwiBot for problems—even carrying it, should the motors fail. Since April 2018, though, the KiwiBot has been largely babysitter-free, and the majority of human interactions involve technical checks and loading food into the bot. To eliminate that grunt work, the team is developing a restaurant robot to collect and load orders—which could happen as soon as 2019. However, Rodriguez assured me that his staff won’t be out of work. Everyone holds dual roles in the company; greater bot autonomy just means employees will shift their focus to accounting, engineering, and design.
Some observers note that certain kinds of robot-babysitting—the kind that is monotonous and doesn’t require much education—can make for thankless work. The safety drivers who sit in self-driving cars have described their roles as “exhausting” and “demanding,” and many told me about the constant pressure to stay hyper-alert at all times. “It’s incredibly hard to sit in a chair and stare at a computer without doing anything for eight hours,” Ramsey said. “But you do not need a Ph.D. to do it.” In March 2018, the field of robot babysitting took a beating when a self-driving Uber in Tempe, Arizona, hit a 49-year-old named Elaine Herzberg. Dashcam footage showed that Rafaela Vasquez, the car’s safety driver, had not been looking at the road when the accident occurred. Investigators are deciding if Vasquez will face manslaughter charges.
Following the accident, a number of executives began pushing to shelve the program altogether, according to the New York Times. Uber suspended all its self-driving tests in the United States, and many of its 400-plus test drivers had to scramble for work. In May, it laid off all Arizona safety drivers, followed by more layoffs in July in Pittsburgh and San Francisco, which dropped Uber’s total test-driver pool to about 55 people. Despite this, Uber said testing will resume this summer and is actively recruiting self-driving-truck drivers and autonomous-vehicle engineers. “Our team remains committed to building safe self-driving technology, and we look forward to returning to public roads in the coming months,” said an Uber spokeswoman.
Driverless Cars Are Like Elevators
Robot babysitting was the first job that Jordan Zagerman, 21, ever held. In 2017, while completing an associate’s degree at San Francisco State University, he followed a delivery robot around San Francisco’s Parkmerced neighborhood, supplying condoms, chips, and soda on demand on behalf of a company called Dispatch. He also managed Dispatch’s Snapchat account and designed branded sweatshirts. Then, after four weeks, came the “it’s not you, it’s me” email. “Over the weeks, people were progressively less surprised with the robot,” he said. “Every robot handler was let go.” The experience convinced Zagerman that he needed to better prepare himself for the future. That fall, he moved to Philadelphia to start a bachelors degree in user-experience design at Drexel University; when he graduates, he hopes to return to Silicon Valley, but this time for a more white-collar, technical position. “I left,” he told me, “to make sure I wouldn’t get phased out with autonomy.”
McKinsey estimates 10 million to 800 million jobs globally could be lost to automation by 2030. In the long term, it’s inevitable that robot-babysitting gigs will go the way of elevator operators and lamplighters. But they’ll also birth new robot-related roles. “A huge number of jobs will be created as autonomous vehicles are loosed into the environment,” Ramsey said. In 2016, Bosch started training students from Schoolcraft College, a community college in Michigan, in autonomous-vehicle repair; Toyota has trained students in maintenance as well. “We might even see a return to low-level jobs where people come and fuel the car for you,” Ramsey said. “Until we can wirelessly charge, someone needs to refuel them.” The hardest-to-automate industries, as it happens, are the ones that require looking after humans: childcare, education, health-care aides. Robot babysitters might feel like they have scored the job of the future. But in fact, real babysitters might be better positioned.

Any day that we can drive a new Porsche is a good day, although we admit we especially enjoy examples packed to the rain rails with performance-enhancing goodies. There are many such items on the German company’s famously long list of extras, including active suspension systems, carbon-ceramic brake rotors, chest-thumping exhaust systems, aggressive wheel-and-tire combos, and Sport Chrono packages with their dash-mounted lap timers and chassis tweaks. Of course, Porsche’s more sybaritic extras are nice, too, such as massaging seats, megawatt sound systems, and leather-coated iterations of everything from the headliner to the individual vanes of the air vents. DNA-based robots promise all kinds of microscopic machinery, but there’s a major obstacle: they’re slow. Existing designs that use biochemical processes for movement can take hours to shuffle molecules around, which makes them utterly impractical for anything time sensitive. That might not a hurdle for much longer. Scientists have developed a DNA nanorobot (specifically, an arm) that uses electric fields to move a whopping 100,000 times faster than previous examples, even though it’s based on straightforward concepts.
You see, DNA molecules have negative charges as a matter of course. Researchers found that they could quickly and accurately move the arm by subjecting it to electrical pulses that tug the arm in the right direction. You can spin the arm, move it to another position or even have it apply force, all within milliseconds.
You wouldn’t necessarily see small numbers of these gene-based robots in action. Rather, you’d see “millions” of them working in tandem as part of nanofactories. They could piece together complex molecules (say, for medicine), or identify substances at an extremely small level. And in many ways, the new approach makes DNA nanorobots practical. Whenever technology like this is ready for prime time, it could be used for on-the-fly tasks where you just can’t afford to wait.

