Russian President Vladimir Putin.

  • A halt in gas supplies to Europe could cost Russia as much as $ 6.6 billion a year, per Bloomberg.
  • The export slump could lead to deep cuts in Russian gas output, hitting domestic energy goals.
  • The EU's oil embargo could also cause production of the fuel to fall, leading to a shortage in Russia.

Russia has halted natural-gas flows to Europe via a key pipeline amid the war in Ukraine, but the move may end up biting itself, according to Bloomberg, citing an internal document prepared for the Russian government.

While Russia is an energy giant, most of its exports go to European customers. In 2021, Europe snapped up about half of Russia's oil products and three-quarters of its natural gas, according to the US Energy Information Administration.

Thus, a fall in exports to Europe means Russian natural-gas production would have to fall to better meet lower shipment needs. This would, in turn, hit Moscow's plans to boost domestic gas supplies, per Bloomberg, citing the report.

Additionally, a complete halt in natural-gas supplies to Europe could cost the Kremlin as much as 400 billion rubles, or $ 6.6 billion, a year in tax revenues, according to Russia's internal report, per the media outlet. While Russia is trying to diversify its customer base, new markets will not be able to make up lost sales from European customers in the medium term.

As Europe is also set to ban most Russian oil imports from the end of 2022, the demand slump could lead to a deep cut in Russian production, causing a shortage of the fuel domestically, Bloomberg reported, citing the internal report.

Overall, the internal Russian report paints a gloomy picture of the country's economy amid sweeping sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine — which contrasts sharply with more upbeat data from the Kremlin in recent months.

The situation could worsen if the world enters a recession. That's because Russia would've already lost its stable European market, causing it to become a "swing supplier" of energy products — with the country having to adjust and adapt its output to changing market demands, according to the report.

This would mean that a plunge in demand for Russian oil products could have an adverse economic impact, such as pushing up inflation in the country and putting downward pressure on the ruble, the report warned, per Bloomberg.

WHEN Wang Xianchen, a Chinese official in the early 1500s, tired of the scheming of imperial politics, he returned to his home in the southern city of Suzhou for a simpler life. He planted gnarled trees and built up rocky islets, creating what he called the “Humble Administrator’s Garden”, a fine place for tranquil contemplation. His garden remains stunning. But its tranquillity is long gone. During the first week of October, China’s National Day holiday, some 30,000 people walked over its stone arch bridges every day, with queues to get in stretching around the block. They were among the 726m visitors to domestic tourist sites during the week, a record and a rise of 9% on last year’s figure. China’s present-day administrators, less humble, touted this as proof of the economy’s resilience despite a growing catalogue of concerns.

The backdrop certainly looks ominous. The trade war with America is heating up. In a speech on October 4th, Mike Pence, the vice-president, accused China of…

Apple apologises after teenager exposes tech giant SLOWS down older iPhones https://briefnews.eu/apple-apologises-after-teenager-exposes-tech-giant-slows-down-older-iphones/ https://briefnews.eu/apple-apologises-after-teenager-exposes-tech-giant-slows-down-older-iphones/#respond Fri, 29 Dec 2017 23:05:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apple-apologises-after-teenager-exposes-tech-giant-slows-down-older-iphones/

Tyler, 17, from Tennessee, is being credited with discovering the suspected ploy after noticing problems with his iPhone 6s and testing it against his brother’s iPhone 6 – which is an older model but a year younger than his.

He said his brother’s phone was noticeably faster. After doing some online research, Tyler came across a suggestion to replace the battery in his phone which improved the performance.

He said: “It worked and after that I made a post about it so I could let people know how they can speed up their phone.

“Your phone takes too much power for the battery to handle when your battery gets old.”

Tyler’s post on message board website Reddit went viral and led to Apple’s admission of “throttling” some of its phones.

Tyler said: “A lot of people are kind of blaming Apple saying ‘I feel so betrayed’ but the more I looked into it, the more I found this was basically inevitable, whether it be Android or iPhones.

“Hopefully this little bit of fame I have can get me a scholarship or a job or something.”

Tyler’s mum Laura Blevins said: “It’s the most rewarding feeling in the world as a parent to see your child blossoming and seeing their talents recognised by the world.

“It’s great to get a major corporation like Apple to acknowledge that he was correct in his theory. I am just really proud of him.”

A new iPhone battery costs £79 but Apple says it is slashing the cost for replacements by £37 in the US.

However, it is yet to announce a similar move in Britain.

Apple could face billions in legal fees as customers launch lawsuits.

The company said in a statement: “We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We apologise. There’s been a lot of misunderstanding about this issue, so we like to clarify and let you know about some changes we are making.

“First and foremost, we would never do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades.

“Our goal has always been to create products our customers love and making iPhones last as long as possible is an important part of that.”

Earlier this month Apple admitted it had made software changes to manage ageing lithium-ion batteries, claiming performance decreases over time.

James Vlahakis of the Sulaiman Law Group, representing customers in Chicago, said: “Apple’s failure to inform customers that these updates would wreak havoc on the phone’s performance is being deemed purposeful and, if proven, constitutes the unlawful and decisive withholding of material information.”

