Jonathan Van-Tam was asked during his Good Morning Britain appearance whether he believes the UK should introduce documents that prove vaccinations so sectors of the country can reopen. Some campaigners have shown opposition to the coronavirus vaccine passports as an assault on individual liberty and a way to force people to have the vaccine through a backdoor. Professor Van-Tam argued the UK does not force people to take any medical treatments in a statement that indicates the government advisor might be sceptical about their rollout.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, host Piers Morgan asked Prof Van-Tam: “Is it morally justified for a government to say, for example, that if you want to go into restaurants or gyms or bars or nightclubs, to get them back open again.

“To recharge the economy, then you have to show, as they’re now doing in Israel, they’re now showing a vaccine certificate.

“Do you support that, do you think there’s a moral issue in telling people you’ve got to show a bit of paper to show you’ve been vaccinated before you can have your freedom fully back?”

The Professor replied: “I think the government’s announced that it’s going to look at this and look at the whole area in quite some detail.

“And it wouldn’t be right of me to comment, at that point, other than to say I think they are plausible arguments and there are plausible arguments for and plausible arguments against.

“But we’ve never lived in a society here where we force medical treatments on people.”

Earlier in his interview, Prof Van-Tam said it was likely to see Covid resurge in winter much like flu or other infectious diseases.

He explained the virus would evolve to infect humans better depending on the seasons.

In an interview earlier this week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed a task force was looking into vaccine passports and the ethics behind using them.

The review, led by Cabinet Minister Michael Gove, will look at whether their use would be effective to reopen some areas of the UK and control the spread of COVID-19.

The Government is investigating whether an app, similar to Test and Trace, could be used.

DON’T MISS

The Prime Minister added it was likely to see vaccine passports rolled out for international travel as some countries have been pushing for their introduction.

Greece has been pushing for the documents as a way to reopen its tourism sector and will urge the EU to implement them at a meeting later this week.

Campaigners are worried the vaccination passports may discriminate against those from third-world countries who would be prevented from travelling since their vaccination programmes are not as advanced.

Just hours after Netflix cancelled The Society, stars Kathryn Newton and Gideon Adlon have taken to Instagram to lament the show’s abrupt ending.

“I’m heartbroken, so heartbroken,” Newton said in an Instagram video after Netflix reversed its earlier decision to renew the teen mystery for Season 2. The actress then invited her castmate Adlon to join her in delivering a message to their passionate fans. The un-renewal is “definitely a bit of a gut-punch,” Adlon shared. “We’re definitely bummed about it. It’s a big bummer. But this is the way things work sometimes. We have no control over it.”

Newton noted that although the world is “upside down” right now amidst the coronavirus pandemic, “we all really wanted to go back,” she said. “Everything was written. I can’t even believe it.”

Added Adlon: “I’m sorry we left it on such a cliffhanger. We didn’t want that. We’ve all actually been waiting to go back. We thought we were going back pretty soon, actually.”

“I’m so sad. I loved The Society so much. I loved Allie. And I loved our cast,” Newton concluded.

The Society was picked up for Season 2 in in July 2019; new episodes were expected to drop sometime this year. Netflix on Friday confirmed that the cancellation was swayed by the coronavirus pandemic, which impacted the production schedule and budget.

Secret Society of Second-Born Royals Trailer: Skylar Astin Guides Rebel Teens Into Battle on Disney+ This Summer https://briefnews.eu/secret-society-of-second-born-royals-trailer-skylar-astin-guides-rebel-teens-into-battle-on-disney-this-summer/ https://briefnews.eu/secret-society-of-second-born-royals-trailer-skylar-astin-guides-rebel-teens-into-battle-on-disney-this-summer/#respond Wed, 27 May 2020 21:32:10 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/secret-society-of-second-born-royals-trailer-skylar-astin-guides-rebel-teens-into-battle-on-disney-this-summer/

A first-born royal may inherit the throne, but on Disney+, it’s the younger sibling that rules. All that and more is explained in the just-released trailer for Secret Society of Second-Born Royals, a new movie premiering Friday, July 17. Watch:

The movie stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Andi Mack) as Sam, a “rebellious teenage royal who unknowingly develops superpowers from a genetic trait attributed only to second-borns of royal lineage. Second-in-line to the throne of the kingdom of Illyria, Sam constantly questions what it means to be royal and wants to create her own legacy. Unlike Sam’s picture-perfect older sister Eleanor (Fuller House‘s Ashley Liao) who will become the next queen, Sam would rather rock out with her bandmate and best friend Mike (The Walking Dead‘s Noah Lomax) at an illegal protest or ditch a royal engagement for a wild night out.”

