A passenger plane from Moscow has made a rough landing in Sochi, hitting a fence, losing a wing and catching fire, according to reports. It took the Boeing 737 from two attempts to land in Sochi, southern Russia, an emergency services source told Interfax, although it is not yet unclear what hindered the first try. When the crew managed to land the plane, it overshot the runway and hit a fence, losing its left wing, according to the source. One of the plane’s engines caught fire and was later extinguished. Four people were reportedly injured in the incident. Passengers have been evacuated from the plane. A video released by Russian news outlet Ren-TV purports to show the plane engulfed in flames near the runway. MORE DETAILS TO FOLLOW Mac Marcoux has always had a need for speed. While growing up in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Marcoux and his family raced around on go-carts, dirt bikes and snowmobiles. If it went fast, Marcoux wanted to be a part of it. But that rush of zipping around hit a speed bump when he was eight years old — he was losing his vision due to a degenerative condition known as Stargardt’s disease. By nine, Marcoux was legally blind. That wasn’t about to slow down Marcoux or anyone else in his family. “We tried to look for sports the whole family could do. We all did everything together,” said the 19-year-old Paralympian. “First we looked at Nordic skiing but it didn’t sound like the most riveting thing coming from go-cart racing.” If it wasn’t going to be Nordic skiing, then maybe alpine skiing would suffice — the lure of racing down a snowy slope surpassing 100 km/h was much more appealing to Marcoux. “We got in touch with Alpine Canada and they reassured us it was a sport for vision impaired athletes,” Marcoux recalled. “So we all jumped into a local group here.” In 2011, Marcoux and his brother Billy Joe got serious about alpine skiing. They needed a way to communicate while racing down the hill together. At first they went online and bought a pair of two-way radios they mounted in their helmets so that Billy Joe could guide Mac down the hill. The two then got in touch with Alpine Canada to find out what other guides and skiers use. “They had older styles we looked online for, helmet to helmet radios, and we found some they use for motorcycles,” Mac Marcoux said. And off they went. The two practised relentlessly — it wasn’t long until the brothers were noticed by the national team and invited to start training with them. “We spent the next full season doing training camps as prospects,” Marcoux said. “The next season in 2013 we worked with the World Cup team race by race. It turned out we ended up racing the entire World Cup season.” At just 16, Marcoux had made Canada’s Paralympic team alongside his brother Billy Joe. But then the unthinkable happened, just a week and a half before the Games. Billy Joe suffered a back injury. The brothers who had spent their entire careers together for this moment wouldn’t be able to live their Paralympic dream together. “The crazy thing about Sochi was that we trained together from when I was eight until I was 16,” Marcoux said. “I feel like there was a lot of pressure we put on ourselves. And then to have that happen, it was kind of a blessing because it removed all expectations.” Marcoux scrambled to find a replacement. Robin Femy stepped in last minute. Remarkably, the two joined forces to capture a gold and two bronze medals in Sochi. After the 2016 season Billy Joe retired leaving his brother in need of a new guide in the lead up to the 2018 Paralympics. It’s not the easiest process, admitted Marcoux. There’s a lot that goes into being a good guide. Both Marcoux and Alpine Canada put out the call and waited anxiously. Former Alberta provincial team skier Jack Leith came forward and it was an immediate fit. “I just got so lucky. He’s a hell of a guy and an amazing skier,” Marcoux said. Leitch admits he wasn’t too sure what he was getting into but that quickly changed the second the two got on the slopes two years ago in Chile. “I was pretty damn nervous,” Leitch said. “I wasn’t sure what he was capable of. His ski ability is unbelievable. He has one of the best touches on snow I’ve ever seen. It’s amazing.” Marcoux said there’s an incredible level of trust that goes into a guide while speeding down a hill. The guide is alerting the skier to so many different things all at once that communication is crucial — what to say and what not to say is the key. “I can’t do what I do without a great guide. So I had some fear about finding that next guide,” Marcoux said. “It was a much faster transition than I thought it would be. It only took us a couple days and we were going full tilt. I could trust him immediately.” The two are coming off an extraordinary season that saw them win four golds and a silver at the World Para Alpine Skiing Championships in Italy last January. Marcoux and Leitch were also crowned World Cup downhill season champions last year. Leitch is now entering his first Paralympics as Marcoux’s guide and is bursting with pride over getting to wear the Canadian colours at the pinnacle of sport. “I’ve dreamed about this forever. It might not have been the road I thought I’d take to get there but I’m so grateful for this opportunity,” he said. Starting Friday night at 7:25 p.m. ET, and throughout the Paralympics, Marcoux will zip down the mountain following the careful direction of Leitch. His need for speed satiated — just not in the way he ever imagined. “When I was a little kid and you asked me what I wanted to do I probably wouldn’t have said a visually impaired ski racer. But I’ve been so blessed by the opportunities that have come my way.”

