RuthAnne Cunningham told Means Happy that different parts of 2013’s Work B**ch were put together by different writers – and that she was only told Spears had recorded it four days before it was released.

Surprisingly, when it was put together, she had absolutely no idea who – if anyone – would end up singing it.

“I came up with the melody parts, the ‘hold your head high, fingers to the sky’ section, for example. All the bits in the song that are sung,” she explained.

“I wasn’t there for the recording itself, but she definitely sings the melody parts in her way, if that makes sense, so it sounds very unmistakably ‘Britney’.

“I think she sounds great on it. I’m not sure where the British accent came from, but I love it.”

Speaking to the new LGBTQ+ website, she said of the moment she head who’d sung it: “A call came four days before it came out and it was played down the phone to me. I was like, wait, that’s our song; I know that voice – is that Britney Spears?!

“Then I was told it was the lead single for her new album and it was coming out in four days. I was like, s**t.

“I mean it’s every 13 year old’s dream, isn’t it?”

Spears is coming to the UK later in the year for some rare tour dates.

The jaunt comes after the closure of her Las Vegas residency Piece of Me, which broke records and became one of the most successful shows ever of its kind.

As for new music, Spears has long been rumoured to drop new material this year but that remains unconfirmed.

She released her most recent opus, Glory, back in 2013 – led by the single Make Me (Oooh).

Currently rumours are doing the rounds that she may collaborate with Panic! At The Disco, after Rock Sound reported them liking a tweet speculating on a duet.

Spears shot to fame in 1999 and has sold over 100 million records worldwide, and 28.6 million digital singles in the USA alone.

Spotify announced today that when listening through the desktop platform, users will now be able to view song credits. Starting now, right-clicking on a track and selecting “Show Credits” from the menu will bring up its performer, writer and producer credits as well as the source from which that info was provided. Spotify says that currently, those details have been compiled from record label-provided metadata and they may be incomplete in some cases, but going forward, the feature will become more functional and will use information from other sources.

Spotify hasn’t had a very smooth relationship with songwriters and artists in the past. It has agreed to multi-million dollar settlements in lawsuits that alleged it didn’t properly pay publishers and songwriters and in attempts to build more trust, it has limited its free streaming option and purchased a company that streamlines information on proprietary rights. Last year, Spotify also launched Secret Genius — a songwriter-focused initiative that includes an ambassador program, playlists, podcasts and an award show.

It’s a little surprising something as simple as credits took this long, and it’s probably not as good as higher royalties, but it’s a good move — one that Tidal also made in November — since everyone involved in creating a song deserves to have their work acknowledged. In a statement, Annika Goldman, Spotify’s director of music publishing operations, said, “The more we share information, the more opportunities we can help create for songwriters. This is just the beginning of making songwriter and producer credits more easily available to Spotify listeners, and we look forward to continually improving that information, in close collaboration with our music industry partners.”

The mechanical royalty rates from streaming—royalties paid out to songwriters and publishers, as distinct from those paid out to performers—will increase by nearly 44 percent over the next five years. This comes as a result of a ruling from the United States Copyright Royalty Board after hearings that were held from March through June of last year.

Currently, 10.5 percent of streaming services’ monthly gross revenue is assigned to be paid to songwriters and publishers; the payouts are determined by the number of streams in that period. That will rise each year until it reaches 15.1 percent in 2022. This year, the rate will be 11.4 percent; it will be 13.3 percent in 2020, and so on.

Songwriters and publishers have long claimed they’ve gotten the short end of the stick with regard to streaming music royalties. One songwriter, Nashville-based Kevin Kadish, claimed in 2015 that he received only $ 5,679 from 178 million Pandora streams. In 2016, the National Music Publishers’ Association settled a deal with Spotify to help music publishers and songwriters claim royalties, as the messiness of the current system has led to lawsuits and other negative outcomes.

Alison Moyet is best known for her bluesy singing voice after hitting the big time as one half of singing duo Yazoo. 

The 56-year-old is now a name in her own right filling stadiums across the country after promoting nine studio albums. 

While the singer stunned presenters Matt Baker and Alex Jones with her story of burning her past – quite literally – before moving house,  her weight loss was also notable. 

The English singer was previously heavier but has since lost the weight. 

Back in 2013, Alison told The Telegraph: “Personally I think women look better with a bit of chub on them.

“I’ve lost too much weight and I’m working on getting fatter again.”

Speaking about why she lost weight, the singer added: “It was a mixture of health reasons and not wanting to be looked after by the patronising thin.

“It’s funny as my whole character has been based upon not getting approval elsewhere. And I don’t like the kind of approval that goes with weight loss.”

Pictures from her past reveal Alison’s former look – in 1980 she sported a bleach blonde bob and a slightly curvier figure. 

Just 10 years ago, on The Paul O’Grady Show the singer revealed an hourglass figure in a low-cut dress. 

But last night on The One Show it was clear to see Alison’s keeping the weight off. 

She said: “I’m firmly middle-aged and not interested in a romantic narrative, so it’s just about watching people.”

“Photos, clothes, itineraries, just my successful history. It’s more stuff to clean. I just thought ‘enough!’ Having things is really tedious.”

BLAKE MILLS: HEIGH HO (Caroline International) My most recent discovery. A friend played me If I’m Unworthy and I was hooked. His writing is fantastic. I like how his mind works, his musicianship, the emotion he puts across, his restrained guitar playing that creates a lovely tension. And the production is phenomenal.

JOHN GRANT: QUEEN OF DENMARK (Bella Union) He breaks the rules, speaks his mind and is very poetic. He can write beautifully but cut to the bone too. Caramel is gorgeous and JC Hates Faggots tells about his childhood, growing up gay. I love albums that take you to different places.

