It’s a sight many motorists in the UK will have experienced first hand – a car parked over two spaces.

Culprits are usually owners of flashy and expensive cars, who are looking to protect their precious motor from car park prangs.

After shelling out tens of thousands of pounds on a shiny new set of wheels, the last thing you want is for some inconsiderate driver to chip the paintwork in a Tesco’s car park.

However, while it is understandable why these motorists do park over two spots, it is still incredibly inconsiderate.

Often it can take you ages to source out a spot in a car park, so to see one driver hogging two spots will certainly outrage other drivers. 

A recent photograph surfaced online of a BMW owner seemingly commuting the same offence by parking over two bays.

The curious thing about this instance is, however, that the driver in question paid for two parking spaces and displayed both tickets on his dashboard.

Opinions on the driver’s actions are dividing people on social media with some praising the drivers initiative and others still condemning it.

Some people blasted the motorists stating that it makes them “twice as dumb” and another stated that “Just because he has a bmw he thinks he can park like that” and one more was somewhat more assertive saying “What a d******d it’s only a bmw nothing special.”

Other respected the fact that the motorist paid for two tickets but were still frustrated but the action. 

One said: “I like the fact he paid for both spaces but it’s still being an entitled w****r, it’s still taking up a space that someone else could use.”

“Fair play I suppose but if I was looking for a space and he had two I’d still kick his car!” added another. 

While there were some people moaning at the motorist’s action, there were a number that supported them. 

“Totally acceptable, prevents idiots who can’t park, or open their door without slamming the car next to them. If you like an care your car, why not,” stated one.

“One way to make sure no one dings your expensive doors”

Other blamed the motorists in the adjacent spaces: “Well, given the c**t in the black 4×4 was parked like a k**b, he couldn’t really fit in the one to the driver’s side anyway.

However, one motorist issued a warning to the driver saying that he himself was penalised for doing something similar.

He said: “Unfortunately most car parks state you need to be in one bay and between the lines…

“I used a van to move house, parked in a public car park using two bays lengthways and was told it’d be ok by an attendant…

“I left feeling pleased with my problem solving skills but returned to see a ticket…naturally I argued that I’d paid for two tickets, my appeal was rejected.”

Motorists in the UK can be fined for parking over two parking spaces. 

One example of this happening is when a Ferrari driver parked over two spaces last year and was handed a £90 charge despite paying for both bays.

The Equalities Commission said the rights of those identifying as female should not override those of women who are biologically female.

Despite warnings from rights campaigners that single-sex facilities, such as toilets and changing rooms, discriminate against the transgender community, the government said it has “no intention” to make female- and male-only services accessible to transgender people.

“We are clear we have no intention of amending the Equality Act 2010, the legislation that allows for single-sex spaces,” a government statement said on Sunday.

The announcement follows growing pressure from feminists to guarantee the protection of women as the government pushes through the Gender Recognition Act (GRA), which will allow for trans people to legally alter their gender.

It comes after woman complained about having a man self-identifying as a female carrying out her cervical smear test. Women also complained about trans swimming in female-only pools.

In response to a 12,000-strong petition calling for women to be consulted before any change to the Act is passed, the Government Equalities Office said: “We are clear that we have no intention of amending the Equality Act 2010, the legislation that allows for single-sex spaces.

“Any GRA reform will not change the protected characteristics in the Equality Act nor the exceptions under the Equality Act that allow provision for single and separate sex spaces.”

It added: “Providers of women-only services can continue to provide services in a different way, or even not provide services to trans individuals, provided it is objectively justified on a case-by-case basis.

“The same can be said about toilets, changing rooms or single-sex activities. Providers may exclude trans people from facilities of the sex they identify with, providing it is a proportionate means of meeting a legitimate aim.”

Gay and trans rights group Stonewall said: “Trans people are subject to appalling levels of abuse in daily life and dehumanised by the way the current debate questions their very right to exist.

“This is unacceptable in Britain in 2018 and it demonstrates just why the Gender Recognition Act needs urgent reform.”

In what may be one of the most controversial studies of the year, researchers at Skidmore College—clearly triggered by a change in the American Psychological Association (APA) style book—sought to quantify the benefits of two spaces after a period at the end of a sentence. After conducting an eye-tracking experiment with 60 Skidmore students, Rebecca L. Johnson, Becky Bui, and Lindsay L. Schmitt found that two spaces at the end of a period slightly improved the processing of text during reading. The research was trumpeted by some press outlets as a vindication of two-spacers’ superiority.

For anyone who learned their keyboarding skills on a typewriter rather than a computer—and for the many who developed their keyboard muscle memory using software packages such as Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing—the double-space after the period is a deeply ingrained truth. While modern style, based on the fallacy that computer typography makes such double-spaces redundant and Paleolithic, has demanded the deprecation of the second tap of the space bar after a punctuation full-stop, many have openly resisted this heresy, believing that the extra space is a courtesy to the reader and enhances the legibility of the text.

