First starter Rosina Kojonup is by Shamus Award out of Courgette making her the younger (half) sister of glamour filly She Will Reign, winner of the Golden Slipper last year.

She Will Reign cost only $ 20,000 as a yearling and has become racing’s ultimate “Cinderella story” winning the world’s richest juvenile race, already earning nearly $ 3.2 million prizemoney.

Rosina Kojonup went through the sale ring at the Inglis Easter Sales only a couple of weeks after She Will Reign’s Golden Slipper triumph and not surprisingly fetched $ 425,000.

Baker has only given Rosina Kojonup one barrier trial hitout ahead of her race debut tomorrow, with the filly scoring comfortably over 800m at Randwick on February 12.

“It is a bit of an ask going straight to 1100m off one trial, I’m not discounting that, but she is a nice, filly, a natural athlete and we have to run,’’ Baker said.

“She is bred to handle a rain-affected track and the barrier (seven) is pretty good so I’m happy to start her (tomorrow).

“We are behind the Eight ball for the Golden Slipper and it does look a strong year but she is a promising filly so we will give her a chance to get there. If she doesn’t there are lots of other options for her during the autumn carnival.’’

If Rosina Kojonup can emulate her older half-sister, She Will Reign and win the Golden Slipper, the fillies will become only the second set of siblings to win the big race after full-brothers Skyline (1958) and Sky High (1960).

Rosina Kojonup is one of 17 juveniles making their debuts across two races at Rosehill Gardens tomorrow — just 24 days before the Golden Slipper.

In the 60 years since the Golden Slipper, no horse has won the big race so soon after making its race debut. Toy Show holds the record with just 31 days between her first start and her 1975 Golden Slipper triumph.

Another two-year-old making her debut tomorrow is the Kris Lees-trained Miss Fabulass, a superbly bred filly by unbeaten English superhorse Frankel out of former champion filly Samantha Miss.

Miss Fabulass, owned and bred by John Singleton, has looked impressive winning barrier trials at Gosford and Newcastle’s Beaumont track in recent weeks.

“She is a lovely filly with ability but she will get getter with time, as her pedigree suggests,’’ Lees said.

“We would like to give her a run (tomorrow) to see where she is at. If anything, she might be more a Sires filly than a Slipper hope.

“She is bred to handle the wet track and her barrier (16) might be all right on race day.’’

TOBY Edmonds’ decision to use Brisbane as the key lead-up for Houtzen’s Golden Slipper campaign may look like a masterstroke after the weekend, with wild weather threatening to play havoc with her Sydney rivals.

Houtzen has also accepted for the Reisling Stakes in Sydney on Saturday and will be paid up for Sunday’s Black Opal Stakes in Canberra, but Eagle Farm is the most probable location for her appearance this weekend.

Houtzen has to carry a modern record of 63kg to win at Eagle Farm but it is shaping as a more desirable option than Sydney, where the track seems certain to be heavy, if the races go ahead. The forecast for Sydney is 20mm of rain each day until Sunday.

If Sydney is washed out, the Black Opal will be one of the hottest ever and a far tougher test for Houtzen first-up over 1200m than the 1000m scamper at Eagle Farm.

Jeff Lloyd said on Wednesday he could not recall riding a horse with 63kg, but he has the heavy lead bags at the ready.

“It’s a lot of weight for any horse to carry, let alone a two-year-old,” Lloyd said. “You just don’t know how much it might take out of her. I just hope she gets out of it in good shape.

“It’s not ideal, but I do think the best option is to stay in Brisbane. You wouldn’t want her going down there and running first-up over 1200m on a bog track, which is not what you want for any horse going into a big race.”

If Randwick is washed out, horses like Menari, Chauffeur, From Within and Jukebox could go to Canberra, as they are all among the Opal nominations.

Randwick also hosts the Group 1 Guineas and Canterbury Stakes this weekend and contingency options include transferring the meeting to next Monday or Wednesday.

Gary Portelli, trainer of Slipper favourite She Will Reign (who is not nominated for Canberra) is not concerned by the prospect of a wet track, but is desperate to have a final lead-up.

“As long as they run the race at some stage, I’m not worried,” Portelli said. “If they were washed out altogether that would present a problem and I would probably have to trial her, because I’m not keen to race her a week out from the Slipper.

“Hopefully they will get the race run, be it Saturday or a couple of days later. It looks like it might be a Slipper run on a soft track, so it’s nice to know my filly has no problems in it.’’
