The JWST imagery also gave space agencies an opportunity to share Mars’ near-infrared atmospheric composition using the telescope’s onboard spectrograph array. The spectroscopic ‘map’ (pictured at middle) shows the planet absorbing carbon dioxide at several different wavelengths, and also shows the presences of carbon monoxide and water. A future research paper will provide more detail about the Martian air’s chemistry.

It was particularly tricky to record the images. Mars is one of the brightest objects the James Webb telescope can see — a problem for an observatory designed to study the most distant objects in the universe. Researchers countered this by capturing very short exposures and using special techniques to analyze the findings.
This is only the initial wave of pictures and data. It will take more observations to reveal more about Mars. However, the spectral info already hints at more information about the planet’s materials. Liuzzi also thinks JWST studies could settle disputes over the presence of methane on Mars, potentially signalling that the Red Planet harbored life in its distant past.

The Federal Communications Commission has a plan to minimize space junk by requiring low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to be disposed no more than five years after being taken out of service.
A proposal released yesterday by FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel would adopt “a first-ever rule requiring non-geostationary satellite operators to deorbit their satellites after the end of their operations to minimize the risk of collisions that would create debris.” It’s scheduled for an FCC vote on September 29.
The five-year rule would be legally binding, unlike the current 25-year standard that’s based on a NASA recommendation proposed in the 1990s.
]]>The leak was first observed this morning, Saturday, September 3, when the rocket’s tanks were being filled with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen which act as fuel for the launch. There was a leak in the liquid hydrogen line which connected to the rocket’s core stage, requiring the tanking to be halted.

“The launch director waived off today’s Artemis I launch attempt at approximately 11:17 a.m. EDT,” NASA wrote in an update. “Teams encountered a liquid hydrogen leak while loading the propellant into the core stage of the Space Launch System rocket. Multiple troubleshooting efforts to address the area of the leak by reseating a seal in the quick disconnect where liquid hydrogen is fed into the rocket did not fix the issue. Engineers are continuing to gather additional data.”
Launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson declared the launch a “no-go” at just after 11 a.m. ET (8 a.m. PT) this morning. The teams had tried several options to stop the leak, including warming up the quick disconnect in the hope it would reseal, to using helium to add pressure to the line to try to reseal it. But none of the attempts fully stopped the leak, so the launch was called off when the liquid oxygen tank was 100% full and the liquid hydrogen tank was 11% full.
Now, the tanks will have to be drained of propellants before another launch attempt can be made. If the leak issue can be fixed in time, there is another launch opportunity for the rocket on Monday, September 5.

Like Michael Jordan before him, NBA champ LeBron James is heading to Toontown.
In the first trailer released Saturday for Space Jam: A New Legacy (which hits HBO Max July 16, in addition to theaters), James faces off with some of the most classic cartoon characters from the Warner Bros. archives.
While trying to convince his son, Dom (newcomer Cedric Joe) to follow in his basketball footsteps, James is launched into an epic adventure when he finds himself trapped inside “The Serververse,” an oddball digital space unlike anything he’s ever seen before. There, he meets the film’s villain, Al-G Rhythm (Black Monday‘s Don Cheadle), an evil computer algorithm who kidnaps his son .
“The only way you’re getting your son back is if you and I play a little basketball,” Al threatens.
In order to save his son, James must assemble an elite team of cartoon’s best ballers, including Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tunes favorites like Sylvester, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn and more. But those aren’t the only classic WB characters spotted in the trailer. The Iron Giant, The Flintstones, King Kong and Yogi Bear also cameo, as James hustles to get his team in top shape to take on Al’s nefarious Goon Squad.

The long-awaited sequel also stars Khris Davis (Atlanta), Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery), and Jeff Bergman and Eric Bauza (Looney Tunes). Malcolm D. Lee (Girls Trip) directs.