On Thursday CAS reinstated results of 28 Russian athletes, making them eligible to compete in the 2018 Winter Games, overturning their life-bans over alleged doping.
The move doesn’t necessarily mean that these 28 athletes will be invited to the 2018 Games, the IOC said in a statement issued shortly after the announcement of the CAS decision.
“Not being sanctioned does not automatically confer the privilege of an invitation,” the organization stressed.
The CAS ruling, however, puts Russia back on top of the overall medal count for the 2014 Sochi Games. The IOC still has to approve the decision regarding the medals.
Originally Russia topped the overall medal table in Sochi with 13 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze medals, while Norway finished second with 11 gold, five silver and 10 bronze medals, followed by Canada and the US.
The host nation of 2014 Olympics lost first place after it was stripped of number of medals by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), over alleged doping manipulations. These, however, were not proven.

Following the CAS decision on Thursday, Russia now stands 11 gold, nine silver and nine bronze medals. Cross-country skier Alexander Legkov and a skeleton competitor Aleksandr Tretiakov regained their gold medals, while another cross-country skier, Maxim Vylegzhanin, had his three silver medals reinstated.
Luger Albert Demchenko received two bronze medals, while speed-skater Olga Fatkulina and skeleton racer Elena Nikitina added two more medals to the overall 2014 medal count for Russia.

The opening speech by Russia’s Foreign Minister at the Syrian peace forum in Sochi veered off script somewhat, when attendees expressed pro and anti-Russian sentiment as Sergey Lavrov took the floor.
Various factions of Syrian society gathered in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi for the summit, aimed at laying the foundation for peace in the war-torn country and boosting the stalled Geneva talks.
Nearly 1,600 invitations had been sent out to a range of groups and individuals in a bid to give a voice to all the sides interested in a peaceful resolution of the Syrian crisis.

Some used that voice to shout out of turn. As Lavrov greeted the delegates, one of them stood up to express his support for Moscow, chanting “Long live Russia, long live friendship” in Russian. As a few more joined the man, the minister had to call on the chorus to break off, assuring they’d have their turn in the discussions that would follow.
Others, though, were not as approving, as at least one man could be heard shouting angrily in Arabic while Lavrov was speaking. Apparently annoyed, the delegate gestured and continued his rant until two security guards approached him, while the other delegates picked up their ‘Long live Russia’ chant again.
While many participants from various opposition and social groups from Syria, as well as the UN’s Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, gathered for the National Dialogue Congress, a group of representatives from the armed Syrian opposition refused to leave the airport on arrival in Sochi, saying they were offended by the presence of the Syrian state’s flag and emblem.
Russia offered to host the forum in Sochi following a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Syrian counterpart Bashar Assad. The proposal was eventually endorsed by Iran and Turkey, guarantors of the Syrian peace process along with Russia.

The Syrian National Dialogue Congress starts in the Russian resort city of Sochi on Monday. The event is expected to last for two days, with the main negotiations taking place on Tuesday.
The Congress is sponsored by Russia, Turkey and Iran. The leaders of the three countries agreed to hold the all-Syrian Congress back in November. The main goal of the meeting is to gather “delegates from various political parties, internal and external opposition, ethnic and confessional groups at the negotiating table,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the time.
Over 1,500 delegates, representing various groups in Syrian society, have been invited to participate in the talks, expected to pave the way for a peaceful future for the war-torn country. The Congress delegates are expected to begin work on a new constitution, and to discuss other aspects of reconciliation in Syria.

