Aussie goal drought continues in Russia1:03

World Cup: Australia have struggled to find the back of the net in Russia, and against Peru it was a similar story, butchering several chances in front of goal.

IN the end the agony was written on their faces, as the Socceroos’ World Cup dreams melted in the Sochi sun.

Dreaming of a win and a place in the last 16, Australia lost 2-0 to Peru even with a 37-minute cameo from Tim Cahill.

Goals in each half from Andre Carrillo and Paolo Guerrera gave Peru a consolation win, leaving Australia bottom of the group.

Even had they won their fate would have been sealed, with Denmark drawing against France to secure second place in the group.

But there was intense frustration that the performances against France and Denmark couldn’t be completed with victory.

Outgoing Socceroos coach Bert van Marwijk praised the Australian team but lamented its lack of goals throughout the group stage.

Insisting he had no regrets over his five months in charge, van Marwijk said it was a “fantastic period” for him personally in which he had learned from coaching the Australians.

“It is not a success but also not a failure,” van Marwijk said of his tenure.

“Everyone saw the way we performed and we have got lots of compliments. But compliments don’t win you games, goals do.

“We showed that when you don’t have the best players, you can still compete with France, Denmark and Peru.

“That means you can reach a lot when you work very well. But you need individual quality to decide games, you need to find a goal, and I could not find that solution.

“Against France in football terms we were at last the equal, and against Denmark we were better. Today I have the same feeling but in all three games we couldn’t make the difference with goals.”

Australia knew they faced a delicate balancing act against Peru, of not leaving themselves open while pushing for the win they needed.

An early shot from Mile Jedinak was a statement of intent, that Australia would not be intimidated by either the occasion or the massed ranks of Peruvians.

But Jedinak’s desire also got him into trouble, booked for a headhigh tackle on Christian Cueva.

As if Lima’s Estadio Nacional had been transplanted to the Russian coastline, the roar of support for their team was cacophonic — especially when their team took the lead.

In a match until then of shadow-boxing, Peru suddenly found a perfect punch. A ball over the top of the Australian defence was gathered in the corner by captain Paolo Guerrero, who looked up and curled a deep cross towards Andre Carrillo.

Arriving unheralded at the far corner of the box, Carrillo struck a perfect volley back across Mat Ryan and into the bottom corner.

That opening goal hurt Australia, even more so when replays appeared to show Peru were off-side.

And an Marwijk tended to agree.

“We had lots of chances and shots, but Peru had maybe two shots and scored,” he said.

“Their first goal I think was off-side so we didn’t have luck — though even if we had won it wouldn’t have changed anything.”

Desperately Australia tried to respond, but 24-carat chances went begging. Tom Rogic, playing like a man on a mission, ran at the Peruvians, beat four players but saw his shot beaten away by Pedro Gallese.

Then Rogic freed Robbie Kruse into the box for a cutback, but as the goal gaped for Mathew Leckie, Anderson Santamaria somehow scooped the ball away.

By halftime Australia had mustered six shots, but only one on target, a statistic that spoke volumes — especially when Peru showed them again the art of seizing the moment in the 50th minute.

Admittedly they had some luck in the process, though the move that opened up space for Cueva to charge down the left was elegant.

Cutting inside, Cuevo struck a cross that deflected off Jedinak into the path of Guerrero; the captain struck it goalwards and another slight deflection off Mark Milligan helped it past Mat Ryan.

Finally Bert van Marwijk produced his trump cards, sending on Cahill and Daniel Arzani.

Immediately there was a flurry of chances, Aziz Behich’s shot brushing the post on its way wide and Cahill’s goalbound effort hitting his own man.

Arzani hit the top of the net with a daring volley from the edge of the box, then Behich sidefooted a low cross just a fraction beyond Cahill’s run.

As the game, and the World Cup drifted away, the Australian fans were denied even the consolation of Cahill scoring at a fourth World Cup.

A day of such hope ended in bitter disappointment.

Socceroos shock as Maclaren, Bailey dumped https://briefnews.eu/socceroos-shock-as-maclaren-bailey-dumped/ https://briefnews.eu/socceroos-shock-as-maclaren-bailey-dumped/#respond Mon, 14 May 2018 20:19:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/socceroos-shock-as-maclaren-bailey-dumped/ WORLD Cup qualifying regular Bailey Wright has been axed from the Russia 2018 squad.

