ABC will spread some much-needed holiday cheer in November and December, starting with a third installment of its Disney Family Singalong series.

The Disney Holiday Singalong, airing Monday, Nov. 30 at 8/7c, will once again feature celebrities putting their own spins on classic Disney tunes. Previous editions of the special aired in April (watch performances) and May (watch performances) of this year, offering some socially distanced entertainment at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

The singalong’s first outing brought in north of 10.4 million total viewers and a 2.6 demo rating, while the second installment did about half those numbers.

ABC’s end-of-year lineup also includes holiday episodes of The Goldbergs, black-ish and General Hospital, along with some beloved films (including the broadcast TV debut of The Greatest Showman). Charlie Brown and New ‘Peanuts’ Specials Are Coming to Apple https://briefnews.eu/charlie-brown-and-new-peanuts-specials-are-coming-to-apple/ https://briefnews.eu/charlie-brown-and-new-peanuts-specials-are-coming-to-apple/#respond Sun, 16 Dec 2018 01:44:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/charlie-brown-and-new-peanuts-specials-are-coming-to-apple/ new peanuts specials

Fire up the Vince Guaraldi music: new Peanuts specials and series are headed to Apple. Charlie Brown, Snoopy and all the other giant-headed children will be headed to Apple’s upcoming streaming service. New specials include short-form STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) content, featuring Snoopy in space.

According to Deadline, Apple has signed a deal with DHX Media to produce new Peanuts content, including new series, specials and shorts inspired by the comic strip created by Charles M. Schulz back in 1950. In the decades since their funny pages inception, Charlie Brown and the gang have evolved to star in TV specials, movies, and even plays. As recently as 2015, the characters appeared in their own feature film, The Peanuts Movie.

The Peanuts Movie

The new specials will have an educational bent, including “original short-form STEM content that will be exclusive to Apple, featuring astronaut Snoopy.” This is yet another big addition to Apple’s constantly-growing original content. For almost the entire year, news has been trickling in about new original programs intended for Apple’s upcoming streaming service. Titles include The Morning Show, starring Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, Reese Witherspoon, and more; a thriller from M. Night Shyamalan; an “innovative drama” from La La Land director Damien Chazelle; Are You Sleeping, with Octavia Spencer as a podcaster who reopens a cold murder case;  Little America, an immigrant-centric show from the writers of The Big Sick; an Amazing Stories reboot, and many more.

Most of the titles announced so far seem to be geared toward adult viewers, but the Peanuts content is clearly going to be more family friendly. Peanuts remains iconic, and the prospect of new material will no doubt appeal to audiences of every age. I have a soft spot for the characters myself. While I can’t say I ever paid much attention to the comic strip when it was running, I was a big fan of two particular Peanuts specials – the Halloween-themed It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, and A Charlie Brown Christmas, featuring a killer jazz score from Vince Guaraldi. As far as I’m concerned, no other currently existing Peanuts specials can measure up to these particular titles. Maybe the new Apple content will change that.

The plan – as of now – is for the Apple streaming service to be free for anyone using an Apple device – which is a pretty sweet deal, all things considered. There’s no concrete date yet, but rumor has it the Apple streaming service will launch sometime in 2019.

10 Deliciously Bad Holiday TV Specials and Movies https://briefnews.eu/10-deliciously-bad-holiday-tv-specials-and-movies/ https://briefnews.eu/10-deliciously-bad-holiday-tv-specials-and-movies/#respond Tue, 26 Dec 2017 03:33:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/10-deliciously-bad-holiday-tv-specials-and-movies/ star wars holiday special

With the sleigh bells ringing, the snow falling, and the shoppers out in full force…guess what? It is Holiday Movie Season, everybody! And though that is the signal for classics like It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street and every single version of A Christmas Carol to flood your TV schedules and streaming networks, I tend to notice a whole other crop of entertainment pop up – and they’re delightfully terrible, in every way you can imagine.

Let’s put the classics in perspective. Here are a list of Holiday specials and low budget movies that will make you think twice about making fun of your family for loving A Christmas Story (or any seasonal flick you tend to find supremely cheesy or overrated). These selections are sure to turn your head in directions it never would have before and make your eyes roll all the way to the North Pole and back. These are the best of the worst that the Holiday’s have to offer. So grab your favorite ugly sweater, and a cup of hot cocoa and let’s see what piles of misfortune we have to unwrap!

