German astronaut Alexander Gerst has compressed a six-hour flight, he witnessed from the ISS window, into a mesmerizing time-lapse sequence, capturing the Soyuz journey from blastoff at Baikonur all the way to its docking.

The astronaut shot the spacecraft’s trip from the International Space Station’s ‘Cupola’ observatory module. The video shows the Soyuz passing different layers of the Earth’s atmosphere. It is seen leaving a smooth contrail, which turns from white to blue right as the ship becomes a shiny dot surrounded by complete darkness.

“I still can’t comprehend that there are humans riding on the top of this lone white streak into the great black open,” astonished Gerst wrote on Twitter.

The Soyuz MS-11 was launched on Monday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. It carried NASA’s Anne McClain, Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques and the ship’s commander, cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko into orbit.

It was the first successful manned Soyuz flight since the botched launch on October 11, when cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin and rookie astronaut Nick Hague escaped certain death during a carrier missile malfunction.

The Russian Soyuz-FG launch vehicle lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, the first launch since a rocket malfunction last month. The carrier has put the Progress MS-10 space freighter, loaded with 2.5 metric tons of supplies, on a trajectory toward the International Space Station (ISS). Progress MS-10 is scheduled to dock with the ISS at 22:30 Moscow time (19:30 GMT) on Sunday. All Russian space flights have been on hold since October 11, when the Soyuz-FG rocket with Russian cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin and NASA astronaut Nick Hague, malfunctioned about two minutes after lift-off, forcing the men to use the escape pod.

A video shows a Soyuz-2-1b rocket successfully blasting off into space from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northwest Russia as it delivered a navigation satellite into orbit.

The launch was conducted on Saturday night. The rocket was equipped with upper stage Fregat, which propelled a GLONASS-M satellite into orbit. The satellite is part of Russian national GPS-like navigation system.

The rocket successfully ejected all stages and was tracked by the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces during the launch, the Defense Ministry said.

Earlier, a similar rocket delivered a military satellite into orbit. The two recent Soyuz launches come after a Soyuz-FG rocket failed to transport cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin and NASA’s Nick Hague to the International Space Station on October 11. Both space travelers made it home safe and unharmed.

NASA is reporting that there has been an “issue with the booster” on the Soyuz craft that’s currently taking astronauts Nick Hague of NASA and cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin to the International Space Station (ISS). Details are sparse at the moment, but it appears that the capsule is making a “ballistic descent,” descending at a high rate of speed, and will soon attempt an emergency landing. Crews are reportedly underway to the designated landing site, with an ETA of about an hour.

Update 10/11/2018 5:16 AM ET: According to Reuters news editor Gerry Doyle, the capsule was sited under parachute in Kazhakstan. Shortly afterwards, it touched down, and the crew is reportedly fine and has made radio contact. “I just rode a malfunctioning booster for a few minutes and had to abort,” one of the astronauts reportedly said.

Update 10/11/2018 5:25 AM ET: NASA has affirmed that astronaut Nick Hague of NASA and cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin are in contact with rescue crews, and that they’re in good condition, though no doubt a little shook up.

It turns out Russian cosmonaut Sergey Prokopyev has grayed quite a bit following the drop in air pressure on board the ISS, his colleague has discovered, while giving the commander of the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft a haircut.

In his latest enlightening video report from aboard the International Space Station, cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev has detailed the haircut process in near-zero gravity some 400 kilometers above Earth. Using his colleague Sergey Prokopyev as his subject, Artemyev explains that while a regular hair clipper can be used in space, it must be attached to a vacuum cleaner to ensure the safety of the crew and equipment.

While cutting the hair of the commander of the Soyuz MS-09, Artemyev noticed that his friend has greyed quite a bit since arriving at the ISS in June.

“When you arrived, you only had four grey hairs, now you have 47,” the barber notes, to which Artemyev jokingly replies that it happened “after the decompression.”

On August 30, a sudden drop in air pressure occurred on board the space station. The problem was caused by a tiny two-millimeter hole drilled in the hull of the Soyuz spacecraft attached to the space station. While notifying the command of the malfunction, the cosmonauts used Kapton tape to temporarily seal the air leak, and later sealed it with a sealant.

Russian cosmonauts will go on a spacewalk on November 15 to investigate the micro hole from the outside, as part of the ongoing investigation into whether the spacecraft was damaged on Earth or when already in space.

A Soyuz MS-08 rocket has taken off from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, carrying two US astronauts and a Russian cosmonaut to the International Space Station (ISS). The spacecraft is expected to reach ISS in two days.

