Who have asked “Where are we going?” or “Why is there something rather than nothing?” Our Universe is a strange one, and sound isn’t any different. After all, what is sound? It is a type of energy made only by the movement of air particles. We use our ears to ‘hear’ the Universe around us, but sound kind of has no objective reality. If there are no air particles to move about, then sound-making energy cannot exist.

Sound is something we take for granted. The awesome power of our brains to process tiny vibrations that bottle-neck in our ears is underappreciated. Most people don’t seem to realize just how interesting the science of sound actually is.

For example, sound was engineered into a weapon during the Second World War. Did you know that? When it gets too loud, sound transforms into a shockwave, causing huge amounts of damage. Sound can also influence us subconsciously, making us act and behave in weird ways; even if we can’t hear the sound itself. And even though sound cannot travel across space, scientists are building cosmic ‘ears’ to overcome this problem and start listening to the heavens.

If sound was taught like this in school, we may have paid attention.

Are you ready to test your knowledge and enter the strange world of sound? Then take this quiz, provided by London Soundproofing, and see how much you don’t know…

Quiz was originally published on LondonSoundProofing.

Aquaman deleted scenes: Why THIS major Arthur moment was cut – ‘It sounds important’ https://briefnews.eu/aquaman-deleted-scenes-why-this-major-arthur-moment-was-cut-it-sounds-important/ https://briefnews.eu/aquaman-deleted-scenes-why-this-major-arthur-moment-was-cut-it-sounds-important/#respond Mon, 24 Dec 2018 13:21:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/aquaman-deleted-scenes-why-this-major-arthur-moment-was-cut-it-sounds-important/

The DC blockbuster already clocks in at over 2 hours and 20 minutes, so it’s understandable that James Wan wanted to make trims wherever he could. And it seems there’s one sequence in particular that didn’t make the cut, but would have provided some more interesting insight to Arthur’s backstory.

Speaking to Comic Book, Wan revealed that a scene was filmed in which we saw Arthur first realising he could breathe underwater.

It’s quite a key element of Aquaman’s very character, but it seems the time constraints kept it out of the final edit.

“I know it sounds very important,” he added, “but it being a flashback scene, I really felt like I had too many flashbacks as it were, and that I didn’t want to cram another one in there.”

The site adds, however, that Wan hopes to add the deleted moment to the DVD and Blu-ray release next year.

Aquaman has won the US box office but with a slightly lower box office haul than its DC predecessors.

Its unfortunate for a studio desperately in need of some good PR, but at least word-of-mouth should stop Aquaman from sinking as quickly as, say, Justice League.

That movie bowed to $ 93.8 million compared to Aquaman’s $ 67.4 million, but reviews for the ensemble offering were dire, whereas the sheer lunacy of Aquaman seems to have endeared it to fans.

And in any case, the caper has performed exceptionally well internationally. It’s Warner Bros’ most successful movie ever in China already.

Another moment that ended up being deleted – although in this case it wasn’t even filmed – was a very gory one indeed.

“[Will Beall, writer] had a really quirky out-there [sequence],” Wan said, according to Dark Horizons.

“It wasn’t the studio, it was me that said, ‘I don’t know if we can have that in there, that’s a bit weird.’ As much as I loved it.

“He had this sequence where… Aquaman has been apprehended by King Orm and he’s been thrown into this dungeon. Like this really awful prison deep in Atlantis.

“He ends up starting a prison riot, where all the guards are sharks.”

He added: “They were shark-guards, like all shark head… and he kills one of the shark guards and the shark starts bleeding and then that starts a feeding frenzy among all the other shark guards.

“It just went nuts. We’re talking like clouds of blood billowing everywhere and he uses that to escape.

“I was like ‘Holy c**p, I don’t know if I can do that.’”

Aquaman is out now.

A recent sexual assault charge in Florida has been linked to a high-tech kind of witness: an online gamer who overheard an apparent rape through an online-gaming headset.

A Fox affiliate in Pasco County, Florida, reported that the arrest of 18-year-old Daniel Fabian on November 21 stemmed from a “late June” report by an unnamed Grand Theft Auto Online player. This deputy affidavit alleges that Fabian had told other online players, through voice chat, that he was stepping away to “smash” (a slang term for sexual activity) with someone, and that this person was 15 years old.

