Patients, home care providers and medical experts who spoke with White Coat, Black Art all agree that a rethink to home care is needed in Canada. Denmark and The Netherlands could provide a possible model for care at home with more help and less red tape, experts say.

Combat marginalization or expel troublemakers? MEPs offer solutions in wake of Strasbourg attack https://briefnews.eu/combat-marginalization-or-expel-troublemakers-meps-offer-solutions-in-wake-of-strasbourg-attack/ https://briefnews.eu/combat-marginalization-or-expel-troublemakers-meps-offer-solutions-in-wake-of-strasbourg-attack/#respond Thu, 13 Dec 2018 14:04:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/combat-marginalization-or-expel-troublemakers-meps-offer-solutions-in-wake-of-strasbourg-attack/

The Strasbourg Christmas market shooting has fanned the flames of a debate about how to keep Europe safe, with MEPs from opposite sides of the aisle providing RT with radically different views about what must be done.

The deadly attack in the northeast French city, which killed two people and left more than a dozen wounded, seems to have had a profound effect on EU parliamentarians – many of whom were present when their Strasbourg-based headquarters was put on lockdown following the shooting.

However, serious disagreement remains over how to move forward, with conflicting views on immigration, terrorism, and borders dominating the security debate.

Strasbourg shooting: Latest on Christmas market attack

Worried and angry

Greek MEP Stelios Kouloglou, a member of the European United Left-Nordic Green Left, said that his deep concern for those stuck on the streets of Strasbourg during the attack quickly turned into anger.

“We were worried about our colleagues who were outside already. But there was also anger. Anger against those cowardly people killing innocent people passing by … Killing kids, tourists, what is this? It looks like they don’t have any kind of heart or soul,” he told RT.

The left-leaning MEP said that the parliament held a minute of silence for the victims of the attack – a practice that, according to him, was becoming far too frequent due to the regularity of similar attacks across Europe.

He thinks what needs to be done is “changing policies to find the sources of terrorism and to attack the resources of terrorism.”

Hailing from the opposite end of the political spectrum, Christine Arnautu – a French MEP for right-wing National Rally, and the party’s vice president for social affairs – also noted the solidarity displayed by parliamentarians following the attack. She warned, however, that candlelight vigils won’t keep France safe.

“Everyone has showed compassion, all the deputies, because these incidents are very traumatizing. But when it comes to real solutions … it is not enough to light up candles, to cry, to say, like they do all the time, ‘je suis Charlie’, ‘je suis Strasbourg’, ‘je suis Bataclan.’ No, we are France and we want France to live in peace.”

Integration or deportation?

The suspected gunman in the attack – 29-year-old Cherif Chekatt, who was born in Strasbourg but whose family roots trace back to Morocco – has rekindled a longstanding debate in Europe over immigration and integration.

“We have to reintegrate the marginalized youth in the suburbs of Paris and Brussels and Strasbourg,” Kouloglou said. “Give them jobs. Give them hope for life. Because those are miserable, desperate people. And they end up doing such cowardly things.”

In order to create lasting security in Europe, the wars in the Middle East must be brought to an end, Kouloglou said. The Greek MEP also encouraged Europe to engage with “moderate Islam” and a stressed that stereotyping Muslims would only lead to more hate and violence.

His French colleague took a different approach, arguing that the act of “Islamic terrorism” shows that there are some who are incompatible with French values.

Arnautu urged France to expel all people currently on the country’s terror watch list, noting that Chekatt had been flagged but was still not stopped from carrying out an attack. She also accused immigrants of not being sufficiently loyal to the French state.

Having a nationality should mean something. And those people, hate France, hate our country, hate our culture, because of this there was no coincidence in the fact that it happened on a Christmas market

Ultimately, according to Arnautu, the Strasbourg attack should compel France to rethink its open borders with the rest of Europe, which has allowed for a “free circulation of people” resulting in “criminals” entering the country.

“It was said that this attacker has previously been in Germany or elsewhere. He might be crossing borders now. Every time we have such a tragedy, we get back to the topic of border control. For example tonight I believe the Franco-German border is controlled, but it’s too late.”