Russian Central Bank slashes key rate as inflation slows & economy grows https://briefnews.eu/russian-central-bank-slashes-key-rate-as-inflation-slows-economy-grows/ https://briefnews.eu/russian-central-bank-slashes-key-rate-as-inflation-slows-economy-grows/#respond Fri, 15 Sep 2017 11:53:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russian-central-bank-slashes-key-rate-as-inflation-slows-economy-grows/

The Central Bank of Russia (CBR) cut on Friday the key annual lending rate from 9 to 8.5 percent. The regulator said inflation is below the target of four percent, and Russia’s economic output has been expanding.

“Amid favorable price dynamics of a number of goods and services, inflation expectations resumed their decline, though they have not yet anchored at a low level. Medium-term risks of inflation overshooting four percent dominate over the risk of its steady downward deviation from the target. In order to maintain inflation close to the four percent, the Bank of Russia will continue to conduct moderately tight monetary policy,” the regulator said in a statement.

Since early 2017, inflation has been falling faster than the CBR had predicted. It accelerated to 4.4 percent in June but has been slowing since then. Inflation plunged to a historic low of 3.3 percent in August and was 3.2 percent as of September 4.

The central bank reported that in second quarter GDP growth exceeded forecasts.

“Economic growth was spurred by investment and consumer demand along with the recovery of production inventories… Trade, mining, and transport made a major contribution to the accelerating economic growth,” the regulator said.

Given this data, the CBR has upgraded its forecast for GDP growth to 1.7-2.2 percent. However, the regulator warned “the economy is close to its potential” and structural reforms are needed for faster growth.

Chinese trade data misses and export and import growth slows https://briefnews.eu/chinese-trade-data-misses-and-export-and-import-growth-slows/ https://briefnews.eu/chinese-trade-data-misses-and-export-and-import-growth-slows/#respond Tue, 08 Aug 2017 06:49:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chinese-trade-data-misses-and-export-and-import-growth-slows/ Chinese trade data produced a rare miss in July with annual growth in exports and imports both undershooting expectations.

According to China’s General Administration of Customs, exports grew by 7.2% year-on-year in US dollar denominated terms, missing forecasts for an increase of 10.9%.

That was also below the 11.3% increase previously reported in June.

On the other side of the ledger, imports rose by 11% from a year earlier in USD-terms, again undershooting forecasts for growth of 16.6%.

They previously grew by 17.2% year-on-year in June.

In volume terms, imports of crude oil, iron ore and coal all fell from the levels reported in June.

Crude oil imports stood at 34.66 million tonnes, down from 36.11 million tonnes a month earlier, while imports of iron ore slipped to 85.74 million tonnes from 94.7 million tonnes in June.

Coal imports also dipped to 19.46 million tonnes, a four-month low.

In the first seven months of the year, imports of crude, iron ore and coal grew by 13.6%, 7.5% and 18.2% respectively from the same period a year earlier.

In the 12 months to July this year, the Chinese yuan weakened by 1.4% against the US dollar, suggesting that the growth in exports and imports was largely driven by strengthening demand both from within China and abroad, rather than movements in currency markets.

In yuan-denominated terms, Customs said exports grew by 11.2% year-on-year. Import growth was even stronger, lifting 14.7% over the same period.

The wash-up from the movements in exports and imports was that the national trade surplus swelled to $ 46.74 billion, above the $ 42.77 billion level of June and forecasts for a smaller increase to $ 46.08 billion.

China’s trade surplus with the United States stood at $ 25.2 billion, down marginally on the $ 25.4 billion level of June.

There has been no significant reaction in stocks, commodity futures, bonds or currencies in Asia to the release of the trade report.

Next Jump: Shmup Tactics Slows Down Bullet Hell For Better Tactical Decisions https://briefnews.eu/next-jump-shmup-tactics-slows-down-bullet-hell-for-better-tactical-decisions/ https://briefnews.eu/next-jump-shmup-tactics-slows-down-bullet-hell-for-better-tactical-decisions/#respond Wed, 03 May 2017 13:14:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/next-jump-shmup-tactics-slows-down-bullet-hell-for-better-tactical-decisions/ ss_31997fce0caffd6a62b778701f98a042cf3f8000.1920x1080.jpg

If twitchy, precise reflexes aren’t really your thing, the shmups typically won’t be a genre for you. Weaving through the scant few millimeters of space you have between bullets and enemies can be just a bit much for folks like us. This is where Next Jump: Shmup Tactics (Next Jump) comes in, giving players a turn-based, tactical experience of the genre, letting us carefully plan out our bullet dodging and enemy shooting in advance.

Dragons have stolen the chosen drink of the elves, dwarves, and orcs, and so the latter take to their starships to get it back! Which is as good of a motivation as any to play through the various boards of Next Jump. Each one is procedurally generated, and will offer you a group of enemies all blasting away. It’s up to you to anticipate where these ships will move, where they’ll shoot, and how to best avoid and intercept them on each turn.