Long-time no.2 keeper Mitch Langerak has also been cut along with Jamie Maclaren, who scored a hat-trick for Hibernian at the weekend, after Bert van Marwijk culled the squad to 26 in time for the pre-camp starting in Antalya, Turkey on Sunday.

A-League bolters Daniel Arzani (Melbourne City), Dimi Petratos (Newcastle) and his former Jets teammate Andrew Nabbout (now based in Japan) were picked, leaving them within touching distance of a coveted berth at the world’s biggest sporting event.

Rounded out the six omissions from the extended 32-man squad named last week were Lens left-back Alex Gersbach, Czech-based stopper Aleks Susnjar and Cyprus-based striker Apostolos Giannou.

Croatian-based bolter Fran Karacic is also bound for Turkey, with van Marwijk eager to see the right-back first-hand along with the Socceroos’ record goalscorer Tim Cahill.

Wright, who was a World Cup bolter four years ago from England’s third tier progressing to 22 Socceroos caps since, is particularly stiff to be dropped.

The Bristol City captain played the eighth most minutes of any Socceroo in qualifying, and improved with every appearance during his 12 starts at stopper.

But van Marwijk opted to use current club positioning as his basis for the first XI in his debut Socceroos match against Norway, as Wright was picked at right-back on a rare international occasion, switching with Degenek at stopper.

Although Wright has been playing at right-back for Bristol of late, he is clearly more accustomed to the stopper’s role for the Socceroos, and being subbed on 52 minutes in the 4-1 loss to Norway (when the score was 2-1) was a sign of things to come.

Maclaren, who netted eight goals in 15 games since switching from German side Darmstadt to Hibs, was also stiff not to make the extended squad.

Cahill and Tomi Juric are the only recognised strikers, although versatile Nabbout is also being viewed as strike option by van Marwijk.

Langerak, who at one stage was pushing Ryan for the No.1 shirt, has been swiftly overtaken by Feyenoord keeper Brad Jones and Danny Vukovic, who’s enjoyed a sensational debut season with Belgians Genk.

Gersbach, 21, looked destined for Russia after a stunning Confederations Cup performance last year but James Meredith’s regular minutes for Millwall convinced van Marwijk he was the man to put pressure on Turkey-based Aziz Behich.

“It is always a challenging task to reduce a squad, however this is the nature of professional sport at the highest level,” van Marwijk said.

“Overall, I believe we have named a strong and ambitious squad for our training camp in Turkey and friendly against Czech Republic in Austria.

“I am sure that in training in Antalya, and in our match against the Czech Republic, we will see players pushing to go to a higher level as they compete for a place in the final squad.”

The squad will be cut to 23 by June 3, before the final friendly against Hungary in Budapest ahead of the World Cup opener against France on June 16.

‘It’s war’: Threats made over Socceroos job https://briefnews.eu/its-war-threats-made-over-socceroos-job/ https://briefnews.eu/its-war-threats-made-over-socceroos-job/#respond Fri, 15 Dec 2017 00:26:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/its-war-threats-made-over-socceroos-job/ SYDNEY FC has reportedly sent Football Federation Australia (FFA) an official warning to stay away from coach Graham Arnold.

Arnold remains contracted with the Sky Blues, despite reports the FFA has offered the veteran A-League coach the vacant Socceroos coaching job of leading Australia at the World Cup in Russia next year.

Fox Sports News reported on Wednesday night Arnold has been offered the job Ange Postecoglou walked away from following Australia’s marathon World Cup qualification campaign.

Arnold on Thursday denied he has been offered the Socceroos job.

However, the initial reports grew legs on Friday with follow-up reports indicating Sydney FC has officially warned the FFA to stay away from Arnold.

Fox Sports News’ Daniel Garb reported Sydney is set to go to war with the FFA to hold onto Arnold, despite the coach reportedly having a clause in his contract that would allow him to immediately take-up the Socceroos job.

It comes with Sydney FC and fellow A-League clubs in an open conflict with the FFA over the executive structure of football in Australia.

FFA chairman Stephen Lowy failed in his attempt to push through FFA congressional reform at an Extraordinary General Meeting which would have allowed the A-League clubs greater voting power, but would still have given the Lowy administration an overwhelming majority in the new look congress.

Arnold and the Socceroos job are now caught in the middle of that feud, Garb reports.

“I can reveal the FFA has received a letter from Sydney FC telling the organisation to ‘stay away from Graham Arnold,’” Garb said.

“(It says) Do not approach him, he is a contracted man and we are instructing you to stay away from our head coach,” Garb said.