According to the affidavit, Fabian apparently failed to mute his attached microphone. The affidavit also alleges that during the following 15 minutes, the witness heard cries of “distress” and the word “no” from a woman’s voice. Other details about this witness report, including the witness’s affiliation with the defendant or how this evidence led to an eventual discovery of an alleged victim (and her submission of a medical exam and DNA test, which linked Fabian to the assault), have not appeared in reports about the charges.

NASA’s Mars rover, Opportunity, fell silent earlier this year, but even if it never regains full function, it had one last gift to give. Scientists have transformed Opportunity’s image of its 5000th sunrise on Mars into music using a process called data sonification.

“Image sonification is a really flexible technique to explore science and it can be used in several domains, from studying certain characteristics of planet surfaces and atmospheres, to analyzing weather changes or detecting volcanic eruptions,” says Domenico Vicinanza, director of the Sound and Game Engineering research group at Anglia Ruskin University. “In health science, it can provide scientists with new methods to analyze the occurrence of certain shapes and colors, which is particularly useful in image diagnostics.”

He and his co-creator, the University of Exeter’s Genevieve Williams, will debut their two-minute composition (“Mars Soundscapes”) at NASA’s booth at the Supercomputing SC18 conference this week in Dallas, Texas.

'City of Surveillance': Google-backed smart city sounds like a dystopian nightmare https://briefnews.eu/city-of-surveillance-google-backed-smart-city-sounds-like-a-dystopian-nightmare/ https://briefnews.eu/city-of-surveillance-google-backed-smart-city-sounds-like-a-dystopian-nightmare/#respond Wed, 24 Oct 2018 22:23:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/city-of-surveillance-google-backed-smart-city-sounds-like-a-dystopian-nightmare/ A Google-backed project to build the interconnected, data-driven ‘city of the future’ sounds like all George Orwell’s nightmares come true, and is now in the spotlight after a privacy expert resigned from the project in protest.

Toronto’s Waterfront district used to be an industrial wasteland, but Sidewalk Labs – a sister company of Google – wants to turn that wasteland into a prototype ‘city of the future,’ where data helps planners micromanage every aspect of urban life. The planned Quayside neighborhood will house 5,000 people when built, expanding to host another 5,000 within three to four years, its creators say.

In running the neighborhood as efficiently as possible, Sidewalk Labs will utilize a range of innovative technologies. Sensors will manage street crowds and time traffic signals appropriately, cameras will watch over parks and public spaces, planners will be able to track the movement of every vehicle, person and drone, and garbage cans will monitor their owners’ trash to optimize waste management.

All of these data points will be fed into a database Sidewalk Labs calls its ‘Digital Layer,’ used by planners to monitor and tweak the neighborhood’s running, and then stored in a repository it calls the ‘Civic Data Trust.’ Nobody will own the data stored in the trust, and the trust’s board will decide who can access it.

That’s where the problems begin. Sidewalk Labs’ privacy consultant Ann Cavoukian had requested that the company scrub the residents’ data of all personal information, a request that Sidewalk Labs agreed to. However, the company said it would not require other parties with access to the trust to ‘de-identify’ any data collected, it would only “encourage” them to.

“When I heard that, I said, ‘I’m sorry. I can’t support this. I have to resign because you committed to embedding privacy by design into every aspect of your operation,’” Cavoukian told Global News, before severing her ties with the company on Friday.

Furthermore, Sidewalk Labs will allow third parties to build apps that plug into the digital layer, potentially giving them access to residents’ most intimate information. Your every move, your shopping list, the places you frequent, the events you attend and even the contents of your trash could all be fair game for third-party developers.

Cavoukian called the visionary project a “city of surveillance,” but she is not the only expert who finds the plan terrifying. Former Blackberry co-CEO Jim Balsillie called the project “a colonizing experiment in surveillance capitalism,” and TechGirls Canada founder Saadia Muzaffar left her role on a Sidewalk Labs advisory panel earlier this month, saying she had “profound concerns” about the company’s “lack of leadership regarding shaky public trust.”

And why should the public trust a Google-connected company with its data? Google already keeps extensive records on its users. Every journey made with an Android phone, every YouTube video watched, data from every app downloaded, and sound and images from laptop microphones and cameras are all available to the tech giant by default.

All of this data is kept by Google, unless of course the government requests that Google hands it over – which US government agencies have done over 20,000 times in the first half of 2018, with over 80 percent of requests fulfilled.

