On Friday, members of Identity Evropa took credit for placing 12 candles, several roses, and a sign that read “United We Stand” outside the Minneapolis Police Department’s 5th Fifth Precinct to honor Damond.

The group said they erected the shrine at the precinct because it was where Minneapolis Police Officer Mohamed Noor, who allegedly shot Damond, was assigned.

“One family will be having an incomplete Christmas this year,” the group posted on Twitter.

Identity Evropa, which promotes “European identity among people of European heritage,” is listed as a white nationalist group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and is labeled as a white supremacist group by the Anti-Defamation League.

By Saturday, the memorial was reportedly vandalised, with the roses and signs missing.

Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder said that an officer later removed what was left of the memorial, but said it was “absolutely not” taken down because of of its connection to Identity Evropa.

“Nothing should be on the property. If it blows on the road of travel, at that point, it’s basically litter. At that point, it was just stuff that was blowing around,” Elder said, according to the Washington Post.

On Sunday, Minneapolis Mayor-elect Jacob Frey released a statement, condemning the group “in the strongest possible terms.”

“The action taken this weekend outside the 5th Precinct was cowardly and disgusting,” Frey said, according to KSTP. “Identity Evropa and those who share their values have no place in our city. Hate has no place in Minneapolis. Period.”

Justine Damond was a 40-year-old yoga instructor and life coach from Sydney’s Northern Beaches. She was shot and killed behind her Minneapolis home on the night of July 15.

Noor and his partner, Matthew Harrity, responded to her emergency call about a possible sexual assault in a back alley. Her death sparked international outrage, and led to the resignation of Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau.

Damond was standing outside the squad car next to Harrity, who was in the driver’s seat, when Noor fired his weapon from the passenger side of the vehicle. There have been conflicting reports on how many times Damond was shot. The officers attempted CPR, but Damond died 20 minutes later. Both officers had their body cameras switched off.

The California-based group said that said they set up the shrine after “a judge recently decided not to charge” Noor, who they labeled as a “Somali-born killer.”

Earlier this month, members of the advocacy group “Justice 4 Jamar,” secretly recorded Hennepin County attorney Mike Freeman telling them that that he did not have enough evidence to file charges against Noor five months after the shooting.

“I got to have the evidence and I don’t have it yet,” Freeman said in the video. “Let me just say it’s not my fault. So, if it isn’t my fault, who didn’t do their job? It’s called investigators. They don’t work for me.”

Freeman, who has not decided whether to file criminal charges against Noor, apologized for his remarks on Monday, saying that investigators have been working to gather evidence, but the case required more investigation.

“While some clamor for swift justice, only careful, detailed work and careful analysis brings us real justice,” Freeman said, according to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press. “That is what this case deserves and that is what it will get.”

At least 13 people have been killed and 16 injured in a suicide car bomb attack on a hotel in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu. The attack was followed by gunfire, with a second blast reportedly being heard in the area minutes later.

The assailants targeted the popular Nasa-Hablod hotel located near the presidential palace and frequented by Somalia’s politicians and local elites. Al-Shabab extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack, adding that its fighters are still inside the hotel.

A local police officer told Reuters that fighting is underway in the building. Local police has also confirmed the deaths of seven people so far, including both civilians and military personnel.

The death toll from two car bomb explosions in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu has risen to 85, police say. The Saturday’s attack has become one of the deadliest in the recent history of the country beset by an Islamist insurgency.

The first blast happened near the Safari Hotel, close to Somalia’s Foreign Ministry. The blast area lies in the center of the city where government offices, hotels, restaurants, and shops are located, police said.

The second explosion took place in the city’s Madina district hours later, according to police.

“The number of dead has risen to 85. We know some 100 who were injured,” Mohamed Hussein, a police official, told Reuters on Sunday.

The attacks happened just two days after the head of US Africa Command was in Mogadishu to meet with Somalia’s president, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. However, similar assaults in the country have been blamed on fighters from Islamic extremist rebel group Al-Shabaab. 

The group controlled Mogadishu from 2006 until August 2011, when African Union (AU) and Somali forces pushed them out of the capital. The extremists have launched regular attacks on the city since 2011.

Al-Shabaab has repeatedly targeted army bases and communities across the southern and central parts of the country.

The deadliest incident over the past decade was an attack on the Transitional Federal Government’s ministerial complex in Mogadishu in 2011, when a suicide bomber drove a truck loaded with explosives into the building, killing at least 100 people. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack.

Minbar, an international entrepreneurship organization, will host its first startup competition in Minneapolis this month highlighting businesses created by Somali entrepreneurs across the globe.

To be considered for the competition, startups must offer a product or service that promotes job opportunities and quality of life in Somalia. The company itself does not have to be located in Eastern Africa. Affinis Labs, the East Coast-based social innovation firm behind Minbar, said it will look favorably on groups with youth and women.

Five startups will be selected to pitch at a “Shark Tank” style event in Minneapolis on September 21. Each group will have five minutes to pitch their business in front of a live audience and a panel of four judges.

Just like the show, the judges, often called sharks, will be free to commit as much or as little to the startups as they wish. Minbar plans to commit a minimum of $ 25,000, which will be split amongst the finalists.

“In many places entrepreneurship tends to be an elite sport,” said Quintan Wiktorowicz, Affinis Labs co-founder and managing partner. “If you want to succeed, you need to be interconnected and networked into the community.”

