Mind you, Season 28 was already plenty dramatic, even before a single second of the show aired: First, the casting of ex-White House press secretary Sean Spicer prompted backlash on social media, even from DWTS co-host Tom Bergeron. (For his part, Spicer expressed hope that the ballroom would be a “politics-free zone,” which, sure!)
Then, just hours before Monday’s premiere, contestant Christie Brinkley had to drop out after an injury, and daughter Sailor Brinkley-Cook stepped in to take her place for the season. All that, and Len Goodman hadn’t even criticized anyone yet.
But the two-hour broadcast delivered its own share of plot twists, including the reveal of this season’s celebrity/pro pairings and some insight on those “format tweaks” that ABC entertainment president Karey Burke previously teased. (Well, sorta. Bergeron hinted that the judges will get a say in this season’s eliminations… but he won’t give any more details until next Monday’s show. Rude.)
Let’s revisit how each of the duos fared on Night 1:
* Hannah Brown and pro Alan Bersten (Cha-Cha) — Hannah is actually my pick to win it all, so I was pleased to see her deliver a solid performance on Monday. She was a little wobbly at times, and her Night 1 nerves pushed her a tiiiny bit ahead of the music — but she’s got natural grace, stage presence and a ton of potential. Judges’ Score: 20/30
* Kel Mitchell and pro Witney Carson (Tango) — Anyone familiar with Kel’s comedy work knows he’s a ball of energy… but this tango actually seemed to lose its fun and passion as it went on, despite a strong start. Judges’ Score: 16/30
* Kate Flannery and new pro Pasha Pashkov (Cha-Cha) — The dancing in this routine was neither extraordinary nor terrible; it was just sort of… there, you know? That said, who knew Kate had a serious set of pipes on her? Judges’ Score: 15/30
* Lamar Odom and pro Peta Murgatroyd (Foxtrot) — Oof. This was… not great. And I think the routine may have actually suffered from having too few steps? It doesn’t seem that Lamar is destined for the Mirrorball anyway, but he wasn’t given much to do here other than lazily guide Peta from step to step. Also, I legitimately can’t remember the last time — if ever? — that someone got a “3” from a judge. I repeat: Oof. Judges’ Score: 11/30
* Lauren Alaina and pro Gleb Savchenko (Cha-Cha) — There was some debate among the judges about Gleb’s choreography, and whether this routine contained enough traditional cha-cha content. (I bet you can guess which judge wasn’t impressed.) Regardless, Lauren’s movements were sharp, and she brought just the right amount of sass to her performance… even though I’m unconvinced that “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” is a suitable cha-cha soundtrack. Judges’ Score: 19/30
* Christie Brinkley Sailor Brinkley-Cook and pro Val Chmerkovskiy (Foxtrot) — Dude! She only had three days to learn this! And it was good! I was expecting Val to essentially drag Sailor through this number, but she held her own — with the proper foxtrot frame, no less. Judges’ Score: 18/30
* Karamo Brown and pro Jenna Johnson (Salsa) — Len, Bruno and Carrie Ann had some issues with Karamo’s hip action — the lack of it, that is. But the Queer Eye personality still brought tons of energy, and his firm grasp on the choreography bodes well for the rest of the season. Judges’ Score: 17/30
* Ray Lewis and pro Cheryl Burke (Salsa) — I was not expecting Ray Lewis to be so good at body rolls. But lo and behold: Ray Lewis is good at body rolls. Judges’ Score: 15/30
* Mary Wilson and pro Brandon Armstrong (Foxtrot) — It could have just been the soundtrack — “Baby Love” by The Supremes, the group Mary sang in for years — but she looked much more at ease on that dance floor than I had anticipated. I worry that faster routines will trip her up in the weeks ahead — but for now, let’s just focus on those fabulous high kicks she pulled off halfway through the number. Judges’ Score: 17/30
* Ally Brooke and pro Sasha Farber (Cha-Cha) — This number started with an impressive solo section for Ally, who was bold and confident from the moment the music began. Once the actual cha-cha started, though, she seemed to be overthinking her movements, and the execution got a bit clumsy. Still, she’s clearly a contender. Judges’ Score: 16/30
* Sean Spicer and pro Lindsay Arnold (Salsa) — I had expected Sean’s first performance to be pretty weak. (And, well, it was.) I had not expected that fluorescent green shirt… but now I’ll never forget it. Judges’ Score: 12/30
* James Van Der Beek and pro Emma Slater (Tango) — Y’all, we may have a Season 28 winner on our hands. James’ performance was strong, sexy and well-executed on a technical level. The only disappointment? That the actor’s previous “appearance” on Dancing With the Stars — via an episode of Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23 — went unmentioned, even though that show aired on ABC. Odd! Judges’ Score: 21/30
With that, I hand it over to you. Who impressed you during the premiere? And who deserves to be the first dancer sent packing? Hit the comments with your thoughts!