Retrieving your people’s holy drink won’t take terribly long, or at least, the individual turns won’t. Next Jump was designed to be played on a coffee break, so you can easily hop on, take out your enemies, and then hop back off in time to get back to something else.

If you can’t handle the idea of a sad orc, and you also need your shmup action coming at you a little more slowly and methodically, it’s well worth looking into.

Next Jump: Shmup Tactics is available for $ 4.99 on Steam. For more information on the game and developer Post Mortem Pixels, you can head to the game’s site or follow them on YouTube and Twitter.

Jack wins it for the Tigers2:21

AFL: Richmond have come from behind to beat Melbourne in a thriller at the MCG. The Demons lead at every change, but thanks to six goals from Jack Riewoldt, the Tigers continued their best start to a season, since 1995.

RICHMOND does not want to engage top-of-the-ladder Adelaide in a shootout when the AFL’s No.1 attack meets the league’s stingiest defence on Sunday.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick has been thrilled with his backline’s ability to “stem the flow” at stages this season, including during Melbourne’s first-quarter dominance on Anzac Eve.

The Crows are averaging a staggering 133 points per game and while Richmond is one of five teams also averaging three figures, it wants a “dour” affair when the undefeated clubs face off.

Adelaide has slotted 47 goals in the past fortnight and also led the AFL for scoring in 2016.

“We wouldn’t be hoping for a shootout. We’ve got to stop them to win,” Hardwick said today.

The Crows are the AFL’s No.1 club for offensive ball movement and Hardwick said denying halfback dashers Rory Laird, Brodie Smith and midfield jets Rory Atkins and Rory Sloane space was crucial.

“If you allow them to play with speed they’ll hurt you. So we’ve got to slow them down,” Hardwick said.

The Tigers are 5-0 for the first time since 1995 while the Crows have been crunched into premiership favouritism, along with GWS.

Richmond poured over vision of Andy Otten this morning and believed Daniel Talia trained this week and could play.

The All-Australian defender hurt his hamstring last week and the Crows would probably turn to Kyle Hartigan to stop superstar Jack Riewoldt if Talia does not come up.

“Defensively we’ve got to be on our game, because that’s where it’ll be won or lost,” Hardwick said.

“It’s going to be a groundball battle. I think we’re AFL No.1 and they’re No.2.”

Hardwick said Brownlow Medal fancy Dustin Martin “warmed” into last week’s win after barely training due to groin soreness, but had recovered well.

But ruckman Shaun Hampson has suffered a setback with his back injury and has been sent offsite to add pilates to his rehabilitation program.

Hardwick praised Toby Nankervis’s impact around the ground as the physical ruckman firms as the best recruit of the season.

The Tigers wanted Nankervis, 22, in the 2013 draft and were armed with pick 50, but Sydney swooped at No.33.

But they traded pick 46 for him last year, beating premier Western Bulldogs to his signature.

“His ability to compete around the ground, it’s like having another midfielder in there,” Hardwick said.

“He’s just one of those players that competes really hard.”

Hardwick confirmed concussion victim Ben Griffiths’ season was in doubt after suffering a knock in the VFL on Saturday.

“He’ll have some testing done. We’re still very confident with Ben will be available to play at some stage this year,” Hardwick said.

“We’ll give him an extended break just to make sure that we tick all the boxes with that.

“When that is, that’s up to Ben and the doctor to decide. We’ve just got to support Ben and make sure his welfare is first and foremost.”

Hardwick liked Daniel Rioli’s ability to lift teammates after the emerging star helped trigger Richmond’s stirring comeback win against the Dees.

“He’s finding his way. His impact on the game like his cousin (Cyril) in a way, probably only needs 12 touches to have a significant impact.

“He’s got a propensity to make players around him better, just through his touch.”

Rioli, 20, is in coming months expected to re-sign until 2020.

Shares of Snap Inc rebounded on Wednesday following a steep selloff while an initial rush to short sell the stock appeared to be slowing.

The owner of the Snapchat messaging app had fallen sharply in the previous two sessions as investors focused on its lofty valuation following a $ 3.4 billion public listing last week that was the hottest technology offering in three years.

Shares of Snap, which has warned it may never be profitable, rose 3.6 percent to $ 22.21.

Traders betting against Snap on Wednesday added less than $ 50 million in new short sales of its stock, a slower pace than the day before, when initial short bets jumped to $ 300 million, according to S3 Partners, a financial analytics firm.

Short sellers borrow and then sell stocks they think will fall in value, hoping to profit by buying the stock back more cheaply later on and then returning it to its owner.

Reflecting a higher supply of Snap‘s shares and potentially less demand, the interest rates brokers charged to lend the shares declined to around 15 percent from as much as 40 percent on Tuesday, said S3 Partners Managing Director of Research Ihor Dusaniwsky.

Snap has been a roller-coaster ride for traders, surging 59 percent in its first two days of trading, and falling 18 percent since then.

Billionaire investor David Tepper, whose views on markets and stocks are closely watched by other money managers, told CNBC on Wednesday he bought shares of Snap in the IPO, sold some, and would buy again if the price dropped.Screen Shot 2017 03 08 at 1.05.24 PMMarkets Insider
