Even Airbnb can’t resist the urge to copy Snapchat, it seems. The home rental outfit is quietly beta testing a Stories feature in its iPhone app that (surprise!) lets you document your trips with photos and short videos. You can view the resulting productions both on your phone and the web, and they appear to automatically link to places in the stories along with the related accommodations. Clearly, Airbnb sees this as a marketing tool — you might be more likely to book a rental if you see examples of what people did during their stays. It doesn’t hurt that this could get you to use the app beyond scheduling your own trips.

We’ve asked Airbnb for comment on the beta test. As our TechCrunch colleagues point out, though, the most pressing questions might surround Airbnb’s policies. Will it keep Stories if they’re highly critical or include risqué content? Are your productions locked into Airbnb, or is there a way to share them with platforms like Snapchat or Instagram? While the service is no stranger to grappling with offensive behavior, it’s not used to social networking elements like this — a beta test may be crucial to fine-tuning its policies.

This isn’t likely to be Airbnb’s only big bet in the near future. TechCrunch noted that Airbnb is prepping a loyalty program that would reward frequent travelers. It’s not certain just how this would function, but it’s possible that you’ll earn points toward future stays. You’d have an incentive to use Airbnb beyond any up front savings over a conventional hotel, and might be tempted to upgrade to a posh location if you get a steep-enough discount.

If you’ve recently encountered an ad on Snapchat you can’t skip, it’s not due to any bug or problem with the app. The company has merely started testing six-second TV commercial-like ads, confirming a previous report about their rollout this month. According to AdAge, some of the ephemeral app’s first unskippable ads include promos for Deadpool 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S9. They don’t show you how much time you have left to watch until you tap on the screen to skip it and — surprise! — find out that you can’t.

The good news is that these ads won’t pop up in your friends’ posts — they’ll only appear in professionally produced Shows in Snapchat’s Discover section by publishing partners like Disney, NBC and MTV-owner Viacom. Snapchat is testing these forced-view ads, because advertisers are reportedly unhappy that the average ad viewing time on the platform is only two seconds. “They can’t build a viable ad-supported platform without changing,” a digital agency exec told AdAge.

While you can’t instantly dismiss the experimental ads like you could the other ones on the platform, they’re also less robust in a way. Those six seconds are all you get, since they don’t link to longer videos or e-commerce experiences. At least the initial batch doesn’t — future ones may find a way to be unskippable and interactive at the same time.

On Thursday, Snapchat’s parent company Snap Inc. introduced the second-generation version of its camera glasses, called Spectacles.

I actually tried the first-generation Snapchat Spectacles in November 2016, and I have to say, as much as I loved the concept behind the camera glasses, I wasn’t impressed with the overall design or execution of this particular vision.

Unfortunately, the new second-generation Spectacles don’t solve the biggest problems I had with the first model. Let’s dive in:

First, the pros: Snap did make some improvements in Spectacles 2.0.

Snapchat has discovered a way to leverage the power of iPhone X’s TrueDepth camera — and that means you’ll have access to exclusive Lenses if you use Apple’s all-screen mobile device. Starting today, you’ll see TrueDepth-enabled Lenses appear periodically within the Snapchat carousel on iPhone X. They’re AR masks that follow your face around like the app’s many other Lenses, but due to the way TrueDepth works, they can look more realistic and just all around better.

See, Apple’s TrueDepth technology for the X’s selfie camera projects 30,000 infrared dots onto your face. It powers the device’s secure facial recognition system and makes it possible to turn your facial expressions into Animojis. Snap says TrueDepth allows even the smallest details and 3D objects in the Lenses to follow your face’s movements, making masks look more realistic than they usually are. Those 3D objects can also reflect and react to ambient lighting, producing shadows and highlights that follow the contours of your face and the surroundings. Finally, Apple’s technology gives the Lenses more accurate depth detection, which leads to better background blurs, among other style elements.

This isn’t the first time the ephemeral messaging app is using a phone’s capabilities to its advantage. Late last year, it allowed users with ARKit-enabled devices to superimpose Jeff Koons’ giant balloon installations onto specific places in the real world. We’ll probably see more Lenses like these in the future, as Snap works to recapture any user it might have lost due to its pretty unpopular redesign.

Snapchat is getting a funky new augmented reality (AR) feature today in the form of a new World Lens.

