Dack Peeples just wants to get through orientation and deal with his mounting homesickness, but these are just the beginnings of problems that will come up in adventure game Life in the Dorms. Although, honestly, doing emergency surgery on your friend’s mom or dealing with serial killers roommates aren’t exactly the usual kinds of problems you come across in university.
Life in the Dorms will have you dealing with day-to-day college life with murderous buddies, distant pals, wild animal fights, and amorous attention, all while dealing with classes, loneliness, and just figuring out what life is like on your own. It’s a lot to keep track of, but the mayhem honestly keeps the mind busy from the more emotional problems, doesn’t it? When you need to find the right items to solve puzzles involving wild animals and killer roommates, you kind of forget about how you miss the folks back home.
Full of ridiculous humor, Life in the Dorms offers some silly point-and-clicking that may take you back to the dorm days you’re honestly still content you forgot about.
Life in the Dorms is available for free on Itch.io and Steam. For more information on the game and Oh, a Rock! Studios, you can follow them on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.
]]>Sunday’s Madam Secretary ended on an upnote of sorts: A group of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people was able to slip away from the government persecuting it and take refuge in another nation. But the underground, foreign-policy maneuvering Kat and Jay had to pull to make the rescue happen could have negative ramifications in the long-term.
Long story short: The State Department, working via a non-governmental organization, engaged Kurdish smugglers to get the LGBTQ victims from their home territory of Abkhazia to Bulgaria, which promised refuge. But the Kurds and the Turks are archenemies… which is why Elizabeth is wildly unhappy with both her policy advisor and her chief of staff by the end of the hour.

No matter what Matt Damon does in the movies, you can’t actually shrink yourself down to 5 inches.
The producers of the new film “Downsizing” admit they had to ignore a lot of science to tell the story of a future where people elect to get much smaller in order to live large. The movement starts when a Norwegian scientist discovers a novel way to miniaturize people, in a move he hopes will save humanity by reducing the amount of waste and pollution humans produce. And the little life is cheaper, too.
In the film’s downsized world, a “conflict free” diamond ring and necklace set costs just $ 83, which is about twice the amount a “small” family spends on groceries each month. And the steakhouse chain Tony Roma’s has also been shrunk and imported to the land of the small.
Screenwriter Jim Taylor bluntly put the kibosh on anyone’s dreams of living in a cheap, small world like this after a screening of his movie at the Museum of the Moving Image.
“It’s never going to happen,” Taylor said.
In the movie, Matt Damon’s character works at a call center, but in reality his tiny voice would be way too high-pitched to answer calls from the world of normal-sized folks. Plus, at roughly the height of an iPhone 6, he’d likely be small enough to get swept away by a strong gust of wind. And the mini humans in the movie mostly ignore the huge risk that the protective net around their colony could rupture, allowing a runaway cat or a street rat to gobble them up.
But NYU bioethicist S Matthew Liao, who joined Taylor for the post-screening discussion, has highlighted some very real ways that shrinking people down — though to levels much less drastic than in the film — could help mitigate the effects of climate change.
In a 2012 paper in the journal Ethics, Policy & Environment, Liao spelled out a few of his ideas, which he said could be less risky than other last-resort options like geoengineering.
One idea Liao pushed for is to shrink people back down to the 15-centimeter-shorter heights of humans like Albert Einstein who lived 100 years ago.
“It turns out that 15 centimeters of reduction in height translates to around 23% mass reduction for men and 25% mass reduction for women,” Liao said during the talk. He believes that’s “enough to offset the effects of climate change.”
Technology that could hypothetically make this shrinking process possible is already in use in fertility clinics. It’s called “preimplantation genetic diagnosis” and it allows future parents to screen out embryos that have genetic diseases. With around 500 genes coding for height, Liao says, “that’s a way you can actually select embryos for size.”
Of course, it doesn’t take much mental leap to realize some of the ethical problems that selecting embryos for size, among other traits, would quickly create.
Another possible way to shrink people would be to give them extra estrogen. This technique has been used in kids with profound developmental disabilities to keep them small enough for their parents to continue taking care of them as they grow up.
While such ideas might seem draconian, Liao said there’s no denying the effects that taller people have on the planet.
“It takes more energy to transport a larger person than a smaller person,” he said, adding that making humans smaller could also come in pretty handy if we decide to colonize Mars.
“To get off the planet, size is going to matter a huge deal,” Liao said. “Just think, per person, how much resources you need to sustain people in space.”
Many of us would probably never opt to give up our 21st-century height boost, no matter how warm the planet gets. But it does seem like the change could offer more benefits than we realize.