The US Securities and Exchange Commission has temporarily suspended trading of securities of The Crypto Company, a California-based firm whose shares have skyrocketed more than 17,000% since it first began trading in September.
The suspension, which lasts until January 3, is due to “concerns regarding the accuracy and adequacy of information in the marketplace about, among other things, the compensation paid for promotion of the company, and statements in Commission filings about the plans of the company’s insiders to sell their shares of The Crypto Company’s common stock,” the agency said in a press release.
“Questions have also arisen concerning potentially manipulative transactions in the company’s stock in November 2017.”
The company has pushed back against the SEC’s allegations.
“We are fully reporting and get halted,” CEO Mike Poutre told Business Insider Tuesday morning. “SEC is sending the wrong message. We are working with counsel and will handle things appropriately.”
The Crypto Company brought in $ 487,692 of revenue in the third of quarter of 2017, it said in a November press release. Coupled with operating expenses of $ 1.68 million, the company reported a net loss of $ 1.51 million, or $ 0.08 per share.
Shares of the company — which trade on the over-the-counter market — began trading on September 27 at a price of $ 3.30 per share. By December 11, they had exploded to $ 642 per share, according to data from Bloomberg. The company announced a 10-for-1 stock split after the rise.
The Crypto Company touts itself as “one of the first publicly traded technology companies in the digital currencies and blockchain sector, offers a portfolio of digital assets, technologies, and consulting services to the blockchain and cryptocurrency markets.”

Tesla has only produced 47,100 cars so far in 2017. Many investors are betting on the future of electric cars and Elon Musk’s vision rather than Tesla’s actual car making abilities. The mass market Model 3 is due out any day now, and will ramp up overall production with 20,000 cars per month by December. It still won’t come close to touching any of the production numbers of the big 3.
Tesla isn’t the one with fingers in the electric car pot either. Volvo announced on July 5 that all of its new cars would be fully electric or hybrid by 2019, and the electric mass market, electric Chevy Bolt will directly compete with the Model 3.

The cable industry’s top lobbying group has consistently claimed that the US’ current net neutrality rules harm network investment and raise costs for consumers.
Yet that same group is now bragging about dramatic increases in broadband speeds and claiming that broadband prices are going down.
The NCTA—The Internet & Television Association—touted Akamai’s latest State of the Internet Report this month in a post titled, “America’s Internet speeds continue to soar.”

Venezuela’s homicide rate rose to an average of about 60 a day last year, up from about 45 a day in 2015, the attorney general’s office said on Friday, as a deep economic and political crisis has exacerbated violence in the country.
Official data put the murder rate at 70.1 per 100,000 inhabitants last year, one of the highest in the world and up from 58 in 2015.
Attorney General Luisa Ortega Diaz said that Venezuela saw 21,752 homicides in 2016.
For those killings, 13,334 people had been accused, and 5,796 had been formally charged. There had also been 3,350 apprehension requests, 2,121 of which were carried out, according to El Universal.
Data from the Venezuelan Violence Observatory reported 28,479 “violent deaths” in 2016, which would be a homicide rate of 91.8 per 100,000 people, though the OVV’s figures include cases of killings where the government said the victims were “resisting authority” or in which the motive for the killing was not clear.
Excluding those two categories brings the homicide rate down to 59 per 100,000 people.
In the past, Venezuela has not published official crime data, particularly over the last several years, which has made tracking violence in the country difficult.