Whatever about the government, at least private companies can’t access Google’s treasure trove of personal data, right? Wrong. Google told US senators in July that it lets app developers share user data with marketers for the purposes of ad-targeting “so long as they are transparent with the users about how they are using the data.” This notice can be seen in a pop-up box when a user installs an app, or can be buried in the app’s privacy statement.

With google already enjoying unfettered access to your digital life, Sidewalk Labs’ Toronto project looks set to extend that access into your physical life too. No wonder experts like Cavoukian are troubled by the privacy implications.

“Your personal information, your privacy is critical. It is not just a fundamental human right. It forms the foundation of our freedom,” she said.

Or, as Apple CEO Tim Cook put it at an EU-sponsored privacy conference in Belgium this week: “Data assembled to create a digital profile lets companies know you better than you know yourself. This is surveillance.”

7 sounds your cat makes and what they mean https://briefnews.eu/7-sounds-your-cat-makes-and-what-they-mean/ https://briefnews.eu/7-sounds-your-cat-makes-and-what-they-mean/#respond Wed, 17 Oct 2018 07:45:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/7-sounds-your-cat-makes-and-what-they-mean/ catsPhoto by Carl Court/Getty Images

From chirps to meows to purrs, cats make an amazing range of noises.

For the most part, cats meow or growl as a way to communicate with other animals or humans. Whether there’s a bird outside the window or a lack of food in the bowl, a cat will probably have something to say about it.

On the other hand, cats make certain sounds for self-soothing purposes, or to provide comfort for other cats or humans. There’s a whole range of reasons why cats purr or meow, and it’s fascinating to learn more about this animal’s wide range of sounds.

For creatures without the ability to speak, cats are very talented at communicating their wants and needs. We rounded up some of their most common sounds and what they mean.

Meows are saved for humans.

The most easily identifiable cat sound, meows can have a ton of different meanings.

In the wild, kittens meow when they’re cold or hungry to get the mother cat’s attention, as explained by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Generally, though, adult cats don’t meow much to one another.

On the other hand, adult cats meow to communicate with humans pretty frequently. In fact, cats meow at people to say hello, ask for attention, or demand food, as further noted by the ASPCA.

Chances are, cat guardians will learn to distinguish an individual cat’s meows. There’s a difference between the plaintive, high-pitched cry for food, and the bright, chirpy sound they make as a greeting.

Cats purr for some good or bad reasons.

Although it’s another common cat noise, there’s something mysterious about the purr. The low, rumbling sound so associated with happy cats has a variety of meanings and purposes, too.

Mother cats purr to attract kittens, which are born blind and deaf, as noted in Cat Behavior Associates. The vibrations from this rumbly sound lead kittens to snuggle next to mom for warmth and food.

Later on in life, cats may purr when they’re happy, anxious, or sick, as further noted by Cat Behavior Associates. Cats have even been known to purr in an attempt to soothe themselves or someone else, including humans.

But there is a communication angle to purring as well. In fact, a certain type of purr has similar frequency peaks to the cry of an infant, according to Karen McComb’s study, “The cry embedded within the purr,” in a 2009 issue of Current Biology. This may show that cats are purring in a very specific way to manipulate people, most likely for a can of cat food.

A hiss is usually not a good thing.

Like the sound of air escaping a tire, a cat’s hiss is unmistakable. It is the cat’s clear message to back off.

For the most part, cats hiss when they are frightened or unhappy, and it’s often the final warning sound before the claws and teeth come out, as explained in Animal Planet. A hissing cat is probably not far from striking out at whatever is upsetting it, whether that’s a dog or the vacuum cleaner nozzle.

Plus, some animal experts theorize that cats learned how to hiss by imitating snakes, as further explained in Animal Planet. A snake’s hiss is a pretty universally scary noise in the animal kingdom, and it also means the reptile is feeling threatened and ready to fight. Maybe cats borrowed this noise for similar reasons.

Analogue’s Mega Sg sounds like the ultimate Sega Genesis https://briefnews.eu/analogues-mega-sg-sounds-like-the-ultimate-sega-genesis/ https://briefnews.eu/analogues-mega-sg-sounds-like-the-ultimate-sega-genesis/#respond Tue, 16 Oct 2018 15:11:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/analogues-mega-sg-sounds-like-the-ultimate-sega-genesis/

Analogue, the retro console manufacturer behind the Nt Mini and Super Nt, excellent modern NES and SNES reproductions, is now bringing back a seminal ’90s rival. The company has announced the Mega Sg, a Sega Genesis, Mega Drive and Master System recreation that can play over 2,180 classic cartridges.

