Congressman Matt Gaetz preemptively sought a presidential pardon relating to an ongoing investigation into whether he sex trafficked a 17-year-old, according to reporting by The Washington Post.
Sources familiar with the testimony told The Washington Post that Johnny McEntee, a staffer in the Donald Trump White House, told the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack he received the request from Rep. Gaetz around the time of the siege on the Capitol.
McEntee testified Gaetz told him he was aware of an investigation being launched into his conduct and that "he did not do anything wrong but they are trying to make his life hell, and you know, if the president could give him a pardon, that would be great," The Washington Post reported. McEntee also testified Gaetz said he asked White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows for a pardon.
The Department of Justice probe into whether Gaetz had a sexual relationship with an underage girl and paid her to travel with him was first reported in 2021 and continues to be investigated.
Gaetz has not been charged with any crime and has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
"Congressman Matt Gaetz discussed pardons for many other people publicly and privately at the end of President Donald Trump's first term," a spokesman for Rep. Gaetz told Insider in an email. "As for himself, President Trump addressed this malicious rumor more than a year ago stating, 'Congressman Matt Gaetz has never asked me for a pardon.' Rep. Gaetz continues to stand by President Trump's statement."
The spokesperson did not respond to questions about whether Gaetz denied the conversations about pardons with McEntee or Meadows occurred.
The GOP congressman, one of 20 Republicans to vote against reauthorizing a sex-trafficking law in July, has received ongoing support from former President Trump relating to the investigation, despite Trump's comments calling for death to human traffickers.

]]>The report on Saif al-Islam’s contacts with the Kremlin is part of a larger story about Russia’s role in the war-torn country, which was disintegrated after the NATO-backed uprising toppled Gaddafi in 2011. The long-time leader was summarily executed while his son Saif al-Islam spent years as a prisoner of militias in the western Libyan city of Zintan. The younger Gaddafi has long declared his intention to run for Libyan presidency.
“Our position is that no one should be isolated and excluded from a constructive political role,” Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told RIA Novosti on Monday, in response to the report. “Saif al-Islam has the backing of specific tribes in Libya and all this should be part of the overall political process.”
According to Bloomberg, Russian diplomats spoke to Saif al-Islam via a video link shortly after his release by the militias in 2017. His representative also spoke to Bogdanov in early December, explaining Gaddafi’s vision for the future of Libya and asking for support, the agency added. Russian officials would not comment on the claims.
Bogdanov said that Moscow keeps contact with various groups in the country as part of the peace settlement process.
Libya remains in turmoil almost a decade after the Western intervention . Its UN-recognized government in Tripoli controls only a small portion of the country and has to keep local militias satisfied to keep them on their side. Another center of power in the east is in control of Libyan oil fields, but has to negotiate terms of crude exports with the government to conduct the business legally. There are also numerous tribal factions deeper in the south, arms smugglers, human traffickers, jihadist fighters and other forces.
The plan to hold a presidential election this year was postponed due to continued struggling between Libya’s two rival governments and is now scheduled for next year.
In November the head of the Russian contact group on intra-Libyan settlement, Lev Dengov, said that Saif al-Islam is part of the political process in the country as there are people who support everything that is related to Gaddafi as their lives were better then.

WikiLeaks has denied claims that its founder Julian Assange sought a Russian visa in 2010 amid sexual misconduct allegations.
A report, published by Associated Press (AP) as an exclusive based on leaked WikiLeaks documents, alleges that Assange wrote to the Russian consulate in London to give an associate of his permission to facilitate the visa process for him.
“I, Julian Assange, hereby grant full authority to my friend, Israel Shamir, to both drop off and collect my passport, in order to get a visa,” the letter stated, according to AP.
AP says the letter is part of a trove of WikiLeaks emails, chat logs, financial records, secretly recorded footage and other documents that has been leaked to it.
WikiLeaks has vehemently denied the claims, however, stating that Assange did not write the document or apply for such a visa at any stage.
Mr. Assange did not apply for such a visa at any time or author the document. The source is document fabricator & paid FBI informant Sigurdur Thordarson who was sentenced to prison for fabricating docs impersonating Assange, multiple frauds & pedophilllia. https://t.co/xzMfhctFx4
— WikiLeaks (@wikileaks) September 17, 2018
The whistleblowing organisation claimed the source of the files was Sigurdur Thordarson, a former Wikileaks volunteer, who passed a trove of data on Wikileaks to the FBI and embezzled money from WikiLeaks by impersonating Assange.
Thordarson was ordered to pay WikiLeaks 7 million ISK (roughly $ 55,000) and sentenced to prison for 2 years for embezzlement and financial fraud in 2014. He was also sentenced to three years in prison in 2015 for sexually assaulting nine boys on multiple occasions.
AP claims that it confirmed the authenticity of some documents by running them by five former WikiLeaks associates who spoke on condition of anonymity. Others were verified using non-public details such as bank accounts, telephone numbers or airline tickets.
Metadata suggests the letter to the consulate was drafted on November 29 – the day after the release of the first batch of US State Department files, AP reported. The news agency could not confirm, however whether the message was delivered.
Shamir told AP in a phone interview that his memory was not clear. “I can’t possibly exclude that it happened. I have a very vague memory of those things.”