Before founding Affinis, Wiktorowicz served as the senior director for global engagement and community partnerships under the Obama administration. In this role, Wictorowicz worked with refugee communities across the country and around the world to determine how the government could best assist them.

“Now, we’re trying to flip that,” he said. “We found that communities better understand their own circumstances, so our role as an entity should be to empower them.”

Wiktorowicz explained that at that time, the government had largely engaged with the Somali population on two topics: civil rights and counterterrorism. One of the best ways to promote community-driven problem solving, he found, was through entrepreneurship.

Many community members are interested in starting their own business, but lack the resources to do so. Eventually, this idea led to the creation of Minbar, which connects hopeful entrepreneurs with the people and resources they need to grow a business.

But why is an international, shark-tank style Somali pitch competition coming to Minneapolis? To Wiktorowicz, the answer is obvious.

The Twin Cities is home to the greatest concentration of Somalis in the nation. One of the largest diasporas is located in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis, which is occasionally referred to as “Little Mogadishu.” Somali entrepreneurs have made their mark on the area by opening barber shops, clothing stores and other businesses.

Last year, local entrepreneur Fatimah Hussein won the impact ventures division of the Minnesota Cup with Asiya Sport, a company that makes sweat-wicking athletic hijabs. And there are countless other examples of the Minnesota Somali community contributing to local government and business communities.

Affinis Labs ran a Minbar pilot program in Tunisia last year. As part of the program, Minbar sponsored an entrepreneurship bootcamp and pitch competition involving hundreds of participants. At the end of the program, Minbar gave seed funding to four Tunisian startups, half of which generated revenue not long after leaving its bootcamp, according to the organization.

“We were able to demonstrate that if you put something out there like that there’s a strong hunger of these types of opportunities,” Wiktorowicz said.

He added that Minbar aims to highlight the untapped talent, passion and potential of Somali entrepreneurs across the globe. Wiktorowicz hopes to continue expanding Minbar’s reach into other countries and cities across the globe.

“It’s amazing to realize how far very little investment can take you,” he said. “There’s a lot of need and a lot of opportunity which can be channeled by building an ecosystem and pipeline of support for entrepreneurs in places like Somalia.”

The chair of the Somali Conservatives says he has complained to the police after he was accused by Labour supporters online of being paid to campaign for the Tories.

Mohamed Ali told BuzzFeed News that while he and other Somalis were campaigning for the Conservative candidate in Ealing Central and Acton, Labour supporters photographed them and claimed online that they were being paid to campaign.

Ali said that the above photo was taken last Saturday, when they were in Acton to post campaign materials on behalf of the Tory candidate Joy Morrissey.

“The purpose of our visit was to post campaign materials for our candidate in the shop windows of the Somali businesses who offered us the space,” he said.

Ali said that they ran into a group of people campaigning for the Labour party candidate seeking re-election, Rupa Huq, who asked if they could take a picture of them.

“I asked what for and before I got a response another activist took a picture and they then walked away,” said Ali.

Ali said that no words were exchanged at any point.

However, the Labour activist who took the photo, Patrick Mackervaie, claimed on Facebook that a conversation did take place, and that Ali and the other activists claimed they were being paid.

He said that he saw them while canvassing and that the individual holding the poster was shouting at him from the other side of the street.

Mackervaie told BuzzFeed News he spoke about how much they were earning a day: “I laughed myself silly when he said £6.50 a day.

“I just think they were on a wind up when they saw several of us from Labour canvassing the same street.”

However, the man holding the poster, Abdirachid Fidow, denied to BuzzFeed News that any such claim had been made.

He said: “Labour is so bad and they are losing their core traditional supporters because some members of Labour party office in Acton think they have [a] monopoly over [minorities].”

Fidow said that the claims were offensive and racist. He added. “He is saying that Somalis get involved in politics to get paid.”

Since the photo was taken, Ali said that they had received online abuse from Labour supporters.

Ali called the accusations “deeply offensive and racist” and said he has reported them to the police as a hate crime.

He said: “For a party that purports to be anti-racist it is racist in the extreme to suggest anyone of colour could not voluntarily support a Conservative candidate. Exactly how does an anonymous slur on an ethnic community fit in to Labour’s anti-racist agenda?”

Said Hassan, 27, a lecturer from Kingsbury who was also leafleting for Morrissey, said they had been subjected to abuse from people online and in person. “The comments made online have been deeply hurtful and cause great offensive to me and my friends. We would expect this type of dirty campaigning from the extreme far right not Labour party members.”

Hanad Darwish, 23, from east London, was also campaigning in Acton. He said: “This incident signifies the complacency on the part of the Labour party towards certain ethnic minority communities as they have always taken their support and votes for granted so the shift in the political tide and for them to witness a rise in young, black and Muslim males joining the Tories is a bit of a shock.”

The claim that the campaigners were being paid to do so led the local Tory candidate to intervene.

Morrissey called the allegations insulting and libellous.

She told BuzzFeed News that she doesn’t normally dignify anonymous slurs from male labour trolls with a response.

But she added: “However, I would direct you to the comments of Mohamed Ali, who wondered where these ethnic insults fit into Labour’s anti-racist agenda – and that the reason he and his friends support me is because no Ealing councillor has put more time and effort into helping all our communities – unlike my Labour colleagues. “