“I don’t believe there is any contractual obligation in that letter that can stop the FFA from approaching Graham Arnold officially.”

He said Sydney FC accepts Arnold’s contract clause allows him to walk, but they plan to make it as difficult as possible for the FFA to get their man.

“There’s a war between the FFA and the clubs and Sydney FC are a major player in that,” he said.

“Things aren’t all too well between Sydney FC and the FFA and that is playing a part in this.

“But Sydney FC are going to make it very hard for the FFA, telling them to stay away from Graham Arnold.

“We understand there have been talks, he is the front runner but they are surveying options overseas. More news has also come in about Tony Popovic, but in terms of local options Arnold is very much the front runner.

“They do want him, the FFA, and I understand he would take the job if they offer it to him but Sydney FC are certainly going to stand in his way.

“If Sydney FC can have it their way, they don’t want to lose Graham Arnold at all. They do understand that the clause in his contract means he can go.”

The FFA’s expert panel to find the next coach of the Socceroos only just started defining the job criteria for Ange Postecoglou’s successor.

The FFA has reportedly claimed it only plans to interview applicants in January.

Arnold yesterday dismissed reports he’s already been offered the job.

“There’s nothing been offered, so I don’t even think about that,” Arnold said on Thursday.

“Nothing has changed for me from last week, everything is exactly the same.

“It’s obviously flattering to be considered for the national team as a proud Australian, but I have a contract with Sydney FC, I believe we’re doing well but we need to do greater than we are at the moment.”

Socceroos threat in stunning Arnold offer https://briefnews.eu/socceroos-threat-in-stunning-arnold-offer/ https://briefnews.eu/socceroos-threat-in-stunning-arnold-offer/#respond Wed, 13 Dec 2017 11:38:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/socceroos-threat-in-stunning-arnold-offer/ SYDNEY FC coach Graham Arnold has reportedly been offered the Socceroos coaching job.

Aussie football legend Mark Bosnich revealed the news on Fox Sports’ Bill and Boz on Wednesday night, coming just days after former Brazilian manager Luiz Felipe Scolari was linked to the vacanat job.

Football Federation Australia has been looking for a new coach since Ange Postecoglou walked away at the end of Australia’s World Cup qualification campaign.

Arnold has now been handed the job of leading Australia at next year’s World Cup in Russia where the Socceroos will face Denmark, France and Peru in Group C.

Fox Sports reported Arnold is yet to decide if he wants the top job.

“We’re hearing from a very good source, Boz, that the FFA is going to put the word on Graham Arnold, offer him the job,” presenter Bill Woods said.

“The word is they’re going to offer him the job but the condition is, if he says no there will be no second chance — and they’ll go and hire a foreign coach.”

The show also reported the FFA has made a play to strong-arm Arnold into accepting the job immediately, threatening to look elsewhere if the Sky Blues boss doesn’t say yes immediately.

Bosnich slammed the FFA over the report which claims they are playing games with the most important job in Australian football.

“If I was Graham Arnold, I will tell them no,” Bosnich said.

“If they want to put the pressure on me like that. No. Simple as that.

“I’m a little bit biased because I’ve gone on record as saying they should go for a big-hitter, a foreign big-hitter. Graham Arnold is head and shoulders above anyone locally. We know that. I don’t think it’s the right time for an Australian to take the job after what we’ve had with Ange Postecoglou.

“I don’t mean that disrespectfully to Ange but right now, going into the World Cup, we need someone that is going to have the kind of stature world wide to make people jump that little bit higher, run that little bit faster.”

A-League star’s World Cup intel for Socceroos https://briefnews.eu/a-league-stars-world-cup-intel-for-socceroos/ https://briefnews.eu/a-league-stars-world-cup-intel-for-socceroos/#respond Thu, 07 Dec 2017 12:23:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-league-stars-world-cup-intel-for-socceroos/ KOSTA Barbarouses says the Socceroos have a great chance of beating Peru at the World Cup.

And the New Zealand international has wasted no time feeding Melbourne Victory teammates Mark Milligan and James Troisi intelligence about one of Australia’s group stages opponents for next year’s tournament.

The All Whites lost 2-0 to Peru over two legs last month in a last-ditch playoff to make it to Russia.

Now the Socceroos have been drawn alongside the South Americans.

Barbarouses said it was heartbreaking to fall short of making the World Cup, but he has been happy to channel some of that disappointment into helping Victory teammates, and Socceroos, Milligan and Troisi.