Ebay is a terrific online platform for finding and selling rare coins, and certain coin types prove particularly rare among collectors.
While to the average person a £2 coin might not look like anything special, certain designs are sought after.
A £2 coin selling for £1,300 on eBay right now is a great example of this.
The listing, put up by user mehmetikiz2012, currently has 22 people watching it.
The £2 coin is said to have a particularly rare Magna Carta design on it.
The description reads: “Magna Carta. 1215-2015. Very rare £2 two pound coin.
“800 years anniversary. Rare collectors item. Super condition. Only a few in the United Kingdom.”
So what is so special about this design? The design features a king with a scroll and a quill in his hand.
The official Royal Mint website paints more of a picture about this much coveted coin design.
The description reads: “Drawn up over 800 years ago, the Magna Carta was a catalyst for a journey towards freedom for the ordinary man, in the United Kingdom and across the world.
“We marked this historic moment with a coin struck in celebration of the Magna Carta – the charter of freedoms.”
The edge inscription of the coin is said to read “Foundation of liberty”.
The designer of the reverse designer was John Bergdahl, and the mintage is TBC.
Last month, a rare Battle of Britain 50p coin was selling for £1,000 on eBay.
The coin was created to commemorate the 1940 Battle of Britain, when the country was at risk of being invaded.
The design on the coin features a dramatic scene of three soldiers running towards barbed wire.
Fighter planes soar overhead through the sky, and the words ’The Battle of Britain’ are clear in the middle of the coin, with the date 1940 below.
The listing, created by greeneyes_2013, currently has 18 watchers on the buying and selling forum, and the seller has 100 per cent positive feedback.
The Royal Mint website provides more information about this and what makes it special among collectors.
It says: “In the summer of 1940 Britain faced the threat of invasion. It would fall to brave young pilots, and their crews, to protect the country’s defences – the Battle of Britain had begun.
“75 years later, we honoured the few with a commemorative 50p, the only official United Kingdom coin to be struck for the anniversary.”
The UK’S intelligence security agency GCHQ sought to open a special communication channel with its own watchdog, court letters have revealed, sparking claims it is seeking to “bury embarrassing evidence” of its own activities.
The government’s monitoring agency in Cheltenham wrote to Sir Adrian Fulford, the investigatory powers commissioner, asking if an “appropriate process or protocol” could be set up to “better liaise” with his office.
It comes as the investigatory powers tribunal hears legal challenges brought up by civil rights groups – Privacy International, Liberty, and others – against the intelligence agency. The case revolves around the agency’s snooping and retaining of people’s sensitive information.
Millie Graham Wood, a solicitor at Privacy International, said: “It is extraordinary that GCHQ has written to its independent regulator to ask if it and ‘wider government’ can work together, essentially to head off legal claims. It is a blatant attempt to bury embarrassing evidence and claims against them.”
Fulford, an appeal court judge as well as head of the Investigatory Powers Commissioner’s Office (IPCO), dismissed the GCHQ approach, informing the agency: “I do not anticipate any situation where that engagement could be the subject of any form of prior agreement, however transparent, especially with a party which is subject to my oversight.”
A GCHQ spokesperson responded by saying: “We take our obligations to our oversight bodies seriously and, as demonstrated by the correspondence, support the IPCO’s independence.”
Claims of GCHQ and the armed forces being closely tied were also substantiated by documents seen by the court, as they confirm that a permanent military detachment operates out of GCHQ headquarters in Cheltenham.
“Members of the military unit embedded in the monitoring agency come from all the main branches of the armed forces,” the documents read, according to the Guardian.
“There is a one-star senior officer – a rank equivalent to brigadier – who acts as senior military adviser to the director of GCHQ. The unit’s role covers gathering and handling intelligence.”
The intelligence service, however, fell short of stating whether it had intervened in RAF drone attacks which assassinated two British citizens in Syria in 2015. Amid an apparent lack of evidence to justify the attacks, the UK government was accused by civil liberties groups of operating a US-style ‘kill list.’

The NSA has been steadily shedding staff ever since the agency introduced draconian internal rules to stop potential new Snowden-inspired whistleblowers, former NSA technical director William Binney told RT.
“The NSA has launched an internal program called ‘See something, say something,’” Binney, told RT, explaining that the new internal code of conduct encourages the agency’s employees to actually spy not only on their targets but also on their fellow colleagues. The aim of this new measures were to prevent employees from becoming “another Edward Snowden,” he said.
However, the new draconian rules actually backfired as employees started leaving the agency in droves with few people willing to fill their positions. The new rules “create a very hostile, bad working environment,” Binney said. He added that the extreme precautionary measures taken by the NSA to prevent internal leaks after Snowden’s move “destroyed the moral of people doing work there.”
This new system also created a situation, in which some employees could exploit the new directives to settle old scores with their colleagues, the former technical director said. Everyone, who “had a grudge” or was waging “a personal vendetta” against another employee could just “go and say something about their colleagues without giving their [own] names, report them for something just to get them into trouble.”
This new system has, however, been not the only factor that influenced the workforce exodus. Many NSA employees were also uncomfortable with the NSA policies in general, as it involved “spying on US citizens and spying on everyone on the planet,” Binney pointed out. Heavy workload was another reason to quit, he said, adding, that the employees sometimes complained they just “could not figure the things out” or because they had too much data to analyze.

And as the NSA gets increasingly entangled into the anti-Russian witch hunt, which Binney described as a “fake Russia-gate thing,” public distrust towards the agency continues to grow. He went on to say the NSA continues to discredit itself with its political bias and “corruption.”
The former NSA technical director-turned whistleblower also said the agency was not visibly “succeeding in stopping terrorism in any way” but was increasingly “engaging in illegal activities” and “violating the US constitution.”
