Of course, a snack can help satisfy your hunger quick, but if you are tired of relying on the office vending machine for a sweet treat, you’d probably love to know that there are plenty of snacks available which are healthy, filling, and are low in fat.
To bring these kinds of yummy snacks to your radar, we spoke to a handful of dietitians about all the fulfilling snacks that won’t pack on excess fat. Below are some of the yummy and not to mention nutritious snack picks they recommend giving a shot.
Sarah Schmalbruch/INSIDER
“Three cups of air-popped popcorn is only 100 calories and contains about 2.5 grams of fat,” said registered dietitians Lyssie Lakatos, RDN, CDN, CFT and Tammy Lakatos Shames, RDN, CDN, CFT of the Nutrition Twins. It’s a good source of fiber to help keep you feeling full, and it contains magnesium for muscle and bone strength, potassium, and antioxidants, they explained.

“A lite whole grain toaster waffle topped with two tablespoons of nonfat Greek yogurt and some mandarin orange pieces is an easy way to get a fast and balanced snack,” said registered dietitian Summer Yule, MS, RDN. The protein and fiber in this snack are filling without the fat, she added.

“Two cups of diced watermelon offer a large volume for under 100 calories and (almost) zero fat,” Yule explained. Other melons such as cantaloupe and honeydew also offer a large volume and no or low fat for the calories, she said.

How does this magic work exactly? Well, let me tell you:
Incorporating snacks into your mid-morning and mid-afternoon can balance out your blood sugar, preventing those dreaded spikes and crashes. A proper snack can also lead to sustained energy by providing you with energy all day long.
Remember, food is fuel. So without adding gas to your tank, you will quickly run out leading to decreased productivity and a crabby mood.
What about the healthy weight you may ask? When you provide your body with proper fuel throughout the day, you don’t meet meal time with starvation. You have more control when you dinner plate lands on the table, leading to decreased portions and less chance of over-eating. In fact, oftentimes I recommend snacks to most of my nutrition clientele.
The perfect snack follows a simple formula: Protein + Produce. This will give you carbs for a quick energy bump combined with fiber and protein for sustaining that energy. The importance of mindful eating is massive. Rachel Zimmerman, an R.D. at Indiana University Hospital at IU Health states the following:
“Just because snack foods like dark chocolate, nut butters, and avocado have earned nutritional kudos for being good sources of heart-healthy fats and other nutrients, that doesn’t mean you should eat a ton of them.”
The most important step is mindfulness. The key to getting started is being mindful when making snack choices. For a guide to mindful eating, please take a look my other article:The Best Benefits of Mindful Eating for Weight Loss and How to Start NowMindfulness isn’t something that is taught to us. It is something that you seek to learn and incorporate in your day to day living. Many of us don’t know the truth about food and the role that food plays in our lives and in our health. This creates unhealthy habits.Food is usually used as a substance for pleasure instead of nourishment. We devour most things in front of us without being mindful and aware about what we are actually consuming:((Carla Naumburg: A Mindful S.N.A.C.K))