In a new poll, registered voters of color in Virginia say removing Confederate statues and memorials from public spaces is only “somewhat important” compared to other issues.
Conversely, those voters ranked access to quality education, safety for people of color, and standing against the rise of white nationalism as matters of “extreme importance.”
The poll, conducted by two Democratic-leaning groups, BlackPAC and brilliant corners strategies, comes amid a broad and fraught debate about how to handle and when to remove Confederate memorials — especially in Virginia, where a man who attended a white supremacist rally rammed a car into a crowd of counterprotesters, ultimately killing a woman. The debate has also entered into the state’s upcoming governor’s race.
The groups surveyed about 1,000 voters of color registered in Virginia, including 600 black voters, and 200 Latino voters, and 200 Asian American-Pacific Islander voters, respectively. Voters were asked to rate a set of issues based on race and identity — with 10 being “extremely important,” 5 being “somewhat important” and a 0 being “not important at all.”
Forty-three percent of black voters (the highest percentage) put the removal of Confederate monument at or near the top of their personal priorities; 31% of Hispanic and 35% Asian-American Pacific Islander voters ranked removing Confederate monuments that high. All told, the removal of Confederate statues and monuments had an average score of 5.8-level importance among groups participating in the survey.
Confederate symbols have become a flashpoint in national politics: On the left, symbols like the Confederate flag are held up as relics of white supremacy that represent a legacy of violence against black people over whose freedom the Civil War was fought. Their supporters, meanwhile, largely describe the symbols as an ode to heritage. That debate has been shadowed by violence: both in Charlottesville and in places like Charleston, South Carolina, Dylan Roof killed several members of a black church. He had been photographed with the Confederate flag, which the state subsequently removed from the statehouse grounds after the shooting.
Trump’s response to the Charlottesville violence, in which he described “very fine” people among white supremacists who had rallied around a statue of Robert E. Lee, was widely criticized, especially by black Americans.
But according to the poll, voters of color say they are less likely to respond to specifically anti-Trump messages, and far more likely to be motivated to cast a vote that sends a strong message about their feelings on racism. People who say they are concerned about the protection of voting rights are most likely to vote, according to the poll.
Cornell Belcher, the Democratic pollster who conducted the poll, told BuzzFeed News he wasn’t surprised that the issue of the Confederate monuments was such a low priority.
“When you think about communities of color feeling literally threatened and unsafe in this current environment, issues like the statues are important, but clearly they’re not going to rise to the issue of some of the other issues around racial profiling and community safety where it is a life and death situation in these communities,” he said.
Adrianne Shropshire, BlackPAC’s executive director, said she found the response to the issue of the removal of Confederate monuments and statues “a little bit surprising” but that it was important to look at voter attitudes through the lens of responses to questions about ending white supremacy and fight racism and discrimination. “Ultimately, the visuals of Nazis marching in the street in Charlottesville took precedence over the monument issue. [The responses] didn’t center necessarily on the monuments but instead on the potential for racialized violence,” said Shropshire.
Belcher said that Latino voters in particular are “much more interested” in elections than in years past, but that you “don’t see the same some voter intensity” with black Americans, particularly younger voters. Belcher said that the way to engage is to hammer a compelling message on fighting against discrimination, alluding tangentially to a fear that black voter turnout — black women, for instance, trail both Latino and AAPI women in vote likelihood, according to the survey — could be returning to pre-Obama era levels.
“That’s really problematic for Democrats and progressives if there’s a pre-Obama reversion,” he said.
Virginia’s elections take place Nov. 7. Ralph Northam, the Democratic candidate for governor, is trailing Terry McAuliffe’s 2013 performance with voters of color. Justin Fairfax, the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor who is black, leads in popularity over Republican Jill Vogel with voters of color. A July Virginia Commonwealth University poll had Fairfax with a six point lead over Vogel, but the pollsters recommended Fairfax and Democrats take action increase his name ID.

Horse Racing: Kerrin McEvoy has continued his remarkable form piloting Egg Tart to a superb victory in the South Australian Oaks for Sydney trainer Chris Waller.

DARREN Beadman won Melbourne Cups, Golden Slippers and just about every race in between, but it’s difficult to remember him more emotional than he was in the wake of It’s Somewhat’s Hollindale Stakes success on the Gold Coast on Saturday.
Beadman has been assistant trainer to John O’Shea for the past three years and It’s Somewhat became O’Shea’s final Group winner for the globally powerful Godolphin operation after it was announced they would go their separate ways.
SNOWDENS TAKE AIM AT EARLY WINTER RICHES
Beadman was granted his trainer’s licence on Friday and on Sunday he will have the first runners in his name as he takes the Godolphin reins on an interim basis.
Speculation continues as to who will be offered the fulltime gig in Australia.

Beadman has stood firmly behind O’Shea since news broke last week of his departure and in an interview with SKY Racing last week, he said: “I wouldn’t say it’s a fair achievement, I’d say it was an outstanding achievement” in relation to O’Shea’s time with Godolphin.
On Saturday, he was full of praise for O’Shea again.
“To have John win in his name, he has taught me an unbelievable amount over the past three years. He is a close friend,” Beadman said. “I’m just a tad happy. I haven’t really had time to think of what’s happened in the past week or so. It’s great for the team and the boys.”
It’s Somewhat brought outstanding credentials to the Hollindale, having been a last-start Doncaster Mile winner, but he had to dig deep after being challenged by Single Gaze and Maurus.