In the absence of government homicide data, other groups have made estimates, though the methodology in those cases is thought to led to inflated homicide numbers, particularly in the case of the capital, Caracas, which is one of the most violent cities in the world.
Numerous state security plans and disarmament drives in recent years have failed to curb violence, given easy access to weapons, police participation in crime, and high levels of impunity in the nation of 30 million people, where there is a 92% impunity rate for homicides.
Violent crime is one of the most pervasive anxieties for Venezuelans, especially in poor slums dominated by gangs and rife with guns.

There is a longstanding belief among Venezuelans that strong anti-crime measures are the only effective way to address lawbreaking.
But public ire with the government and security services has grown, especially with Operation Liberation and Protection of the People (OLP), which saw heavily armed security forces deployed to high-crime areas, often in poor neighborhoods in Caracas and elsewhere.
The operation also inspired a number of accusations of authorities committing extrajudicial killings or working with death squads.
As a part of OLP operations, more than 14,000 Venezuelans were temporarily detained between July 2015 and January 2016 to “verify” if they were wanted in relation to any crimes. Fewer than 100 of those people were ultimately charged.
Civilian groups — both those working at the behest of the government and other groups formed for citizen self-defense — have added to the fray, and a number of them are suspected of their own involvement with criminal activity.
Government-established “peace zones,” meant to bring down violence, have instead become hubs for organized crime and related violence. Miranda also had the highest concentration of peace zones last year.

In 2016, 414 security-force members were killed in Venezuela — 291 police, 93 military, and 30 body guards, the latter of whom have become more prevalent with rising violence. (So far this year, 38 security-forces members have been slain.)
The primary motive in the killing of security personnel last year was to recover their service weapons, and most of the killings took place in Miranda state, which borders the capital, Caracas, to the east and stretches along the coast. Miranda also had the highest concentration of peace zones last year.
Amid Venezuela’s 2016 carnage were the killings of 254 minors, 43.5% more than the 177 reportedly killed in 2015. Of the 2016 total, 162 were killed in confrontations with police and another 21 slain in OLP operations.
According to a UNICEF report published in late 2014, homicide is the leading cause of death among young people in Venezuela. That report found that for adolescents from 10 to 19 years of age, the homicide rate is 39 per 100,000; for males in that age range, the rate was 74 per 100,000, while it was 3 per 100,000 for females in that age group.

A brutal economic recession that has millions skipping meals has pushed more Venezuelans toward crime, according to officials, rights groups, and neighborhood organizations. Vigilante killings have become more common as well.
Official records obtained by Insight Crime showed that there were 65 lynchings through September last year, while just 10 were recorded in 2015. In a number of other cases last year, police intervened before such lynchings could take place.

Such public retaliatory actions are widely popular, with nearly two-thirds of Venezuelans approving of them as a means of justice. Police who stop them are often looked down upon.
There is a 98% impunity rate for lynchings, according to attorney general’s office figures cited by Insight Crime.
Venezuela’s deteriorating economic situation, fractious political conflict, and spiraling violence have feed an outflux of people.
Waves of Venezuelans have left the country over the last 20 years, and their resettlement elsewhere has often facilitated the departure of more of their countrymen.
An expert in the country calculated at the end of 2015 that about 5% of Venezuela’s roughly 30 million people had already left.
A Datin Corp poll conducted in September this year found that 57% of registered voters, some 12 million people, wanted to leave the country, among them many people who said they admired late President Hugo Chavez.
In 1992, there were 50,000 Venezuelans living abroad, but that number has risen to 2.5 million, 8.3% of the country’s population, according to Ivan de la Vega, director of the International Migration Laboratory.
Reuters/Carlos Garcia Rawlins
Countries in the region, like Chile and Colombia, have drawn large numbers of Venezuelans, and Peru recently announced it would allow thousands of Venezuelans to live and work there.
The US is also a major destination for those leaving Venezuela. Doral, a neighborhood in Miami, has been nicknamed “Doralzuela” because of the influx.
There are varying estimates for the number of Venezuelans living abroad, some putting the figure at or slightly above a million. But violence appears to be a common factor. A 2013 survey found that 68% of Venezuelans considered insecurity the primary reason for the exodus, up from 58% three years before.
“Those that have gone for this reason were directly victims of robbery or kidnapping or they lost a close family member in violent circumstances,” De la Vega told El Nacional.

