President Donald Trump’s poll numbers are sagging in three key Midwestern states, with only around one-third of voters surveyed saying he deserves to be reelected in 2020, according to new NBC News/Marist polls out Wednesday.
The poll indicated that 28% of registered voters in Michigan, a state Trump flipped in the 2016 presidential election, say he deserves a second term. Some 62% of voters polled believe it’s time to replace Trump, the poll found.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Russia dropped to 70th in the official FIFA rankings released on Thursday – their lowest position ever and three places below the Saudis in 67th.
The pair meet in the World Cup opening game at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on June 14.
Stanislav Cherchesov’s Russian team drew 1-1 with Turkey in their final World Cup warm-up game on Tuesday, and are without a win in their last seven matches.
The team have fallen steadily down the rankings in recent years, partly as a result of being deprived of competitive qualifying games as World Cup hosts, but also due to a run of poor run of form stretching back to the autumn.
Teams above Russia in the rankings include Burkina Faso in 52nd, Albania in 58th, Cape Verde Islands in 65th, and Guinea in 68th.
Russia will be hoping to make a mockery of the rankings when they face World Cup Group A opponents Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Uruguay – with the latter two countries ranked 45th and 14th respectively.
Most Russian fans would see getting out of the group as the main target, which would be a first for the country since it began competing independently following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Progressing any further than the last 16 would be seen as a major upset, given that Russia would most likely face either Spain or Portugal should they emerge from their group.
The World Cup hosts are 50-1 outsiders to win the tournament outright, but can perhaps take heart from previous underdogs who have defied the odds.
South Korea shocked the world when they went on a stunning run all the way to the World Cup semi-final as hosts in 2002, beating Spain and Italy along the way before losing 1-0 to Germany.
Denmark caused a seismic shock when they claimed the 1992 European title in Sweden – despite only entering the tournament after Yugoslavia were disqualified – while Greece won the same title in Portugal in 2004 after arriving as 150-1 outsiders.
The latest FIFA rankings saw reigning world champions Germany remain in top spot, ahead of Brazil in second and Belgium in third.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal are fourth, one place in front of Lionel Messi’s Argentina. Switzerland stay in a surprise sixth, ahead of much-fancied World Cup contenders France and Spain, who are in seventh and 10th places respectively.

Despite almost universal scientific consensus that climate change poses a growing threat, President Donald Trump’s recent infrastructure plan makes no mention of the need to build resilience to rising global temperatures. Instead, it actually seeks to weaken environmental reviews as a way of speeding up the infrastructure permitting process.
This proposal flies in the face of scientific evidence on climate change. It also contradicts the priorities of many local leaders who view climate change as a growing concern.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Ford reported its fourth-quarter earnings for 2017 on Wednesday, January 24 after the bell.
The automaker is down 0.58% to $ 11.98 after reporting fourth-quarter earnings of $ 0.39 per share vs. Wall Street estimates of $ 0.42 per share and revenue of $ 41.3 billion vs. estimates of $ 36.71 billion, according to the company.
Its earnings and revenue have come out higher than Wall Street’s expectations in three of the last four quarters.
At the Deutsche Bank Global Auto Industry Conference in Detroit last week, the company announced a plan to use its capital more efficiently and invest for future growth. Part of that plan has been a focus on electric vehicles. The company wants to invest $ 11 billion between 2015 and 2022 to convert its product lines to electric or hybrid vehicles.
“While [Ford] said that it is hoping that will position the company for future growth, analysts have cautioned that it will pressure profitability in 2018 and beyond,” JJ Kinahan, chief market strategist at TD Ameritrade, wrote in a note to investors prior to the report.
Ford said it plans to up its game through competitive partnerships. It announced a joint venture with Chinese firm Zotye to develop and manufacture electric vehicles in China. It has also made a push into self-driving vehicles through partnerships with Lyft and Domino’s Pizza.
Also at the Deutsche Bank conference, Ford announced its 2018 guidance, citing higher commodity costs and higher currency exchange rates as causes for its lukewarm outlook despite its cost-cutting efforts. The company expects an adjusted earnings per share in the range of $ 1.45 to $ 1.70 and modest revenue gains for 2018. Wall Street estimates Ford will earn adjusted earnings of $ 1.61 per share.

Tesla shares are down 2.01% to $ 346.34 on Wednesday after reports that a Model S crashed into the rear of a fire truck while being controlled with the car’s autopilot technology.
The US National Transportation Safety Board is currently gathering information about the accident, according to a Bloomberg report.
The accident occurred near Los Angeles, where the driver of the Model S said autopilot was engaged when the car struck a fire truck at around 65 miles per hour. There were no reported injuries in the crash.
The NTSB investigated a Florida crash last year, where a Model S ran under a semi-truck, which killed the driver. The safety board found that autopilot was partially to blame for the crash, but that crash rates for Tesla vehicles dropped 40% since autopilot was turned on.

