The Red Devils came from 2-0 down on Tuesday evening to draw with Burnley.

Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood netted for the Clarets before Paul Pogba and Victor Lindelof saved Solskjaer’s blushes.

Pogba, who has been on fire under Solskjaer, fired home from the penalty spot before Lindelof’s 92nd minute equaliser.

And while Solskjaer insisted Manchester United didn’t deserve to lose against Burnley, the Red Devils boss claimed his side were too slow with the ball.

He said: “The comeback was brilliant, the players have been asked about how they would react if they went 1-0 or 2-0 down so I felt the comeback was fantastic.

“We had loads of chances, loads of possession, we didn’t deserve to lose. But we did it to ourselves really.

“We fought, that wasn’t the problem. We were just too slow in possession in the first half.

“For the first goal we played our way into trouble.

“It wasn’t the attitude, the application was too slow and the tempo on the ball wasn’t good enough. But the reaction was good.

“We disappointed ourselves and we disappointed the crowd today, but the ones who stayed had a typical Old Trafford finish to the game so that was a big plus.”

United are now two points behind Arsenal in fifth following their draw with Burnley.

The Gunners edged past Cardiff in a 2-1 win at the Emirates on Tuesday night.

And United star Pogba has urged his team-mates to up their game.

“We have to learn from our mistakes and next time start the game differently,” he said.

“Like the manager said, you have to start strong and be aggressive because that’s what they were in the first half.

“We played like we were winning 1-0 or 2-0, that’s where we went wrong.

“The comeback was positive but the result was disappointing.

“The reaction was good, we didn’t lose, but we dropped two points we could have won.”

United are back in action on Sunday afternoon against Leicester in the Premier League.

Solskjaer guided United to an eighth straight win with a 3-1 victory over Arsenal in the FA Cup last night.

Goals from Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial secured Manchester United’s path into the last-16.

United fans have not been so buoyant in years and a top-four spot to salvage the season is now a real possibility.

And Solskjaer reckons United have finally got their identity back.

“Today we looked more like a proper team. We looked more structured. We’d worked hard at defending and counter-attacking.

“Counter-attacking is classic Manchester United – Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ji Sung-park – we’ve scored so many at Arsenal over the years.

“Today was a big step forward. It was a massive improvement from the Tottenham game.

“It’s easy to get excited and talk about the future but we need to just keep working and think about the next game.

“We had to dig deep. The attitude and work-rate was important. Towards the end it was comfortable but not during the 90 minutes.”

Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku both started for United at the Emirates despite missing out in recent weeks.

Sergio Romero also impressed in goal with Lukaku laying on assists for the opening two goals.

And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has faced major issues when deciding who to pick, but knows it’s not the worst problem to be confronted with.

“It’s fantastic to go through in the cup,” he told BBC Sport.

“It’s one of the hardest games you can get.

“I’ve had a [selection] headache since I came because the squad is full of good players.

“It’s up to us to pick the right tactics and players. We need to rest a few as there’s big games coming up. But we have fresh legs.”

Pundit Ian Wright has praised the United players, who have shone since Jose Mourinho was sacked last month.

He said: “Manchester United look like different players.

“The way they are playing, they couldn’t have been enjoying it under Jose Mourinho at the end.

“We’re seeing tremendous performances. Arsenal were trying to score a perfect goal but they just needed to get the ball into the box more.

“I was thinking at some stage were Arsenal going to drop back a bit but it never happened.

“They did deserve it tonight United, it was a poor performance from Arsenal.”

As for Arsenal, manager Unai Emery admitted his side were outplayed at home.

“They have been clinical over the 90 minutes. We had chances but couldn’t score and thats the difference,” he said.

“I hope they are not two big injuries. Our game plan worked well, we had pressure and chances but in the second half we can take some risk.

“The players worked well to win this match but we lost today. We deserved more.”

That’s the verdict of ESPN FC pundit Craig Burley.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard away at Tottenham on Sunday as the Red Devils secured a precious 1-0 away win at Wembley, with Rashford the goalscorer in the first half.

That extended their winning run under temporary appointment Solskjaer to six straight victories across the Premier League and the FA Cup.

And Rashford, Martial, Lingard and Paul Pogba were all among United’s most impressive performers alongside the excellent David de Gea.

Lukaku was out injured for Solskjaer’s first two games but in the most recent four, only started in a cup clash with Reading in which he scored.