]]>Wireless networks already have to deal with increasingly crowded waves, and that’s only going to get worse when 5G rolls around. Any boost to the signal could lead to a big jump in performance, especially when you’re using very high frequencies that are more prone to interference. But how do you provide that boost? Researchers have an idea: ‘hover’ the antenna. They’ve developed millimeter wave antenna arrays that are almost entirely separated from the substrate you’d usually mount them on, preventing that substrate from weakening the signal like it does with conventional antennas.
They’ll also amplify the signal beyond that: new 3D printing techniques promise “lens” structures that focus and boost whatever signal comes out of the array.
The technology is still young, and there’s no mention of if or when it’ll come to market. However, it could be crucial to 5G and the next wave of broadband. It’ll be particularly vital for cellphones in cities, where a strong signal is crucial to overcoming crowded airspace, but it could also be helpful for bringing gigabit internet access to more homes. Instead of wiring whole neighborhoods with expensive and hard-to-deploy fiber optic lines, you could use these antennas to deliver fixed wireless with relatively little effort.

President Trump said he wants to pick up the pace on “dramatic tax cuts and tax reform” in the wake of the storms that have battered to the US in recent weeks.
“I think now with what’s happened with the hurricane, I’m going to ask for a speedup. I wanted a speedup anyway, but now we need it even more so,” he declared at a cabinet meeting on Saturday.
But there are a few serious hurdles standing in the way of passing tax reform right now, whatever the pace.
The biggest obstacle may be time: The House and Senate are scheduled to be in joint session for less than 50 days for the rest of the year.
Here are five of the major problems facing Congress in the near term that will make it hard to satisfy Trump’s call for a speedy execution of tax reform this year:
1. A tax reform plan requires a 2018 budget resolution. Back in July, House Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady said, “Clearly, no budget, no tax reform.” Republicans have still not passed a budget for fiscal year 2018, and they need that budget in order to pass tax reform through the reconciliation process. (Reconciliation allows the Senate to pass a tax bill by 50 votes, but only if the bill doesn’t increase deficits after 10 years.) Without a budget baseline, there’s no way to evaluate the fiscal effects of changes in the tax code.
2. A 2018 budget requires a tax reform plan. Some House Republicans are complaining that they don’t have enough details about the GOP’s tax reform plan to properly shape a budget for 2018. Rep. Dave Brat of Virginia, one of the leaders of the conservative Freedom Caucus, recently said: “It’s very hard to hard to vote on a budget resolution, which has as its sole objective to move tax reform, when you don’t know what tax reform looks like. … There’s problems across the whole conference, from moderates to fiscal conservatives.” At this point, it’s not even clear where a detailed tax plan will come from — the tax-writing committees in Congress or the “Big Six” negotiators — or when.
3. Hurricane relief will take time — and money. Congress will almost certainly have to deal with the economic effects of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and possibly Hurricane Jose. Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida said Monday that the $ 15 billion in FEMA funding passed last week will last just a few weeks, and that more funds will needed soon.
4. Congress still has some must-pass items on its plate. Lawmakers must reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration and the Children’s Health Insurance Program by the end of the month. Neither one of these is particularly controversial, but either or both could get bogged down if Congress attaches unrelated items to the reauthorization bills — possibly including Obamacare stabilization measures.
5. December 8 gets closer every day. Trump struck a deal with Democrats last week to fund the government and raise the debt ceiling, but only for three months. With hurricane relief out of the way and Congress eager to head home for the holidays, fiscal hawks may feel empowered to take a stand against deficit spending, sparking a new round of budget battles with potentially serious economic repercussions.
Some skeptics don’t expect to see any serious tax reform this year, due to the limits imposed by both the calendar and the turmoil roiling the Republican Party. The headline on Albert Hunt’s opinion piece at Bloomberg Monday expresses those doubts bluntly: “Don’t Expect Trump and Congress to Do Anything.”
But Judd Gregg, the Republican former governor and senator from New Hampshire, points to one big reason Congress may still find a way to overcome the many obstacles complicating tax reform:
“It is called political survival. The passage of a true, significant tax reform bill is the last, best hope for this Republican Congress and this unusual President to claim they should continue to be entrusted with our nation’s well-being. Political survival trumps (no pun intended) all other hurdles, procedural and substantive. A way will be found to get to tax reform. You can bet your re-election on it — if you are a Republican.”