But wait, there’s more! “Fed up with her daughter’s misbehavior, Queen Catherine (Daredevil‘s Elodie Yung) sends Sam to a summer boarding school where she and four other second-born royals — Tuma (This Is Us‘ Niles Fitch), Roxana (Home and Away‘s Olivia Deeble), January (Once Upon a Time‘s Isabella Blake Thomas) and Matteo (Raven’s Home‘s Faly Rakotohavana) — discover they have unique super-human abilities and are invited to join a secret society with a longstanding tradition of covertly keeping the peace. With a new sense of purpose and a little help from their Secret Society instructor James (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist‘s Skylar Astin), Sam and her fellow royal recruits must learn to harness their newfound powers and work together as a team before they can save the world.”

‘I’ve heard a lot of b******t – you weren’t there!’ D-Day veteran SLAMS ignorant society https://briefnews.eu/ive-heard-a-lot-of-bt-you-werent-there-d-day-veteran-slams-ignorant-society/ https://briefnews.eu/ive-heard-a-lot-of-bt-you-werent-there-d-day-veteran-slams-ignorant-society/#respond Fri, 08 Nov 2019 13:57:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ive-heard-a-lot-of-bt-you-werent-there-d-day-veteran-slams-ignorant-society/

When Naga Munchetty interviewed World War II veteran Harry Billinge in June earlier this year, the video captured the hearts of the nation. On today’s BBC Breakfast instalment, Harry was welcomed into the studio by Naga and Charlie Stayt to discuss his staggering fundraising efforts and gave the veteran a glimpse of what his hard work has achieved.

Naga introduced: “I’m sure many of you will remember Harry Billinge the 94-year-old war veteran who captured the hearts of millions of people when he appeared on Breakfast earlier this year.”

Charlie added: “He spoke about being amongst the first wave of troops of the D-Day landings aged just 18.”

“And he said he could never forget his comrades who lost their lives telling us they were heroes, now his emotional comments won him admirers from all over the world,” Naga said.

When Harry joined the hosts in the studio, discussion soon turned to the last time him and Naga had met.

Charlie said: “When you first came in here a moment ago and I’m thinking back to when you met Naga on the beach and you had that moment, the first thing you said to Naga just now was I owe you an apology.”

“I do,” Harry admitted. “Well she’s a lovely person, she’s very kind, a very good golfer, she’s lovely.

“I’m very sensitive and I could see she was a bit upset when I told her nobody can ever describe D-Day.

“I’ve heard a lot of b******t and that’s true. Nobody was there,” he remarked.

Praising the veteran, one viewer wrote: “#BBCBreakfast if anyone can say b******t live on telly it’s Harry.”

“Harry dropping a casual ‘b******t’ on live TV! What a great soldier and servant to this country, I could listen to him all day #BBCBreakfast,” another wrote.

“ABSOLUTE LIVING LEGEND! THAT’S ALL1 My heart feels so warm watching Mr Harry Bilinge. Hero! Thank you! #BBCBreakfast #RemembranceDay,” another added.

A fourth tweeted: “Harry has taken over #BBCBreakfast love it cracking the b******t in the morning.”

Later on, Naga and Charlie showed Harry footage of the memorial the veteran has been desperately fundraising for.

Naga confirmed Harry wanted to raise £22,442 as he clarified: “That’s a pound for every bloke that died on that beach on D-Day.”

“And you reached the target, brilliant,” Naga continued. “But what you’ve been contributing to is a bigger memorial so all the names of those could be [remembered].

“I want to show you something because it’s difficult isn’t when you’re raising money for something but can’t see it.

“If you look in this big screen over here we can show you what’s been done so far and you’ve never seen this before.”

“No, never,” Harry confirmed as he tried to hold back tears.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Harry struggled to convey how he felt as Naga went over to comfort him.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.