The 3D Friendmoji Deluxe World Lens builds on Snapchat’s growing push into AR by allowing you to not only transpose a 3D virtual version of yourself into the real world, but to add one of your friends too.

Though Snapchat began as an app for sharing self-deleting ephemeral photos, it has taken on a whole new life in recent years. Parent company Snap launched its machine learning-based Lenses feature back in September 2015, providing users with a mechanism for sharing photos of themselves with special effects superimposed on their face.

The company later rolled out World Lenses so users could augment their environment with funky animations, before adding 3D Bitmoji to the World Lenses mix last year. Last month, Snap launched Bitmoji Deluxe, offering more customization options for your personal Bitmoji avatar.

With the 3D Friendmoji Deluxe World Lens, Snapchat is adding more “social” to its AR toolset — Snapchat is, after all, a social network at its core.

To add someone to a scene, open a chat with your friend and hit the “capture” button to launch a direct-reply Snap. Then just point your camera at the environment in front of you, choose the Friendmoji Lens from the carousel, and position your Bitmojis where you want them. You will only be able to add a friend to the scene if they have already created a Bitmoji of themselves and linked their Bitmoji account to Snapchat.

Snap procured Bitmoji as part of its $ 100 million acquisition of Bitstrips in 2016, and it’s fair to say it has been a success. Apple revealed in December that Bitmoji was the most-downloaded app in the U.S. App Store last year, with Snapchat taking second place.

Snap has announced a number of new products and features recently, including audience analytics for brands and celebrities, and it also opened its marketing API for all developers and revealed a tie-up with GIF library Giphy. Back in December, Snap launched its first desktop app in the form of Lens Studio, which allows anyone to create their own AR Lenses.

The new 3D Friendmojis are available within the main Snapchat app on Android and iOS from today.

Ahead of its imminent redesign, Snapchat is rolling out new filters that recognize what’s in your snaps to provide contextually-aware graphics. Snap quietly began doling out the new feature (which lives inside its filter carousel) to users last week, the company confirmed to Mashable. You can trigger the filters by capturing images and video of select items — including food, pets, and sports equipment — and objects at locations, such as concerts and beaches.

Although the update sounds similar to the app’s existing, location-based geofilters, it instead relies on the object-recognition patent Snap was granted in July. Like Snapchat’s regular filters, you can bet brands will use the new graphics to crank out ads for their products. If Snap has its way, a pic of a cup of coffee could serve up a coupon for the store it was taken at (as detailed in its patent filing). And, a visit to a restaurant could unlock graphics of its menu. Of course, that would mean more money in Snap’s coffers, which it needs a lot more of if it wants to see a profit.

This week, Snapchat debuted two new ad styles meant to engage its users more and encourage less skipping, TechCrunch reports. So far, the app’s ads have largely consisted of short videos, which followed the last clip in a Story or were placed throughout Discover content, as well as sponsored Lenses that promoted some sort of product. Now, advertisers will have the option of putting together a Promoted Story or an AR Trial ad.

For Promoted Stories, advertisers will be able to create a more in-depth ad featuring three to 10 photos or videos that will work just like any other Snapchat Story. These ads will appear throughout a country for one day and will be labeled as sponsored content. Today, for example, US users will see an HBO Promoted Story featuring six Snaps that show what series or movies you could be watching on HBO instead of engaging in Black Friday shopping.

The AR Trial ads are like more active versions of Snapchat’s sponsored 3D World Lenses. In September, Snapchat released 3D World Lenses that promoted Blade Runner and Bud Light, but they were mostly just fun, not functional. The Bud Light Lens, for example, just featured an AR Bud Light vendor that you could place on whatever surface you liked. But the AR Trial ads are meant to let users get a better look at the product being sold. BMW’s new AR Trial ad will let you place its X2 vehicle in the area you’re viewing through the camera lens and then allow you to walk around it and even change its color.

Snap Inc. had a less than impressive third quarter, reporting just 4.5 million new users, and the company has said it will focus on attracting more users in the coming year. Those efforts include a redesign of the Android version of its app and some significant tweaks to the app overall. Some of those changes are meant to make it easier to navigate through all of the app’s offerings, which is not always intuitive and could help it increase its user base. And that, like these new ad formats, is likely to please Snapchat’s partners.