Babes in Toyland (December 19, 1986) Shown: Drew Barrymore

Babes in Toyland (1986)

Whenever December 25th gets just a little bit closer, there’s this wonderful sparkly feeling that comes from the pit of my stomach – and that means there’s a reason to indulge in the Holiday monstrosity that is the ’80s Babes in Toyland, starring Drew Barrymore, Keanu Reeves, and the immortal Pat Morita. It tells the story of Lisa (Barrymore), a little girl from Cincinnati, who (after a car accident during a blizzard) gets sent to the magical Toyland. There she meets plenty of wacky individuals, aims to save a Romeo and Juliet style romance, and tries to defeat an evil dude (with pointlessly long finger nails) who lives in a bowling ball. Literally.

Regardless of the version, I’ve never been a Babes in Toyland person. The premise is lackluster at best, and it seems more like a  rip-off of The Nutcracker than anything else. But when speaking specifically about the ’86 adaptation, even with all the nostalgia I have for the film, it’s hard to ignore how trashy the production value is. The Toyland setting looks so small and you can clearly tell it is a sound stage. You can practically smell how dirty and cheap the costumes are. Mix that in with the citizens of the fantasy town (especially Mary’s mother) who are just plain rude or too stupid to earn our compassion. Between the low budget special effects and the awkward acting, this version is deliciously bad simply because there seems to be no effort put forth whatsoever.

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Christmas Special

Cash grab Holiday specials are awful – especially when they star a sidekick robot singing Christmas songs in the most demonic way possible. Let me introduce you to Alpha’s Magic Christmas, aka The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Christmas Special. This is a perfect example of a franchise milking every last drop it can out of its audience (or their parents) and not giving a hoot whether it is of any sort of quality. There’s no real plot, not a bit of that Christmas charm, and – wait for it – barely any Power Rangers. That’s right, the thing you were hoping would be all up in this special is downgraded to a cameo at best. Because obviously, kids only watched the show for Alpha. Those teenagers with attitude were only but the opening act for the real star of the show!

Sure, this snore fest has its fans, but even in my prime Power Rangers phase, this one always left me cold. I didn’t want to see Alpha and the Gap Kids choir sing a bunch of Holiday classics – no, I wanted Zack, Billy, Trini, Kimberly, Tommy and Jason to decorate a Christmas tree, while also seeing Bulk and Skull do a Two-Man show version of A Christmas Carol, narrated by Ernie. Instead what we get is Alpha complaining about being depressed on Christmas Eve, Zordon telling Alpha the Power Rangers are on a “special mission” to help Santa (sure they are, Zordy), and Alpha kidnapping a bunch of random kids to do creepy arts and crafts. But if this sounds like a way for you to spend a half hour of your time during the holidays, by all means go for it. Personally, I have better Power Rangers: Wild Force episodes to marathon.

Santa Claus Conquers The Martians (1964)

Christmas is a time of giving, love…and aliens!? Well, that is certainly the case with Santa Claus Conquers The Martians. The plot surrounds a Martian family who fears that their children are watching too much human TV. In their time of need, they look to the guidance of Chochem, who advises them that the structured way that they raise their kids is the problem (including having a machine feed information into their brains – oh, the irony) and that they must put a stop to this or else the martian children will never know how to be free thinking individuals. The solution? Allow the martians to experience the concept of “fun”, and somehow this results in Santa Claus getting kidnapped and brought to outer space (along with two Earth kids).

If this sounds like an abomination of cinematic creation, that’s because it is! But I think what makes Santa Claus Conquers The Martians a “classic” to many of its viewers is how proud it is of its choices. From the use of the kind of costumes that would give Edith Head a heart attack, plot lines that don’t make much sense, and the inclusion of a “tickle ray” (I’m not kidding), this movie is committed to its premise and it’s borderline precious to watch.

The Twelve Days of Christmas (1993)

If you think the perfect Christmas entertainment involves Phil Hartman and Tale Spin character design rip-offs, than The Twelve Days of Christmas might just be made for you…and you alone. This 1993 NBC special tells the story (narrated by the famous Partridge in the Pear Tree) of Sir Carolboomer, who wants to impress Princess Silverbell by granting her list of twelve Christmas wishes. The catch? The princess of this story is incredibly melancholy, and will only marry someone if they make her laugh. And when the person delivering these gifts isn’t Carolboomer, but his silly, nerdy servant Hollyberry (Hartman), you can see where this is going.

