T-Mobile won the lion’s share of spectrum licenses in the latest Federal Communications Commission auction, helping it fill rural network gaps that evoked comparisons to Swiss cheese. T-Mobile’s winning bids totaled $ 304.3 million, letting it obtain 7,156 licenses out of 7,872 that were sold, the FCC announced yesterday.

T-Mobile’s licenses are spread across 2,724 counties (out of 3,143 total in the US). The second-highest bidder in dollar terms was PTI Pacifica, which spent $ 17.7 million on nine licenses in five counties. “With most of the available spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band located in rural areas, this auction provides vital spectrum resources to support wireless services in rural communities,” the FCC said.

The auction provided up to three blocks of spectrum, totaling 117.5MHz in each county. In terms of the number of licenses won, the second-place finisher was the North American Catholic Educational Programming Fund. Its winning bids totaled $ 7.8 million and cover 107 licenses in 84 counties.

Bridget Regan (Jane the Virgin) and Josh Hartnett (Penny Dreadful) are set as the leads in a Southern Gothic mystery series that will air on Spectrum before getting a linear run on Paramount Network.

Penned by Rodes Fishburne (Blood & Oil) and tentatively titled Paradise Lost, the series follows Frances, a psychiatrist (Regan) who moves with her family from California to her husband’s (Hartnett) hometown in Mississippi only to uncover shameful secrets that irrevocably change the lives of everyone involved.

Additional casting for the 10-episode series includes Barbara Hershey (Once Upon a Time), Nick Nolte (Graves), Gail Bean (Snowfall), Danielle Deadwyler (The Haves and the Have Nots) and Shane McRae (Sneaky Pete).

Fishburne and fellow writer/executive producer Arika Lisanne Mittman (Dexter) will serve as co-showrunners. John Lee Hancock, David Kanter, Jeff Okin and Romeo Tirone are also EPs.

At Paramount Network, Paradise Lost will join a scripted roster that includes Yellowstone (Season 2 premieres Wednesday, June 19) and the upcoming Darren Star series, Emily in Paris. Spectrum, meanwhile, is of course the home to the Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba-led Bad Boys spinoff, L.A’s Finest.

L.A.’s Finest will report for duty this spring. Cable provider Spectrum has announced that the Bad Boys spinoff will launch ad-free on Monday, May 13 via Spectrum On Demand, beginning with the first three installments; subsequent episodes will be released weekly.

The logline for the 13-episode offshoot reads as follows:

The one-hour series follows Syd Burnett (Gabrielle Union), last seen in Miami taking down a drug cartel, who has seemingly left her complicated past behind to become an LAPD detective. Paired with a new partner, Nancy McKenna (Jessica Alba), a working mom with an equally complex history, Syd is forced to confront how her unapologetic lifestyle may be masking a greater personal secret. Taking on the most dangerous criminals in Los Angeles while skirting the rules, and speed limits, Syd and Nancy become a force to be reckoned with – on the streets, and in each other’s lives.

Rounding out the cast are Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) as Ben Walker, Duane Martin (The New Edition Story) as Ben Baines, Ryan McPartlin (Chuck) as Patrick McKenna, Sophie Reynolds (Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything) as Isabel “Izzy” McKenna and Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) as Joseph Vaughn.

Union and Alba serve as executive producers on L.A.’s Finest, alongside Bad Boys franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Additional EPs include Jonathan Littman (CSI), KristieAnne Reed (Lucifer), Brandon Margolis (The Blacklist), Brandon Sonnier (The Blacklist), Pam Veasey (CSI: NY), Doug Belgrad (Peter Rabbit), Jeff Gaspin (To Tell the Truth), Jeff Morrone (Atomic Blonde) and Anton Cropper (Suits), who also directed the pilot.

L.A.’s Finest marks the first original series for Spectrum. Additional upcoming projects include the anthology series Manhunt (previously on Discovery Channel) and street-racing drama Curfew.

Larger oddly-shaped blocks twist and rotate in unexpected ways, causing chaos as they interact with surrounding blocks.

