Home's optional presence sensing feature can now use interactions with Nest speakers and smart displays to help detect activity in your abode, letting it perform automated actions. If you talk to your Nest Audio or tap your Nest Hub, for instance, Google may know to turn the lights on. Second-gen Nest Hubs can also use their Soli radar sensor to tell when you're close.

You can enable presence sensing in the Google Home app for Android and iOS by visiting the Features section in the settings. Detection is strictly opt-in, and Google stresses that ambient noise won't trigger presence cues. Cameras, doorbells and the Nest Hub Max won't switch devices between "home" and "away" modes.

The expansion makes presence detection considerably more useful. Until now, you needed a Nest Guard, Nest Protect, Nest Thermostat or Nest x Yale smart lock in tandem with your phone's location. While those are frequently good indicators, they don't always tell the full story — you might lock the door when someone is still at home. The use of speakers and displays could make Google's smart home automation more reliable, particularly in unusual scenarios.

The settlement announced Monday was hailed as a victory by Young America’s Foundation (YAF) and the Berkeley College Republicans, who sued the university in 2017 over what they argued were unconstitutional practices restricting conservatives’ freedom of speech.

“This is a landmark free speech victory for all students at UC Berkeley,” Harmeet Dhillon, the attorney representing YAF, said on Monday. “We wanted a settlement that doesn’t benefit just conservative students, but all students.”

The university will no longer be able to “tax” speech on campus it considers disfavored or unpopular, Dhillon said, according to Reuters.

YAF and the College Republicans complained that the university’s policies and practices amounted to a “heckler’s veto” that allowed protesters to silence conservative speakers like Ben Shapiro. The security fee charged by the school for an event featuring Shapiro was three times the amount paid by the hosts of the liberal-leaning Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Under the settlement, there will no longer be a security fee for student events, unless students are handling money or serving alcohol. The university will also pay $ 70,000 to the plaintiffs as legal expenses.

Berkeley commented on the settlement by calling its new fee schedule consistent with treatment of all student groups, and the changes to its event policy “non-substantive.”

The policy challenged by YAF enabled the university to “work effectively with the Berkeley College Republicans as they hosted numerous events featuring prominent conservative speakers without incident or interruption,” UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof said in a statement.

Dhillon and YAF were more enthusiastic, however.

“YAF’s landmark victory for free expression — long squelched by Berkeley’s scheming administrators who weaponized flawed policies to target conservatives — shows that the battle for freedom undertaken by YAF on campuses nationwide is a necessary one,” said the group’s spokesman Spencer Brown.

Attorneys across the US have already reached out to say that they plan to use the settlement as a model for their free-speech lawsuits against other academic institutions, said Dhillon, who was named 2018 Republican Lawyer of the Year last month by the Republican National Lawyers’ Association.

“I hope it opens the door to student groups, advocacy groups, and lawyers all over the country to increase liberty on our campuses, where much of our future is shaped,” she added.

UC Berkeley made headlines in February 2017, when protests against the appearance of then-Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos turned into a riot, causing millions of dollars in property damage and forcing the event to be canceled.

“Instagram has deleted my post about Aleksandr Zakharchenko’s death together with his photo. This is “freedom of speech” according to [Facebook founder and CEO Mark] Zuckerberg,” Tolstoy said in a Facebook post about the removal. He attached a screenshot in which moderators claim he violated “community guidelines” that recommend users abstain from ‘propagating violence’.

The moderators did not go into details but warned that if Tolstoy makes similar posts again his account could be suspended, either for some time or completely.

Shortly after Tolstoy complained about the Instagram incident, moderators deleted his post on Facebook in which Tolstoy described Zakharchenko’s killing as an apparent attack by Ukrainian nationalists and expressed condolences to friends and family of the late leader of the Donetsk People’s Republic. Facebook has owned the Instagram image-sharing service since 2012.

Aleksandr Zakharchenko was killed by a bomb blast when he entered a café in Donetsk a week ago. His bodyguard was also killed by the blast and about 10 more people were injured in the attack. Donetsk officials said that Ukrainian special services were prime suspects in the case and local security services have announced that they had detained several suspects. In official comments, Ukraine’s main security agency, the SBU, denied any complicity in Zakharchenko’s murder.

