European Commission regulators have suggested that smartphones and tablets sold there offer 15 different kinds of spare parts for at least five years, as part of a broad effort to lessen their environmental impact.

A draft regulation of “ecodesign requirements for mobile phones, cordless phones, and slate tablets” posted on August 31 notes that phones and tablets are “often replaced prematurely by users” and are “not sufficiently used or recycled” (i.e., junk-drawer-ed) at the end of their life. The cost is the energy and new materials mined from the earth for new phones, and unrecycled materials sitting in homes. Extending the lives of smartphones by five years—from their current typical two- to three-year lives—would be like taking 5 million cars off the road, according to the Commission’s findings.

The most notable proposed fix (listed in Annex II) is for phone makers and sellers to make “professional repairers” available for five years after the date a phone is removed from the market. Those repairers would have access to parts including the battery, display, cameras, charging ports, mechanical buttons, microphones, speakers, and hinge assemblies (including for folding phones and tablets).

Citing data from analytics firm Counterpoint Research, the Financial Times reports the iPhone overtook the entire Android ecosystem in June to claim 50 percent of US market share. In doing so, Apple achieved its highest-ever share of the American smartphone market. Apple achieved the feat on the back of the iPhone’s “active installed base,” a metric that takes into account all the people who are using an iOS device after purchasing one used.

In the early days of the iPhone, iOS (then known as iPhone OS) never had anywhere near 50 percent market share. At that time, companies like Blackberry, Nokia and Motorola dominated the smartphone space. By 2010, two years after its debut, Android overtook iOS to claim the larger install base. Ever since then, Google’s mobile operating system has been the dominant force in the global smartphone market, claiming more than 70 percent market share as of 2022, according to Statcounter.

Google probably has nothing to worry about. After all, the iPhone has always had an outsized presence in the US compared to other markets. Still, the company is likely looking at the situation closely. “This is a big milestone that we could see replicated in other affluent countries across the globe,” Jeff Fieldhack, Counterpoint’s research director, told The Times. To that point, Apple dominated the premium smartphone market in Q2 2022, with the iPhone representing 57 percent of all sales in the segment and shows no signs of slowing down.

Apple wasn’t joking around when it warned that the Chinese smartphone market gave it grief in the fall. IDC estimated that iPhone shipments fell just shy of 20 percent year-over-year toward the end of 2018, hitting 11.8 million. It’s the third consecutive year of declines, the analyst group said, blaming this year’s drop on a combination of higher prices and relatively modest updates. Customers just weren’t in as much of a rush to upgrade as they were in years past. Throw in China’s economic woes and stiff competition from local rivals and it’s not shocking that iPhone sales took a dive.

If there’s any consolation for the company, it’s that many of its Chinese competitors were in the same boat. Huawei’s phone shipments surged 23.3 percent, but Xiaomi and other big names saw their units plunge as well. Even the sister brands Oppo and Vivo, which have been historically strong, barely improved their numbers. Handsets like the Find X and NEX S couldn’t overcome economic headaches, then.

It’s not certain how Apple could turn things around in the near future. The company’s Tim Cook did hint at adjusting prices for some countries, but slightly lower costs would still make the iPhone expensive compared to many of the offerings from Chinese competitors — and that won’t change the economy. Simply speaking, things might not get better until there’s either an economic recovery or a larger change in Apple’s lineup.

Despite a price tag far lower than those of high-end flagship phones, Huawei’s Honor View 20 packs a handful of forward-looking features that some people will be able to use right away. We’ve already seen the likes of Razer and ASUS making a push in the gaming smartphone market, but what you probably don’t know is that Xiaomi has also been somewhat involved in this space — just not with its own identity. Dubbed Black Shark, this startup has been leveraging Xiaomi’s investment and smartphone manufacturing know-how, with the first result being a bold-looking gaming phone back in April. Fast forward to today, Black Shark is already back with a beefier model called Helo, and it’s shaping up to be a prettier package both externally and internally.

Much like the earlier device, the Helo is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 and is backed by vapor-chamber cooling for smoother gameplay, plus it still has a nice 4,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0, along with a pair of front-facing speakers which is great for all sorts of entertainment. Likewise, you get the same 12MP 1.25um f/1.75 + 20MP main camera combination (but now aligned vertically along the middle above the rear fingerprint reader), along with a 20MP 1um f/2.2 front camera. Another familiar feature here is the “Shark” mode toggle switch on the left: Flip it on and you’ll be greeted by a UI plus various system settings optimized for gaming.

What’s new this time is that everything else has been given a little boost under this relatively more low-profile hood, with the memory ranging from the usual 6GB all the way up to 10GB (LPDDR4X, 1,866MHz), and storage space going from 64GB all the way up to 256GB (UFS 2.1). Another major upgrade is that the old 5.99-inch 2,160 x 1,080 LCD has been replaced by a more vibrant 6.01-inch AMOLED panel of the same resolution.

And let’s not forget about the new RGB lights here. Like the Razer Phone 2 and ASUS ROG Phone, the Helo features a customizable backlit logo on the back as well, though at the time of trying this unit, the colors were limited to just eight options instead of the full 16.8 million range. At least I was still able to pick other blinking patterns and control the brightness. There is also a short LED strip on both sides of the phone, and these are supposed to react to gameplay, but again, the prototype could only light them up upon toggling to gaming mode.

The most interesting part of this package is the Bluetooth game controller. With the phone placed in the bundled protection case, you can slide the controller down the slit along the phone’s top side, and this gives you more precise thumb control via the joystick along with left shoulder triggers, while also giving you more viewable screen space.

During my brief hands-on, I got to try this accessory in a quick round of PUBG, and it was a blast until my avatar got gunned down — I just need more practise. And of course, when you’re done with such hardcore gaming, simply slide the controller out, and you can keep the case on if you wish to. I also got to compare a similar implementation on the original Black Shark, and I must say, the new one had a more comfortable grip plus a more solid build quality.

Sadly, the Black Shark Helo is only available in China for now. It starts from 3,199 yuan or about $ 460 (6GB RAM, 128GB storage) which is still rather competitively priced given the features. Then it goes all the way up to 4,199 yuan or about $ 605 for the “Sports Edition” with a whopping 10GB of RAM, 256GB of storage plus a right-hand controller as well, though this won’t arrive until December 12th, meaning it might not be the first 10GB RAM device to hit the market — maybe that title will go to the upcoming Xiaomi Mix 3 or a variant of Oppo’s Find X instead.
