In the hierarchy of things you don’t put in your mouth, fireworks are right up there with razor blades and hobos, but nothing will stand in the way of Nabisco’s relentless quest to keep Snacktaku from eating things that aren’t Oreos.

Firework Oreos, in stores now alongside something called Waffle and Syrup Oreos (which we have top men searching for), do not feature caked gunpowder wafers sandwiched around sulfur-infused creme. In the snack business they call that a missed opportunity. You have to take risks, even if those risks involve murdering a prominent snackologist on camera.

But no, Firework Oreos are just plain Oreos with red, white and blue “popping candy” mixed into the creme. That’s “popping candy” and not Pop Rocks, the famed carbonated candy that launched in 1975 and are the focus of a rumor about exploding stomachs spread by gullible scamps. It’s generic. It’s lawsuit-unfriendly. Not Pop Rocks.

Long story short, they are Oreos. They smell like Oreos. They taste like Oreos. Dredging your tongue around your mouth after eating one, you may be able to isolate a candy piece, which offers a slight hint of fruit-ish flavor, but otherwise they are Oreos that make noise inside your skull. Did you want noise inside your skull? If so, then here you go.

As holiday-themed Oreos go, at least we’re getting these instead of a healthy dose of blue and red food coloring. Nothing says “American independence” like a purple toilet (Purple Toilet is the name of my Prince tribute death metal band).

As if monsters and superheroes weren’t enough, General Mills is now recruiting members of America’s finest cookie-selling force into his nigh-unstoppable breakfast army. The Girl Scouts have landed in our cereal bowls, and Snacktaku responds in the only way we know how.

Here at Snacktaku, we’ve long kicked around the idea of doing a review of the Girl Scouts’ baked offerings, but the idea of sampling each flavor in a single video proved too daunting. Plus we kept eating them before setting up the camera.

Along comes General Mills, commander of all things oat, corn, wheat and milk-soaked, with a much more manageable pair of edible Girl Scout products.

Snacktaku’s office looks exactly like this, down to the bowl of fruit.

Leveraging two of the most popular Girl Scout cookie flavors, General Mills brings the taste of waiting for several weeks for your co-worker’s daughter to get her shit together to our breakfast tables. We’ve got Thin Mints, based on the chocolate mint cookie of the same name, and Caramel Crunch, because eating a heaping bowl of Samoas is offensive to Samoans, especially in our post-Moana world.

Before diving in, Snacktaku predicted that Thin Mints cereal would be horrible and wrong, while Caramel Crunch would share a flavor profile with the Caramel Popcorn variety of Cap’n Crunch, from rival breakfast army Quaker Oats.

Wrong on both counts, Snacktaku.

Turns your milk brownishly!

Chocolate mint did not sound like a delicious breakfast combination, but we underestimated the effect of cold milk on Thin Mints cereal. Though individual pieces came on a bit strong and the mint scent was slightly overpowering, once awash in cold milk the flavors blend together to form a sort of mint chocolate chip ice cream jam. Snacktaku is a big fan of mint chocolate chip ice cream.

As for Samoa Cereal (it is, dammit!), the caramel popcorn flavor is there, but the pieces are also flecked with cocoa and instilled with a mild coconut flavor. It’s exactly like eating a bowl of tiny Samoa cookies, only without getting caramel and coconut stuck between your teeth.

Fine. You win this round, General Mills, but now that we’ve tasted greatness, we’re craving more. Bring on the Tagalong cereal. Our mouths are ready.

The two weeks are up, and it’s time to put Taco Bell’s new fried chicken taco shell creation into our mouths, for science. Sometimes science is pretty awesome. Believe it or not, this is one of those times.

After pulling off a major win a few years back with its Doritos Locos Tacos, normal tacos wrapped in a delicate powdered flavor embrace, Taco Bell rode rode their experimental success straight into a brick wall with the word “Quesalupa” spray-painted on it. They hyped that oily cheese-stuffed monster for weeks, whipping our taste buds into a frenzy of ill-advised desire, only to let us down.

So it’s understandable that we be wary of Naked Chicken Chalupa. Announced just a few short weeks ago, Taco Bell’s latest potential abomination replaced the thick corn tortilla that normally hugs a chalupa’s innards with a breaded and fried chicken disk. That disk is then stuffed with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and an avocado ranch sauce. It might sound harmless, but we’ve been burned before.

They really want people to know what they just ordered and are eating.

Today is the launch day of the Naked Chicken Chalupa, so I traveled to my local Taco Bell and ordered three of the $ 2.99 menu items, which somehow came to $ 10.47 before taxes. My local Taco Bell is excellent. It’s my favorite place to have my credit card duped.

The Naked Chicken Chalupa certainly doesn’t look like a mouth-rending monstrosity. In the picture below it almost looks like the golden-battered fried chicken is smiling, like it’s happy to be eaten. It’s friend chicken.

See food. Wait, I get it now. You see the food! Hahahaha. Oh man, I gotta call Jerry from summer camp.

It’s insides are, as expected, a simple combination of lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and green ranch dressing. I do not recommend eating it open-faced.

We call this moment “The Chew.” Or we would if we weren’t afraid of being sued by The Chew.

It smells like a fried chicken patty. It looks like a fried chicken patty. Once it’s securely inside of your chewing orifice, it tastes like a particularly juicy fried chicken patty, though that’s mainly an illusion created by the sauce and roughage. Still, it’s an excellent bite, especially when warm.

The chicken disk is spiced, bringing a little bit of heat to the party, a heat that’s perfectly balanced by the avocado ranch sauce. The lettuce and tomato do a fine job of overriding the greasy sensation that’s often a result of the frying process, resulting in a mouthful of delicious things without the usual aftertaste of fast food guilt.

Well done, Taco Bell, especially on the restraint. You could have put anything inside tasty fried chicken disk. You could have filled the chicken patty with beef, squirted it with nacho cheese, wrapped it in a flour tortilla and grilled it for some stupid reason, but no. You kept it simple, and the end result is simply tasty.

Not only has Taco Bell made up for the Quesalupa, I’m giving them a pass on their next horrific fuck up. Let’s make taco shells out of beef!