Two Victoria’s Secret Angels did just that during a recent trip – but rather than soaking up the sun on an exotic beach, the duo were in freezing cold Antartica.
Jasmine Tookes, 26, and Josephine Skriver, 24, shared images of themselves enjoying everything the snowy location has to offer.
But as well as the usual boat trips among the icebergs and trips to see penguins, the duo did something more out of the ordinary.
The models are very used to posing in their swimsuits, and even the cold weather couldn’t put them off.
They took the opportunity to strip down to their swimming costumes and frolic in the snow.
Sharing a video to Insta stories, Jasmine wrote: “Call us crazy ;)”
Jasmine wore a crisp white plunge neck costume, while Josephine slipped into a baby pink costume with cutout sides.
A giant ship in the background perhaps gave a clue as to how they had got out to the remote location.
In another post, Jasmine said the trip was “the best way to start the new year.”
She continued: “This is going to be such an exciting and incredible experience.
“Anyone who knows me well knows this is a trip definitely out of my comfort zone. Proud of myself for taking the leap and trying something adventurous.”
The models were last seen walking in the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in Shanghai in November.
The catwalk was a riot of colour, with Candice Swanepoel in a bright red and orange outfit.
Victoria’s Secret also opted for a grecian theme, with Bella and Candice both seen in gold head pieces and flowing fabrics reminiscent of Ancient Greece.
A fun and flirty atmosphere was the order of the day for the show, with Bella Hadid dancing at the front of the catwalk as she laughed along to the music.
All of the models did a long walk at the end, clapping their hands and waving to the crowd.

There was good news in the Census Bureau’s poverty report for most age groups in America. The data revealed one concerning trend, however: rising poverty among older Americans.
“Individuals ages 65 and older had the unique distinction of being the only population segment to experience a significant increase in the number of individuals in poverty, with 367,000 more older Americans in poverty in 2016,” Ashley Edwards, Adam Bee, and Liana Fox of the Census’ Social, Economic and Housing Statistics Division wrote in an analysis of the latest Census report.
The national poverty rate declined by 0.8 percentage points to 12.7%, the broader survey showed. Poverty rates, while still the highest among wealthy nations, fell across the board for groups including whites, blacks, Hispanics, males, females, children, American citizens, and immigrants.
Why the reversal of fortunes for the elderly?
Part of the trend “could be explained by the aging of the baby boom generation, which contributed to faster population growth in the population ages 65 and over in 2016 compared with the overall population,” the experts suggest. “Population growth alone would lead to increases in the number of older Americans both in and out of poverty.”
But that doesn’t tell the whole story. Issues like inadequate safety nets, elevated healthcare costs, and longer lifespans are also playing a role.
“Among older Americans living alone (or with nonrelatives), increases in the number of individuals in poverty outpaced their population growth, leading to statistically significant increases in their poverty rate from 16.0% in 2015 to 18.1% in 2016,” the Census analysis found.
In addition, Americans 65 and older were the only demographic group in which the proportion of people with income below 50% of their poverty threshold — another key measure known as the supplemental poverty rate — increased, to 3.3% in 2016 from 2.8% the year prior.
“While the change in the official poverty rate among those ages 65 and older was not statistically significant, the supplemental poverty rate for older adults increased by 0.8 percentage points in 2016,” the report said. The share of people ages 65 and older with resources below half their supplemental poverty threshold also spiked, from 4.5% in 2015 to 5.2% in 2016.

Facebook isn’t shy about wanting to increase your involvement in politics, and that might soon include seeing posts from the politicians you don’t follow. A spokesperson has confirmed to Recode that the social network is testing a feature that slips the “top posts” from local politicians into your News Feed, even when you don’t follow them. You’ll only see it once a week at the most, and only if you already follow at least one of your area’s representatives (at any level), but it will lead to seeing political messages that you might have otherwise missed. And yes, that includes from other parties — you may see what’s popular on the other side of the fence.
There’s no certainty that this feature will become widely available, but it’s easy to see Facebook rolling this out quickly. The company is determined to not only boost involvement in politics, but to prevent a repeat of the 2016 US presidential election. Critics accused Facebook of skewing the election results by letting social media bubbles (and the fake news that circulates among them) persist. If it can regularly show what your local politicians are up to, it might pop those bubbles and encourage you to vote when issues you care about are at stake.

