NASCAR drivers, pit crew members and others on Monday marched in solidarity with Bubba Wallace, in the wake of a racist incident that targeted the only full-time Black driver in the sport’s elite Cup Series.

The moving moment occurred ahead of the GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, which was broadcast Monday afternoon on Fox Sports. (Watch video down below.)

On Sunday, it was reported that a noose had been found in Wallace’s garage stall, not two weeks after he lobbied for the stock car racing series to ban the Confederate flag from display at its events and facilities. NASCAR proceeded to enact the ban effective June 10.

The garage area where the noose was found is considered secure, accessible only by competitors, officials and track staff.

“We are angry and outraged and cannot state strongly enough how seriously we take this heinous act,” NASCAR said in a statement. “We have launched an immediate investigation and will do everything we can to identify the person(s) responsible and eliminate them from the sport. As we have stated unequivocally, there is no place for racism in NASCAR and this act only strengthens our resolve to make the sport open and welcoming to all.”

Wallace himself said on Twitter that the “the despicable act of racism and hatred leaves me incredibly saddened and serves as a painful reminder of how much further we have to go as a society and ow persistent we must be in the fight against racism.”

During the show of support ahead of Monday’s race, Wallace took a selfie with the crowd of peers, with the simple statement, “Together”:

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Jacinda Ardern told local media that New Zealand wanted to give some Russia spooks the boot – but couldn’t find any. “We’ve done a check in New Zealand, we don’t have any undeclared intelligence officers. If we did, we would expel them,” Ardern told RNZ.

The prime minister speculated that the absence of “undeclared intelligence officers” sneaking around New Zealand is probably due to the fact that there isn’t much for the Russians to spy on. “Of course, there’s a range of international interest that countries will have. Does it surprise me that New Zealand’s not top of their list? No, actually,” she said.

The fruitless Kiwi spy hunt comes amid a coordinated purge of Russian diplomats by the UK’s closest allies, including France, Germany and the US. In total, more than 20 nations declared they would send Russian diplomats home. London has called for reprisals against Moscow after accusing Russia of poisoning former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury on March 4.

However, not all nations have pledged their unconditional support for London’s diplomatic offensive. Vienna announced on Monday that it would not expel Russian diplomats from Austria, choosing instead to “keep open channels of dialogue” with Moscow. Slovakia also joined Vienna’s position, saying it would follow UK’s call for expulsion.

Moscow has vehemently denied any involvement in the incident and has requested full access to the evidence so that a transparent investigation can be carried out. Russia has said that expulsions of its diplomats will be reciprocated.

Tom ‘two-dinners’ Watson joins Guantanamo solidarity hunger strike https://briefnews.eu/tom-two-dinners-watson-joins-guantanamo-solidarity-hunger-strike/ https://briefnews.eu/tom-two-dinners-watson-joins-guantanamo-solidarity-hunger-strike/#respond Tue, 17 Oct 2017 11:48:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tom-two-dinners-watson-joins-guantanamo-solidarity-hunger-strike/

Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson has gone on a hunger strike in solidarity with prisoners in Guantanamo Bay.

Watson will go without food and will drink only water as he protests against the treatment of Ahmed Rabbani and Khalid Qasim in the US-controlled prison in Cuba.

According to reports, the prisoners have gone without food for 26 days. Both say they have experienced more than 10 years of “torture, injustice and indifference” in detention.

The Labour MP, who is known in some Westminster circles as Tom ‘two-dinners’ Watson, wrote to the Guardian explaining his decision.

He said the prison will not force feed the Rabbani and Qasim because of rule changes and the pair have been denied medical treatment. He also claims that they are not being correctly monitored by prison staff.

“This is not some George Osborne-inspired weight-loss plan,” he joked, poking fun at the fitness-conscious former Tory chancellor.

Watson also called on British Prime Minister Theresa May to intervene in the situation.