In separate deals coming just after this year’s Mobile World Congress, United States and European Union officials have reached agreements to hasten the allocation of radio spectrum for next-generation 5G wireless networks, Reuters reports. Both governments were spurred to action by the threat of becoming internationally non-competitive, as representatives moved faster than might have been imagined only a week earlier.

In the United States, Congressmen representing the Republican and Democratic sides of both the House and Senate said that they have agreed on a bill that lets the FCC receive upfront payments from 5G spectrum bidders, resolving an issue FCC Chairman Ajit Pai identified earlier this week, and enabling auctions of 5G radio spectrum to go forward. The bill also includes provisions to identify additional 5G spectrum and reduce bureaucracy in the infrastructure building process. A vote in the House is expected on Tuesday, March 6.

When passed, the bill will enable the FCC to proceed with planned auctions of 28GHz and 24GHz millimeter wave spectrum, which were tentatively scheduled for November pending Congressional action. Pai suggested that the auctions would be delayed if Congress failed to act by May 13, but the rapid Congressional response suggests that the U.S. government is impressively ready to expedite 5G when asked. The FCC’s next move will likely be to open up 3.7-4.2MHz midband spectrum, another key 5G enabler.

In Europe, lawmakers representing European Union countries agreed late last night to free up 5G radio frequencies for a 20-year time period. While Reuters reports that a telecommunications industry lobbying group was seeking at least a 25-year timeframe, the deal enables 5G spectrum to become available throughout the EU by 2020.

Similar to the U.S., European countries are focusing on 3.6GHz midband and 26GHz millimeter wave spectrum bands for 5G. The 3.6GHz spectrum will likely prove better-suited to handheld devices, as its radio signals are not as position-sensitive, while the 26GHz spectrum can more easily be used in so-called “fixed 5G” hardware designed to be installed and used in one place.

Both of the deals are expected to hasten the arrival of autonomous, connected cars, smart cities, fully wireless virtual reality, and ultra high-speed mobile internet services. In the United States, AT&T and Verizon have both committed to 5G rollouts later this year, while European carriers have made only tentative steps towards rolling out 5G, citing regulatory and financial uncertainties — a situation likely to improve with the latest agreements.

Faith follows a young priest back to a home where an apparent case of demonic possession left few alive a year before. Investigating these past events will dredge up horrific memories and even more unsettling beings, though, testing players’ bravery through the horror title’s incredible use of rotoscope, Spectrum-like visuals, and frightening sound.

Players will comb through the house where the demonic possession supposedly occurred and the nearby grounds, dealing with periodic monstrous appearances with a quick flick of the cross. Well, some of them. There are far more powerful presences that lurk nearby – disturbing beasts that are made all the more discomforting by the game’s rotoscope animation. The cross may not be enough for some of these creatures, requiring the player dig deep for answers in order to survive their presence.

Faith makes good use of its limited visuals to frighten the player, creating a sense that things never look quite right. Like The Last Door, the minimalist look creates this sense that what you are looking at is not quite right, allowing player imagination to give it a deeper dread. However, it’s the sound and music that makes this game crawl under the skin, using distorted sound and muffled voice to make the senses beg to be free of this nightmare we willing subject ourselves to.

It may appear simple, but Faith hides some incredible scares (without relying on jumps) for horror fans, taking them down many creepy story paths. It’s also inexcusable not to play since you can pay whatever you like for it.

Eight years ago, Google was on top of the world. People across the political spectrum saw the search giant as a symbol of high-tech innovation. During the just-completed 2008 presidential campaign cycle, candidates as diverse as Ron Paul, John McCain, and Barack Obama had all made pilgrimages to Google’s Mountain View headquarters to burnish their reputations for tech savvy.

Even better, Google soon had a close relationship to the newly elected president, Barack Obama. “Google was riding high on the fact that Eric Schmidt was campaigning for Obama,” said Siva Vaidhyanathan, a media studies professor at the University of Virginia and a longtime Google critic. “There was a lot of attention paid in the press to the fact that Googlers were starting to work in the White House.”

With so many Googlers in government, Google had an outsized influence on policymaking during the Obama years. But today, Google is in a different situation. Most obviously, Schmidt worked hard to get Hillary Clinton elected president, and Clinton lost.
