An iPhone mini, surrounded by other iPhones.
The iPhone mini had all the features of a normal iPhone, but in a smaller size.

  • Apple isn't making a "mini" version of the iPhone 14, marking an apparent end to their popular line of smaller iPhones.
  • The iPhone 13 mini is the only mini iPhone that Apple still sells, with a 5.4-inch screen.
  • They also still sell the iPhone SE, which has a smaller 4.7-inch screen but a bigger body.

The iPhone mini line has an incredibly devoted fanbase. So when this year's Apple event came and went without a new iPhone 14 mini, there were a lot of broken hearts in the audience.

But even with no new iPhone mini, Apple still sells some powerful small phones.

If you're a fan of Apple's small smartphones, here's a quick guide to what's still available.

There are two small iPhones still on the market

After the reveal of the iPhone 14, Apple stopped selling a few older iPhone models. One of these discontinued models was the iPhone 12 mini.

With that iPhone gone, there are only two small-sized iPhones still up for sale on Apple's website: the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone SE (3rd generation).

iPhone 13 mini

The iPhone 13 mini has a 5.4-inch screen size, nearly a full inch smaller than the standard iPhone 13. It's about 5.18 inches tall, 2.53 inches wide, and 0.3 inches deep. Altogether, it weighs 4.97 ounces.

Despite this, the OLED screen still offers full HD resolution, and the phone itself is just as powerful and full-featured as the standard iPhone 13.

You can buy the iPhone 13 mini from Apple's website, where it starts at $ 599.

iPhone SE

The iPhone SE (3rd generation) is even smaller with a 4.7-inch screen — however, this is largely due to the physical Touch ID button that takes up part of the phone's lower half. Because of the button, the phone's casing is bigger than the iPhone 13 mini: It's about 5.45 inches tall, 2.65 inches wide, and 0.29 inches deep. It weighs 5.09 ounces altogether.

Intended to be their ultra-budget model, Apple sells the iPhone SE starting at $ 429. It offers nearly all of the same features as the iPhone 13, but isn't as water-resistant, and has a lower resolution screen.

The iPhone SE still has a Home button.

How do these small iPhones compare to the regular models?

Here's a chart gathering all the size data we listed above, and comparing it to Apple's smallest current-gen phone, the iPhone 14.

  • Amazon Go’s newest store measures less than 500 square feet.
  • Its small size belies the huge ambition it represents.
  • The Go concept is expanding rapidly, with reports indicating Amazon could put it everywhere from airports to larger places like Whole Foods.

Amazon’s newest store is smaller than the average New York City apartment.

The company unveiled a small-format version of its cashier-less Go concept on Wednesday. It measures only 450 square feet, and it looks more like a giant vending machine than a small store. It sells only prepared foods, drinks, and snacks — and none of the “grocery” essentials some of the other Go stores offer.

Leon McCarron

One of the world’s smallest and most ancient faiths, the Israelite Samaritans remain mysterious to many. Our featured contributor Leon McCarron traveled to the Holy Land during Passover to spend time with this unique community.

Jerusalem is often described as the holiest city in the world—after all, it’s held sacred by Jews, Christians and Muslims. And it’s fair to say that, in a land where we hear often of the separations along religious lines, the sanctity of Jerusalem to Abrahamic faiths is one that can be agreed upon—even if the sharing of that is far from simple.

And yet, there is another place held holy too, by another Abrahamic community. They are a faith and ethnicity that many of us may not even realize still exist: The Israelite Samaritans.

The name will be recognizable to those familiar with the Bible, and particularly from the parable of the Good Samaritan. In Roman times, there were perhaps a million and a half Samaritans but now, two millennia on, there are now just over 800.

They are, of course, much like the rest of us. Abood Cohen, (pictured, top), getting a shave, is the grandson of the High Priest, and studies at the local university in Nablus. In his spare time, he likes to play computer games and basketball with his friends.

His parents, and many of the other working adults in the Samaritan village of Kiryat Luza on Gerizim, work regular jobs in Nablus and occasionally in Tel Aviv. This latter point is one of the ways in which Samaritans are unique—they are not Palestinians, nor are they Israelis. They hold the identity cards of both (which no other group can do) and travel freely through Israel and the West Bank. As a result, they can live on Gerizim, but commute to the hustle and bustle of the big Israeli cities.

I was allowed to observe their Passover and it was one of the most remarkable events that I have ever witnessed.