Rabbani, a citizen of Pakistan, has been detained at Guantanamo for over 12 years, while Yemeni Qasim has been held there for more than 15 years.

Major Ben Sakrisson, a spokesman for the Department of Defense (DoD), told the Guardian that the prison will no longer feed prisoners through the nose when they go on hunger strike.

“There has not been a change in policy.

“Existing policy is just being reinforced with our personnel,” he said.

“In some instances in the past, attempts to provide detainees who claimed that they were on hunger strike with a measure of dignity through voluntary enteral feedings unintentionally created a situation that potentially encouraged future hunger strikes. As a result, the pre-existing standard of medical necessity will be enforced in the future.”

Hunger strikes in Guantanamo occur frequently when inmates protest against their sentences and their treatment.

Medical experts say it takes around six to eight weeks to die from malnutrition for a previously healthy person.

Severe and lasting medical issues can be caused in as little as four weeks.

French Bretons rally for own self-determination & in solidarity with Catalonia (VIDEO, PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/french-bretons-rally-for-own-self-determination-in-solidarity-with-catalonia-video-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/french-bretons-rally-for-own-self-determination-in-solidarity-with-catalonia-video-photos/#respond Sun, 01 Oct 2017 01:54:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/french-bretons-rally-for-own-self-determination-in-solidarity-with-catalonia-video-photos/

Several hundred pro-regional independence activists have marched through the streets of Nantes, calling for reunification with the Brittany region of France and greater autonomy from the central government in Paris.

While the city of Nantes is officially part of the Pays de la Loire region, the district is historically and culturally tied to Brittany, one of 18 French regions.

On Saturday, a rally attended by some 300 native Bretons demanded the city be incorporated into the region of Brittany, which they argued should subsequently declare its independence from the central government in Paris.

The rally was timed ahead of Sunday’s scheduled referendum in the Catalonia region of Spain. Waving Catalan and regional Brittany flags, activists marched peacefully through the streets of Nantes chanting ‘Separation for Brittany’ as police officers watched on.

“We are organizing a demo to show that this part of Brittany is in Brittany which is not officially recognized by France and we want to show solidarity with the Catalan movement in favor of independence and we ask to fight more here in Brittany for the right for the sovereignty of nation for all of the Brittany. From Nantes to Brest,” activist Goel Roblin told RT’s Ruptly video agency.

The Bretons are a Celtic people who have roots in Brittany, bordering the Normandy and Pays de la Loire regions. Their ancestors migrated from the southwest of England to France between the 4th and 6th centuries. About half a million people in Brittany and beyond consider Breton to be their native tongue.

Breton nationalism combines both political and cultural aspects. The political aspirations of Breton nationalists include the right to self-rule and to gain more power in the European Union, the United Nations, and other international institutions.

The independence call in Brittany follows similar aspirations by Catalans and Basques in Spain and the Scots in the UK.

“We have to fight to go for word and to organize a condition to exercise on yourself the right of self-determination,” Roblin said. We want “to be able to manage our things on our own. We have the right like every small nation to be a republic and to organize a better way of life here in Brittany like the Catalans want to do,” the independence activist added.

On September 6, Catalonia’s Parliament passed a bill paving the way for an independence referendum to be held on October 1. The Spanish government, however, insists the proposed referendum is illegal, and to prevent the vote from going ahead, the central government has, among other measures, deployed police to shut voting stations and intimidate those who want to take part in the plebiscite.

LIVE UPDATES: Catalonia pushes ahead with independence referendum

Despite the Spanish government’s moves, Catalan authorities are determined to hold the referendum on Sunday. Activists have occupied dozens of schools intended to be used as polling stations to stop police from shutting it down.

Wonder said it was an emotional night for him, saying “my mother cries in heaven for me.”

“She left me in a world where she believed I would be able to see. And I do,” he said. “But not in the way she imagined.