Clash of ideologies

Both parliamentarians believe something must be done to prevent further attacks on European soil – but a clash of ideologies may serve as a serious hurdle to comprehensive action that can be agreed upon.

“The right and the extreme right are trying to blame the refugees for the terrorist attacks,” Kouloglou said, adding that in reality, “almost all” such attacks are carried out by people holding European passports.

Returning to the issue of integration, the Greek MEP noted: “We don’t have to blame refugees or immigrants. We have to blame ourselves.”

He said that painting Islam and refugees with such a wide brush would only lead to more tragedy.

[The right] try to blame Islam as a whole and now refugees and immigrants. This is not solving the problem. You create more enemies, you create enemies among the refugees.

Arnautu, on the other hand, blamed Europe’s left-leaning and liberal parties for the continent’s security problems.

“There are ideologists, who, despite all the tragedy, the deaths we’ve been witnessing for the past six years, keep saying that we should be tolerant, we should live together,” she said.

“No, we don’t want to live together with them. And I think we will see a lot of bad things if we stay in this EU, instead of protecting our sovereignty.”

Can He Crowdfund Solutions for Palestine Where Foreign Aid Has Failed? https://briefnews.eu/can-he-crowdfund-solutions-for-palestine-where-foreign-aid-has-failed/ https://briefnews.eu/can-he-crowdfund-solutions-for-palestine-where-foreign-aid-has-failed/#respond Tue, 17 Jul 2018 11:15:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/can-he-crowdfund-solutions-for-palestine-where-foreign-aid-has-failed/ A program unique in the Arab world to teach schoolchildren about water conservation and environmental stewardship is off the ground. An Olympic hopeful, who taught himself how to sprint on a rundown high school track using YouTube videos, snatched up aid to train ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Games. A teacher at a nonprofit yoga center got the training to develop an extensive Arabic yoga curriculum. The money and the expertise to do it all came from the crowd, via the fast-growing platform of BuildPalestine.

By linking 12 million Palestinians across the West Bank, Gaza and the diaspora, 28-year-old Derrar Ghanem is connecting social entrepreneurs with the tools they need, while shifting perceptions of the Palestinian Territories. But through the haze of ongoing strife, it’s hard for anyone to see beyond what is widely recognized as an Israeli occupation of large parts of the territories.

Born in Athens to a Palestinian father and a Greek-American mother, Ghanem was raised in the city of Jenin in the West Bank. His father, a farmer, struggled to secure a loan to buy equipment. It’s why two years ago he was struck by Besan Abu-Joudeh’s idea to start a crowdfunding platform. At the time Ghanem, a political science and philosophy major at Birzeit University, was managing a co-working space called Work Factory in Ramallah.

We look for social entrepreneurs who have their skin in the game and can show it.

Derrar Ghanem

“I thought ’There’s another great idea by an entrepreneur that’ll probably just fizzle out.’ Whatever. I let it go,” Ghanem says. But the next day, Abu-Joudeh called to set up a meeting, winning Ghanem over with her seriousness and passion. Ghanem was attuned to the challenge of securing capital, whether from a bank or the government. “That was the push and motivation,” he says. “We need an alternative means of raising funds. And imagine how many people we can help.”

Together with Abu-Joudeh, Mahran Isamail and three others who have since bowed out, the team established BuildPalestine in October 2016. It’s more than just another Kickstarter. The platform includes “crowdsolving” — applying the wisdom of people across the globe to nettlesome problems. In the background, BuildPalestine’s campaigns are carefully curated, and entrepreneurs are trained in social entrepreneurship and innovation, whether they’re new to the scene or representing established organizations. BuildPalestine also invites experts, local governments and community members to collaborate on solving local problems.

Derar

BuildPalestine’s board members — spread across oceans and in fields from film to business to human rights — emphasize transparency and impact for their global donors. Board chair Sara Husseini describes Ghanem as “passionate, creative and energetic — someone who believes that anything can be achieved if you set your mind to it.” As chief outreach officer, he is tasked with overseeing day-to-day activities, from seeking out partnerships to leading trainings, workshops and events. “We look for social entrepreneurs who have their skin in the game and can show it,” he says.

