We fans of The Walking Dead like to think that nothing can trip up beloved badass Carol. But in Sunday’s “Ghosts,” her grief, combined with a newfound fondness for caffeine pills and a desperate need to serve Alpha her just desserts, led the heroine to stumble — so much so that, by the end of the hour, her friends were beginning to question whether she was seeing things. And she wasn’t the only one of our survivors who had a rough week. Read on, and we’ll review all of their hardships and heartaches. ‘PEANUT BUTTER, MEET JELLY’ | As “Ghosts” began, we sped through more than two days’ worth of walker onslaughts, just herd after herd lumbering up to Alexandria’s gates. Just when it seemed like the good guys might drop from exhaustion, Gamma showed up and ordered the community’s leaders to the north border for a powwow with Alpha. Before Michonne, Daryl and Carol departed with some B players, they held a heated town meeting, at which Lydia argued that the constant walker marches weren’t her mother’s doing. “If she wanted you dead, she’d send the horde — all of it, not just a few waves at a time.” So, off Michonne went, intending to comply with Alpha’s instructions to lay down her arms for their talk at the border. Carol, on the other hand, brought her gun as if she planned to fire rather than surrender it. Or maybe she just seemed extra intense because she was popping caffeine pills like they were Chiclets. Meanwhile, since most of Alexandria’s fighters were pooped to the nth, Gabriel ordered Negan to pitch in and help Aaron break up the southern wave of walkers before it reached Alexandria. Neither of them was keen on it, but the preacher wasn’t taking no for an answer. In the field, though Negan was itching to trade his weapon — was that an actual, literal broomstick? — for a crowbar he happened upon, Aaron wouldn’t allow it despite the fact that he himself was wearing a wicked-cool mace on the end of his stump. Later, after the Saviors’ former leader used the crowbar, anyway, the fellas got into it in a big way. In backhanded fashion, Negan blamed Aaron for Eric’s death, and Aaron, in turn, suggested that he’d failed his wife. Tense as it was, Negan still warned Aaron of an approaching walker, though he wound up being blinded by hogweed growing out of the reanimated corpse. En route back to Alexandria, Daryl admitted to Michonne that Carol hadn’t been herself since she got off that fishing boat. And she wouldn’t be getting any more herself anytime soon, either, it seemed. She saw — or thought she saw — Whisperers lurking about. Since Michonne & Co. couldn’t find any, Carol’s pill-popping was called into question. Shortly, the group holed up at an abandoned school, where Carol imagined the family on the cover of a home-ec book being transformed into herself, Lizzie, Mika, Sam and Henry. (Helluva throwback, TWD!) As Carol’s turn on watch neared its conclusion, Daryl told her a story about how his trucker dad had often gone long stretches without sleeping — and had wound up hallucinating a girl in the road. Only after being haunted in the halls by Henry did Carol learn that Daryl’s father hadn’t been a truck driver at all — she was spiraling down the rabbit hole. That conversation had never happened. Back in Alexandria, Eugene let slip that he’d only spent the night fighting walkers alongside Rosita to protect her. “I taught you how to fight,” she noted before realizing what he really meant. “You and I are never going to happen — I need you to hear that.” And at last, it seemed to sink in, as deeply as a dagger to his heart. In what he called “a crushing moment of clarity,” he admitted that their “whole friendship [was] premised on my mistaken belief that I could someday change your mind” and get “re-zoned to love town.” Outside, Michonne, then Dante, checked on Siddiq, who looked as shell-shocked as… well, he was. As for Carol, she woke up to a decidedly Ozzie and Harriet scenario that found Daryl cooking breakfast and Henry at the table. It was, of course, a dream. When she actually went downstairs, she instead found Michonne, who remained skeptical that she’d seen any Whisperers. Did Daryl believe her? Carol later asked her bestie. And at least he did. Finally, as the episode drew to a close, we saw that among the felled walkers at the gym was one Whisperer, alive and well. He or she was masked, but unless I miss my guess, it was Gamma. So, what did you think of “Ghosts”? Carol’s interpretation of the caffeine-pill episode of Saved by the Bell? Alpha’s unsettling willingness to forgive and let live? That amazing book jacket? Hit the comments. RELATED STORIES
‘WE ARE ALWAYS WATCHING’ | At the border meeting with Alpha, all of the good guys gave up their weapons except for Carol, who kept her gun hidden, just in case. At first, it seemed to go OK. Though the Whisperers’ leader knew that our heroes had crossed her border three times — in addition to the fire, once during winter and once in Season 10’s premiere — “I consider context,” she said, so “there will be no bloodshed this time.” Instead, she wanted additional land — land that would cut off the protagonists’ hunting grounds. When Carol scoffed, saying they didn’t have to listen to this bulls—, and refused to be intimidated by Alpha, the villainess brought up “the blond boy” who’d screamed his mother’s name before his beheading. At that, Carol pulled her gun and fired, missing only because Michonne intervened. Still, Alpha forgave her, mother to mother. But “this is my land now,” she added. “You better run.”