Though looking fairly innocent enough on paper, The Twelve Days of Christmas suffers from all the worst things a ’90s made Christmas special can have: lame pop culture references, lots of terrible puns, and no true acknowledgement as to why this story needed to be told with animated humanoid bears as opposed to humans (because seriously movie, why does it have to be bears?!) And even though the story ends with a well meaning moral that is cute on the surface, the total experience is a test in any sort of patience, even for the youngest of viewers.

The Star Wars Holiday Special

In a galaxy far, far away, there was this lovely steaming pile of TV special garbage. This misfire within the Star Wars franchise has grown in its legendary status over the years, and for good reason: it features a fictional holiday (Life Day), Wookiees speaking with no subtitles for long periods of screen time, and the closest equivalent to galactic porn we’ll ever see in a Star Wars related product. It is so terrible that Lucasfilm has never even given it a home video release, not even as a special feature in a larger package of some kind. Truly, it is that bad.

Some of you may want to know what this thing is about, but to be honest with y’all, even after seeing this thing multiple times, I’m still not sure. What sticks out are the real head scratching elements, like the random cooking show starring a drag queen robot (played by Harvey Korman), a microscopic circus that entertains the Wookiee kid for way too long, Mark Hamill’s impression of a Ken Doll, or Carrie Fisher’s look of not caring what the heck she’s doing. And those are just only scratching the surface of the real weird stuff. But at the end of the day, even with an awesome cameo by Bea Arthur, the Force certainly isn’t with the Star Wars Holiday Special, and it never will be.

–

Lexus can’t lean on motorsports heritage to sell its F-branded performance cars, but now that 10 years have passed since the first one went on sale, it is marking the occasion with RC F and GS F anniversary editions. Consider them a tribute to naturally aspirated V-8s and rear-wheel drive.

–

The matte-gray RC F and GS F pictured here will be sold as the F 10th Anniversary in Japan and limited to 500 total, and they celebrate all the big-bore, fat-tired Lexus models since the first IS F launched in 2007. That compact sedan surprised everyone, and despite never seriously challenging the BMW M3 or Mercedes C63 AMG during its seven-year model run, the IS F proved Lexus could unbutton its collar and cut loose.

–

Lexus GS F Special 10th Anniversary Edition

–

The GS F comes with gloss-black wheels, blue brake calipers, and a carbon-fiber body kit (rear valance, decklid, and chin spoiler). Inside, Lexus chose a blueberry Toaster Strudel theme: the blue leather seats feature a thick, white stripe, while the blue steering wheel’s 12-o’clock rim marking also is white. More blue leather adorns the shifter, the dash pad, and the rear-seat headrests and bolsters. The seatbelts are blue, as is the microsuede that wraps the instrument panel. That same material (in black) covers the armrests and a mesmerizing headliner, which has a similar origami-inspired pattern to the one found in the 2018 LS.

–

The RC F largely follows suit, although its mix of matte-painted and glossy carbon-fiber panels gives it a cobbled-together appearance. The limited-edition coupe keeps the blue, white, and black colors inside, but unlike in the GS F, the rear seat and associated seatbelts are entirely black. Both RC F and GS F models receive their own blue woven-carbon-fiber trim patterns.

–

Lexus RC F Special 10th Anniversary Edition

–

While there are no engine mods to either car, Lexus fits upgraded dampers and a titanium exhaust that should render the company’s synthetic Active Sound Control superfluous. When we last tested a GS F, we turned off that feature and let the 467-hp 5.0-liter V-8 sing to the 7300-rpm redline as its Yamaha engineers intended.

–

–

Lexus hasn’t said whether it will import any of the anniversary cars to the United States. But with the industry shifting to turbochargers and all-wheel drive, the real concern is that high-revving F models like these are unlikely to survive the next 10 years.

‘Star Wars: Forces of Destiny’ Trailer: Two ‘Star Wars’ Specials Are Coming to The Disney Channel https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-forces-of-destiny-trailer-two-star-wars-specials-are-coming-to-the-disney-channel/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-forces-of-destiny-trailer-two-star-wars-specials-are-coming-to-the-disney-channel/#respond Fri, 29 Sep 2017 05:45:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-forces-of-destiny-trailer-two-star-wars-specials-are-coming-to-the-disney-channel/ Star Wars Forces of Destiny trailer

Earlier this year, when we compiled the first eight Star Wars: Forces of Destiny short films for you to watch in one place, we heard there would be a new batch of shorts coming later in the year. That time is nearly upon us: a new trailer has been released and promises two 30-minute TV specials coming to the Disney Channel next month, complete with never-before-seen content. Watch the newest trailer below, and refresh your memory about what these shorts are all about.

