Friedman, an Orthodox Jew and an outspoken advocate for Israel’s claim to Jerusalem, came under attack for his alleged support of the Israeli settlement program. On Monday, Ambassador Friedman took to Twitter to blast the lack of condemnation by the Palestinian Authority (PA) for the two recent terror attacks in the West Bank and in the Old City of Jerusalem that left three Israelis dead. By referring to the West Bank as “the north,” Friedman drew strong criticism from the Palestinians over his unwillingness to recognize the status of the landlocked enclave as an occupied territory.
Tragedy in Israel. 2 young soldiers, Netanel Kahalani and Ziv Daos, murdered in the North, and father of 4, Adiel Kolman, murdered in Jerusalem, by Palestinian terrorists. Such brutality and no condemnation from the PA! I pray for the families and the wounded – so much sadness.
— David M. Friedman (@USAmbIsrael) March 19, 2018
Criticizing Washington’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, Abbas slammed the US official for sharing the position as US President Donald Trump, who “views the settlements as legitimate.”
“The ambassador, David Friedman, said they’re building on their own land. You son of a dog, building on their own land?! You are a settler and your family are settlers!” Abbas said in response to Friedman’s criticism of the PA on Monday, as cited by Reuters.
The verbal exchange between Abbas and Friedman did not stop there. Replying to the PA president’s vulgar remark, the US envoy suggested that the insult could be seen as anti-Semitic.
“Three young Israelis were murdered over the weekend… in cold blood by Palestinian terrorist and a reaction from the Palestinian Authority was deafening. No condemnation,” Friedman said later on Monday, speaking at the Global Forum for Combating Antisemitism in Jerusalem, according to Haaretz. “I saw his response on my iPhone. His response was to refer to me as son of a dog. Is that anti-Semitism or political discourse? I leave that up to you.”
Officials in Washington and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rushed to defend Friedman’s stance, amid unprecedented regional tensions sparked by Trump’s December 6 recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital. While Israel welcomed the move, the PA believes the recognition shatters any Palestinian aspirations for independence and statehood.
“Abu Mazen’s assault on the US ambassador, David Friedman, says everything,” Netanyahu said on Twitter using Abbas’ nickname. “For the first time in dozens of years the American administration has stopped pampering the Palestinian leaders. Apparently the shock from the truth made them lose their heads.”
Abu Mazen’s verbal attack on U.S. Ambassador David Friedman says it all. For the first time in decades, the U.S. administration has stopped spoiling the Palestinian leaders and tells them: enough is enough. Apparently the shock of the truth has caused them to lose it.

Calling Abbas’ comments “outrageous and unhelpful,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert urged the Palestinian Authority to focus its efforts on “improving the lives of the Palestinian people and advancing the cause of peace.”

Trump’s advisor on Israel, Jason Greenblatt, called on Abbas “to choose between hateful rhetoric and concrete and practical efforts to improve the quality of life of his people and lead them to peace and prosperity.” Greenblatt, who is also an Orthodox Jew, further noted that Washington is “finalizing” its “plan for peace” aimed at reconciling the Israelis and the Palestinians.

A Lockheed Martin executive hinted at a recent aerospace conference that the SR-72, the hypersonic successor to the SR-71 Blackbird, may already exist, according to Bloomberg.
Jack O’Banion, a vice president at Lockheed’s Skunk Works, made mysterious comments about the ultra-secret project at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ annual SciTech Forum.
O’Banion said that new design tools and more powerful computers brought about a “digital transformation” and “without [that] digital transformation, the aircraft you see there could not have been made,” Bloomberg’s Justin Bachman reported, adding that O’Banion then showed a slide of the SR-72.
This digital transformation reportedly gave Lockheed the ability to design a three-dimensional scramjet engine. Scramjet is a kind of ramjet air-breathing jet engine where combustion happens at supersonic speeds.
O’Banion said that five years ago Lockheed “couldn’t have made the engine itself — it would have melted down into slag,” according to Bloomberg.
“But now we can digitally print that engine with an incredibly sophisticated cooling system integral into the material of the engine itself and have that engine survive for multiple firings for routine operation,” O’Banion said.

Lockheed Martin did not respond to any Business Insider’s request for comment, and declined to answer any further questions from Bloomberg. The US Air Force also declined to answer any questions from Business Insider.
Lockheed announced it was developing the SR-72 in 2013, and that the “Son of Blackbird” would hit Mach 6 — over 4,500 mph — and possibly be operational by 2030.
Last year, reports emerged that Lockheed might test an “optionally piloted” flight research vehicle in 2018, and an actual test flight in 2020.
Reporters at Aviation Week also reportedly caught a glimpse last year of a “demonstrator vehicle” that may have been linked to the SR-72.
And, in perhaps a more far-fetched development, an American man named Tyler Gluckner, who runs a popular YouTube channel about aliens and UFOs called secureteam10, recently posted a video of images from GoogleEarth that he surmised looked like a hypersonic craft, reported by The Sun and Mailonline.