“When we brought him up he was like a caged lion,” Beadman said. “It was a fabulous win. They really served it up to him. He showed a lot of courage and a lot of determination.”
Godolphin’s Australian manager Henry Plumptre praised the training effort of O’Shea in having It’s Somewhat still firing at the highest level after winning the big race in Sydney last month.
“Change is always tough, but the system is what makes us successful. John would acknowledge that, Plumptre said. “John has got a good fitness base into this horse and it’s an outstanding training performance to have him go from the Doncaster Mile to this race and still have him winning. On that, he has to be the one to beat in the Doomben Cup.”
Nick Olive rated Single Gaze’s second placing as “a career best”. “It didn’t suit taking off so early and we will go to the Doomben Cup with a lot of confidence,” Olive said.

WITH stablemate Hauraki cooling his heels in the paddock, It’s Somewhat is poised to exact revenge in the feature weight-for-age races for Godolphin this carnival, starting with Saturday’s Group 2 Hollindale Stakes on the Gold Coast.
Hauraki was runner-up in both the Hollindale and Doomben Cup last year and was being set for the Queensland carnival again, but the stable opted to spell him due to “a few niggling issues”.
TOP TIPS: WEEKEND BEST BETS
It’s Somewhat was just behind Hauraki last year, but brings more imposing credentials 12 months on, being a last-start winner of the $ 3 million Doncaster Mile.
With speculation still hovering over the future of who will head Godolphin’s training regime in the absence of John O’Shea, assistant trainer Darren Beadman has stepped into the spokesman role this week.

“John was able to put him into the Doncaster with only one run under his belt, gave him a light preparation and it paid dividends,” Beadman said. “A few things John did differently with him this time took him to another level.
“It’s been good having that little time off where he’s been able to freshen up and go again. He’s done super since the Doncaster.”
It’s Somewhat is a warm favourite for the Hollindale and Godolphin have several leading hopes at the Coast including Regent (Ken Russell), Federal (PM’s Cup) and Tessera (Guineas).
“Tessera was in our top few two-year-olds,” Beadman said. “He had a few little setbacks and never got into any rhythm, but his first-up run was a beauty after a good lay-off.
“He was probably on the wrong part of the track and he got left in front a bit too far from home and to his credit he kicked back and only went down by a small margin. The form out of Regent’s debut win is pretty good. I think it might turn out to be a hot little race.

“He has always galloped well on the track of a morning. He blew the start at his debut, which was probably a blessing in disguise, and he was given a lovely ride by Tye (Angland) after that.”
Godolphin filly Raiment was an early Stradbroke favourite in some markets, but was not among nominations on Wednesday. Instead, she will stick to a fillies and mares path, just as Godolphin did with Ghisoni last year.
“We’ve got other horses for the Straddy, including Impending, Old North and Morton’s Fork, so we thought it would be good to keep her to her own sex,” Beadman said.

]]>An infamous hacker group known as the Shadow Brokers has just released a bunch of tools that that makes it easier for hackers to break into all kinds of Microsoft Windows computers and other Microsoft software, security researchers are warning.
The hacking tools are allegedly part of the arsenal that was said to be stolen from the NSA last summer. That arsenal was reportedly part of what NSA analysts use to break into computers, networks and other systems to do their spy work.
Back in August the group released a bunch of hacking tools and on Friday it released another bunch of “really amazing stuff” according to Nicholas Weaver, a computer security researcher at the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley on the blog Lawfair.
“This may well be the most damaging dump against the NSA to date, and it is without question the most damaging post-Snowden release,” Weaver wrote.

This is not a drill: #NSA exploits affecting many fully-patched Windows systems have been released to the wild. NSA did not warn Microsoft. https://t.co/2H8F7vH7fW
He also noted that timing of the dump is particularly harsh, right at the start of the Easter holiday weekend when many IT pros will busy with their families, and inexperienced hackers (like teenagers) have extra time on their hands. Those inexperienced hackers are known as “script kiddies.”
“Friday is the perfect day to dump tools if your goal is to cause maximum chaos; all the script kiddies are active over the weekend, while far too many defenders are offline and enjoying the Easter holiday. I’m only being somewhat glib in suggesting that the best security measure for a Windows computer might be to just turn it off for a few days,” Weaver says.
Other researchers, pouring through the dump, say they are finding some hacking tools that are really dangerous and could impact most versions of Windows, including the type that runs on computer servers.
“This is really bad, in about an hour or so any attacker can download simple toolkit to hack into Microsoft based computers around the globe,” tweeted one such researcher, Hacker Fantastic, who’s been pouring through the materials.

This isn’t a data dump, this is a damn Microsoft apocalypse. #0day #shadowbrokers
The Shadow Brokers are is widely believed to be Russian, and possibly tied to the Russian government.
Microsoft could not be reached for comment by Business Insider but a spokesperson told ZDNet’s Zack Whittaker. “We are reviewing the report and will take the necessary actions to protect our customers.”