Star Wars Forces of Destiny trailer

The press release says the specials will include “a total of eight never-before-seen installments” along with compilations of the popular animated shorts that have already been released that feature Rey (Daisy Ridley), Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar), Princess Leia (Shelby Young), Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein), and Padmé Amidala (Catherine Taber). The new shorts will also include characters like “Han Solo, Hera Syndulla, Finn, Maz Kanata and many others,” so Star Wars vets John Boyega, Matt Lanter, and Lupita Nyong’o will be getting in on the voiceover action.

Disney launched Forces of Destiny this summer primarily as a way to shine a light on the female characters in the Star Wars universe, but Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy rightly pointed out that the short films are “for anyone who has been inspired by Leia’s heroism, Rey’s courage, or Ahsoka’s tenacity.” I’ve seen some man-children complaining about this online, but it’s obvious that their feelings are the furthest thing from Disney and Lucasfilm’s thoughts when it comes to these shorts – they’re finally turning their attention to the young girls who often feel underrepresented in major franchises like this, and that’s a really cool thing.

It’s also worth noting that these shorts are all canonical. Like everything else involving Star Wars, they’re run past the Lucasfilm Story Group to ensure the timing and details all make sense in the larger context of the franchise. As Story Group member Carrie Beck previously explained:

“One of the opportunities here was to tell the stories in between the larger moments and imagine some of the ways our characters have crossed. It’s all part of the larger swath of storytelling.”

So expect some crossover between the characters in these new installments. The first batch of short films debuted on Disney’s YouTube page and was eventually collected into a TV special of their own; this time it sounds like the reverse will happen, and the new shorts will hit YouTube after they premiere on television.

The new series of Star Wars: Forces of Destiny shorts will debut on the Disney Channel on October 1, 2017, and October 29, 2017, at 8 pm.

‘2 Dope Queens’ podcast comes to HBO next year as four hour-long specials https://briefnews.eu/2-dope-queens-podcast-comes-to-hbo-next-year-as-four-hour-long-specials/ https://briefnews.eu/2-dope-queens-podcast-comes-to-hbo-next-year-as-four-hour-long-specials/#respond Sun, 13 Aug 2017 02:59:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2-dope-queens-podcast-comes-to-hbo-next-year-as-four-hour-long-specials/

Comedians Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson are bringing their hit podcast 2 Dope Queens to HBO. The network has announced that four one-hour 2 Dope Queens comedy specials will be airing on the network in 2018. This comes about a year and a half since the podcast launched in April 2016 through WNYC studios. The podcast typically contains a few monologues and standup routines from Williams and Robinson as well as storytelling and comedy from a new set of contributors each week.

It’s not clear if or how the format of the specials will differ from the standard formula of the podcast, but it’s certainly the type of comedy show that could easily translate to TV. As the shows were just announced, there’s no word on when the shows will air or who may be guest-starring, but it seems likely Williams and Robinson will pull out all the stops for this event.

While this is a high-profile gig, Williams and Robinson have plenty of experience already: Willam appeared in films The Incredible Jessica James and People Places Things; she’s also been on The Daily Show and HBO’s own Girls. Robinson has shown up on I Love Dick, Broad City and The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore and also published her first book, You Can’t Touch My Hair (And Other Things I Still Have to Explain), last fall. Finally, she has a second podcast, Sooo Many White Guys, which is produced by Broad City‘s Ilana Glazer. Given how busy Williams and Robinson have been over the last few years, their resumes will likely be even longer by the time their specials air on HBO in 2018.

Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson Are Coming to HBO with Four ‘2 Dope Queens’ Specials https://briefnews.eu/jessica-williams-and-phoebe-robinson-are-coming-to-hbo-with-four-2-dope-queens-specials/ https://briefnews.eu/jessica-williams-and-phoebe-robinson-are-coming-to-hbo-with-four-2-dope-queens-specials/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2017 21:27:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jessica-williams-and-phoebe-robinson-are-coming-to-hbo-with-four-2-dope-queens-specials/ Those who know Jessica Williams from her time as a Daily Show Correspondent, or who recently got to know her when she catapulted to smart-rom-com stardom with The Incredible Jessica James, will also likely know that she hosts a comedy/storytelling podcast, alongside writer/actor/comedian Phoebe Robinson. And those who know Phoebe Robinson for her standup, or her role on I Love Dick, or her book You Can’t Touch My Hair (And Other Things I Still Have to Explain) will likely know that she hosts a comedy/storytelling podcast with Jessica Williams. And those who somehow don’t but should know about that podcast — 2 Dope Queens — soon will, because it’s just announced that it’s been picked up by HBO.