‘YOU WERE MEAN AS A MAMA WASP OUT THERE’ | Later — and this wasn’t a dream — Carol fell into a booby trap in the gymnasium and wound up hanging upside down as at least one Whisperer and a bunch of walkers approached. She managed to cut herself down but was left with a shard of glass sticking out of her arm. So her pals rushed her to Siddiq for treatment. Only he was still having visions himself — of his experience as a nearly-beheaded prisoner of the Whisperers. Luckily, Dante was around to lend a steady hand. Meanwhile, Aaron managed to stumble into the same building as Negan. And though the show made it appear that the “reformed” baddie was contemplating whacking his companion, he actually saved him from walkers and explained what had caused his (temporary) blindness. So by morning, it appeared that Aaron had a new appreciation for Negan.

I don’t think Microsoft is going to acquire Electronic Arts, but that rumor is attracting a lot of attention today after appearing in a Polygon report about Microsoft’s plans to beef up its roster of exclusive games. EA’s stock price ended trading today up 2.13 percent on the speculation, and that gives it a $ 36.23 billion market capitalization. That’s a lot of money, and yeah — Microsoft is probably not going to use a significant chunk of its $ 130 billion war chest on that deal.
But I can’t help thinking that, in a few ways, this deal makes a lot of sense. Again, I don’t think it will happen, but here’s why it could:
Since 2012, Electronic Arts’ stock price has climbed steadily with only a handful of speed bumps along the way. The publisher has a roster of reliable blockbuster hits like Battlefield, Madden NFL, FIFA, and the Star Wars license. It also has a strong digital business that generates revenues from in-game purchases across PC, console, and mobile.
You could assume that EA’s stock price will continue to climb, which would make most of its shareholders hesitate to sell to Microsoft. And we’ll probably discover over the next couple of years that you’re right. But I have some doubts.
With the release of Star Wars: Battlefront II, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Need For Speed: Payback, the publisher is in the beginning of a lull. It won’t have many more chances to prove itself outside of its sports games until the next Battlefield and BioWare’s Anthem. And Battlefront II, Mass Effect, and Need For Speed have all given investors reasons to want to see how EA will course correct in the future.
Star Wars and Need For Speed kicked off a massive controversy about pay-to-win mechanics and gambling-like lootbox items. Players lashed out at EA and the games, and they drew the attention of regulators in Hawaii and Belgium. Mass Effect, meanwhile, was panned by critics and fans, and it has left BioWare in a desperate position.
Following those missteps, EA’s stock fell, but it has since recovered. The market is essentially saying that it thinks EA should recover with its next slate of games.
But what if it doesn’t? Anthem is BioWare’s attempt at a Destiny-style online action adventure, and it has never done anything like that before — although EA did try to get BioWare to chase after the MMO space with Star Wars: The Old Republic with mixed results. BioWare is also still working with the Frostbite engine that has caused it headaches with Dragon Age: Inquisition and Mass Effect: Andromeda.