Previous cognitive science research has been divided on the issue. Some research has suggested closer spacing of the beginning of a new sentence may allow a reader to capture more characters in their parafoveal vision—the area of the retina just outside the area of focus, or fovea—and thus start processing the information sooner (though experimental evidence of that was not very strong). Other prior research has inferred that an extra space prevents lateral interference in processing text, making it easier for the reader to identify the word in focus. But no prior research found by Johnson, Bui, and Schmitt actually measured reader performance with each typographic scheme.

A parliamentary committee expressed serious concerns over higher education safe space policies, aimed at preventing controversial speakers from having a platform for fear their speeches may be offensive.

The Committee on Human Rights, chaired by former Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman, found that while there is no “wholesale censorship,” certain tactics to prevent controversial figures from sharing their opinions could have serious repercussions. “Safe spaces cannot cover the whole of the university or university life without impinging on right to free speech,” the report said.

“The concept of safe spaces is either too broad or very vague and therefore we do not find it helpful. University is an environment where a range of opinions should be heard and explored. Minority views should not be barred from student union premises.”

It added that while it has not found, contrary to media suggestions, an issue of “wholesale censorship,” there are “real problems” which could discourage people from “putting up challenging events.”

“Whilst most student union officers who responded to our survey [comprising 33 responses in all] say they are confident that they and their companions can speak freely, such disincentives could be having a wider chilling effect, which is hard to measure,” the report said.

The report comes amid a string of no-platforming protests levelled at those across the political spectrum. LGBT rights campaigner Peter Tatchell was kept from giving a speech at Canterbury Christ Church University amid allegations he held “racist” and “transphobic” views. Julie Bindel, writer and the co-founder of Justice for Women and a radical feminist, was also banned from speaking at the University of Manchester Students’ Union in October 2015 as students said her views on transgender people could “incite hatred towards and exclusion of our trans students.”

Most recently, King’s College London made headlines after a group of masked activists stormed an event where Carl Benjamin was appearing. Benjamin, who goes by the online moniker of ‘Sargon of Akkad,’ has been described by various outlets as a member of the so-called ‘alt-right.’

In regards to such disruptions, the report said: “The right to protest does not extend to stopping events entirely. Intimidating people exercising their free speech rights is particularly deplorable when meetings are invaded by masked protesters seeking to intimidate.”

Harman said evidence shows free speech may also be hindered by university bureaucracy. “While media reporting has focused on students inhibiting free speech – and in our report we urge universities to take action to prevent that – free speech is also inhibited by university bureaucracy and restrictive guidance from the Charity Commission,” she added.

Facebook Spaces is no longer just a place for you to hang out with friends and family in your list: you can also use it to form bonds with people in the Groups you’re in. You can now host or join a VR Space with up to four people from a Group, so you can discuss shared interests in virtual reality. The social VR app allows you to connect with new people in a deeper way: you could, for instance, conduct practice sessions together using VR props if you’re all part of a music or a stand-up comedy group. You could perform in one Space as a band and livestream your performance to friends. You could also watch videos together or just chat and get to know one another at a deeper level in a VR environment.

By opening up Spaces to Groups, Facebook has amped up the social aspect of the app. Since that also means you could end up in a single VR environment with people you don’t know that well — or at all — Facebook has ensured you can report people and mute or pause the experience anytime. It’s an early experimental feature, though, so you’ll likely encounter bugs as you go along, meeting new friends through your Oculus Rift or HTC Vive headsets.

This week George Clarke‘s programme on Channel 4 featured a “young couple who have put everything into putting a home on water”.

The couple, kitchen fitter Sam, 30 and his partner Adele, had bought a waterlogged house boat to make into a home – with a deadline of five weeks.

The benefit of the house boat, a restored Narrow Boat, was said to be that it was mortgage free.

Sam spoke of the unique challenges associated with renovating the property.

He said: “Nothing can be fixed to the walls or sides.

“There’s a lot of water down there, and the window frames are leaking.”

The plan was to install a cloakroom and toilet at the front of the boat.

In the middle, beds would be fitted doubling up as storage, with a kitchenette on one side, and cooker on the other.

The end of the boat would host a sofa and a wood burner to keep it heated.

The project proved to be a huge success, surprising even George with how good it looked.

“She floats! And she looks beautiful,” said owner Sam of the project.

The sideboard in the middle of the boat folded out to become a double bed, while the en-suite shower boasted a stained glass window.

The boat had wooden flooring and a spacious living room complete with soft furnishings.

Twitter users prayed the couple’s project, with one writing: “Already loving the Dudley lad converting the canal barge on @MrGeorgeClarke s #amazingspaces and it’s not even started yet.”

Another wrote: “Love watching @MrGeorgeClarke #Amazingspaces but always make me disappointed I don’t have my own cool shed / boat etc!”

George Clarke was told to “man up” recently after he reacted in a certain way to rain on his programme.

One Twitter user wrote: “Man up! lol! thought you were more manly than that hahaha!”.