The 40-60 minute podcast about…everything (some select topics: vagina dentata, sex with the Rock, man buns, Broadway, the Civil Rights Movement, reparations) should translate pretty easily to the small screen, for 2 Dope Queens is taped live (at Brooklyn’s Union Hall), and kind of reads like a variety show, with a few guest stars per episode. Their impressive roster of guests has included Gabrielle Union, Hannibal Buress, Ilana Glazier, Maria Bamford, Aparna Nancherla, Jon Hamm, Bob the Drag Queen, and even Gil Faizon and George St. Geegland, aka Nick Kroll and John Mulaney.

Robinson gave a statement, quoted in the Hollywood Reporter:

Two Dope Queens and HBO going half on a TV baby? A dream come true. The work wife and I are beyond thrilled that the formula we’ve perfected over the past four seasons of doing the podcast (Ignorance x Cocoa Butter + Comedic Honesty) is being brought to this network.

Casey Bloys, the programming president at HBO, said, “Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson prove you can be hilarious and socially conscious at the same time.” The primary cable network will work with Williams and Robinson to format 2 Dope Queens as four hourlong specials.

Twitter will livestream five BBC UK election specials https://briefnews.eu/twitter-will-livestream-five-bbc-uk-election-specials/ https://briefnews.eu/twitter-will-livestream-five-bbc-uk-election-specials/#respond Tue, 30 May 2017 15:52:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/twitter-will-livestream-five-bbc-uk-election-specials/

Twitter’s attempt to reposition itself as a major video provider has led to a number of important partnerships, but many of them have been US-based, or held at a time where UK users are unable to watch. However, that’s all set to change with the upcoming General Election. The BBC announced today that it’s linking up with the social network for the first time to share coverage of five major debates that begin on May 31st.

The first event is the BBC Election Debate. While it’ll provide an important platform for politicians from six of the UK’s major parties, neither Conservative leader Theresa May or Labour frontman Jeremy Corbyn will be in attendance. They’re saving themselves for the two Question Time Leaders Specials on June 2nd and June 4th. Twitter will also stream the Newsbeat Youth Debate on June 6th and conclude its coverage with the live Election Night Results Special on June 8th.

The BBC says that its “trial interactive experience” will deliver curated real-time tweets from BBC experts alongside live video. Tweets including the hashtags #bbcdebate #bbcqt and #bbcelection may also be presented to politicians during the debates. The video streams will be hosted at bbcelection.twitter.com, but will also likely promoted in timelines of UK users when the BBC begins its broadcasts.

The platform worked well for Bloomberg and BuzzFeed during the US Election and the BBC will hope that its coverage can reach new audiences. If it’s a success, it could open the door for more BBC programming to come to Twitter, including live sports.

Watch the Full Trailer for Dave Chappelle’s First Two Netflix Specials https://briefnews.eu/watch-the-full-trailer-for-dave-chappelles-first-two-netflix-specials/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-the-full-trailer-for-dave-chappelles-first-two-netflix-specials/#respond Tue, 14 Mar 2017 19:26:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-the-full-trailer-for-dave-chappelles-first-two-netflix-specials/ On March 21, not one, but two standup specials from Dave Chappelle’s “personal comedy vault” will be available to stream on Netflix; today, the streaming giant released the first full-length trailer, which promises a Chappelle that has not exactly mellowed with age.

A Tribe Called Quest’s “We the People…” plays over brief clips of Chappelle’s performances, which were taped in Austin in April 2015 and L.A. in March 2016. (Tribe was the musical guest during the post-election episode of SNL that Chappelle hosted, his first hosting gig.) The promo teases some provocative material, the first new specials Chappelle has released since 2004’s Dave Chappelle: For What It’s Worth. He jokes about meeting O.J. Simpson and Nicole Brown, and watching ISIS beheading videos on YouTube (“Don’t like”).

That shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering Chappelle’s victory lap has already generated criticism that the comic went too far: In November, the New York Observerreported on a set at a New York club in which Chappelle defended Trump’s “pussy grabbing” comments. (Recently, he told an interviewer for Canada’s CBC, “I think Trump’s kind of bad for comedy,” because everyone’s started to do the same jokes — though he’s staying active in politics outside comedy.) Of course, these specials were filmed before Trump won the Republican primary, so they just may be a Trump-free zone.

A third special is also in the works; watch the trailer for the first two below.
