Spencer Platt / Getty Images Stocks could spin three ways as inflation begins to cool, Charles Schwab analysts said in a note on Monday, outlining a good, a bad, and an ugly outcome for the market. The good: stocks could rally as central banks ease up on rate hikes. The bad: inflation could rebound and set off even more volatility. The ugly: central banks will stay hawkish and send stocks lower. The Fed just issued its third 75-point rate hike this year, and the European Central Bank has also hiked by an unprecedented 75 points, causing stocks to recoil in volatility. If inflation continues its slow descent, markets could rebound on hopes that aggressive rate hikes will end, Schwab said. US inflation cooled slightly to 8.3% in August from 9.1% in July, sparking talk that inflation may have peaked. Some central banks have already indicated they may be nearly done with hiking rates: Brazil's central bank stopped hiking in August, and Norway's central bank suggested its most recent 50-point rate hike could be its last, or close to it, analysts said. "Should inflation begin to recede significantly around year-end due to a softer labor market and easing housing inflation … markets may rebound on prospects for an end to the aggressive rate hikes of 2022," analysts said. They noted though that economic growth could be slowed, as demand will take a time to pick up again, and central bankers are likely to remain cautious for any rebound of inflation. But inflation could come back, if central banks ease too soon, Schwab warned. The global policy rate for developed markets excluding the US is still low historically and remains "deeply negative" — even lower than the rate that preceded the Great Recession in 2008, analysts said. "If central banks respond to a weakening labor market and stop hiking too soon or cut rates while the real policy rate is still firmly negative, there's a chance inflation may rebound. If it does, even higher rates may be needed to quell inflation," the note said. That would be a repeat of the 70s and 80s when central bankers pivoted monetary policy too quickly, leading to a "whipsaw" effect in stocks. "This whipsawing pattern may support a continued environment of volatility and wide market swings as seen this year," the bank warned. And then, there's the possibility that central banks will actually do what they say and stay hawkish until inflation is dead. In that scenario, expect another year like 2022, Schwab said. "Stocks would have further to fall with both price-to-earnings (PE) ratios and earnings contributing to declines; any prospect of a deep recession would likely force analysts to cut earnings estimates," analysts warned. https://i.insider.com/5e6288bffee23d31351297db?format=jpeg Star Trek: Discovery is boldly going into its third season this week… but thanks to a game-changing time jump, it feels more like a maiden voyage. “In many ways, it was like doing a Season 1 show, because we were kind of starting over again,” Discovery executive producer and co-showrunner Michelle Paradise tells TVLine. That’s because Season 3 of Discovery — premiering this Thursday, Oct. 15 on CBS All Access — leaps forward a whopping 930 years into the future, far beyond where any previous Trek series has gone before. (If you remember, Season 2 ended with Burnham and the Discovery crew flying into a time-traveling wormhole.) What does the universe even look like in the year 3188? Figuring that out was part of the fun. “We’re firmly in a new future where we are past all established canon,” Paradise says. “I keep calling it ‘fresh snow.’ We’ve got a landscape in front of us that we can populate as we like.” But that doesn’t mean the new season won’t resemble the Trek we know and love, Paradise reassures us. “Being beyond canon doesn’t mean that we ignore anything… but what going to the future lets us do is take a look at past canon in new ways. So species that may have been friendly toward one another, or not friendly to one another: Can we mix those up in new ways?” The massive time jump also puts a new spotlight on Burnham and the Discovery crew as characters, since they don’t have the ties to Trek canon that they had in the first two seasons. Stranded in this strange new world together, the Discovery crew has to rely on each other more than ever. “Since they’re going so far into the future, all of these characters are leaving everyone else behind,” Paradise notes. “We get to really challenge them in new ways, and we get to dig deeper into all of these characters that we’ve come to love over the past couple of seasons.” Burnham is forced to follow Book’s lead in the premiere, since she is “a stranger in a strange land,” as Paradise puts it. “Having someone who is there and can help her guide her through, at least in the beginning, story-wise, that was really important. And they will continue to be in each other’s orbits as the season progresses.” Does that include any potential for romance? Paradise won’t rule it out: “As far as a spark goes, who knows where that kind of thing goes?” Season 3’s big question, though, is what happened to Starfleet and the Federation; Burnham learns from Book that the Federation crumbled after a mysterious incident known as “The Burn.” Like Season 2’s Red Angel storyline, “The Burn” and how it impacted the Federation will be this season’s central mystery to unravel, Paradise hints, and will be “driving Burnham and the crew of the Discovery through the entire season.” The more things change on Discovery, it seems, the more they stay the same. They’re not alone, though: Season 3 also introduces a host of new characters who are already living in this new future, including a charming rogue named Book, played by Supergirl alum David Ajala. In the premiere, Burnham crash-lands on an untamed planet along with Book, and they hit it off right away — “hit” being the operative word. “There’s a spark,” Paradise concedes with a laugh. “They meet each other when they’re fighting each other, so that’s definitely spark-y.” When Book is first introduced, “we’re not entirely sure what to make of him,” she adds, but “there’s a much, much deeper layer to him, and his motivations are maybe different than what we would expect them to be.”

This week, a plant that’s nearly identical to marijuana is set to become legal to grow in the US.
Thanks to the US Farm Bill, which the House passed on Wednesday in a 369 to 47 vote, American farmers will be able to plant and harvest hemp, a strain of the same plant species from which marijuana originates. The bill passed the Senate Tuesday in an 87 to 13 vote, and President Donald Trump has indicated his support.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

In this edition of Star Wars Bits:
Anyway, here's Venom making out with Jabba the Hutt. pic.twitter.com/mINV2UHNLz
— Jesse McLaren (@McJesse) October 8, 2018
Starting this Star Wars Bits with some great wholesome content today, as Twitter user McJesse blessed us with this incredible gif of Venom making out with Jabba the Hutt. It’s the Star Wars and Marvel crossover that nobody asked for, but that secretly everyone wanted. A sexy muscle symbiote, flexing his gross muscle tongue in the direction of one of the galaxy’s most brutal and brilliant crime lords. Someone call Disney because we think we’ve found their next hit coupling.