“What I have seen too much if is breaking my heart,” Wonder said, referring to the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville last month. “I have seen hate marching down the streets disguised as a cry for equality.” And, he said, “If can see it, dammit, I know you can see it.

Wonder then dropped to one, then both knees, with the help of his son Kwame. “I take a knee for America and two knees in prayer for our world,” he said. “Amen.”

At a concert in honor of Charlottesville held at the University of Virginia Sunday, Pharell Williams followed Wonder’s example.

“If I want to get on my knees right now for the people in my city…for the people in my state — that’s what that flag is for,” Wiliams said.

SOLIDARITY: A bumper 16 MILLION tourists visit Paris despite recent terrorist attacks https://briefnews.eu/solidarity-a-bumper-16-million-tourists-visit-paris-despite-recent-terrorist-attacks/ https://briefnews.eu/solidarity-a-bumper-16-million-tourists-visit-paris-despite-recent-terrorist-attacks/#respond Thu, 31 Aug 2017 16:17:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/solidarity-a-bumper-16-million-tourists-visit-paris-despite-recent-terrorist-attacks/

France has been a target for terrorists with the country suffering a number incidents since 2015.

The country’s capital city, Paris, united in the face of terrorism after an attack in November 2015 killed 130 people. And newly-released tourist numbers have revealed the rest of the world is uniting against the horror too.

Despite the rumours of tourists avoiding the city, it’s reported the capital has welcomed a record number of tourists in the first six months of 2017.

It is great news for France which relies on tourism, generating seven per cent of the country’s national income.

The number released by the Regional Tourism Authority (CRT) recorded 16.4 million arrivals from January to June.

This is the highest number of visitors within the first half of a year since 2008, which implies a strong recovery in spite of the recent attacks.

Taking into account the popular summer months of July and August, the city could welcome up to 34 million tourists this year, up by four million from last year.

Frederic Valletoux, president of the Paris region tourist board, stated in a news conference: “(This) could be a record year but let’s not get carried away.

“Will Barcelona have an impact on other destinations like Paris? It’s hard to say. It’s Europe.

“It took three years for New York to bounce back after the Sept 11 attacks, for Madrid it was a year and for Paris also a year.

“The international situation remains turbulent and terrorism a daily threat.”

The city of Paris initially struggled after the terrorist attacks last year.

Disneyland Paris, one of the most popular attractions, suffered record losses due to the attacks.

The group turnover plummeted 6.91 per cent last year, with Euro Disney president Catherine Powell commenting: ”Disneyland Paris had an exceptionally challenging year.

“We have been impacted by various external factors that have significantly affected the tourism business in the Paris region.”

The resort is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary this year.

Manchester United v Ajax LIVE: Europa League final updates, boss' message of solidarity https://briefnews.eu/manchester-united-v-ajax-live-europa-league-final-updates-boss-message-of-solidarity/ https://briefnews.eu/manchester-united-v-ajax-live-europa-league-final-updates-boss-message-of-solidarity/#respond Wed, 24 May 2017 12:28:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/manchester-united-v-ajax-live-europa-league-final-updates-boss-message-of-solidarity/

It has been confirmed that United’s pre-match press conference will not take place and there will be minute’s silence before kick off, in light of the terror attack in Manchester on Monday.

Ajax have, however, undergone their media duties as planned.

It’s simple for Manchester United – a win against Ajax secures them Champions League football (and a shiny trophy!)

The 64th game of Jose Mourinho’s side season comes down to one match in Stockholm and it won’t be easy.

Ajax have scored 24 goals to United’s 23 en route to the final, but have conceded 15 goals to United’s eight and they are without a victory in their last six European games away from the Amsterdam ArenA.

This is United and Ajax’s fifth meeting in Europe; the past four produced two wins for each side.

And they’ve had plenty of time to rest and train following their Eredivisie season coming to an end on May 14.

Meanwhile, United only played their final match of the campaign on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace – although Mourinho did name a young side.