The Society BACKLASH: ‘Too much’ Fans in UPROAR at sex scenes overload https://briefnews.eu/the-society-backlash-too-much-fans-in-uproar-at-sex-scenes-overload/ https://briefnews.eu/the-society-backlash-too-much-fans-in-uproar-at-sex-scenes-overload/#respond Wed, 22 May 2019 04:43:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-society-backlash-too-much-fans-in-uproar-at-sex-scenes-overload/

Fans of the Netflix drama have complained about the number of intimate scenes packed into the 10-episode season and believe it to be an overload.

The Society was released on May 10 and charts a large group of 17 to 18 year olds who return to their home town after a school trip to find it deserted.

They transform into sex and violence-crazed teenagers and it appears it is too much for some fans.

In the first two episodes, there are nine recorded sex scenes, which represents a large proportion of those episodes.

Fans have had enough and took to Twitter to air their feelings.

One shocked fan said: “The Society needs to calm down with all these sex scenes.”

Another added: “There’s too much sex going on in this show.”

A third fan went further: “The new Netflix series The Society is wack, after every little thing that happens there’s a sex scene or something sexual on screen hands down.”

Another could not believe their eyes: “I just started watching The Society on Netflix. If this is young adult, damn. Those teenagers are having more sex then most adults.”

However, a Forbes review suggests the Netflix does not go far enough.

The review claims: “Despite all its YA (Young Adult) shenanigans, The Society is still just a little too… standard for its own good. And this seems to be the case with every younger-demo sewing Netflix series of this type. Sabrina, The Order, even dating all the way back to Hemlock Grove, all these shows feel just a hair too grounded.

“A hair too in control of themselves.

“The Society is fine. It’s typical Netflix.

“But typical Netflix is really growing stale these days, and for a series with such a wacky Lord of The Flies premise as this, there really needed to be more of a willingness on the show’s part to ride on the wild side.”

The final moments of The Society were set at a reading, where everyone was wearing yellow ribbons and were gathered around a plaque with all the teens’ names on them and the words “We Remember Them”.

This seems to confirm the theory that the teens have found themselves in a parallel universe, meaning there must be a way they can return home.

However, the episode gives no clues as to how they can return and where they actually are.

Though no details have emerged about The Society season two, Allie (played by Kathryn Newton) could be one of the first casualties of the next series.

At the end of the season finale, the “military” of the town stage a coup, which sees Allie deposed as mayor over false charges that she faked the election.

It suggests Campbell might meet a sticky end if there is another series of The Society.

The Society is streaming now on Netflix.

She Disrupted Financial Services. Now It's on to South African Society https://briefnews.eu/she-disrupted-financial-services-now-its-on-to-south-african-society/ https://briefnews.eu/she-disrupted-financial-services-now-its-on-to-south-african-society/#respond Tue, 11 Dec 2018 05:46:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/she-disrupted-financial-services-now-its-on-to-south-african-society/ “What are we all going to do next?”

The question took Magda Wierzycka — then CEO of African Harvest Fund Managers — by surprise. She was focused on fulfilling the majority shareholder’s wish to sell the business and “hadn’t given the future much thought.”

“There are about six of us,” continued Niki Giles, the firm’s chief financial officer, “who’d like to do whatever you’re doing.”

Since then, Sygnia — the asset management company born out of that 2006 conversation — has disrupted (and angered) the closed South African financial services industry, by introducing passive management to the country, by disclosing all costs to clients and by slashing fees by 70 to 80 percent. What’s more, in the past year and a half, Wierzycka has become an outspoken anti-corruption activist, gaining as many devoted acolytes as sworn enemies. “I just wish a few other business leaders would do the same,” says veteran anti-corruption journalist Martin Welz, before positing that everyone else is either “too scared to say anything … or complicit in the corruption.”

[While most business leaders] buried their heads in the sand, I decided to take an active stance.

Magda Wierzycka

Wierzycka is used to being an outsider. She arrived in South Africa at age 13, after her medical doctor parents had been made economic refugees by communist Poland. After securing a place at the prestigious Pretoria High School for Girls, Magda was faced with the small matter of learning to speak both English and Afrikaans. Despite it being a “terrible, terrible time,” she excelled in both high school and college — her Soviet foundation in math and science served her well — and, after qualifying as an actuary, went on to occupy a string of increasingly senior roles at some of the biggest names in the South African financial services industry.

