The UK has lifted a ban on fracking, aiming to cut its reliance on energy imports as power bills soar.

"In light of Putin's illegal invasion of Ukraine and weaponization of energy, strengthening our energy security is an absolute priority," UK Business and Energy Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg said in a statement on Thursday.

The UK is in a cost-of-living crisis: Annual energy bills in the country are expected to surge 80% year-on-year to an average of £3,549, or $ 5,656, from October, the country's energy regulator said in August. 

The UK is also aiming to be a net energy exporter by 2040. It's now a net importer of all main fuel types.

The UK temporarily banned fracking in 2019 due to concerns about earth tremors from the process, which breaks up rocks with water at chemicals at high pressure in order to extract shale gas. Fracking is controversial due to its impact on the environment and fears that the process may cause earthquakes. The British Geological Survey said in a Thursday report it was challenging to "predict the occurrence of larger earthquakes during hydraulic fracturing operations."

Fracking companies welcomed the lifting of the ban, but some experts raise doubts over the impact of the move on UK consumers and the size of their energy bills.

A Thursday report from the London School of Economics said it's a "false assumption" that shale gas produced at home would be priced significantly below international market prices.

It also takes time to develop an industry substantial enough to make an impact.

"Even if the risks proved to be manageable and acceptable, shale gas would only make a significant impact to UK supply if, over the next decade, thousands of successful wells were to be drilled at hundreds of sites across northern England," Professor Andrew Aplin at Durham University's earth sciences department said in a statement on Thursday.

Update: This week, Ars staffers from across the country gather together in real life for our annual meeting, Technicon. We’re supposed to be talking more than typing, so we’re resurfacing a few classic Ars stories just in case the front page gets lonely. The last three flightworthy WB-57 airplanes in existence arrayed themselves on a runway near Johnson Space Center in Houston this past week, as if they were dinosaurs brought to life. The long-winged aircraft look something like prehistoric creatures, too, measuring just a stubby 21 meters long compared to an overly broad 37.5-meter wingspan. It had been four decades since as many as three of the great, superannuated birds soared together.

But then they did. One by one, the WB-57s slowly rolled down the runway at Ellington Airport and then began a slow climb upward into resplendent clear, blue skies. They flew again, thanks to a restoration program by NASA to bring a third WB-57 back from its boneyard. “It’s quite a day,” Charlie Mallini, who manages the WB-57 program for NASA, told Ars.

Despite the Western Coalition declaring victory over Islamic State in Iraq last year, the militants’ activity is surging. More Iraqis are kidnapped every month, as state media stays silent, a government security adviser told RT.

The Western Coalition declared Iraq “completely liberated” from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in December, but the militants’ activities didn’t cease – in fact, they are surging, with more Iraqis getting abducted and murdered by terrorists, Hisham al-Hashimi said.

The number of Iraqis kidnapped by IS doubled since May, but the state media is staying silent. Al-Hashimi explained to RT that by doing so, the government hopes to not “spread panic and hinder the rescue efforts.”

IS militants don’t seem to be leaving anytime soon, as they continue menacing locals with hit-and-run attacks and assassinations. The government is struggling to weed out the jihadists, who are hiding in remote mountainous areas.

“The special forces don’t have enough resources to hunt the militants down,” al-Hashimi said.

As a forced laborer escaping from an island, first-person platformer The Free Ones has you swinging all over the place with your trusty hookshot.

While the game attempts to create an interesting narrative out of your predicament, the main draw of The Free Ones is its wide open spaces and physics-defying movement. Your hookshot attaches to all wooden surfaces, allowing you to quickly traverse large distances.

Maneuvering around these areas might not be scientifically accurate, but it feels good. The game doesn’t restrict your movement too much by tying your running to a stamina bar or the need to watch out for fall damage or somesuch. It is all about motion and momentum, moving ever forward and clearing obstacles that might seem insurmountable at first glance.

When outside, the level design accomodates for that by offering you beautiful vistas and interesting places. Underground areas are less impressive, but it is still nice to figure out the way forward and pull of those increasingly difficult jumping puzzles.

Airport car parking pick-up fees increased at over half UK major airports

Shock new research has found that over half of the UK’s biggest airports have increased the fees for drivers picking up friends or family members.

Analysis of parking prices by the RAC found that 13 airports had hiked up the pick-up parking prices this year.

The largest price rise came from London Luton.

It now costs a whopping initial £8 for a stay of up to 30 minutes at London Luton, which is £1 more than in 2017 when the minimum permitted stay was longer at 40 minutes.

Coming in as the second most expensive was London Stansted with motorists expected to pay £5.50 for a stay of up to half an hour, closely followed by Birmingham where it costs £5.10 for up to one hour – increases of 50p and 20p respectively.

Four airports, Edinburgh, Manchester, Heathrow, and Gatwick, share the fourth spot all costing £4 for pick-up charges.

Of the four, however, Edinburgh is the priciest in real terms, giving drivers just 15 minutes for their four quid as opposed to Heathrow and Gatwick which allows a 30 minute stop.

The airport that increased the price of their parking by the biggest percentage was Southampton doubling the initial fee from £1 to £2, however, it increased the amount of time the driver can stay for from 10 minutes to 15 minutes.

Glasgow also increased their prices by 50 per cent from £2 to £3 but doubled the amount of time the driver can stay for 20 minutes.