Earlier this year, Jeep announced the Trackhawk, a Grand Cherokee with Goliath-level power arriving to seek and destroy any utility vehicles that have ambitions of going fast. It’s an incredible vehicle in its own right, particularly at the price point. But there’s already been a Goliath of SUVs for years now: the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and the new 2019 model has arrived to reestablish its place in the pecking order. READ MORE ››

Normally, smashing a transportation record is something to celebrate. This time, however, it’s not necessarily worth cheering. Sovcomflot’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker Christophe de Margerie has become the first merchant ship to cross the Northern Sea Route without an icebreaker clearing its path. The vessel, which can plow through ice up to 6.9 feet thick all by itself, completed a trip from Norway to South Korea in a record-setting 6.5 days by keeping up speeds (an average of 14 knots) that would have been impractical with the usual escort. That’s despite ice as thick as 3.9 feet. So what’s so bad? Unfortunately, it’s as much an indication of the effect of global warming as it is technological progress.
As the BBC points out, Arctic sea ice levels have declined over the past 30 years — and Sovcomflot doesn’t expect the ice to thicken to a significant degree over the useful lifespan of the Christophe de Margerie and its eventual 14 companion ships. Environmental groups like Seas at Risk suspect that this journey is only possible because climate change has made it easier for ships to cross in the first place.
And while this does mean that crucial LNG supplies can reach other countries at virtually any time of the year, the increased ship traffic could exacerbate environmental issues. Never mind the risk of a spill — the ships traveling the Northern Sea Route may use dirtier fuels that could hurt ice in the region and accelerate melting. These cutting-edge ships may save time, but it might be at a steep price.

Postmates’ on-demand alcohol service is now available well beyond California’s borders. On top of an expansion to Miami in May, the internet delivery mainstay is now making its Drinks feature available in New York City (in Brooklyn and Manhattan) as well as Austin, Dallas and Houston. As before, the aim is to bring neighborhood stores’ booze to your door in 25 minutes or less. You’ll have to be in the mood for certain drinks depending on where you live, though. The NYC service focuses on wine and spirits, while the Texas offerings revolve around beers.
The Drinks service is best-suited to pricier orders: you’ll need to pay a $ 3 delivery for orders under $ 30. Postmates is waiving that fee for the next month (as of this writing), though, so it may be worth trying if you’re craving an amber ale or bourbon on a hot summer night. The main catch right now is simply availability — it’s far from a nationwide service at the moment (Postmates counts 13 cities in total). Given the rapid expansion, however, you might not have to wait long to see whether it’s any better than existing delivery options in your area.

The war over speedier LTE data is heating up in a big, big way. T-Mobile has launched LTE-U (that is, LTE riding on unlicensed frequencies) in parts of a handful of cities, including T-Mobile’s home turf in Bellevue as well as Brooklyn, Dearborn, Las Vegas, Richardson and Simi Valley. If you have a compatible device (just the Galaxy S8 for now), it’ll take advantage of public 5GHz wireless to give your service a boost. And if that’s not fast enough, both T-Mobile and AT&T are offering a peek at the next wave of not-quite-5G speeds.
Both carriers have announced that they’re field-testing LTE-LAA (LTE License Assisted Access) that promises hundreds of megabits per second by combining open 5GHz wireless with licensed airwaves. In practice, that could deliver performance better than your internet connection at home. AT&T’s San Francisco test managed a brisk 650Mbps, while T-Mobile’s Los Angeles experiment has reached an even quicker 741Mbps.
It’ll likely be a while before you see LAA in real life. Remember, AT&T’s existing faux 5G service is barely up and running — it’s going to take longer before a faster technology is ready for American networks. And that’s not including the need for manufacturers to hop aboard. Still, both tests are promising. Just as sped-up 3G made it easier to wait for LTE rollouts several years ago, LTE-LAA could give you a taste of 5G-like speeds while you wait for true 5G to reach your city.