Fast-forward to 2006 and Sygnia’s accidental genesis. In rented offices, Wierzycka, Giles (now Sygnia’s chief operating officer) and a few others struggled to hammer out an identity for their fledgling company, let alone a business model. They settled on three potentially unique selling points. South Africa at the time had very few “funds of funds” and no passively managed funds, so the group decided to enter both markets. And Wierzycka was able to hang on to African Harvest’s “incredibly robust management software” as part of the buyout deal.

Almost immediately this software brought them two major clients (SEI in Philadelphia and one of South Africa’s largest private pension funds) that weren’t interested in Sygnia’s financial products but did desperately need its administrative powers. Being able to “put their logos on slides” made Sygnia “instant somebodies,” Wierzycka says, giving the company credibility as it pushed its low-cost model.

Within a year, the world plunged into financial turmoil, a storm Sygnia navigated by always being “only one step ahead” of the legal and financial demands, says Wierzycka, “like a hamster on a wheel.” On the backs of its low-fee products, the company has since grown to $ 14.7 billion in assets under management.

It’s not just Sygnia’s low fees and full disclosure that make Wierzycka unpopular among the old guard. She talks candidly about the “many barriers to entry” faced by women in financial services and the “EQ weaponry” needed to fight them. For her, this means learning how to speak up in meetings and to “never take things personally” — especially during bonus negotiations.

M 538

The latter skill has been put to the test recently as Wierzycka’s outspoken anti-corruption views have led to death threats and the dissemination of poorly photoshopped images of her head on dominatrices’ torsos that purported to reveal “Magda’s secret past.” As luck would have it, our interview coincided with the publication of a 1,000-word character assassination by one of her many targets: Black-owned Sagarmatha Technologies Ltd. (a new arm of one of the most aggressive and controversial media firms in the country), via a deputy chairwoman, accused Wierzycka of “covert racism” and called her “a minnow and publicity-seeking asset manager” for questioning its financial fundamentals. “I’ll sue. I’ll win. And I’ll donate the money to charity,” Wierzycka told me.

Last year was “a big year,” she says, referring to the succession of scandals that ultimately led to the collapse of the Zuma government. While most business leaders “buried their heads in the sand, I decided to take an active stance,” she says. Wierzycka, who for two decades had written articles about financial topics as PR for her various employers, turned her hand to investigative journalism. One “Sunday afternoon on the couch,” while perusing the Security and Exchange Commission reports of Nasdaq-listed NET1 — the company in charge of South Africa’s social grant system — she unpacked the “horror show” of a company with a “stated financial objective [to] exploit the most vulnerable strata of society.”

Since lifting the lid on NET1, Wierzycka has pursued them and other targets relentlessly, writing regular columns for two publications and tweeting prolifically. (In March she quit Twitter not long after a tweet promoting hiring more household help as economic stimulus was labeled racist, and while she says she’ll never “tweet for the sake of it” again, she hints that she will be back.) She has even offered rewards for any information leading to the apprehension of members of the Gupta family, who have become synonymous with the state capture presided over by President Jacob Zuma.

Wierzycka’s activism is a personal endeavor (Giles says, though, that the Sygnia board is “behind her all the way”) and she says any positive PR for Sygnia is a “secondary consequence.” Welz, the seasoned journalist, is not convinced, “but who cares? Every company markets itself … so why not market yourself by doing the right thing?” Either way, while Wierzycka would love to focus entirely on Sygnia, she’s well aware that the situation in South Africa likely requires more muckraking.

Instead of “whingeing,” she’s pushing ahead with plans to launch South Africa’s first cryptocurrency exchange later this year. And she’s working on a “really big idea” that she hopes will make the firm money and bring “lots of social benefits” to the African continent. Whatever it is, it won’t be quiet.

  • Noncash payments are on the rise worldwide.
  • As new players emerge to capitalize on consumer appetite for digital payment methods, three mature markets — the UK, Australia, and Sweden — have become standouts for what a more cashless society could look like.
  • The UK, Australia, and Sweden are transitioning to digital particularly well, and can serve as a roadmap for other mature markets seeking to overcome the legacy channel of cash.

Noncash payments have been gaining popularity around the world for the last decade. And though cash isn’t anywhere near dead, its global growth is slowing as consumers turn to emerging cashless alternatives.