The satellite images were taken outside of a Pratt and Whitney building, which is not part of the Lockheed conglomerate.
Coincidentally or not, Boeing also unveiled a conceptual model for a new hypersonic jet that would hit Mach 5 and fulfill the same missions as the SR-71 at the same aerospace conference O’Banion spoke at.
Lockheed and Boeing are two of the largest defense contractors and political donors in the US.

Andrew Finch, 28, was shot and killed by Wichita police last week. On Tuesday, his mother Lisa wrote a letter to Wichita mayor Jeff Longwell and Police Chief Gordon Ramsay, listing eight questions. Among other things, Finch is asking why authorities have not revealed the identity of the officer who shot and killed her son, why officers handcuffed the family and interrogated them after Finch was shot, and where her son’s body is being kept, according to local outlet WKTR.
She asked why “Wichita City leadership is compounding our grief and sorrow, by keeping my son from us,” according to WKTR.
“Please let me see my son’s lifeless body,” she wrote. “I want to hold him and say goodbye. Please immediately return his body to us.”
Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay said none of the officers at the scene were members of the SWAT team and were not trained to handle hostage situations, according to the Wichita Eagle. The initial 911 call showed up as a local number, he said. “The information I have, it was a spoofed number.”
Police have released portions of video of the incident. “We believe what it shows… His (Finch’s) hands go up and down and around his waistband, and the one arm goes out at about a 45-degree angle,” Ramsay said.
The Wichita incident was the first death due to “swatting” in the US, as far as Ramsay was aware.
“There will be a thorough review of this,” the chief said Tuesday evening. “We want to do everything we can so nothing like this never happens again, ever.”
The police officer who killed Finch has not been identified by name. Officials said he was on paid leave pending an investigation. He is a seven-year veteran of the department. Finch’s family has said through their attorney that they want the officer to be charged.
“Justice for the Finch family constitutes criminal charges against the shooting officer and any other liable officers as well as damages against the city of Wichita for the policies and practices of its Police Department,” the family’s lawyer, Andrew Stroth, told AP.
Barriss waived extradition. He is held in jail without bail and his hearing is over.

Tyler Barriss, 25, was arrested Friday in California in connection with the shooting, after Wichita police issued a fugitive warrant. After a court hearing in Los Angeles Wednesday, Barriss was confined to jail without bond. He is expected to be extradited to Kansas within weeks.
Barriss is alleged to have made the hoax call as a harassment tactic known as “swatting.” He was reportedly feuding with another person over an online video game, and called police to what he believed was his desired victim’s address, telling them there was a suspect who had shot his father and was holding the rest of his family hostage. The responding officers arrived to what was actually Finch’s address and one of them opened fire. Police said Finch had moved his hand toward his waist. He had been unarmed.
This is not Barriss’ first run-in with the law. In 2015, he was sentenced to two years and eight months in jail for making as many as 20 swatting calls and false bomb reports against Los Angeles-area schools and a television station, according to KNBC.
Barriss is charged with making a false alarm, which entails calling emergency services and knowingly providing false information. It is considered a low-level felony in Kansas and carries a maximum of 34 months in prison, though prosecutors could add more charges depending on the results of a police investigation.
He could also be charged with second-degree murder for unintentionally causing a death by reckless actions, Elizabeth Cateforis, a law professor at the University of Kansas, told the Sacramento Bee.