BLONDIE: PARALLEL LINES (EMI) This is what I put on when I’m with girlfriends or in the car and want to sing. I love punk and it mixes that in with really catchy tunes, though it’s deeper than just that. Debbie Harry’s lyrics are amazing on Picture This and I love Hanging On The Telephone and Sunday Girl.

VIOLENT FEMMES: VIOLENT FEMMES (London) One of the best post-punk albums ever. The songwriting and production are great. When I fi rst heard it I thought it was a “best of” album because every song is so strong. Put it on in your car, roll your windows down and go for it.

TOM WAITS: THE HEART OF SATURDAY NIGHT (Atlantic) One of the kings of lyrics and I love the grit in his voice. You believe all he is saying, it’s so heartfelt. Shiver Me Timbers is one of my favourite songs. The album is rough around the edges yet perfect.

LEONARD COHEN: YOU WANT IT DARKER (Columbia) An all-time favourite. If you’re not crazy about his voice, read his lyrics. I love poetry and the songcraft is genius. This last album is so personal and beautiful. It sounds as though he’s examining his whole life and he talks with honesty and openness. It’s a spiritual album.

A few days after November 8 last year, Tim Heidecker, still cycling through anger and confusion, headed down to the basement of his home in Glendale, California, to write some music. “A song is the easiest delivery vehicle for an idea,” he said in a recent interview with BuzzFeed News.

At the time, Heidecker wasn’t anyone’s idea of a protest singer — in truth, he was barely known as a singer at all. As one half of the surrealist comedy duo Tim and Eric, he’d spent more than a decade onscreen, creating and inhabiting bizarre characters on cult-favorite Adult Swim shows like Tom Goes to the Mayor, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, and Decker, beloved by stoners and others with a high tolerance for supremely awkward humor. But a preoccupation with music has always sat just below the surface of Heidecker’s comedy — last spring, he released an album of acutely satirical songs about suburban fatherhood called In Glendale — and from his basement in November, he wrote the third in what became a running series of darkly comic battle hymns inspired by the rise of Donald Trump.

“They can take me down to the bowels of Trump Tower,” he wails in the song “Trump Tower,” over descending piano in the vein of Leon Russell. “And put me on the rack next to all of my brown and black brothers.”

Heidecker, a Pennsylvanian with a kind face that often plays against his characters’ derangements, is an unlikely comrade of an expanding universe of musicians, including stars like YG, Arcade Fire, and Katy Perry, who have endeavored to channel still-smoldering political anxieties into song. A deceptively skillful songwriter, he has recorded seven “Trump songs” in the past year — five since the election — stealing off to the basement or to the houses of musically inclined friends (like Jonathan Rado of psych-rock band Foxygen) in sporadic bursts of inspiration.

“As a fellow white straight man, I feel a responsibility to fight back.”

On “Mar-a-Lago,” released in late March, Heidecker uses President Trump’s extravagant Florida country club as a stand-in for the palm tree paradises once surveyed by Jimmy Buffett and the Beach Boys — with a comically rueful POTUS playing narrator and tour guide. For “A Note From Donald J. Trump’s Pilot,” he conjures a mordant murder-suicide fantasy in the form of an acoustic, Cat Stevens–like folk song. And two others, “I Am a Cuck” and “Richard Spencer,” offer improbably soulful sendups of the alt-right.

“I can’t explain what makes somebody that way,” Heidecker said of the pro-Trump white nationalist types like the ones who inspired “I Am a Cuck,” some of whom, disconcertingly, may be watching his shows. “But as a fellow white man, a white, straight man who’s had every opportunity … I feel a responsibility to occasionally, and hopefully creatively, fight back against that kind of guy out there. Because I want to say to them, ‘What the fuck are you doing? What are you doing with your life? Why don’t you be a positive force in the world instead of a piece of shit?’”

Singing truth to power isn’t a natural role for Heidecker, whose songs are more wickedly funny than traditional protest music, and more pointedly political than most musical comedy. But if liberals have felt like the past 12 months were transplanted from an alternate, funhouse universe where reality itself seems on the verge of a spectacular breakdown, it’s difficult to imagine a more fitting bard, able to chronicle and anticipate a succession of disorienting news cycles with a well-honed sense of the absurd.

Heidecker first began incorporating Trump into his stand-up comedy years ago, following the real estate mogul and The Celebrity Apprentice host’s flirtations with a presidential run in 2012. Onstage, he would embody what he calls an “obnoxious, right-wing, misogynistic piece of shit” who was eager for a businessman like Trump to take charge in Washington. Watching the raucous Trump rallies that dominated cable news during the 2016 election season, he was filled with a creeping sense of despair. On election night, he happened to be shooting Decker, a show in which he stars as a slow-witted, macho spy who believes he’s “the only one who can help [America] be free.”

“It was hard for all of us,” he said of the mood of the show’s crew as the results came in. “Everybody that we work with is kind of young and liberal-minded; a lot of women and a lot of artists. So we were totally shaken, and confused, and unmoored, and angry.”

Just as “Trump Tower” was born from a post-election fever dream, Heidecker has preferred to write and release subsequent Trump songs extemporaneously (“Mar-a-Lago” was hummed in the shower on a Saturday and posted to his Bandcamp page — with proceeds going to the Everglades Foundation — on Sunday night). But he says he intends to continue recording them for as long as the inspiration is there. Lately, his mind has circled around Trump’s provocative senior adviser and former Breitbart News executive Steve Bannon, whose last name he gratefully described as “kind of rhythmic.”

“It’s just always nice to have a point of view and kind of a reason to be writing a song,” Heidecker said. “Right now it feels like if you’re an artist and you’re not somehow talking about what’s going on in the world, then, I don’t know, you’re gonna look back and wonder what you were doing.”