Throughout the day, the Samaritans gathered, mostly dressed in white, with the elders in colorful, embroidered robes, to talk with one another and survey the preparations being undertaken by a few select professionals. As they chatted and the younger members took selfies, I was told regularly as I walked around that this was the best day of the year.

The carnival atmosphere continued until prayers began, and as night fell, the Samaritans sang and chanted in Ancient Hebrew—a language of which they are guardians, and the sole remaining speakers. In Hebrew, they are known as Shomronim, or ‘The Keepers’.

Eventually, the sheep were brought in and at the zenith of the prayers, the High Priest uttered the command. Within minutes, the carcasses were skinned and prepared, plunged into fire pits, then covered to create an airless chamber to be cooked in. The smell of roasting lamb permeated the air as families hugged, sang and celebrated into the night.

The rest of the Passover week was time for families to spend together, punctuated by visits to the synagogue. I wandered around the small village with Benyamim, Abood and others, and was reminded that a key function of the festival was for Samaritans to spend time with each other, not just in worship.

The final act would be the dawn pilgrimage to the most sacred spot on the mountain. At 4am, I stood outside the synagogue as the men of the community, dressed entirely in white, began the march to the summit. They’d stop at different stations of sanctity along the way, and as the sun flooded onto the mountain and across the Holy Land, the High Priest raised the Torah to the sky, above the spot where Abraham was asked to sacrifice his son Isaac, one of the most important Old Testament stories.

I consider myself fortunate to have had the chance to spend time with Samaritans during Passover, and on a number of occasions since. Less than a decade ago, there were just over a hundred Samaritans left, and so today’s figures show an encouraging upward trend.

The community is different, and unique, and for those of us who grew up with other Abrahamic traditions, the distinctions are fascinating. Yet it’s important too that we don’t exoticize them for those differences. They share and embrace many of the same traits that permeate the wider region—exceedingly warm hospitality, for example—and they combine their ancient practices with other elements of an ultra-modern lifestyle.

They also have a unique, liminal role in the complexities of the geopolitics of the region. Elders like Benny believe they can even be a force to help bring Israelis and Palestinians together; to be a bridge of peace. With the Samaritans going from strength to strength, it is certainly not impossible. Perhaps most important of all is that in a region that can often seem impossibly divided, they bring something rare and wonderful: Hope.

  • The island nation of Bahrain announced Wednesday that it discovered a shale reserve with at least 80 billion barrels of crude oil.
  • Like other producers, Bahrain’s government relies on oil revenues to fund itself, and its deficit was worsened by the oil crash that began in 2014.
  • Halliburton will frack the shale reserve to evaluate how much oil in the find is actually extractable.

Bahrain announced on Wednesday that it discovered at least 80 billion barrels of crude oil in a shale reserve.

The island kingdom to the east of Saudi Arabia is the smallest and oldest energy producer in the Persian Gulf, according to Bloomberg.

Japan launches smallest rocket ever to carry satellite into orbit https://briefnews.eu/japan-launches-smallest-rocket-ever-to-carry-satellite-into-orbit/ https://briefnews.eu/japan-launches-smallest-rocket-ever-to-carry-satellite-into-orbit/#respond Sat, 03 Feb 2018 20:44:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/japan-launches-smallest-rocket-ever-to-carry-satellite-into-orbit/

Japan has set a new spaceflight record — and unlike most of these feats, it’s defined by what wasn’t involved. The country’s Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has successfully launched the smallest-ever rocket to carry a satellite into orbit, a modest SS-520 sounding rocket modified with a third stage inside its nose cone to get its payload into orbit. As you might guess, the key to the record was the tiny cargo — the rocket was carrying TRICOM-1R, a three-unit cubesat measuring just 13.6 inches long. You don’t need a giant vehicle when the mission hardware would fit in the backseat of your car.

The success came just over a year after JAXA’s original experiment with an SS-520 rocket ended in failure. Crews decided against igniting the second stage when the vehicle lost all telemetry data a mere 20 seconds after takeoff. An investigation later determined that the likely cause was a poorly protected electrical connection, and the agency decided to try again this year with a fix in place.

There are no known plans to launch similar SS-520 missions in the near future, so this probably won’t become a regular occurrence for a while. It does take Japan one step closer to regular mini satellite launches, however. And Japan isn’t alone — companies like Rocket Lab are making progress on their own small rockets powerful enough for orbital delivery. Large rockets aren’t going away any time soon, but they might not be nearly as vital as they used to be.