The tick-tock release cadence of Star Wars: Battlefront and Battlefield games likely means we’ll get a new one this year. My bet is still on Battlefield 2 set during World War II. Battlefield games have always sold well, but it is going to enter a shooter market with competition from PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite: Battle Royale. Those last-player-standing shooters didn’t hold back Call of Duty: WWII, but that doesn’t mean Battlefield is immune.
So it feels like EA is in a place where selling might make sense if one or two more blunders could send its stock price plummeting.
OK. So EA may want to sell, but why would Microsoft want EA? How could it ever spend $ 36 billion (plus a premium) to acquire a game company?
I think the answer to that is Game Pass.
Last week, Xbox boss Phil Spencer posted a blog revealing that every new Microsoft-published game going forward will hit its $ 10-per-month Netflix-like game-subscription service on the day of their release. That means, on March 20, you can start playing Sea of Thieves for just $ 10. People have said a lot about how this is a desperation move for a company that lags far behind its PlayStation competition, and maybe that has lit a fire under its ass. But this seems like it is right in line with Microsoft’s decade-long shift into a services company.
Microsoft has failed repeatedly to build a competitor to Steam on the PC. The Windows 10 store doesn’t have any momentum as a gaming platform, and it may never compete with Valve Software’s digital service.
But the gaming market has a Netflix-shaped hole in it, and Microsoft has a chance to fill it before anyone else does. To do a subscription service that has the mass appeal of Netflix, however, Microsoft doesn’t just need content — it needs to own and produce its own content.
Electronic Arts’ could give Microsoft more than enough regular content to give people a reason to keep their subscriptions even if they finish the game they signed up for.
EA also has its Steam competitor Origin with millions of users, and its own EA Access subscription service. EA Access gives people an instant library of its games on Xbox. The last I heard, the Xbox version alone had more than a million subscribers and now it has the Origin Access version on PC.
These are all services that Microsoft could integrate into its own products, or it could let EA run as a separate brand.
Finally, EA and Microsoft are a good match because they have overlapping audiences. The two companies have had a close relationship throughout this generation. And even with PlayStation 4’s lead, Xbox One owners continue to spend a lot of money on games.
If Microsoft suddenly has Battlefield, Anthem, and FIFA exclusively on its service, that would keep fans happy about spending $ 500 on an Xbox One X. And it should convince people across console and PC to subscribe to Game Pass.
This is a better fit than a Japanese company, since fans of those games are unlikely to exit the PlayStation ecosystem.
And then on top of EA’s games, it also has the institutional knowledge about running a games as a service and generating revenues from post-release support. So even if most people are only paying $ 10 per month to play new games, some players could spend a lot more on microtransactions.
I think this acquisition makes a lot of sense … if you ignore all the ways it’s unthinkable. The biggest reason this won’t happen is that Microsoft would be making a $ 36-billion bet on gaming, and that’s money it could put on something safer.
I can envision a future where this works out, but if it doesn’t … that’s a lot of money. It’s too much … but what if?
Guppy will have players swimming through a watercolor sea, looking for scraps of food to nibble on as they play with their other schools that are in the pond alongside them.
Guppy puts players in control of a fish looking for its next meal, having them swim through the waters to find something to eat. To propel themselves toward that food, players will need to wiggle their tail back and forth to gain momentum, wiggling their way toward what they want.
It’s about more than keeping the fish fed, though, as there are larger fish out there who are looking to make a meal out of the player as well. To avoid them, players can hide under lily pads, but they’ll need to get the hang out of controlling themselves with their tail in order to be able to hide quickly.
While not getting eaten can be stressful at times, Guppy offers a calming, pretty experience of just being a fish and sailing through still waters, embracing the touches of color and beauty throughout a pond.
Guppy is available for $ 2.99 on Itch.io, Steam, Google Play, and the App Store. For more information about the game and developer ninjadodogames, they can head to the developer’s site, the game’s site, or follow them on YouTube and Twitter.

I fancy a good cat mystery like anyone, but Mindhunter‘s Season 1 feline brain-teaser had me clawing my eyes out. The curiosity was killing me, I tell ya! So I tracked down the woman at the center of the kitten cliffhanger — Mindhunter‘s leading lady Anna Torv — to get her purrrrrspective on the perplexing pussy plot.
