Twitter’s new rules prohibit bulk tweeting to fight spam https://briefnews.eu/twitters-new-rules-prohibit-bulk-tweeting-to-fight-spam/ https://briefnews.eu/twitters-new-rules-prohibit-bulk-tweeting-to-fight-spam/#respond Thu, 22 Feb 2018 04:24:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/twitters-new-rules-prohibit-bulk-tweeting-to-fight-spam/

Twitter’s spam bot issue isn’t new, but it came to a head when it was revealed that thousands of Russian troll accounts used the platform to influence the 2016 Presidential elections. Now, the company has announced a set of changes and new developer guidelines meant to fight off automated actions and to make it harder for “tweetdeckers” to flood the social network. Starting on March 23rd, 2018, apps will need to be able to prevent bulk tweeting or face “enforcement action, up to and including the suspension of associated applications and accounts.”

Twitter has always had anti-spam rules, but its new guidelines clarify what is and isn’t allowed on the website. According to those guidelines, apps shouldn’t permit a user to tweet out the same content or a substantially similar one to multiple accounts. In addition, they shouldn’t allow people to use several accounts to like or retweet a post and to follow a user all at the same time. To prevent bot tweets from going viral, Twitter is also banning apps that can be used to post identical content with a specific hashtag across multiple accounts. Users aren’t allowed to post multiple updates to a trending topic with the intent of inflating its prominence, as well.

The platform is updating Tweetdeck to reflect the new guidance and to show that it’s serious in implementing its rules. Tweetdeck users will no longer be able to bulk tweet, retweet, like or follow using several accounts at the same time. Back in January, Buzzfeed shed light on a practice called “tweetdecking,” wherein users tweet out content across multiple popular accounts added to their Tweetdeck in exchange for payment. Ever seen several famous Twitter accounts tweet the exact same thing? That’s the result of tweetdecking. This update will make it harder to use the dashboard as a tool for their moneymaking scheme and will hopefully prevent the same tweet from appearing on your timeline again and again and again.

Facebook: Two-factor authentication spam was caused by a bug https://briefnews.eu/facebook-two-factor-authentication-spam-was-caused-by-a-bug/ https://briefnews.eu/facebook-two-factor-authentication-spam-was-caused-by-a-bug/#respond Sat, 17 Feb 2018 05:42:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/facebook-two-factor-authentication-spam-was-caused-by-a-bug/

A number of people have been receiving random notifications from Facebook after giving the social network their phone number for two-factor authentication. Worse, if they attempt to cancel that by replying to the message, say with STOP or CANCEL, Facebook would post their replies as a status update for all to see. Now, the social network has admitted that the issues were caused by a bug and promised to roll out a fix that will stop non-security-related notifications in the next few days.

Facebook Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos explained that the website didn’t intentionally spam people who signed up for two-factor using their phone numbers. After all, Facebook doesn’t want to deter people from signing up for 2FA. “[T]he last thing we want is for people to avoid helpful security features because they fear they will receive unrelated notifications,” he said.

The exec has also revealed that responses to the notifications got posted as status updates due to an old feature that allowed posting via test message. Obviously, that’s no longer as useful in a world where WiFi hotspots and mobile data are becoming more and more common. That’s why Facebook is now working to deprecate that feature, so those sick of getting random notifications can rage-reply to them without having to worry that their friends would witness their meltdown.

Until Facebook rolls out a fix, those affected by the bug can go to Settings > Notifications to switch off text notifications. (That’s what I did when I started getting these messages some months ago.) Those who’d rather not risk the same thing happening in the future can choose to use a physical key or one of those code-generating apps instead of giving their phone numbers to the social network.

Twitter is notifying anyone who followed a Russian spam account https://briefnews.eu/twitter-is-notifying-anyone-who-followed-a-russian-spam-account/ https://briefnews.eu/twitter-is-notifying-anyone-who-followed-a-russian-spam-account/#respond Sat, 20 Jan 2018 12:33:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/twitter-is-notifying-anyone-who-followed-a-russian-spam-account/

Last week, Twitter missed the deadline Congress set to turn over information on Russia-backed meddling in the 2016 election. Today, the social media company posted a public update on their internal investigation. First, they found thousands of additional accounts associated with the Russian government-linked Internet Research Agency (IRA). But most importantly, Twitter is emailing notifications to everyone in the US who inadvertently followed one or retweeted or liked one of their messages — which is some 677,775 people.

In effect, that’s a simple measure of the impact that the IRA’s accounts had. Twitter identified 1,062 additional accounts, bringing the total to 3,814; In the ten-week period before the 2016 election that the company studied, those IRA accounts posted 175,993 tweets. Only 8.4% were related to the upcoming elections, but that’s still a wide impact that the Twitter platform unwittingly amplified.

Twitter also identified 13,512 more automated Russian-linked accounts that tweeted election-related material during the period, bringing that total to 50,258. In the company’s blog post, it also reported better security techniques detected 60 percent more suspicious accounts last month than it did in October 2017. They’re getting better at noticing automated activity, Twitter claims: Near-instant replies to tweets, too-regular Tweet timing and coordinated engagement are all red flags.

Twitter will invest more in machine-learning to spot and impede fake and automated accounts, the blog post stated. But popular multitasking overlay programs like Tweetdeck might suffer as the social media company may limit coordinated actions across multiple accounts ‘in Tweetdeck and via the Twitter API.’ To counter that, they promise to expand the developer onboarding process for those building atop the platform’s API. (Twitter acquired Tweetdeck in 2011 and still runs it.)