Former Red Devil Phil Neville has mixed emotions about covering the match after the attack on Manchester and feels some of United’s players will be affected more than others.

“When I was told I’d be working on this match, it felt like it was like Christmas Day,” said the 40-year-old. “But I don’t want to be at this game now, I want to be in Manchester.

“Players like Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, they’ve been brought up in this city. Paul Pogba was brought up in the city from the age of 14. They will find it difficult.

“From what would be the biggest games of their careers – it doesn’t feel important. It’s now a game of football of 22 players and it should be enjoyed. Football, for 90 minutes, can bring a smile back on faces of people of Manchester.”

Manchester solidarity: Jose Mourinho leads football tributes ahead of Europa League final https://briefnews.eu/manchester-solidarity-jose-mourinho-leads-football-tributes-ahead-of-europa-league-final/ https://briefnews.eu/manchester-solidarity-jose-mourinho-leads-football-tributes-ahead-of-europa-league-final/#respond Wed, 24 May 2017 00:32:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/manchester-solidarity-jose-mourinho-leads-football-tributes-ahead-of-europa-league-final/

Contractually obliged to put in a public appearance at the venue 24 hours ahead of the Europa League final, it was clear they did not want to be there but were nevertheless following the hoarse sentiment of their manager.

“We have a job to do and will fly to Sweden to do that job,” Jose Mourinho had said.

The Portuguese led them on to the pitch; as soon as was appropriate, he led them off again. All the time, a giant screen above their heads showed live images of Ajax manager Peter Bosz conducting his press conference as usual.

Mourinho and the United players could not hear the words but they found sympathetic ears all across the globe.

“What happened yesterday evening in Manchester is something we all feel in Ajax and on behalf of all of us at Ajax we express our sympathies with the victims that fell,” Bosz said. “The feeling that prevails is the final does not have the glow it should have.

Ajax boss Peter Bosz expressed his deepest sympathies to the people of Manchester

“It should be a football feast but, because of the events in Manchester, we are affected. It is horrible. My sympathies are heartfelt.”

And yet just as football united in the aftermath of the Paris bombings behind the France team who bravely played at Wembley three nights later, this final is an important and helpful part of the process.

Ajax held a private minute’s silence ahead of training. Among them, midfielder Lasse Schone was no doubt reflecting on the horrific randomness of these despicable acts. Two weeks earlier, Ariana Grande had performed in Amsterdam and his wife and child had been in the audience.

Tonight, a curtailed pre-match ceremony and collective period of reflection before kick-off will indeed make it a very different atmosphere to the one envisaged.

Old Trafford kept its club shop doors closed yesterday as a mark of respect and tours of the ground were cancelled. As early as yesterday morning, the club’s executive vice chairman Edward Woodward had already decided a party planned for United staff back in Manchester could not now go ahead.

“Manchester is a resilient city and I’m sure that its people will defy the wishes of those who have perpetrated this awful crime and demonstrate what a magnificent place this is,” he wrote in an internal email to staff.

“The club provides counselling and support services in times of crisis; please do not be afraid to ask if you have been affected.”

Monday night’s blast at the Manchester Arena has inevitably led to increased levels of security.

“There is currently no specific intelligence which might suggest that any of the activities in Stockholm may be the target of attacks,” UEFA said in a statement.

“But due to the tight security arrangements, UEFA urges fans to arrive at the stadium as early as possible, as detailed checks will be made at the entrances, resulting in potential delays in accessing the stadium.”

Additional measures had already been put in place following the act of terrorism in Stockholm on April 7, when a stolen beer truck was driven into a flagship department store, killing four shoppers.

Outside that same Ahlens store yesterday, the residents of Stockholm were going about their business as usual, many of them pausing for a coffee on the pedestrianised street, soaking up the surprisingly warm sunshine as their conversations added to the sort of relaxed babble you would expect around a peaceful city on a summer’s evening.