The Machiavellian political leader Samar Singh (played by Saif Ali Khan) rose to the top of the food chain before making an unprecedented decision in the first season of Tandav. The show’s lead star recently spoke to Express.co.uk about what fans could expect to see in the Amazon Prime series’ second season.
New Indian Original for Amazon Prime, Tandav, is hoped to continue for a second season after delivering a show-stopping finale last week.
All episodes were released on Friday, January 15, meaning many subscribers will have been able to race through the entire nine-episode series over the weekend.
Even so, beware of spoilers, as the first instalment of Tandav packed in plenty of unexpected twists and turns.
Lead star Saif Ali Khan portrays Samar Singh, a ruthless political leader and son of the sitting Prime Minister Devki Nandan (Tigmanshu Dhulia) who forms his own party, Tandav, to strengthen his grip on New Delhi.
READ MORE: Tandav is based on which politician?
Speaking to Express.co.uk, Khan explained: “I play the role of the ambitious and cunning son of a sitting prime minister. He’s rebellious and aggressive, dangerous and passionate.
“I would say that he is a cross between Michael Corleone from The Godfather and somebody with a little more emotion!”
The Indian star kept plot details close to his chest, but references to The Godfather certainly suggest his downfall could be on the way in season two.
By the end of the series, Samar has pulled a U-turn on his campaign to become Prime Minister, instead positioning himself as an advisor who can make or break potential successors.
Khan teased: “Well, the first series is left with some questions unanswered so all I can say is, watch this space.”
As Samar was making his final power play of the first season, the finale also dropped the horrific death of Sana Mir (Kritika Kamra), apparently by suicide, out of the blue.
Despite the lack of announcements from Amazon, both Khan and series creator and director Ali Abbas Zafar are confident Tandav will continue in season two.
Zafar recently told Mid-Way: “The pandemic has been a boon for me because, as writers, we don’t get to spend enough time with ourselves.”
NASA astronauts will try again to blast off to to the International Space Station Saturday afternoon, after inclement weather scrubbed a launch Wednesday. If successful, Saturday’s takeoff will mark the first crewed space mission since the shuttle program was retired in 2011.
The second attempt at launch is currently scheduled for 3:22 pm Eastern. However, for the event to proceed as planned, weather needs to be clear both at Kennedy Space Center in Florida and all along the ocean pathway where the astronauts would have to splash down in case of an emergency.
If Saturday’s launch does not take place, another attempt will happen at 3 pm Sunday.
The Falcon 9 rocket and its Crew Dragon capsule was built by SpaceX, a private company owned by Elon Musk, which will serve as ground control for the endeavor. NASA astronauts Douglas G. Hurley and Robert L. Behnken are the duo traveling in the rocket; they will launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The mission will be the first time that SpaceX will transport people, and not cargo, to outer space.

Netflix’s Steve Carell-led Space Force shoots for the comedic stars… but does it reach them?
In a moment, we’ll want to hear what you think about the satirical new comedy series from Carell and his Office-mate Greg Daniels, which debuted Friday. But first, a quick recap:
We meet Carell’s Gen. Mark Naird as he’s being made a four-star general; though our current president’s name is not uttered in the series’ first episode, it’s implied that Trump is the commander-in-chief in the show. At Naird’s first Joint Chiefs of Staff meeting, he’s put in charge of the newly announced Space Force, aka the branch of the military now tasked with “complete space dominance: Boots on the moon by 2024.” Space Force’s base? An old North American Aerospace Defense Command post in Colorado — which means Gen. Naird and his wife Maggie (played by Friends‘ Lisa Kudrow) and daughter Erin (Ma‘s Diana Silvers) have to move from Washington, D.C. (Maggie is not happy about this development.)
A year later in Wild Horse, Colo., it’s the day of Space Force’s big satellite launch. Throughout the day, Naird repeatedly is told that conditions aren’t favorable for a successful lift-off; these warnings come from civilian advisor Dr. Adrian Mallory (The New Pope‘s John Malkovich) and scientists like Dr. Chang Kaifang (Silicon Valley‘s Jimmy O. Yang), but Naird stubbornly refuses to heed them. After taking a minute — during which Beach Boys’ “Kokomo” plays in his head — the general moves forward with the launch of Epsilon 6 anyway… and it’s successful.
Later that night, Naird and Mallory celebrate with drinks and cigars on the porch. And when Naird is gazing at Epsilon 6 through a telescope, he watches as another, bigger craft swings by and clips the satellite’s solar panels. “Motherf–ker!” Naird yells.
Along the way, we learn that Maggie is in jail in Colorado (though we don’t know why) and Erin is dating Bobby, aka Yuri, the Russian exchange scientist (who’s definitely a spy) working with Naird. The series’ all-star cast also includes: Noah Emmerich (The Americans), Jane Lynch (Glee), Diedrich Bader (American Housewife), Dan Bakkedahl (Veep), Jessica St. Clair (Playing House), Roy Wood Jr. (The Daily Show), Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) and the late Fred Willard (Modern Family) in his final role as Naird’s father.