Anyway, with all that to be done, it’s hard to imagine how we’ll ever get around to listening to a new Sam Smith song. But, y’know, help yourself:

Bryce Dallas Howard has directed several short films, plays, and an M-83 music video throughout her career. She’s yet to direct a feature film, though. The star of Pete’s Dragon and Jurassic World spent years working on a Big Chill-esque project called The Originals, which she wrote in 2009 with her writing partner/brother-in-law Dane Charbonneau, but it’s yet to come to fruition. Howard has now lined up another possible feature directorial debut, Sorta Like a Rock Star, based on Matthew Quick‘s (“Silver Linings Playbook”) novel of the same name.
Below, learn more about the potential Bryce Dallas Howard directorial debut.
According to Variety, the project was originally set up at Fox Searchlight. There’s currently no distributor, but if Sorta Like a Rock Star moves forward, Howard will direct it. The story is about an optimistic high school student Amber Appleton living in a bus. During her senior year, an altercation at home leads to her living in her mom’s school bus. It’s just Amber, her mom, and their dog, Bobby Big Boy, together.
Here’s the book’s synopsis:
Amber Appleton lives in a bus. Ever since her mom’s boyfriend kicked them out, Amber, her mom, and her totally loyal dog, Bobby Big Boy (aka Thrice B) have been camped out in the back of Hello Yellow (the school bus her mom drives). But Amber, the self-proclaimed princess of hope and girl of unyielding optimism, refuses to sweat the bad stuff. Instead, she focuses on bettering the lives of her alcoholic mother and her quirky circle of friends: a glass-ceiling-breaking single mother raising a son diagnosed with autism; Father Chee and The Korean Divas for Christ (soul-singing ESL students); a nihilist octogenarian; a video-game-playing gang of outcasts; and a haiku-writing war vet. But then a fatal tragedy threatens Amber’s optimism—and her way of life. Can Amber continue to be the princess of hope?
Over a year ago, Miguel Arteta (The Good Girl) was attached to direct with a script from Ol Parker (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel). Whether Howard is sticking with Parker’s script isn’t mentioned in Variety’s report. Over the years, Howard has done great work in front of the camera, but she’s been directing for a while now. She first directed a play, No Exit, and later on, a production of Kenneth Lonergan’s This is Our Youth with her husband. Since then, in addition to directing shorts and Lilly Collins in M-83’s “Claudia Lewis” video, she’s supported aspiring filmmakers with Canon’s “Long Live Imagination” campaign – a contest involving making a short based on a series of photos.
Here’s the short she directed collaborating with Cannon:

Don’t bother trying to harness your excitement, Gilmore Girls fans: Lauren Graham will indeed make a guest appearance (or two or three) in Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s upcoming ninth season.
“It was fantastic,” Graham shares, adding that she worked with series creator and star Larry David “almost exclusively” during her multi-episode arc. “There really is no greater joy than actually making Larry David laugh. And he really laughs hard.”
On Curb, which is slated to return this fall after a six-year-hiatus, the Bad Santa actress plays “someone who has very colorful language,” Graham teases. It was her first gig after wrapping Netflix’s Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life and, as she explains, “It was the perfect answer to ‘What do I do now?!’ because this character is completely not me at all. I speak in a way that I don’t speak ever.” (Given the legendary veil of secrecy that surrounds the HBO comedy, Graham is reticent to divulge much more than that.)
Curb‘s improvisational process made the role all the more challenging for Graham. “All you get is an outline and then you improvise around it,” she explains, before recalling a scene she shared with David and Curb staple Ted Danson in which the Good Place actor “was like, ‘This is cable. You can really [let loose]. Think of the craziest thing possible.” And my brain so doesn’t work that way.”
For more on Graham’s Curb stint — as well as her reflections on the Gilmore Girls revival and her ill-fated Linda From HR pilot — keep your eyes peeled for the special LG-focused installment of TVLine’s about-to-launch podcast.