Unlike other retro console clones, Analogue, as its name suggests, doesn’t use emulation methods. Rather, the company opts to use an Altera Cyclone V FPGA chip to ensure 100 percent compatibility — and so that games can be played exactly how they were intended. It’s not the exact chip used in the Genesis, but using an FPGA chip that runs off HDL (hardware description language), it can essentially be any other chip. It’s a solution that bypasses emulation through an operating system, to connect and speak directly between game cartridge and motherboard.

And yes, for you chiptune fans, the Mega Sg will also have the Yamaha YM2612 sound chip on board so that Michael Jackson’s composition of Marble Garden Zone from Sonic 3 will have that same synthpop keytar flare you remember.

Analogue’s dedication to retro accuracy doesn’t mean that you’ll have to pull out your CRT to play. The Mega SG will output to a modern display via HDMI and will upscale to 1080p, again, without input lag.

As for your copy of Sonic CD, the Mega Sg also is compatible with both the Sega CD and Mega CD. And if you still have old Genesis controllers, the Mega Sg has two ports up front — but matching wireless 8bitdo M30 controllers will also be available for purchase.

Systems from this time period had plenty of add-ons that were created in futile attempts to prolong a console’s life cycle. To ensure that no stone was left unturned, Analogue will recreate cartridge adapters for Sega’s Mark III, Game Gear, Sega MyCard, SG-1000 and SC-3000. These adapters will be coming sometime in 2019.

The Mega SG will be region free, can be updated via SD card and includes a host of video output features like scanline options, scaler options, horizontal position adjust and horizontal and vertical stretch. Pre-orders for the Mega Sg start today and will ship in March of 2019 for $ 189.

Lung cancer symptoms: If your voice sounds like this it could indicate the disease https://briefnews.eu/lung-cancer-symptoms-if-your-voice-sounds-like-this-it-could-indicate-the-disease/ https://briefnews.eu/lung-cancer-symptoms-if-your-voice-sounds-like-this-it-could-indicate-the-disease/#respond Sat, 22 Sep 2018 18:33:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lung-cancer-symptoms-if-your-voice-sounds-like-this-it-could-indicate-the-disease/

Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious types of cancer.

Over 44,000 people are diagnosed with the lung disease every year in the UK.

In the early stages of lung cancer, there are usually no signs or symptoms.

However, as the disease progresses, many people will eventually develop symptoms.

One symptom to look out for is hoarseness in the voice.

A sudden hoarse voice could mean many different things, but if combined with other symptoms of lung cancer, you should see your GP.

This is especially important if hoarseness has lasted three weeks or more.

The main symptoms of lung cancer include a cough that doesn’t go away after two or three weeks or a long-standing cough that gets worse, persistent chest infections and coughing up blood.

Other main symptoms include pain when breathing or coughing, persistent breathlessness, persistent tiredness or lack of energy, and loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss.

The NHS advises seeing your GP if any of these symptoms are present.

Other less common symptoms of lung cancer include wheezing and persistent chest or shoulder pain.

Fever, difficulty or pain swallowing, changes in the appearance of the fingers, and swelling of the face or neck, are also less common symptoms.

“If you have any of these symptoms, it‘s important to have them checked by your GP,” said Macmillan.

“Some of these symptoms can be caused by other conditions or by smoking. Lung cancer is occasionally diagnosed by chance when a person is having tests for another condition.”

As symptoms usually only appear once the cancer has spread through the lungs or into other parts of the body, it may often only be detected once the disease has progressed quite far.

This means the outlook for the condition isn’t as good as many other types of cancer.

Overall, about one in three people with the condition live for at least a year after they’re diagnosed, while about one in 20 people live at least 10 years.

“However, survival rates can vary widely, depending on how far the cancer has spread at the time of diagnosis. Early diagnosis can make a big difference,” said the NHS.

Lung cancer mainly affects older people and is rare in those under the age of 40. It is most common in people aged 70 to 74.

Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer, accounting for over 85 per cent of cases, however it is possible to develop the disease even if you have never smoked.