It will be a landmark event, as it is the first to give voice to so many different groups from Syrian society, the government and the opposition. While instant reconciliation is unlikely, the Congress will be a large step into the right direction, Kremlin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.
“The work that is going on is extremely complex and thorny. But holding the congress itself is a significant step towards a political solution,” Peskov stated. “One should not expect that the political reconciliation will be achieved in Sochi.”
The Congress in Sochi is not designed to replace, but rather to boost the Syrian peace process, namely the UN-sponsored Geneva talks, which have been stalling for years, largely due to the unwillingness of some Syrian opposition representatives to engage in talks with the country’s government without unrealistic preconditions.
“We believe … that the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi will be able to create conditions for staging fruitful Geneva talks, taking into considerations that the part of the Syrian opposition that constantly makes preconditions, including for regime change, will be talked into sense by those who control it,” Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier in January.
The Saudi Arabia-based High Negotiations Committee (HNC), an umbrella body created back in 2016 to represent some of the Syrian rebel groups at the Geneva talks, has decided, however, to boycott the Congress just days before its launch. The group claimed it was supporting the “credible political transition” in the Geneva format instead.
The HNC, however, has not demonstrated the qualities of unity in boycotting the Sochi congress, as part of the group, namely the so-called Moscow and Cairo opposition platforms, voted to attend the event and are expected to take part.
The decision to boycott was allegedly supported by 24 members of HNC, while 26 votes were needed for a decisive result, the leader of the Moscow platform, Qadri Jamil, told TASS on Saturday. The participation of some HNC members is therefore possible and would not violate the decision, according to Jamil, although they will not represent the group as a whole.
While the decision of the HNC is unlikely to harm the Congress, it definitely harmed the opposition body itself, which will now miss the chance to be heard at a large international meeting, a source in Russia’s Foreign Ministry told TASS on Saturday.
“No, it won’t affect [the Congress]. We’ve invited everyone eager to participate, who doesn’t want, does not participate. The Congress will be held without them, unfortunately, and that’s all,” the diplomatic source said.
Despite the claims of parts of the Syrian opposition that the Sochi Congress would somehow jeopardize the international peace process, it was embraced by the main sponsor of the Geneva talks – the UN. The Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, will take part in the Congress after accepting Moscow’s invitation days before the event.
“The Secretary-General is confident that the Congress in Sochi will be an important contribution to a revived intra-Syrian talks process under the auspices of the United Nations in Geneva, based on the full implementation of the Geneva Communiqué (2012) and Security Council resolution 2254 (2015),” the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a statement on Friday.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed preparations for a Syria peace conference with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu in a phone call on Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday. The ministers exchanged views on the final aspects regarding the organization of the high-profile event, to be held in the Russian city of Sochi on January 29-30. On Saturday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres promised to send his Syria peace negotiator to the conference in Sochi. Guterres is “confident that the congress in Sochi will be an important contribution” to reviving the peace talks held under UN auspices in Geneva, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement, according to AFP. Part of the Syrian opposition has meanwhile refused to attend the meeting, alleging that it is an attempt by the Syrian government’s close ally to “sideline” the current United Nations peace process.

Canada’s luge relay team doesn’t want the 2014 Olympic bronze medal heading their way to impact final preparations for the 2018 Winter Games.
Sam Edney, Alex Gough, Justin Snith and Tristan Walker learned Friday their fourth-place finish in Sochi will be upgraded to bronze — the country’s first Olympic luge medal — as a result of doping allegations against Russian competitors.
But a Luge Canada spokesman said in an email that while the team members exchanged high fives during a practice session upon hearing the news, they wouldn’t be commenting as they continue working towards the Pyeongchang Olympics, which get underway Feb. 9.
“When I talked to them they were all really excited to keep training and get after it,” Luge Canada high-performance director Walter Corey said in a phone interview with The Canadian Press. “Each of them has their own story at this point in the season.”
The International Olympic Committee ruled Friday in Lausanne, Switzerland, on the last 11 of 46 current doping cases, and said all have been disqualified from the Sochi Games and banned from the Olympics for life.
The athletes, in five different sports, include Albert Demchenko, the silver medallist in men’s luge and mixed team luge relay.
A second member of the mixed team, Tatiana Ivanova, has also been also disqualified for taking part in organized doping.
Canada finished behind gold medallist Germany, Russia and bronze winner Latvia, which now moves up a step on the podium, in Sochi. Germany also gains a bronze in the men’s event, while Italy moves up to silver.
“It’s too early to believe it’s even true, to be honest,” said Corey. “We’ve got another big event [the Olympics] that we’ve been training for that’s kind of sucked up all our focus anyhow.”
A television commentator at the 2014 Games, former Canadian luger Jeff Christie expected to be calling the country’s first Olympic medal in the sport before Edney, Gough and Snith, all from Calgary, and Walker, of Cochrane, Alta., finished a tenth of a second off the podium in the relay.
“It’s the big issue of doping in sport,” Christie said Friday in Calgary. “People say, ‘Don’t worry, eventually the medal will get awarded.’ There’s the time, there’s the moment. Athletes live for the moment. The moment wasn’t there.”
Corey said the group was disappointed to leave Russia empty-handed after finishing fourth in three separate events, but quickly pivoted to turn it into a positive.
“We held our head high and left and regrouped and tried to build towards 2018,” he said. “That was more of the focus … rather than a bunch of conspiracy theories.
“Our program was trending really well … we still saw that as a strong showing.”
Corey added that while the athletes didn’t get the recognition at the time, it doesn’t take away from the accomplishment.
“Everyone wants a fairy-tale experience,” he said. “Whether it’s your sporting career or getting engaged or any of those life-altering moments, you want them to be like a fairy tale, but it is what it is.”
Edney, Gough, Snith and Walker finished second in the relay at a World Cup race earlier this month on their home track in Calgary, just 0.041 seconds back of the Germans.
The Canadians are also hitting their stride at the right time in individual competition.
Gough won back-to-back silver medals in a pair of women’s World Cup races, Edney earned a second-place of his own in Calgary, and Snith and Walker picked up a doubles bronze in Lake Placid, N.Y.
While Christie said there’s no point in dwelling on the past, he did point out that luge funding was impacted by the lack of medals in Sochi.
“They were a Tier 3 sport,” he said. “They could have been a Tier 2 spot with [Own the Podium]. What could that have done?
“They’re still all there. Maybe the four years have pushed them to be even better.”