Upon its Nov. 1 launch, Apple TV+‘s first original series included For All Mankind, which looks at the 1960s space race through the lens of an alternate history. Do you say da or nyet to the new drama?
The following recaps only the first of the three episodes released on Nov. 1, followed by a non-spoilery overview of Episode 2.
For All Mankind more or less opens with an ersatz Walter Cronkite anchoring the live broadcast of the very first moon landing, as the nation watches enrapt. Except, the person to emerge from the lunar module and set foot on the moon is not Neil Armstrong, but a Russian cosmonaut. Because in this version of history, Russia utterly blindsided NASA and won the space race, laying claim to what the newspapers will dub the “Red Moon.”
What follows is a bit of panic and a lot of finger pointing at NASA, which is overseen by aerospace engineer Wenher Von Braun. President Nixon — seen in archival video that is overlaid with fictional dialogue — for one is immensely perturbed to be bested by Russia, seeing as it appears that his administration dropped the ball previously carried by Kennedy and Johnson. On a micro scale, the space jockeys at NASA are quite deflated, seeing as they had their eyes on that “first man” prize. But in addition to the disappointed Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, who are to pilot Apollo 11 in a few weeks, Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) plays Edward Baldwin, the commander of Apollo 10, which came within eight short miles of the moon’s surface… but was envisioned as a mere “dress rehearsal.” In flashbacks, we see how Ed and LM co-pilot Gordo Stevens were ever so tempted to seize the day and make the landing themselves… but Ed held back.
In the wake of Russia’s historic feat, Ed and his colleagues hit a local watering hole, where a reporter looks to get some quotes on NASA being bested. Ed at first deflects the questions, but, lubricated by booze and agitated by anger, he gets to grousing about how NASA has lacked “guts” ever since the Apollo 1 fire. Ed winds up quoted in Newsweek, and from there his career goes a bit sideways — starting with him being pulled from Apollo 15. Luckily, he has just enough friends in the right places to hold onto a job, albeit riding a desk in the applications division. Dissatisfied, Ed mulls a return to the Navy, where he was a highly regarded pilot, though his likely assignment — to Vietnam — doesn’t sit well with wife Karen (Shantel VanSanten).
Elsewhere at NASA, we meet Tracy Stevens (Sarah Jones), Von Braun’s mentee of sorts who aspires to join Mission Control, and at one point during a simulation exercise demonstrates her know-how — though none of the dudes pay her much mind. Far from the Space Enter, we get intermittent glimpses of a group of Mexican immigrants making their way to the States, among them a young girl named Aleida and her father Octavio. It is not until Episode 2 that their story starts to take shape and lightly dovetail with what is happening at NASA, where months later Octavio will take a janitorial job.
The first episode culminates in the Apollo 11 mission that was to mark the first moon walk, but instead, the best hope is that they can make some news by having the astronauts share a live phone call with Nixon from the surface. This Apollo 11, however, experiences problems upon descent, and for a nail-biting stretch of time loses all telemetry with Mission Control. But, whew, just as Nixon is readying to read a mournful speech to the nation, Von Braun & Co. hear crackling over the radio, followed by Armstrong reporting on their rough-but-successful landing.
What’s next, in this alternate reality? Episode 2 delves deeper into Ed’s dilemma, as he puts out feelers with a Navy pal — until he is approached by a congressman to testify in the hearings about NASA’s shortcomings; Von Braun learns of Nixon’s plans to reclaim supremacy in the space race, and thus keep NASA relevant (though Russia may have yet another trick up their sleeves); Tracy plots a big career move; and we get a bit more insight into Octavio and Aleida’s world/drama.
Have you sampled any of For All Mankind‘s first three episodes, with the rest to be released weekly?