“Since the draw has come out I’ve already told them some things I noticed in playing against them. Every little bit can help,” Barbarouses said.

“I think they’ve got a great chance to get three points from that game.

“Peru try to stabilise the midfield quite a bit. It was one thing that was tough to notice on the videos that we watched coming up to play against them.

“The midfield looked ordinary on the footage we saw, but in the game it’s actually quite structured and the defensive midfielder (Renato Tapia) is quite a tidy player.

“Definitely their weakness is their two centre halves (Christian Ramos and Alberto Rodriguez). Their fullbacks are decent, but in the centre of defence, if you can get balls in behind them in the channels or even centrally I think you can hurt them.”

Ange twist in hunt for new Socceroos boss https://briefnews.eu/ange-twist-in-hunt-for-new-socceroos-boss/ https://briefnews.eu/ange-twist-in-hunt-for-new-socceroos-boss/#respond Sun, 03 Dec 2017 14:53:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ange-twist-in-hunt-for-new-socceroos-boss/ SACKED Serbian 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying coach Slavoljub Muslin has become a Socceroos coaching candidate with an incredible twist involving Ange Postecoglou.

It’s understood Muslin is in Australia.

He has been contacted by Football Federation Australia with regards to leading the Socceroos to next year’s FIFA World Cup.

After German legend Jurgen Klinsmann last week asked a close friend to make an inquiry about leading Australia to the Russian tournament via a former Socceroo, Muslin has emerged as a potential new Australia boss.

In a touch of irony, the 64-year-old Serbian recently dropped out of the race to lead Yokohama F Marinos – the club where Postecoglou is now the chief candidate according to Japanese sources.

Muslin was the club’s No.1 initial frontrunner.

Muslin was fired from the Serbian job despite leading the nation to its second World Cup appearance since 2006 after it became an independent nation.

BIG NAME: Football legend scouting Roos job

Muslin coached Serbia for 15 games from June 2016 after having jobs with clubs such as Standard Liege, Dinamo Minsk and Red Star Belgrade.

But Postecoglou still has stern competition for the club job since the J-League giant searched globally for a mentor to replace Erick Mombaerts next year.

The 62-year-old Frenchman took charge of his final J-League game last Saturday winning 1-0 away to Urawa Red Diamonds after three seasons in charge.

An unnamed Portuguese coach also in the running to win the Yokohama job.

It’s understood Yokohama have been headhunting a coach since October when officials made a decision not to renew Mombaerts’ contract.

The club had made a short list of 30 candidates before coming to the conclusion that Postecoglou was one of the best three standing.

It’s believed club officials made initial contact with Postecoglou via an internet video program.

The Yokohama gig is worth close to $ 1 million a season with club chiefs claiming they want to finalise a deal before the end of the year.

FFA has been contacted for comment.

France, Peru, Denmark await Socceroos in Russia https://briefnews.eu/france-peru-denmark-await-socceroos-in-russia/ https://briefnews.eu/france-peru-denmark-await-socceroos-in-russia/#respond Fri, 01 Dec 2017 18:07:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/france-peru-denmark-await-socceroos-in-russia/ THERE wasn’t much pot luck for the Socceroos, who have landed themselves in another tough World Cup group for Russia 2018.

Australia were drawn in Group C alongside France, Peru and Denmark.

Their first match will be against France at Kazan Arena on June 16.

Fortunately, Kazan is where the Socceroos will be based for the tournament.

But it will be a tough assignment for Australia. France boast a team of superstars and are on the rise, while Denmark are full of quality themselves.

The Socceroos will fancy themselves against Peru though, who qualified via a play off against New Zealand, but hardly offered much.

COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE: At least it’s not the group of death

The draw took place at 6pm local time on Friday evening, 2am (EDT) on Saturday.

It was a snowy evening in Moscow as officials, dignitaries and media made their way to the historic Kremlin State Palace.

Socceroos assistant coach Ante Milicic was there to represent Australia – the only country of the 32 participants without a head coach.

FFA boss David Gallop couldn’t make the long trip, with the AGM having taken place in Sydney on Thursday.

After football’s royalty walked the red carpet, including Diego Maradona, Pele, Gordon Banks and Cafu, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin made the opening address to get official proceedings under way.

There was some entertainment, but inside the Hall anticipation was building ahead of the draw.

England’s Gary Lineker was the draw host and he was assisted by Diego Maradona, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Carlos Puyol, Fabio Cannavaro, Gordon Banks and Diego Forlan.