Deal With Spam Email, Weird Phone Calls, Let’s Players In The Francy Droo & Friends Collection https://briefnews.eu/deal-with-spam-email-weird-phone-calls-lets-players-in-the-francy-droo-friends-collection/ https://briefnews.eu/deal-with-spam-email-weird-phone-calls-lets-players-in-the-francy-droo-friends-collection/#respond Wed, 06 Dec 2017 13:36:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/deal-with-spam-email-weird-phone-calls-lets-players-in-the-francy-droo-friends-collection/ ss_53458072ae0f57e65e0f563f67836698e0ffb18a.1920x1080.jpg

The Francy Droo & Friends Collection offers a group of delightful visual novels designed to charm anyone who’s ever fallen in love with the sender of spam emails, who’s ever wished they were a sassy teen detective, or who’s ever wanted to have an irritating Let’s Player talk over their game session.

The Francy Droo & Friends Collection offers five different lighthearted visual novels for players to work through, all featuring the charmingly oddball humor Oh, A Rock! Studios is known for. Francy Droo and the Mystery of the Missing Mother-in-Law will have players working to save a wedding, while Francy Droo and the Secret of the Shady Midnight Caller will explore the dangers of answering your phone. Both very serious problems.

My Nigerian Prince has players finding love on the other end of a spam email (although things don’t always work out quite as romantically as you’d hope). TRAPPED! In a Soap Opera will send players into a world of mysterious pregnancies, evil twins, and long lost brothers, dealing with a suddenly all-too-real soap opera life. Finally, Who Am I? The Let’s Play Disaster will let players experience the fun of a Let’s Player narrating what they do as they play through a game. Which totally isn’t a commentary on the generic, rude, loud behavior that makes Let’s Plays so incredibly unappealing, no sir!

All five titles offer some goofy fun and silly stories, making for a great connection of little games.

Assuming you don’t lose your mind over the whole Let’s Play thing.

The Francy Droo & Friends Collection is available for $ 4.99 on Steam (with individual games available through Itch.io). For more information on the game and Oh, A Rock! Studios, you can head to the developer’s site or follow them on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

Steam tweaks community reviews to fight spam https://briefnews.eu/steam-tweaks-community-reviews-to-fight-spam/ https://briefnews.eu/steam-tweaks-community-reviews-to-fight-spam/#respond Wed, 22 Nov 2017 01:14:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/steam-tweaks-community-reviews-to-fight-spam/

Valve has known that its platform Steam, the biggest marketplace for PC titles, has had a review problem for years. Groups of users abuse a game’s rating by ‘review bombing’ them, propping up negative feedback with far more ‘this was helpful’ votes than is humanly possible. While Valve tried a passive solution two months ago, but it didn’t fix the problem. So the company is trying a couple more changes: Diluting the effects of likely review-manipulators and making sure a game’s top ten reflect the title’s overall approval rating.

In other words, if 80% of a game’s players left a favorable review, eight out of its top ten reviews will be positive. That will help keep the small amount of artificially-inflated ‘bombed’ posts from drowning out feedback that’s representative of the community’s opinion.

The other fix tracks how many times an account votes that reviews are ‘helpful’ for a single game. Most users just mark a few reviews as helpful or not, and that feedback will continue to be counted normally. Those that blatantly mass-downvote other reviews — typically around 10,000 times on a single game, the Steam blog noted — will see each additional vote diluted more and more.

It’s continual tinkering that reflects how difficult it is to provide democratic and current feedback for a game to prospective buyers. Recently, Steam implemented a change that heavily weighted recent reviews to reflect the current state of the game and highlighted those with the highest percentage of ‘helpful’ votes; This unintentionally enabled ‘review bombing.’

This won’t be the last fix coming to Steam’s review system, either: Future tweaks will address how players feel about a game now after updates and changes, as well as filtering to account for issues that only affect players in certain regions.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Axon, the largest manufacturer of body-worn cameras, said Thursday that it had missed e-mails from the agency due to “miscommunication issues.”

According to Bloomberg, the snafu was due to an e-mail that the SEC sent on August 10 to the company’s new chief financial officer—however those messages were quarantined in a spam filter, and he seemingly did not see them.

The SEC was seeking clarification about the company’s financial disclosures, particularly surrounding its 2016 financial report and its first quarter 2017 report.

Ringless voicemail spam won’t be exempt from anti-robocall rules https://briefnews.eu/ringless-voicemail-spam-wont-be-exempt-from-anti-robocall-rules/ https://briefnews.eu/ringless-voicemail-spam-wont-be-exempt-from-anti-robocall-rules/#respond Mon, 26 Jun 2017 17:01:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ringless-voicemail-spam-wont-be-exempt-from-anti-robocall-rules/

A petition to exempt ringless voicemails from anti-robocall rules has been withdrawn after heavy opposition.

In March, a marketing company called All About the Message petitioned the Federal Communications Commission for a ruling that would prevent anti-robocall rules from applying to ringless voicemails. But the company withdrew its petition without explanation in a letter to the FCC last week, even though the commission hadn’t yet ruled on the matter.

As the name suggests, a ringless voicemail is the delivery of a voice message to a voicemail box without ringing the recipient’s phone. The now-withdrawn petition asked the FCC to declare that this type of message does not count as a “call” under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), which prohibits non-emergency calls made with auto-dialers, artificial voices, or prerecorded voices without the “prior express consent of the called party.”