It’s a far different model for building up the territories than international aid, which BuildPalestine’s leaders criticize. “Palestine’s issue is the occupation. Everything else is simply a Band-Aid,” says Abu-Joudeh, who is now based in Washington, D.C., and serves as chief engagement officer. Husseini, a former communications adviser to the Palestinian government, says foreign donations lead to “a perverse situation where aid contributes indirectly toward propping up the occupation, by allowing the Israeli government to maintain control over Palestinian land without having to bear the cost.”

But can small donations from ordinary folks pooled over the internet really match the deep pockets of global governments? “Crowdfunding can’t be the only solution,” says Vanessa Zuabi, founder of JSR Consulting, which aims to bridge business with social impact. “Long-term sustainable sources of funding are critical. This is where the private sector, as well as efforts in venture philanthropy and impact investing, can play a really important role in Palestine and the Middle East more broadly.” At the same time, Zuabi holds that efforts like BuildPalestine can “shift away from the dependency on government aid funding, democratizing how capital is allocated” and helping to address the “real needs of the communities they are trying to serve.” Ghanem, meanwhile, sees his work as “an alternative” to the big-aid model. “Perhaps it can lead us to something better.”

What sets the BuildPalestine platform apart, its founders say, is its support for people, not ideas. And these local solutions cost as little as $ 5,000. According to World Bank figures, the West Bank and Gaza took in $ 2.4 billion in development assistance and official aid in 2016. So far, BuildPalestine has raised $ 126,000 for 17 projects, aiming to provide a destination for supporters around the world who ask, “How can I help?”

As for Ghanem, who dabbles in deejaying at parties under the name DJ Dar (“house” in Arabic), he dreams of one day organizing an international music festival in the Palestinian Territories. There he could spin records, once again working the crowd.

5 Questions for Derrar Ghanem

  1. What is the last book you read? Ishmael, a novel by Daniel Quinn.
  2. What do you worry about? Worry is a place I run in and out of all the time.
  3. What is the one thing you cannot live without? Music.
  4. Who is your hero? [Palestinian DJ] Sama Abdulhadi.
  5. What is one item on your bucket list? Organizing an international music festival in Palestine.

Clever home storage solutions: adaptable space savers https://briefnews.eu/clever-home-storage-solutions-adaptable-space-savers/ https://briefnews.eu/clever-home-storage-solutions-adaptable-space-savers/#respond Wed, 27 Dec 2017 15:23:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/clever-home-storage-solutions-adaptable-space-savers/

Don’t be tempted to just fill every cupboard in the house and shut the doors.

Although cupboards can look neat, they also make rooms appear smaller than if you use shelves.

You’re also not confined to wall shelves.

Shelving units that double as open-plan room dividers, such as Perch & Parrow’s Webster shelving unit, provide a flexible solution that can be used just about anywhere in the house.

Flexibility is crucial says Mark Baldwin, buying manager for bathrooms at Argos, who suggests a Bamboo Bathroom Storage Caddy for organising toiletries.

“Freestanding bathroom cabinets and shelves offer a cheaper and far more versatile solution to keeping clutter at bay,” he says.

“Instead of allowing you to push old products to the back of the cupboard, these tiered caddies keep your products out in the open – helping you control your collections of lotions and potions.

“It is also more flexible than having fitted cupboards as they can be easily moved around your space to suit you and can even be repurposed as storage units in any other room of the house.”

Similarly, blanket boxes are not just for bedrooms.

Fair trade furniture retailer Myakka has a selection of wooden and upholstered trunks and director George Hopkins says: “They’re a stylish, fuss-free way to house all the home’s paraphernalia.”

Don’t forget somewhere to keep keys, letters and life’s essentials in the hall.

A clutter-free hallway creates a beautiful entrance to your home.