Creature creations have always been one of the highlights of the galaxy far, far away, and Making Star Wars has once again gotten a glimpse at a brand new alien addition to canon. If you’ve been keeping up with the site, you know that they’ve been keenly following the production of the new Jon Favreau project The Mandalorian, and one of their newest scoops is a first look at one of the show’s newest creatures. And the eagle-eyed out there might actually recognize the extra-terrestrial from a certain casino on Canto Bight.

We’re still getting news out of the Star Wars announcements heavy hitter that was NYCC, and this reveal from the Star Wars publishing panel will be particularly exciting for fans of the classic X-Wing Expanded Universe series. Alphabet Squadron by Rogue One novelization writer Alex Free will be about “rebel pilots hunting down Imperials.” Which is incredibly exciting, as it sounds a lot like the 1996 crossmedia series of Expanded Universe tales focused on the ace pilots playing their part to take down the Empire. Whatever the outcome, we’re big fans of the Star Wars novels here, so are excited for any new additions to the quickly expanding new canon.

When news of The Mandalorian first begin to surface, one of the earliest rumors was that the new Disney streaming show would star Game of Thrones’ Pedro Pascal. The Kingsman 2 actor would have been an inspired choice, but according to Making Star Wars the rumor “was denied by his representation.” So we likely won’t be seeing Pascal don the famed Mandalorian armor, but rumor has it that John Leguizamo might be next on the casting sheet, so we’ll have to wait and see!

More Making Star Wars scoops, as the site have obtained pictures of what looks like actors wearing Stormtrooper uniforms. As the series is set after the fall of the Empire in the period after Return of the Jedi, this opens up some interesting questions about how and why the troopers are the troopers are there at all. They speculate:
“The idea of the story taking place in the aftermath of the Empire makes your imagination push further out and conceive of the troopers as extinct. But it looks more and more like the troopers were pushed to the outer rim. As the first press release stated, this story takes place far away from the reaches of the New Republic. Are these troopers controlled by the “Regional Governors” or are they just aimless militias taking from the people because there’s no central Imperial government to fund their existence?”
Just in case you didn’t get a chance to check out one of the new episodes of Star Wars Resistance, titled “Triple Dark”, we’ve got a clip directly from Lucasfilm. The episode is a radical adventure which sees Kaz and BB-8 find themselves in the middle of a pirate invasion, desperately trying to get back inside the Platform after being locked out! If you love high stakes, swashbuckling space adventure then you’ll definitely want to check “Triple Dark” out.

In the first six months of this year, the Asset Management Association of China (Amac) — a government-controlled industry body — “lost contact” with 163 private fund institutions, more than 70 percent of the total for which contact was lost for 2017. The “lost contact” designation refers to private funds that have failed to renew their registration status with the association every three months as required. While some have simply wound down, others have failed to meet promised investor payouts or even disappeared with investors’ money.
Of these 163 private funds, more than 70 percent are private equity or venture capital funds, according to an analysis of Amac data by National Business Daily, a Shanghai-based newspaper. The others are mostly hedge funds that invest in publicly traded securities.
The new asset management rules delivered a strong blow to the industry.

The government launched a “regulatory windstorm” last year to control excessive debt growth. Rules specifically targeting asset managers have limited the ability of banks to partner with nonbank financial institutions to manage clients’ money.
“The new asset management rules delivered a strong blow to the industry,” says Wang Bo, director of private equity fund research at Noah Holdings, a wealth management service provider based in Shanghai. “They can no longer raise funds. This started in late 2016, and it has got steadily worse.”
Though assets under management at private funds have continued to rise, the pace of increase has slowed. Problems in China’s peer-to-peer lending sector — where scores of platforms collapsed in recent weeks — have also spilled over into private funds. Several of the “lost contact” funds belong to broader groups that also operated one of the dozens of peer-to-peer platforms under police investigation.

Some of the “lost contact” funds have also allegedly engaged in fraud directly. Late last month, protesters converged on a branch of Bank of Shanghai to demand repayment from four different private fund institutions owned by Fuxing Group, a conglomerate with businesses ranging from property to asset management to rare earths. Fuxing’s controlling shareholder has fled, according to a statement by Amac, which said it “attached high importance” to the case. Unverified reports indicated that the amount of the investment was as much as RMB 25 billion ($ 3.7 billion). Fuxing could not be reached for comment. Protesters claimed that Bank of Shanghai had sold them the products; the bank responded that it had not sold these fund products but had only served as custodian.
Unlike alternative asset managers in the West, which market themselves directly to institutional investors and wealthy individuals, Chinese private funds rely heavily on banks to sell their products. In previous cases, rogue bank employees sold products without authorization. Last year, the banking regulator began requiring financial institutions to make video and audio recordings of all product sales.
New regulations targeting excessive complexity in the design of wealth management products have also fallen heavily on private funds. The rules forbid opaque, derivative-like “nesting” structures in which the product sold to investors is composed of other products, with underlying assets buried beneath layers of complexity.
“The prohibition on multilayer nesting had a direct impact on private funds, especially those that relied on fund mandates from banks,” says Xu Li, private equity analyst at Licai, a wealth management consultancy in Beijing.