Security has been stepped up at the Stockholm stadium following the attack

The first few fans from both clubs were among them, although as locals made their way home from work there was little indication that as many as 20,000 fans are expected to arrive here from Manchester by tonight.

Many of them will not have tickets but they are no longer gate-crashing a party but offering instead solidarity with those lucky enough to get inside the Friends Arena.

It will be a difficult night for all – especially the United players. For all the millions on those various contracts, this is not something any of them, recruited from all over the world, ever signed up for.

Tonight, though, they must return to the same pitch they trudged solemnly around yesterday and become beacons of resilience that represent the whole of Manchester as the world looks on.

It is not now about winning or losing – no footballing trinket could provide the smallest amount of solace to those coming to terms with such tragic grief back in Manchester.

But whatever the result, for the sake of both halves of the city, those United players must go out and play football with freedom, bravery and pride.

British students launch hunger strike in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners https://briefnews.eu/british-students-launch-hunger-strike-in-solidarity-with-palestinian-prisoners/ https://briefnews.eu/british-students-launch-hunger-strike-in-solidarity-with-palestinian-prisoners/#respond Thu, 27 Apr 2017 12:50:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/british-students-launch-hunger-strike-in-solidarity-with-palestinian-prisoners/ A group of students at Manchester University are on a hunger strike in solidarity with Palestinian political prisoners. Their action comes as students’ unions across the UK face growing scrutiny over the lawfulness of their anti-Israel stance.

The five hunger strikers said their protest is in solidarity with imprisoned Palestinians. They are also demanding that their university refuse to work with companies seen to be aiding the Israeli state.

They are further calling for disciplinary charges to be dropped against two students for their role in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

The protests against Israel’s treatment of Palestinians has led some Jewish students to sense growing anti-Semitism on campus.

Devora Khafi from Queen Mary University of London is part of the 10,000-strong Jewish student community in the UK. She says she sought counseling as a result of strong pro-Palestinian sentiment on campus.

She told the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire program she thinks her connection to Israel has made people confrontational towards her.

“If I ever express a viewpoint in class or on social media, I get comments, in public or private,” she told the BBC.

“It has been hard. It’s been two years of constant fighting for our freedom of speech, our rights, our well-being. I’ve missed deadlines, I’ve had counseling, I’ve had anxiety episodes.”

Students’ unions have been registered as charities since 2010, meaning they have a legal duty to represent their members.

Any statements they make must be relevant to matters affecting the student body only.

Now the Charity Commission is assessing whether taking an official anti-Israel stand could be illegal.

Students’ unions supporting the BDS movement include Belfast, Birkbeck, Brunel, Essex, Exeter, Goldsmiths, King’s College London, Kingston, Lancashire, Liverpool, Manchester, SOAS, Strathclyde, Sussex, Swansea, University of Arts London, and UCL.

London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) students’ union was one of the first to embrace the BDS movement after a referendum in 2015.

Sai Englert, a Jewish PhD student at SOAS and a member of the university’s Palestine Society, said: “The idea that somehow supporting BDS, supporting boycott etc. is a blanket boycott on individuals I think is very dangerous. It’s not.

“It’s about saying ‘we don’t want institutional links, economic links, political links with institutions, governments, companies that are complicit in attacks on rights,’” Englert remarked, according to the BBC.

Protests are expected at SOAS on Thursday against a visit by the Israeli ambassador to the UK, Mark Regev, to discuss potential peace solutions in the Israeli-Palestine conflict.

A letter signed by 150 students and staff from SOAS and other institutions across the UK addressed to university director Valerie Amos has urged her to intervene to stop the meeting taking place.

“We fear that if this provocative event proceeds as planned, it will cause substantial distress and harm to many of our students and staff who are, have been or will be affected by the actions of what a recent UN report refers to as the Israeli ‘apartheid regime,’” the letter read.