Hand luggage is being closely examined at major US airports, with officials asking travellers to remove snacks and powders from their bags for extra security checks.
The Transport Security Administration (TSA) in America is tightening security in a bid to counter terrorism – although the food policy is not an official one.
However, officers at many airports across the US are enforcing the rule.
Airline passengers travelling though major airports including Newark, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco have been asked to remove both snacks and powders, according to the Telegraph.
Some travellers are being asked to put the food they’d bought to eat on board the plane into separate bins for further inspection.
The increased security levels are resulting in delays.
One passenger even missed a flight due to the severe delays caused by rigorous checks.
Furthermore, the increased security is causing confusion for those who do not speak English.
A TSA spokeswoman told Express.co.uk: “TSA has no policy that mandates that travellers remove food items from their carry-on bags to be placed in separate bins for checkpoint screening.
“However,TSA recommends that passengers consider doing so to lessen the likelihood that there will be a need to open a carry-on bag for a more thorough inspection.”
The TSA say that food in bags can make it harder for hand luggage to be screened.
Their website states: “TSA officers may instruct travellers to separate items from carry-on bags such as foods, powders, and any materials that can clutter bags and obstruct clear images on the X-ray machine.
“Travellers are encouraged to organise their carry-on bags and keep them uncluttered to ease the screening process and keep the lines moving.”
They add: “Even if an item is generally permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the checkpoint if it triggers an alarm during the screening process, appears to have been tampered with, or poses other security concerns.”
The TSA is carrying out these thorough checks as it strives to constantly adapt security methods to tackle what it describes as an evolving terrorist threat.
“As part of its counterterrorism efforts, TSA continuously enhances and adjusts security screening procedures to stay ahead of evolving threats,” the spokeswoman said.
“TSA’s top priority is to protect the traveling public, and every policy and security procedure in place is designed to mitigate threats to passengers and the aviation sector – which we know our adversaries continue to target.
“Adjustments to screening procedures are a necessary part of operations and TSA does so in the most efficient and effective way possible while maintaining a positive passenger experience.
“Intelligence tells us that our adversaries are adept at artfully concealing explosives in common items that individuals travel with, such as food.”
However, the stricter checks do not mean passengers can’t bring food. “It is important to note that travellers can continue to bring their snacks with them,” the spokeswoman explained. “There has been no change in what food items travellers can bring with them through a checkpoint.”
DIABETES type 2 symptoms include increased thirst and hunger and needing to urinate more frequently. Treatment includes controlling your diet to avoid blood sugar levels spiking, which can cause damage to your body. However, if you’re hungry in the evenings you could try these snacks before bed.![]()
The body needs enough sleep to help it function properly, according to the NHS.
Not getting enough sleep is bad for your health; mentally and physically.
Regular poor sleep increases your risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes.
You’re also more likely to develop depression and anxiety if you don’t get enough rest.
But, you could get a better night’s rest by adding these five food and drinks to your bedtime diet.
Eating kiwi fruit before bed could help you to fall asleep, and wake up feeling refreshed, according to Dr Brianna Elliott.
Snack on two kiwis before getting into bed, as you could fall asleep 42 per cent faster, she said.
“The sleep-promoting effects of kiwis are thought to be due to their content of serotonin, a brain chemical that helps regulate your sleep cycle,” said Elliott.
“It has also been suggested that the antioxidants in kiwis, such as vitamin C and carotenoids, may be partly responsible for their sleep-promoting effects. This is thought to be due to their role in reducing inflammation.”
Almonds are a great source of magnesium.
Magnesium could promote sleep by reducing inflammation, and reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
“If you want to eat almonds before bed to determine if they impact your sleep quality, a one ounce [28g] serving, or about a handful, should be adequate,” said Elliott.
“Chamomile tea is a popular herbal tea that may offer a variety of health benefits,” she said.
“Specifically, chamomile tea contains apigenin, an antioxidant that binds to certain receptors in your brain that may promote sleepiness and reduce insomnia.”
Drinking chamomile tea for two weeks before bed could improve your sleep quality.
White rice has a high glycaemic index, which means it takes longer for the body to break it down into sugar.
High glycaemic index foods could improve your sleep quality.
Try eating white rice an hour before bedtime to get a better night’s sleep.
“Despite the potential role that eating white rice may have in promoting sleep, it is best consumed in moderation due to its lack of fibre and nutrients,” said Elliot.
“Tart cherry juice is also known to promote sleepiness, and it has even been studied for its role in relieving insomnia,” she said.
“For these reasons, drinking tart cherry juice before bed may improve your sleep quality.
“The sleep-promoting effects of tart cherry juice are due to its high content of melatonin, which is a hormone that regulates your internal clock and signals your body to prepare for sleep.”
Fatty fish includes salmon, tuna, trout and mackerel.
They’re all rich in vitamin D, as well as omega-3 fatty acids.
The combination of both vitamin D and omega-3s could enhance sleep quality, said Elliott.
The nutrients help to increase the production of serotonin, which is a sleep-promoting brain chemical.
DIABETES type 2 symptoms include weight loss, extreme tiredness and having cuts or wounds that take longer to heal than usual. Adding these five food and drinks to your breakfast diet could lower your risk of high blood sugar.![]()
TEENAGERS who watch lots of TV with adverts are more likely to eat junk food, suggesting a “strong association between advertisements and eating habits”, according to a report yesterday.![]()
British Airways customers will be thrilled to discover the return of a second meal option on long-haul flights.
Magnum ice creams and Graze snack boxes will also be available as free snacks.
The new changes are part of a multi-million pound revamp promised by Alex Cruz, the head of BA, late last year.
In a speech at the World Travel Market, the Chief Executive admitted some of the recent changes had proved unpopular with passengers and said mistakes had been made.
An earlier overhaul had seen BA customers travelling long-haul in Economy served a complimentary snack and a three-course-meal or a light meal, depending on the time and length of their flight, plus drinks.
Now, customers will be offered pretzels and a drink at the start of their flight.
They will then enjoy a four-course meal with starter, main, dessert, cheese and biscuits, accompanied by a bread roll and bottle of water.
On shorter daylight long-haul flights to destinations like New York and Dubai, fliers will also receive a sandwich and a chocolate or Nutri-Grain bar.
On longer daylight long-haul flights to areas such as Cape Town and Hong Kong, crew will serve an extra hot meal like a pizza wrap or a regional option, with a pot of pasta, a chocolate brownie and a drink, as well as a smokehouse BBQ crunch Graze movie-snack box.
Longer overnight flight customers will receive a cooked breakfast.
Customers on daylight flights from London will be offered a selection of Magnum ice-creams to enjoy in-between meals, while night fliers will be offered a tuck-box featuring items like Dairy Milk Buttons, Twix, Kit-Kats and Mini Cheddars.
The new catering arrives from January 17 and menus will change every six months.
Carolina Martinoli, British Airways’ director of brand and customer experience, said: “Our new four-course main meal has been developed by our team of chefs to be full of flavour at 35,000ft and we’ve created regional options depending on the route.
“Our customers have also told us they want to be able to save some items for later in the flight, so we’ve replaced the water cup with a bottle of Highland Spring on the first meal, and added Graze snack boxes on our longest flights.
“We’re also offering Magnum ice-creams on daylight flights from London and a Tuck Box on inbound and overnight flights.”