The 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea are officially 100 days away, and Canadian sports fans have plenty to look forward to in March. The Games run from March 9-18 and will be streamed on CBC Sports.
Canada finished third in the medal standings at the 2014 Games in Sochi, earning 16 medals — including seven gold. Biathlete Brian McKeever earned three of those gold medals and is returning for his fifth Paralympics.
What else can Canadians expect from the country’s Paralympians? Here’s a look at the sports, storylines and stars to watch out for:
The upcoming Paralympics feature six sports:
Canada earned at least one medal in five of those six sports in Sochi: para snowboarding, which was under the umbrella of para alpine in 2014, was the lone exception.
John Leslie was Canada’s top finisher in the debut sport, placing seventh in the snowboard cross event. The snowboard program will expand from two to 10 events at these Games.

Within Winter Paralympic sports, there are classifications for athletes with leg impairments, arm impairments, combined impairments in arms and legs, visual impairments and sit-skiers in the alpine and Nordic events. For example, Mark Arendz — who lost his arm in a farming accident as a child — competes in the standing category for biathlon; the sport also has sitting events and events for athletes with visual impairments.
There will inevitably be shocking upsets, photo finishes and the inevitable fallout from the ongoing Russian doping scandal at these Games. For now, here are some storylines that are worth keeping an eye on as the countdown continues.
Curling four-peat? Canada has won every Paralympic curling gold since its inception in 2006, but the world’s fourth-ranked rink faces stiff competition from Russia, China and Norway.
Hockey’s golden drought. It’s been nearly 12 years since Canada last won gold in Torino, back when current captain Greg Westlake was a teenager and 2018 chef de mission Todd Nicholson was captain. The rival United States have won back-to-back Paralympic gold in the interim.
Canada’s Nordic duo. McKeever and Arendz are stars in their own right, and both are expected to contend for individual medals in cross-country in biathlon. There is, however, the possibility that the two could join forces in an open relay event, like the historic bronze they won with Emily Young and McKeever’s guide Graham Nishikawa at the world championships in February.
Canada is sending approximately 55 athletes to Pyeongchang, and here are some names to watch once the Games begin:
Alpine skier Mac Marcoux won three medals, including giant slalom gold, at his debut Paralympics in 2014 as a 16-year-old. Marcoux, along with current guide Jack Leitch, is a multiple-medal favourite heading into Pyeongchang.
Westlake returns to lead Canada’s hockey team, with young forwards like Liam Hickey complementing veterans Billy Bridges and Adam Dixon in coach Ken Babey’s uptempo system. The team still needs to finalize its roster, including a tough decision in goal between “1A and 1B” netminders Dominique Larocque and Corbin Watson.

While Canada’s curlers have yet to be confirmed for the Games, the quartet from the 2017 world championships brings plenty of Paralympic pedigree to the sheets. Jim Armstrong and Ina Forrest won gold in 2010 and 2014, with Mark Ideson winning in 2014; third Marie Wright rounds out a potential rink.
In snowboarding, Leslie is expected to be back for another shot at the podium, and he’ll likely be joined by Michelle Salt and Alex Massie, who are coming off of strong seasons ahead of the Games.

The trilateral meeting between the Presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkey in the Russian city of Sochi this week was the “right step, at the right time” for the future of Syria, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has said. Rouhani expressed his opinion to his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad in a phone call on Saturday, Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported. The Iranian President also assured the Syrian leadership that Tehran will continue to support the country in its fight against terrorism as well as during the reconciliation process.