Gaming companies outsmart DDoS attack with new software security solutions https://briefnews.eu/gaming-companies-outsmart-ddos-attack-with-new-software-security-solutions/ https://briefnews.eu/gaming-companies-outsmart-ddos-attack-with-new-software-security-solutions/#respond Sun, 10 Dec 2017 19:58:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gaming-companies-outsmart-ddos-attack-with-new-software-security-solutions/

New releases in the online gaming industry are highly anticipated events. Millions of gamers anxiously waiting to leap onto a shiny new game service is an irresistible target for hackers—with bragging rights being the prize. But for the gaming companies, suffering a DDoS attack is a disaster with immediate loss of revenue, mitigation costs and long-term consequences for their brand. Fortunately, new approaches to security based on multi-dimensional analytics and traffic modeling using big data are changing how this game is played.

The DDoS danger

Global gaming companies build excitement with big, heavily-marketed release dates. This brings millions of players online at the exact same time. During these traffic surges, gaming companies also see a surge of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. Being able to surgically shutting down the attacks without disrupting service is critical.

Successful DDoS attacks can have immediate revenue implications, but more importantly, they hurt their customer base—and even a small number of grumpy gamers can do a lot of damage to the brand online. Growing the player base is essential for having a healthy game launch, especially in the highly competitive gaming industry. So losing customers due to an inaccessible service or bad PR can have serious consequences for any game — just look at Diablo 3, which took years to recover from its self-inflicted “Error 37” fiasco.

Gaming companies generally operate worldwide, serving millions of users. To avoid latency, they distribute their platforms onto multiple region-based servers. DDOS attacks can attack all or some of these servers concurrently, or can focus the attack on different layers of the service to weaken it to the point of being unusable.

A multi-vector attack might, for instance, use hijacked Internet of Things (IoT) devices reprogrammed to participate in the attack as well as hundreds of cloud servers with 10 Gbps uplinks to launch a simultaneous TCP/IP attack, as occurred in last year’s infamous DYN attack.

The outdated defense

Hardware mitigation solutions were not designed for the cloud and IoT era and are, unfortunately, too simplistic to keep up with these types of sophisticated threats.

When gaming companies suffer these DDoS attacks, the current common defense is to backhaul all traffic suspected of being infected to a scrubbing center where racks of purpose-built mitigation machines clean it in a single pass through. Attack detection starts with a baseline measure for what constitutes “normal” and then looks for anomalies, such as sudden large spikes in traffic. The affected traffic is then re-directed and backhauled to the scrubbers.

There is nothing elegant about this approach; it is slow and it suffers from a lot of false positives, meaning the unnecessary backhauling of large amounts of uninfected traffic. The detection hardware lacks the raw compute power required to perform the additional analytics needed to separate out the false positives. And, as the scale of DDoS attacks escalates, these inefficiencies become increasingly costly to gaming companies, since the system has to spend resources fighting phantom attacks, instead of identifying and dealing with other attack vectors.

A more efficient solution

A more elegant and faster approach exists using software-based multi-dimensional analytics, making detection more precise. They combine real-time network telemetry with advanced network analytics and other data such as DNS and BGP (among others) to see down to the source of attack traffic in real time.

Multi-dimensional analytics provide visibility into cloud applications and services and can instantly identify where the traffic is originating, determining whether it is friend or foe. Additionally, big data approaches to traffic modeling can help compare a potential event to past attack profiles and be more precise about what degree of variability from ‘normal’ is OK.

Armed with this kind of analysis, it becomes possible to create simple, effective filters at the peering edge of the network for the zombie PCs, IoT devices and/or cloud servers that are carrying out the attack. The offending traffic doesn’t have to be sent to the scrubbers; it is simply blocked at the edge. And every vector of the attack can be identified, pinpointing the attack endpoints and allowing for surgically precise mitigation. The ability to identify the endpoints of the attack in real-time means that rapidly changing attack vectors can also be identified and counteracted as the attackers attempt to play cat and mouse with network security operations.

This is a high stakes game that is escalating with the spread of inexpensive, insecure cloud services (<10 GB) and IoT devices. DDoS botnets have evolved beyond infecting PCs and now use IoT devices and Linux servers in the cloud. This new arsenal of weapons is giving hackers a completely different level of power than they’ve had before.

Fortunately, software security solutions built around deep network analytics and big data techniques are also game changers. For those gaming companies that have employed them, they can meet the threats with confidence, for now, with the winning approach.