How’s this for a major TV plot twist: Dancing With the Stars‘ Season 24 premiere was so strong, not even Simone Biles seems like a lock for the Mirrorball anymore. (Gasp!)
ABC’s reality competition staple returned on Monday night, and although the two-hour debut featured a handful of duds (A for effort, Mr. T!), a staggering number of this season’s 12 couples showcased enough ballroom potential to land in the finale two months from now.
Normani Kordei? Handled a breakneck quickstep like it was nothing. Nick Viall? Much better at learning choreography than he is at finding love on TV. Charo? Slightly insane, but a performance powerhouse nonetheless.
Before you tell us who got your attention on Monday night, let’s break down a few of the evening’s highlights.
BEST OF THE NIGHT
Simone Biles and pro Sasha Farber (Tango) — Although she was given a run for her money during the premiere (particularly by football player Rashad Jennings), Biles still brought the evening’s strongest performance — a masterful combination of elegance, strength and sensuality. By no means is she a shoe-in for the Season 24 championship; in Monday’s premiere alone, at least five other couples proved they’re worthy competitors for the title. But Biles reinforced with this tango that she has the agility, power and innate understanding of choreography that she’ll need to go the distance. Judges’ Score: 32/40
MOST PLEASANT SURPRISE
David Ross and pro Lindsay Arnold (Quickstep) — Well, don’t I feel silly. Although my Season 24 odds gallery predicted that Ross was a lock for early elimination, it seems the former MLB catcher will be around much longer than I gave him credit for, after turning in a quickstep that was highly energetic and massively fun to watch. Given that he’s paired with Arnold, who has a knack for transforming athletes into ballroom pros, Ross may just be one to watch. Judges’ Score: 28/40
MOST DISAPPOINTING
Bonner Bolton and pro Sharna Burgess (Cha-Cha) — To be clear, Bolton and Burgess probably have the most natural, intense chemistry of any Season 24 pair. (I can’t be the only one who thought they kissed at the end of their routine, right?) But I expected the professional bull rider to be a bit more athletic, and perhaps even graceful, in his movements; instead, he spent much of the routine trying to keep up with his partner, even when the choreography was more honky-tonk than Latin ballroom. Judges’ Score: 22/40
WORST OF THE NIGHT
Chris Kattan and pro Witney Carson (Cha-Cha) — I would have bet good money that Kattan would dance a Night at the Roxbury-themed routine at some point this season — and the producers were wise to make that happen in Week One, given that Kattan doesn’t seem long for this competition. But perhaps even more awkward than the comedian’s choppy movements on the dance floor was his brutal post-performance interview with Erin Andrews. Relax, dude! The audience has nothing against you! Judges’ Score: 17/40
With that, I turn it over to you. Who impressed you the most — or failed to impress you at all — during Dancing‘s season premiere? Tell us in the comments!
]]>When Kellyanne Conway went before NBC’s Meet the Press and described statements made by Press Secretary Sean Spicer as “alternative facts”, it had the unintended consequence of driving up sales of George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984. Since President Donald Trump has been sworn in as the 45th president of the United States, another dystopian novel has begun climbing the charts: Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale.
Speaking to NPR’s Petra Mayer earlier this week, Atwood’s publicist noted that the book has been “selling strongly for months,” and that sales rose 60 percent in the last year, while “since the election, it’s been 200 percent increase in sales.” The book’s publisher has printed 125,000 copies of the novel so far this year, and the book is presently sitting at the 10th position on Amazon’s Best Seller in Books list. George Orwell’s 1984 remains a strong seller, and is currently number six on the list.
Atwood’s novel has become an increasingly relevant read in recent years, about the rise of a totalitarian theocracy that strips away the rights of women in the near future. Atwood first released the novel in 1985 after becoming concerned with the political rhetoric at the time. Hulu will release its adaptation of the novel on April 26th.
Atwood told Reuters that the novel’s premise was viewed as farfetched when it was first released, but that when she wrote it, she made “sure I wasn’t putting anything into it that human beings had not already done somewhere at sometime,” and said on NPR that “At this moment in U.S. history, quite a few people are worried that it’s going that way.”