The ISS Expedition 55/56 includes the spaceship commander, Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev, as well as two onboard engineers, NASA astronauts Andrew Feustel and Richard Arnold. The rocket carrying the crew lifted off at 17:44 GMT, as planned.

The Soyuz MS-08 flight to the ISS takes some 48 hours and the spacecraft is scheduled to dock with the International Space Station at 19:41 GMT, on March 23. The Russian Roscosmos space agency reported earlier on Wednesday that all three stages of the rocket have been successfully separated and the spacecraft has been put on orbit.

It is the third spaceflight for Feustel, while Artemyev and Arnold are travelling to the ISS for the second time. Both Artemyev and Arnold performed two spacewalks each during their previous missions, while Feustel has walked in space as many as six times.

The program of this latest space expedition also involves spacewalks. In August, the Russian ISS crew members are expected to manually launch several nano-satellites. They will also install RT’s 360° video cameras on a sidewall of the ISS.

A Russian-made Soyuz rocket was successfully launched from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana, on Friday. The rocket carries four O3b Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) communication satellites, operated by the SES Networks. The Soyuz craft is also fitted with another Russian-made module – Fregat-MT upper stage – which is expected to put the satellites into their designated orbits. The Soyuz launch vehicles have been used at the Kourou spaceport since 2011, where Russian Glavcosmos and French Arianespace work in cooperation. Friday’s launch was the eighteenth launch of the Soyuz family of rockets from the space center, and the fourth time it has carried the O3b satellites.

The Russian Embassy in the UK has issued a tongue-in-cheek challenge to a British journalist who said that Russian spacecraft were still operating with Soviet technology less powerful than an Apple smartphone.

“Almost nothing the Russians use to go into orbit has changed since the collapse of communism. They have updated the computers on their best rocket, the Soyuz, but it still has less computing power than an iPhone,” journalist Giles Whittell wrote in his Sunday Times profile of Tim Peake, Britain’s first spacewalker, emphasizing the dangers he faced during his ascent to the International Space Station.

“Perhaps Giles Whittell should then try to fly into space using his iPhone, not an ‘outdated’ Soyuz,” fired back the embassy’s Twitter account.

Curiously, in the article, Whittell says that Tim Peake himself, who flew on the Soyuz in 2015, “is a fan of Baikonur [cosmodrone], or at least of the Soviet technology it represents.”

“They overengineer everything, and the Soyuz is the same. It’s like a tank. It’s by far the safest and most reliable means of getting to space,” Peake said.

Over its history, the Soyuz rocket has been launched into space over 1,500 times, with a success rate of 97 percent. The attached Soyuz capsule that carries the crew has never failed to deliver its astronauts to the International Space Station, where it has been the only means of ferrying crews to and fro since the retirement of the Space Shuttle in 2011.

While the Soyuz shuttle is actually in its fourth iteration, it deliberately maintains the same fundamental design, as during its first launch in 1966, due to its track record of reliability, simplicity and good value. So even if it uses computers with less power than an iPhone, it is not because Russian engineers cannot put an iPhone inside the Soyuz, and make it run the launch software.

The Soyuz MS-06 has successfully blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to deliver three new members of the ISS Expedition 53/54 to their orbital outpost.

The spacecraft carrying Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin as well as NASA astronauts Joe Acaba and Mark Vande Hei lifted off at 21:17 GMT. It will take Soyuz MS-06 six hours to complete its flight to the ISS.

“Launch vehicle Soyuz-FG and manned spacecraft Soyuz МS-06 with the crew of the next long-duration expedition successfully lifted off from Gagarin’s Launch Pad of Baikonur space center,” Russia’s space agency Roscosmos said.

The Soyuz MS-06 launch comes shortly after the Soyuz MS-04 spacecraft successfully landed in Kazakhstan, carrying three Expedition 52 members back to Earth.

The spaceship is scheduled to dock to the International Space Station at 10:57pm EDT, where the three new members will join Expedition 53 commander NASA’s Randy Bresnik, cosmonaut Sergey Ryazanskiy and Paolo Nespoli from the European Space Agency. The new trio will spend five-and-a-half months aboard the station.

“Spacecraft Soyuz MS-06 will approach the ISS using a short six-hour rendezvous capability. The spacecraft will reach the station after about six hours and twenty minutes during the fifth orbit of its free flight,” Roscosmos explained, adding that the docking will be fully automatic.