The new Shaft movie won’t be another reboot. In fact, it’s going to be a family affair. The newly titled Son of Shaft has cast Jessie T. Usher in the title role, but he’s not coming alone. He’s going to have a little help from his father. And his great uncle. Because it seems that previous Shaft actors Samuel L. Jackson and Richard Roundtree have also signed on to join director Tim Story‘s action/comedy.
Deadline has the news, reporting that New Line is currently negotiating to bring Jackson and Roundtree back into the fold. This means that Son of Shaft will have a direct connection to the previous film versions of the character, with Usher carrying the legacy of one of cinema’s coolest characters.
Richard Roundtree originated the character of John Shaft on the big screen in Gordon Parks’ 1971 film Shaft. He returned to play the badass private detective in 1972’s Shaft’s Big Score and 1973’s Shaft in Africa. Roundtree even made a cameo appearance in John Singleton’s 2000 reboot-of-sorts, also titled Shaft, which followed Samuel L. Jackson as NYPD detective John Shaft, the nephew of the original John Shaft. Hopefully, Usher’s character will also be named John Shaft, to make this all extra awesome/confusing.
If you haven’t seen Jessie T. Usher before, you probably haven’t watched the Starz series Survivor’s Remorse, which begins its fourth season this month. And like the rest of the world, you probably skipped Independence Day: Resurgence, where he played Dylan Hiller, the son of Will Smith’s character from the original movie.
In Son of Shaft, Usher will play the son of Jackson’s John Shaft (which makes him the grand nephew of Roundtree’s John Shaft) and they will have something of a mismatched buddy cop dynamic in the new movie. Here’s how Deadline describes the movie, which will see the millennial Shaft teaming up with old school daddy Shaft:
He will play the son of the detective, who, after long being estranged from his father, finds himself teamed up with him. The young man is an FBI agent, a cyber expert, and the partnership with dad is an uneasy collision of old school meets new school.
Tim Story, who signed to to direct Son of Shaft back in January (long before we knew any of these story details), recently told us that his movie will be a blend of action and comedy. Heck, he dropped the father/son detail right there on our lap:
My Shaft movie is going to be definitely not straight action. We’re going action-comedy or comedy-action, I’m not exactly sure which one comes first. We’re going to definitely make sure the stakes in the world are real, and then you’ve got these characters who are dealing with kind of a father/son situation, we’re going to see them put a family back together.
John Shaft is one of the main ’70s “blaxploitation” icons for a reason: he was effortlessly cool, the kind of streetwise badass who just oozed charisma…until it was time to kick ass and take names. Then he was all business. The remake is less memorable, but Jackson’s turn as Shaft 2.0 was as entertaining as you’d expect. So the thought of seeing three Shafts on the big screen together is certainly intriguing.
And honestly, that brings me to my one big hang-up here. Tim Story has made laid-back comedies (Babershop) and superhero movies (Fantastic Four and its sequel) and buddy cop action films (Ride Along), but can he make a Shaft movie? While I’m glad New Line has entrusted this character to a black director, John Shaft is too powerful and too important of an icon to be reduced to parody. Hopefully, Story’s promised comedic touches will enhance Shaft’s legacy rather than reduce him to a joke.
Son of Shaft is set to begin filming later this year.

The 31-year-old actor is about to star in The Fate of the Furious as Little Nobody.
In a new interview with Men’s Health, Scott has spoken about working in movies as Clint Eastwood’s son.
He revealed: “I came here to try and do something and nobody took me seriously.
“Everyone brushed me off, like, ‘you’re Clint Eastwood’s son, you’re not a real f**king actor.’”
Scott added: “Some people are still like that. I never thought I would last in this business, but it finally seems to be working out.”
The actor, who is the spitting image of his father in his youth, also spoke out about Clint’s tough love.
He continued: “My dad never gave me a cent. He made me work for everything. Man he was hard on me but it hardened me and gave me drive. My dad is a machine about exercise.
“He showed me how to lift when I was 14 or 15 – he gave me some advice, then left me to do it on my own.”
The 86-year-old Clint’s latest movie was Sully and star Tom Hanks revealed how the director would “treat his actors like horses” and “was intimidating as hell.”
On the Eastwood family code, Scott said: “Yeah, it’s actually a thing. Whatever you’re doing, you try to do your best at it every time.
“Just do it and then move on. You don’t ever backstab people or f**k someone over – you don’t have integrity if you do that.
“You show up on time for stuff. And you don’t bitch and complain about what you’re doing.”
Scott Eastwood’s full interview features in the May 2017 issue of Men’s Health, which is released today.
As he tells Artnet News, Johnson conceived of the project, and then enlisted Parks to write, with Bow and Arrow’s Matthew Perniciaro and Michael Sherman producing. In the announcement on that website, he cites Spike Lee, Jean-Luc Godard, Federico Fellini and Woody Allen as directors that’ve inspired him, and tells the publication of how the he first read the book in his teens, then returned to it in his 30s. “It just stayed on my mind,” he says, “the idea of an incredibly complicated black character and investigating his incredibly difficult… circumstances in a world that was also kind of pitted against him.”
Johnson hails from Chicago (he also first rose to prominence start in that city’s art scene), where Native Son is likewise set. The three-part novel follows 20-year-old Bigger Thomas, a black Chicago resident during the Great Depression. Mired by feelings of social immobility, he engages in crime, before becoming a chauffeur for a white family with real estate monopoly in Chicago’s south side, where they’re earning their immense wealth by exploiting and raising rents on black residents. Racialized tensions percolate until a series of horrific acts of violence are set in motion.
Native Son certainly has a legacy in American canon, and was the first best-selling novel by a black author in America. It was widely read enough that James Baldwin’s first nonfiction book was titled Notes on a Native Son — in which the author, in the essay “Everybody’s Protest Novel,” vehemently critiqued Wright’s book for what he saw as stereotypical and harmful characterization. In a piece about Baldwin’s objections to the novel, Ayana Mathis wrote in the New York Times, “[Wright’s] characters were purposely exaggerated, in part to elicit a white audience’s sympathy and to shock it into racial awareness and political action.” She wondered, though, “where does that leave his black subjects?” Baldwin also happens to have been Suzan-Lori Parks’ mentor — and she credits him for having led to her playwriting career.
The compelling idea of a collaborative vision of this controversial novel — with the prospect of Parks’ viscously exquisite writing (and her relationship likely both to Native Son and Notes on a Native Son) and Johnson’s direction — should put this project on everyone’s radar.
