A dashboard camera caught a Utah Highway Patrol officer go airborne after he was struck from behind by a sliding vehicle on a snowy highway.

Sergeant Cade Brenchley was responding to multiple “slide-offs” in Sardine Canyon on Sunday, according to police, when he was struck by an out of control car that veered off the snow-covered highway.

The distressing footage shows Brenchley as he makes his way to help a vehicle that slid off the road, when an out-of-control second car strikes him from behind. The impact of the crash (at about 1:15 in the video below) sent the officer flying in the air before he came crashing down on the vehicle he was walking towards.

Brenchley was transported to Logan Regional Hospital, where he was treated for broken ribs and a broken scapula.

“It’s miraculous, though, that this is all I have, considering what we saw [on the video],” Brenchley said during a news conference at the hospital, where he is still recovering.

“When I watched the video, I had no idea that it was that hard,” he said. “And yeah, I flew.”

The Utah Department of Public Safety released the footage on Tuesday as a warning to drivers to “slow down and move over” when driving in treacherous weather. The driver of the vehicle, a college-aged woman, has apologized and visited Brenchley at the hospital, who said she’s “not to be vilified.”

“She did make a mistake, and I think she’s learned from it,” he said.

  • European countries have been gripped with extremely cold weather this week.
  • The cause is a blast of frigid air from the northeast.
  • It is part of a wider phenomenon linked to weather in the Arctic, which is weirdly warm this year.
  • The warmth around the North Pole has allowed Arctic air to surge south, causing freezing temperatures and snow as far south as Rome.

Europe is in the grip of a cold snap, which has sent temperatures plunging below their usual late-February levels, and sparked heavy snow showers in unusually southerly spots like Rome.

The frigid temperatures, according to weather scientists, are actually the result of unseasonably warm weather elsewhere, which helped set the conditions for Europe’s cold.

The test flight of Russia’s new Tu-160 strategic bomber was caught on camera near Kazan. The war machine is seen darting through a milk-white snowy sky over the Russian city, flying as low as 300 meters.

The short clip of the bomber’s flyby was published online by a news website. The flight was part of the trials of the aircraft, which lasted for about seven minutes and was witnessed by a delegation of senior Russian officials, headed by the president.

The plane was unveiled in November 2017 and will join a fleet of 16 aircraft of the same nuclear-capable design in the Russian armed forces before year’s end.

A video of Russian Post packages, piled on a snowy airfield and being scattered by a plane’s jet stream, has emerged online, adding to the Post’s notoriety for outrageously mishandling packages.

A large heap of mail, apparently just unloaded from a plane, can be seen at a snow-covered local airport in Kamchatka. A jet then starts moving nearby with its engines kicking into gear, scattering the packages in all directions and landing in the snow. While workers are heard swearing, a man’s voice behind the camera comments: “That’s the Russian Post.”

“Your parcel is already flying to you,” people commented online. “They should have opened the doors of the postal van, then the packages would have flown right into it,” other social media user quipped.

“Why are you complaining, they’ll just kick it back into a pile in a moment,” another comment read – which they just might do.

The Russian Post doesn’t exactly boast a stellar record for delivering packages safely and on time, with a slew of online videos documenting the post workers’ negligence.

A video showing packages being thrown from a moving train onto a snow-covered platform, without even stopping at the station, gives credence to the claims of Russian Post being negligent.  Whether the operator was running late or just couldn’t care less, remains unclear.

Russian Post released a statement following the Kamchatka airfield incident, saying all the packages had been collected undamaged, according to Russian media. The Post blamed the incident on airport workers and the pilot, who it said launched the plane before making sure all cargo was removed from the field.

Britain is braced for a seriously cold snap over the coming days, with snow expected in many parts of the country.

Plunging temperatures and colder air can lead to icy conditions on roads and railways.

Homeowners may also have to face treacherous paths to their own front door thanks to slippery ice underfoot.

But there are things that can be done to quickly get rid of, and even prevent, ice.

How to de-ice your driveway

Rock Salt

This is the most commonly used method to de-ice a driveway and has the benefit of being cheap and easily available.

Over two millions tonnes of salt are spread onto UK roads each year, according to Compass Minerals, and this doesn’t include the millions more used on driveways.

But there are drawbacks to using salt, as is contains cyanide and chloride which are harmful to pets and plants.

Heat Mats

A high tech solution that can be installed in to the ground if you are replacing your driveway or building a new house.

But they are very expensive – around £84 for 1.5m plus installation.

Sand

Using sand or gravel can make icy surfaces less dangerous to walk on because they create traction, so you are less likely to slip.

But they can also create a mess and clog drains once ice has thawed.

Environmentally Friendly

All-natural ‘green’ products have come onto the market in recent years, but results are mixed.

One type, calcium magnesium acetate, is biodegradable but on de-ices when air temperature is -3ºC or warmer, making it useless on bitterly cold nights.

Shovel

Preventing snow from building up will help prevent ice. The only way to do this effectively is to get out the shovel.

Shovelling snow as soon as it starts to hit the ground will be most effective.

Starting the trip with a brief 360° ride on a dog sled, Bucko quickly decides it’s time to trade the dog power for horsepower and trades the huskies for a Raptor. Right off the bat, he mentions the dreaded change from a V8 to a V6, something that frightened more than a handful of truck lovers. Luckily, as far as our host is concerned, it’s not actually a downgrade. The new Raptor actually ends up squeezing out more power and more torque with the V6, so all is not lost. After spending some time on the road riding solo, Bucko then gets some seat time with a pro driver on a track.

During the track experience there just so happened to be a Focus RS around, and you know what that means… we had to get some icy track time with that little beast as well. We know that it will have many design cues from the FT-1 concept, and fans have even come up with some plausible renderings. Something of which we haven’t seen much, or rather heard, is the sound the Supra makes. That all changes with this new winter spy footage of the Supra.

The video shows the Supra out for cold weather and snow testing in camouflage similar to the last time we saw it. We see the testers having a bit of slow, sideways action, and as a result, we get a pretty clear idea of the car’s exhaust note. Pleasingly, it’s rather snarly, even at the relatively slow speeds and modest throttle inputs.

Unfortunately, the video doesn’t reveal much else about the vehicle. We still expect the Supra to launch with a twin-turbocharged six-cylinder, which could have an inline layout or a “V” configuration, despite the testers not driving hard enough for us to hear any blow-off valves or general turbo hiss. We also don’t know if the engine will be a joint development between Toyota and BMW, or if each version will use an engine from its respective automaker. Regardless, this video has us even more excited for the production model.