While he has fired further goals against Bournemouth and Newcastle in the league, the 25-year-old has yet to return to the starting line-up with Rashford – who has four goals an assist in five league games under the Norwegian – trusted as No 9 instead.

And Burley fears that Lukaku – despite his tremendous Premier League record with 109 goals in 239 games – will find himself struggling for starts unless Solskjaer’s squad is hit by injury problems.

Burley said: “At times Lingard was through the middle, Martial was on the left, Rashford was on the right and then it was interchangeable. 

“Every time, particularly when they were on top, Pogba was right in behind and he was supporting. 

“Under Mourinho, when they won it back it was a lump up to Lukaku. If he didn’t hold it up, it was coming back. 

“At least now they’re saying, ‘Right we’re going to back our pace up front, whether it be two or three.’ 

“I tell you what, United with Lukaku in the side now? I just don’t see it. What a perfect foil he is to come off the bench. 

“It’s a lot of money to come off the bench. But I wouldn’t even think about putting him in the team because they’re such a fluid team without him in with the front three and their movement. 

“At this moment in time barring injury he’s got no chance of getting in. 

“With the personnel they’ve got in midfield at the moment they can play a more open game because they’ve got pace. 

“They can’t play an open type of game when you’ve got Fellaini and Lukaku in the team because you haven’t got the pace there.

United will hope to extend their improved run of form at home to Brighton on Saturday (3pm) where they will look to equal their longest winning run since another seven-win run across December 2016 and January 2017.

Solskjaer took over as Manchester United manager after Jose Mourinho was sacked before Christmas.

The Norwegian has since own six games on the bounce against Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Reading and Tottenham.

The 1-0 Spurs win on Sunday was United’s toughest test and they came through it – in large part thanks to David De Gea’s impressive 11 saves in the second half.

Plenty of fans and pundits are calling for Solskjaer to get the managerial job full time, with his post currently set to end in the summer.

But Ince is adamant the Norwegian has done nothing extraordinary just yet.

“We can’t get too sucked in with what Ole’s done,” Ince told Paddy Power.

“Let’s be honest, it couldn’t get any worse at before Jose Mourinho left.

“There was a dark cloud over the entire club, the players, the fans and the staff.

“It was impacting performances on the pitch.

“Ole’s come in, a friendly face at the club with a calming influence and it seems as though the players have upped their effort as a result.

“The shackles are off, but that doesn’t mean that Ole is the right man for the job.

“I could have gone in and done the same thing, so could Steve Bruce.

“Anyone could have gone in and done what he has done, it wasn’t a hard thing to do to give those players freedom and improve the mood.”

Ince has not managed a club since 2014, while Bruce is set to join Sheffield Wednesday in February when he comes back from holiday.

As for , he is still under contract at Norwegian side Molde and is expected to return to the club in May when the Premier League season ends.

The 45-year-old is one of a number of candidates United’s board are looking at as a long-term successor to Mourinho, however.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is on that list, while Laurent Blanc and Zinedine Zidane are currently out of work.

Antonio Conte could be another option for United after he was sacked by Chelsea in the summer.

Conte still has six months remaining on his £9m-a-season Chelsea contract, meaning United were unlikely to move for him after sacking Mourinho.

The cost of covering that contract was also what put Real Madrid off, with Santiago Solari currently in charge of the first team.

Manchester United head into the January transfer window with interim manager Solskjaer in charge.

The Red Devils are expected to appoint a new manager in the summer and could withhold transfer funds this month in preparation for an end-of-season splurge.

As for Solskjaer, he is only signed up on an interim basis until the end of the season but may get the post full time if United continue to thrive under his leadership.

Asked if he has spoken to Woodward or the board about his United future, he said: “No, no, no it’s early doors.

“Of course, when I came in they were open and honest about it.

“They’re going to have a process, looking for the next manager but the more you’re here, the more you enjoy it.

“But it’s one game at a time and the day they announce the next manager, if it’s me or someone else, good luck.”

Asked if he could have asked for better after a 100 per cent start to his managerial stint, Solskjaer said: “Not better because you can’t do it better.

“But obviously when you come in to a club like this, you expect to win games.

“And when you win four you expect to win the next one as well.

“I don’t look at these games and think ‘well, we can’t win that’ – I think we can win every single game.”

United play Reading in the FA Cup on Saturday and Solskjaer admitted a few of his players are carrying knocks.

“Rojo and Smalling are out,” he said.

“I’m not sure if Paul [Pogba] is going to be ready, he got a knock against Newcastle.