Amid the many controversies roiling Washington these days, there is a troubling trend that is greater than the sum of the parts: America’s singular leadership role, held with minimal challenge since the end of World War II, is rapidly fading. A man who campaigned on the promise of making America great again now risks doing just the opposite.
The United States’ geopolitical stature is based on much more than military power — although might is one of its foundational components. One by one, the administration is allowing the other elements of leadership, reputational and institutional alike, to slip away. The United States can regain them only if the administration develops a more disciplined communication and policy process — and only if the president comes to understand that giving in to impulsive and fact-challenged anger is the opposite of “presidential.”
The power to inspire was the greatest asset of the U.S., and we fear it’s gone.
On the reputation front, America has been admired for the strength, integrity and stability of its political system — and for the values it has always projected. Now we are seen with a mixture of disillusionment and sorrow. As a European ambassador said to me recently: “The power to inspire was the greatest asset of the U.S., and we fear it’s gone.”
Why is this? It’s pretty simple, really. The world has seen even weak American presidents as embodying the values people associated with America. But the long trail of sloppy, inaccurate or false statements that culminated in President Trump’s labeling of his predecessor as a felon on March 5 signal to the world that they cannot trust what the American president says.
The issue is not academic. I assure most foreigners that we’ll muddle through somehow with domestic issues such as health care and tax reform — despite all the partisan wrangling. But I cannot assure them that the Trump administration can manage an international crisis that requires steadiness, careful coordination, resistance to foolish impulse or anger and the confidence of allies. While the new national security adviser, H. R. McMaster, is well-qualified to inject some discipline into the process, he’s got a steeper hill to climb than any of his predecessors since Watergate in 1974.
The president’s actions are not merely sowing divisions within his Republican Party; they also put serious members in an ethical quandary. It mirrors the ethical danger experienced in authoritarian societies and described by Vaclav Havel, the anticommunist dissident who became free Czechoslovakia’s first president. He said citizens and politicians under authoritarian rule had become “morally ill” because they were forced “to say one thing while thinking another.”
This is surely the dilemma serious Republicans now face, knowing their leader has spoken falsely but searching for ways to not acknowledge that. You can sense their discomfort and hear their resort to political bafflegab. Though there are exceptions — Senator John McCain and a few other truth-tellers — their situation must be challenging.
The president’s actions are not merely sowing divisions within his Republican Party; they also put serious members in an ethical quandary.
Beyond these reputational issues, administration actions are weakening the domestic and international institutions on which American leadership has rested. Driven domestically by sophomoric ideas like “deconstruction” of the “deep state,” the administration has carelessly demeaned the judiciary, the intelligence community and a free media. This hits the rest of the world as worrisome nonsense, not leadership.
Meanwhile, international alliances and institutions that both reflect and sustain American leadership in the world are shaken. To their credit, American officials such as Defense Secretary Mattis, Vice President Pence and Homeland Security Secretary Kelly told world leaders at the Munich Security Conference last month that the U.S. solidly supports its commitments. But all the corridor talk was about whether the president would say the same thing — and mean it.
For decades, American leadership has been marked by the propagation of big ideas. Institutions such as NATO, the EU, the UN, the IMF and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe were all created, inspired or supported by the U.S. The ideas behind them were bold, outward-looking and transformational. Today, we are closing off to the world through talk of walls, travel bans, withdrawal from trade agreements and a massive spending cut (almost 30 percent) proposed for our State Department — the institution most directly responsible for engaging the rest of the world.
Meanwhile, we’re letting China corner the transformational idea market with its creation of the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (most of our closest allies have joined), its New Silk Road linking China to Europe and the Middle East and its Comprehensive Regional Economic Partnership. The latter will fill the vacuum the administration left when it hastened to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement.
Some will ask why American leadership matters anyway. Why should America be the standard-bearer for democracy, the rule of law, etc.? After all, we’ve made our mistakes and have often fallen short of our loftiest goals. Perhaps American exceptionalism was a mere fluke of history.
The points are worth raising — and rebutting. After the second World War, the U.S. dedicated itself to leading the world away from the most violent and destructive period in modern human history, and in this it succeeded. It would be hard to overstate the magnitude of its achievement. Two things were key to its success. First, policies that muted whatever part of human nature that permitted the global holocaust of the 20th century. Second, America’s unique blending of self-interest with the pursuit of universally appealing values.
If the administration undervalues the role of American leadership, there are others who will move into the vacuum regionally and globally. Russia, China and Iran come to mind. And the world they want will not be in any way compatible with the vision that has traditionally animated the United States.

The dollar is slightly weaker on Wednesday ahead of the Fed’s decision.
The US dollar index is down by 0.2% at 101.54 as of 8:39 a.m. ET.
The latest interest rate decision from the Federal Reserve will be out at 2 p.m. ET.
Virtually everyone expects that the Fed will hike rates by 25 basis points. In fact, the World Interest Rate probability data provided by Bloomberg has traders seeing a 100% chance of a hike.
“A hike today is as nearly a foregone conclusion as these things can get,” Marc Chandler, global head of currency strategy, wrote. “The idea of not wanting to surprise the market, which some Fed officials underscored, works both ways. It means the market expectations are primed. It also means that when there is a nearly 100% chance discounted, not to deliver would also be a destabilizing surprise.”
Folks will likely be paying close attention to the Fed’s dot plot for hints about future hikes.
As for the rest of the world, here’s the scoreboard as of 8:47 a.m. ET:
