Alphonso Davies has been voted the Canadian men's soccer player of the year, after a standout season with the men's national team and the Vancouver Whitecaps. 

Davis, who grew up in Edmonton after being born in Ghana, was honoured by a vote shared by media and coaches.

"He has been a standout performer for club and country and that is just a consistent reality now for Alphonso Davies," John Herdman, head coach of Canada's men's team, said in a statement released by Canada Soccer. "For club, he picked up many an accolade, culminating with what looks like one of the biggest signings our country has ever seen."

Christine Sinclair was named women's top player on Tuesday.

Davies won Vancouver Whitecaps FC player of the year honours. He scored eight goals, co-led the team with 11 assists (youngest player in league history to record double digit assists) and was selected to the all-star game.

In July, his rights were transferred to Bayern Munich on an MLS-record transfer fee that could total more than $ 29-million. Davies joined the German champions in late November after he turned 18 years old.

Fernando LaFuente said he had no role in the ruse attempted by the club in Dublin, Ballybrack FC.

The club has apologised for a “gross error of judgment” after falsely reporting that Mr LaFuente had died in a traffic accident on the way home from training last week.

Ballybrack’s game against Arklow Town on Saturday was postponed, while other teams in the Leinster Senior League held a minute’s silence in honour of the amateur player.

The league also posted a notice of his death in a newspaper before it was discovered that Mr LaFuente was actually alive and well.

Mr LaFuente moved to Galway a number of months ago. He said the club had told him they might claim that he had an accident as a way of avoiding playing the game against Arklow.

He said he only learned that his death had been faked on Tuesday night. “I was aware there was going to be some story on me but I thought it was going to be me breaking a leg,” he told Ireland’s RTE news.

“I was home yesterday after my work finished. I was playing some video games. Suddenly I got a call from work and they said what’s happened. They told me, ‘you’re a celebrity’.

“They started sending me all these news articles and mass media. And that’s how I found out I was dead.” Mr LaFuente said the club has since apologised to him.

“As soon as I heard the news, I wrote to them,” he said. “They got straight back to me and told me what was going on and they apologised.

“It’s serious on their part but I’m finding it a little bit funny. Because basically, I’m not dead. And no one has actually been harmed here.” Mr LaFuente said he would have had no issue with the club falsely claiming he had broken a limb.

But he said the reports on his death had been a “bit sad”.

“A man in his 20s, with his whole life in front of him, dying in a car accident. I don’t know how I feel about that. It’s funny for me because I’ve been watching my own death,” he said.

The software engineer suggested his ex-club might have been keen to get Saturday’s game called off due to a lack of players.

In a statement, Ballybrack FC said: “At this stage we can only offer our sincere apologies to the Leinster Senior League, our opponents Arklow Town FC and the host of clubs and football people who made contact with us or offered messages of support in recent days.” The club added that “the person in question has been relieved of all footballing duties” following an emergency meeting.

Leinster Senior League chairman David Moran told RTE that the story “started to unravel” after they had inquired about offering support to the family. The league issued a statement saying that it had acted in “good faith” after being informed of the death.

A Florida woman has faced ridicule online after she was recorded calling the police on a black man while he shouted and cheered from the sidelines during his teenage son’s soccer game.

The woman, who was dubbed ‘Golfcart Gail’ in a now viral Facebook post (but whose name, we’re guessing, is probably not Gail), is seen sitting behind the wheel in a golf cart, calling the police on the father and accusing him of harassing the referee.

According to Ginger Williams, who wrote the viral post, the man had simply been shouting at his son and telling him to obey the referee’s orders. “This man was simply trying to watch his son’s soccer game and cheer for him from the sides,” Williams wrote.

But that was all a bit too much for Golfcart Gail, who Williams wrote decided to “spring into action” and approach the man to remind him that his so-called harassment would not be tolerated. Probably a bit confused, the man told the woman that he was simply speaking to his own son.

“For whatever reason, Golfcart Gail just would not let this go. She continued to harass and beleaguer this parent,” Williams explained.

Eventually, the man even offered to leave to avoid creating a bigger situation, but at that point, as he packed up his things, the woman in the golfcart decided to call the police over his “threatening” behavior.

It later turned out that the woman was a “field marshal” at the park, but a spokesman for the St. Johns County Sheriff’s office did not confirm to NBC News whether or not she had been disciplined for her outburst.

Another woman at the scene also filmed what was going on and told NBC she felt there was “no reason” to get the police involved and said she started to film when the woman in the golfcart “would not leave the father alone”.

The disturbance even caused the game to be delayed at one point. “Shame on you Golfcart Gail for what you did to this man and to the children who had to see this,” Williams wrote in her Facebook post.

Recently a number videos have appeared online showing white people calling the police on black people for what seems to be no real reason. In May, a white student called the police on a black student while she was taking a nap in the common room of her dorm. In another peculiar incident, a white woman called the police on a black family who were having a barbecue — and in June, a woman was nicknamed ‘Permit Patty’ after calling the police on a black girl selling bottles of water outside her house.

More recently, a white woman in St. Louis was fired after a video emerged online of her attempting to block a black man from entering his own apartment complex, though she claims she was not being racist and simply suspected he might not actually live there, since she didn’t see him using a key fob to enter the building.

Dish and Univision haven’t been on the friendliest of terms for quite a while now, and we doubt this development will help bridge the widening gap between the two companies. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Univision has failed to convince a judge to toss the lawsuit Dish filed over content it streamed on Facebook. The direct-broadcast satellite provider accused Univision of violating their licensing deal by streaming Liga MX matches — Mexico’s top level soccer league — on the world’s biggest social network while it’s broadcasting the games on TV at the same time.

Dish said Univision is undercutting their agreement with the practice, since the only difference between the two is the language: Univision’s Facebook streams are in English, while Dish broadcasts are in Spanish. In their motion to dismiss, Univision’s lawyers wrote that the licensing deal only covers “Spanish-language Linear Services, including Liga MX Matches in the Spanish Language.” The company’s livestreams, they noted, aren’t only in English, but also use different announcers and feature commentary different from the Spanish-language version.

Dish argued that the deal it signed is for “all of the Linear Services regardless of language.” The judge clearly agreed, and Univision now has to face the lawsuit, so it’ll probably take some time for the companies to make peace with each other.

FIFA, the world governing body in soccer, has announced a shortlist of 10 candidates for The Best FIFA Men’s Player for 2018 just weeks after the conclusion of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The winner of the award, which attempts to recognise the “extraordinary achievements” of soccer players over the past season, will be announced at a ceremony in London on September 24.

The winner will be decided by the following four groups, with equal weighting (25%) given to each:

  1. The captains of all national teams
  2. The head coaches of all national teams
  3. A fan ballot that the public can participate in
  4. A group of approximately 200 members of the international media

In no particular order, here are the 10 soccer players in with a chance of winning this year’s award.

Antoine Griezmann — Atlético Madrid and France national team forward.

Antoine Griezmann has been instrumental to the success of his club and his country so far in 2018. He scored twice in Atlético’s 3-0 win over Olympique Marseille in the Europa League final in May, and once in France’s 4-2 victory over Croatia in the World Cup final in July.

Titles won in 2018: UEFA Europa League winner with Atlético and FIFA World Cup winner with France. FIFA World Cup Bronze Ball (third best player) and FIFA World Cup Silver Boot (second top scorer).

Hazard continued to grind away at Chelsea FC in the 2017-2018 season, but it was at the 2018 FIFA World Cup where he really came alive. Hazard was a nuisance from the first game to the last, and was truly deserving of the Silver Ball award.

Titles won in 2018: FIFA World Cup third place with Belgium. Hazard also won the 2018 FIFA World Cup Silver Ball (second best player) and was the joint top assist provider at the tournament in Russia.