This is not the first time public figures have complained about Facebook’s handling of politically sensitive posts. Earlier this week popular Russian rock musician Vadim Samoilov said that on the day of Zakharchenko’s funeral he posted the picture of himself with the late head of the Donetsk People’s Republic and a short video with his song “For Donbass!” on Instagram and both materials were soon deleted by moderators.

Samoilov also wrote that Facebook explained their decision as a desire to curb calls for violence, but added that this explanation left him perplexed as neither the photo nor the song contained any such calls. He added that Facebook’s policy looked especially strange to him because the network never attempted to delete or hide any of the openly provocative posts made by Ukrainian nationalists.

When we saw Bang & Olufsen’s Google-Assistant enabled BeoSound speaker at CES in January, they didn’t have a price or street date. Seven months later, that’s changed. Now we know the Google Assistant-enabled, 360-degree speakers will be available starting mid-September for the portable BeoSound 1, and early October for the BeoSound 2.

Hopefully you started saving back in January, because neither of these cost chump change by any stretch of the imagination. The BeoSound 1 will set you back $ 1,750 while the stationary BeoSound 2 commands a $ 2,250 asking price. Par for the course for the company, but a warning was in line nonetheless.

For all those ducats though, you get Chromecast and Airplay 2 built in and full support for Google Assistant. Plus, you get the iconic design and aluminum construction, and the audio that the BeoSound series is known for. There’s also a custom button on top that you can set to control just about anything you’d want, too. So long as it too is compatible with Google Assistant.

Christmas is only a few months away, though. Maybe if you’re really good this year, Santa will come through.

Some people worry that hackers could infiltrate their smart speakers and spy on them, but that hasn’t been the practical reality — not for Amazon’s Echo, at least. A team of researchers from China’s Tencent has come about as close as you can get right now, however. They’ve disclosed an attack on the Echo that uses both a modified speaker and a string of Alexa web interface vulnerabilities to remotely eavesdrop on regular models. It sounds nefarious, but it requires more steps than would be viable for most intruders.

The team created a rogue Echo by removing a flash memory chip from the device, modifying its firmware to get root access, and soldering it back on its circuit board. After that, the group put the speaker on the same WiFi network as untouched Echos. The researchers used Amazon’s whole-home communication protocol plus the Alexa interface flaws (including address redirection, cross-site scripting and web encryption downgrades) to gain full control over victims’ speakers, including silent recording and playing any sound they like.

Amazon has already fixed the associated internet vulnerabilities. As it stands, the likelihood of a real-world attack was small. A would-be eavesdropper would have to know how to disassemble the Echo, identify (and connect to) a network with other Echos and chain multiple exploits. This would be most useful in hotels and other places where a hacker could both expect smart speakers and hang out without drawing too much attention. If there’s a larger concern, it’s that this demonstrates a snooping exploit is possible in the first place — no matter how unlikely it may be.

Today, Duolingo’s Hindi language course for English speakers officially launched on its website. The course is not yet available on iOS or Android apps, but it will be making its way to these devices in the future. The course has been in development for over a year; Kanan Gupta is the lead creator.

Hindi is the second-most spoken language around the world, according to The Washington Post, with almost 600 million speakers as of 2015. India is one of Duolingo’s top 10 markets worldwide, with 10.1 million domestic users, so launching a Hindi course makes sense for the company. There are roughly 8.6 million Hindi speakers learning English through Duolingo. Over 154,000 people have signed up to be notified when a Hindi-language course for English users is available on the service.

This is clearly going to be popular among Duolingo’s user base. Many of India’s denizens (and the Indian diaspora around the world) don’t speak Hindi, though, so Duolingo is already working on English courses for Bengali, Punjabi, Telugu and Tamil speakers. There are currently no courses for English speakers to learn other Indian languages in the works, but you can volunteer to help develop one at Duolingo’s Incubator.