Motorists heading for Belfast, Liverpool John Lennon, and Leeds Bradford airports will find these are the only three major airports in the UK that still permit free short-stay pick-ups – although in Northern Ireland drivers will need to be very quick at picking up as the free period only lasts 10 minutes.

Prices at drop-off didn’t increase at as many airports as pick-up points but it is still extortionate.

London Stansted has the most expensive initial charge for stopping off at £3.50 for a stay of up to 10 minutes.

The most expensive place to park on an equivalent ‘per minute’ basis goes to Manchester which introduced charges for the first time in 2018, having previously operated a free drop-off zone outside the airport.

These airports are followed by London Luton (£3 for 10 minutes), Liverpool John Lennon (£3 for 20 minutes) and Leeds Bradford (£3 for 30 minutes) when ranked by price.

Southampton is the only airport to increase its standard fees, doing so by £1 but giving drivers an extra five minutes parking from the previous 10 minutes.

Four of the UK’s biggest airports meanwhile still allow drivers to drop off passengers free-of-charge outside their terminals – they are London Heathrow, Gatwick, City, and Cardiff.

Drivers need to be wary of the extortionate charges of overstaying in a drop-off one.

Leeds Bradford charges £9 for stops of between 30 and 60 minutes, while those overstaying at London Luton, London Stansted and East Midlands are effectively put on a meter after the maximum stay is exceeded – each charge a whopping £1 for every additional minute.

RAC spokesperson Rod Dennis said: “As we enter the summer holiday season, the UK’s airports are about to see some of their busiest weeks of the year.

“With thousands of motorists driving to airports to pick up and drop off friends and family members many will, unfortunately, find themselves shocked by some of the extortionate parking tariffs operated by some airports.

“Our advice is to check parking fees and time limits well before setting out for an airport this summer so as to avoid a nasty shock.

“Drivers should also be aware of just how high some charges can be if they inadvertently stay longer picking up or dropping off than they originally meant to.

“We advise doing some research before heading to the airport and seeing if there are any cheaper parking options available; some airports offer more affordable spaces further from the terminal building, and some better rates for reserving a space online.

“If picking up, it is wise to make sure you know when a friend or a family member is landing and leave additional time for them to pick up their luggage.

“We also strongly urge drivers who are researching longer stay airport parking to only book through reliable parking providers – such as through an official airport website or a parking provider that is a member of the Independent Airport Parking Association (IAPA).”

RAC top five tips to avoid stress and high airport parking charges

1. Do your research: Check out the parking pages on the airport’s website to understand fees, payment options and stay times. Some airports may even offer lower online rates.

2. Have your payment ready: Once you have found out how to pay, ensure you have payment ready to hand whether that is adequate change, a debit or credit card or pre-programme the phone payment number into your mobile.

3. Identify a nearby ‘holding location’: It is worth checking out nearby free parking places in case your friends or relatives’ flight is delayed so you can wait for the plane to land before proceeding to the terminal. If picking up, make sure you keep abreast of the flight’s landing time.

4. Keep in touch: Ask your friends or relatives to call you once they have collected their luggage and cleared passport control so you can park at the optimum moment. But remember if you are driving – it must be hands-free.

5. Say your goodbyes before travel: Say your farewells with your passengers before you get to the airport to keep goodbyes to a minimum, otherwise they may prove expensive.

Israeli police shot and detained a Palestinian suspected of stabbing and severely injuring a young Jewish woman in the northern town of Afula. Police didn’t rule out a terror-related motive as Israeli-Palestinian tensions peak.

The victim, identified as Shuva Malka, was stabbed in the street outside of a local coffee shop before noon on Monday. Following the attack, she managed to escape to the café and call for help.

“There was an 18-year-old girl sitting on a chair at the entrance to a store. She was conscious and suffering from multiple stab wounds to the upper body,” a paramedic who was at the scene told the Times of Israel. The woman was then hospitalized in what various Israeli media described as “serious” or “critical” condition. Her condition subsequently “stabilized” but remains “serious,” the Times of Israel reports, citing the hospital officials.

The police who arrived at the scene shortly following the incident arrested an alleged attacker following a brief manhunt. The suspect attempted to flee the scene, but was shot in the leg by the police after he “refused to stop,” the Israeli media said. The detention was confirmed by a police spokesman, Micky Rosenfeld, on Twitter. A police spokesperson told the Times a knife was recovered from the suspect.

The man was subsequently identified as a resident of the Palestinian town of Jenin, located in the occupied West Bank, not far from the border with Israel. Police said they are still investigating the motive of the suspected attacker, adding that they have not ruled out the possibility that it was terror-related or carried out for “nationalist” reasons. According to some reports, the man had no right to enter the Israeli territory.

Waves of street attacks carried out by Palestinians occasionally hit Israel and the occupied West Bank. Tel Aviv blames Palestinian leadership for inciting the violence. The Palestinian Authority in the West Bank denies the accusations.

The latest attack comes amid the ongoing Israeli Defense Forces’ (IDF) violent crackdown on the months-long protests along the Gaza border, dubbed the Great March of Return by Palestinians, which were started to mark 70 years since thousands of Palestinian Arabs fled or were chased off their land to make way for the newly-established Israel. More than 120 Palestinian protesters have been killed by the Israeli forces so far.