Harry and his motherMARK KEHOE

Harry Lane was one of the smallest babies ever born in the UK

Yet Harry, one of the smallest babies ever born in the UK, clung to life and is now home to celebrate his first proper Christmas.

Linda Lane, 29, who lives in Leicester with husband Matthew, 40, a bus driver, said: “To see Harry getting stronger and stronger each day really is a miracle.

“When he was born he was so tiny, he was the size of the palm of my hand.

“I would look at him lying in his incubator surrounded by tubes and wires and be amazed at how anything that small could possible survive.”

Harry’s battle for survival began when Mrs Lane was just 23 weeks pregnant.

She had been thrilled to find out she was pregnant after her first attempt at fertility treatment.

She had been diagnosed with a condition which meant she was unlikely to conceive naturally.

“I was devastated because I’d always imagined myself having children.

“So we decided that we would have IVF treatment to help us.

“It was amazing when we discovered I was pregnant in March last year.”

Her pregnancy went smoothly until she suddenly started to bleed last August – the baby had been due in December.

She was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary where doctors discovered she was in premature labour.

Mrs Lane, a nursery manager, said: “I was terrified when I was told that I was in labour.

“I knew it was too early to be giving birth and I thought how can this tiny baby possibly survive.”

Harry arrived hours later weighing just 15.8 ounces.

Doctors gave Mrs Lane steroid injections to try to develop his lungs before the birth.

“When he was delivered, he was lying there covered with tubes and wires, and he was so tiny that I couldn’t even hold him,” she said.

“I just had to hope and pray that he would be strong enough to fight on and not lose the fight for life.”

He spent 17 weeks in hospital before being allowed home just before Christmas last year.

But he was too fragile for the family to enjoy the festivities, something they plan to put right this year.

Last year Harry was way too fragile to be able to enjoy his first Christmas

Harry, born on August 11, 2016, has defied all expectations to pull through.

He weighs only 18lbs however and wears clothes for babies up to 12 months.

Mrs Lane said: “He has put on so much weight now.

“We are so thankful that he’s home and well now.

“We are going to have an amazing Christmas with him this year.

“It is his first proper Christmas because even though he came home just before last Christmas, he was still so fragile.

“Now he’s coming on in leaps and bounds and is crawling.

“We can’t wait for Christmas, we feel so lucky to have him with us.

“He’s got a fantastic appetite and his favourite is a roast dinner, so he’ll be tucking into his turkey with us.

“The fact that he is here and I can celebrate Christmas with my little fighter is just the most amazing feeling.

“He’s fought such a hard battle and I’m so proud of him.

“He’s the best Christmas present I could ask for.”

The world’s smallest Mona Lisa is made from DNA https://briefnews.eu/the-worlds-smallest-mona-lisa-is-made-from-dna/ https://briefnews.eu/the-worlds-smallest-mona-lisa-is-made-from-dna/#respond Thu, 07 Dec 2017 03:13:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-worlds-smallest-mona-lisa-is-made-from-dna/

Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa painting isn’t actually that big (30 inches tall), but Caltech researchers have found a way to make that seem downright gargantuan. They’ve used DNA to construct the smallest known Mona Lisa. At several hundred nanometers across, they’re roughly as large as a lone E. coli bacterium — the iconic smile is just 100nm wide. The trick was an adaptation of a DNA “origami” method that got the gene strands to fold and assemble into the right shape.

The Mona Lisa is divided into squares, each of which is folded by using one long DNA strand manipulated by “staples” (short, custom-designed strands) that bind to and pull on it. After that, it’s a matter of attaching the squares to a DNA canvas. You do that by isolating each square into a test tube and combining them in progressively larger squares (2×2, 4×4 and finally 8×8) until Mona Lisa shows her mysterious face. Each square has edges designed only to join in a specific way, so the wrong pieces can’t attach to each other by mistake.

As you can use a combination of software and automatic liquid handling to make these mini paintings, you’re really just limited by your creativity — the team also ‘drew’ portraits of bacteria and a rooster to show what was possible. And that, in turn, could lead to more practical uses. DNA-based nanostructures like this could help build extremely dense circuits, exotic organic materials or just tests for chemical and molecular interactions. This might not be the smallest piece of art you’ve ever seen, but the technology behind it could be incredibly useful beyond recreating masterpieces.
